Rangers submit offer to welcome first Rohl signing who’s dropped key hint about future

Rangers have now submitted an opening offer in an attempt to welcome Danny Rohl’s first Ibrox signing in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Rohl waiting for "right timing" in January window

Rohl has steadied the ship at Ibrox following Russell Martin’s disastrous tenure. The Gers’ victory over St. Mirren was as resolute as it was solid, as they ensured that the visitors’ late strike was nothing more than a consolation goal. Now third in the Scottish Premiership and six points behind leaders Hearts, the title race is far from over as far as Rangers are concerned.

Up next, Rangers travel to face Celtic in the Old Firm derby in what is always a crucial game. Given the Hoops’ recent struggles, Rohl’s side should see their trip to Celtic Park as the perfect opportunity to get one over on their rivals.

Looking ahead to the game, Rohl told reporters: “Our belief is there. When we look at the moment, except from the 2-1 defeat (at Hearts), we took a lot of points.

“We had some great performances, we had also some performances where not everything was good. Now we go with confidence. It’s a huge game, but we are prepared for this. I think this is what we want to see.

“In this game it’s important that we are strong. I think it’s important that the ref is strong in this game as well. If we do this, we will have a fantastic game.”

The German also looked ahead to the January transfer window, admitting that Rangers will be waiting for the “right timing”, saying: “I think we know the window is not easy, but we are on front foot.

“What it means at the end, let’s see. We cannot influence everything, but we are at the moment clear. We know that in some positions, we have to wait for the right timing.”

Rangers submit offer to sign Emil Bohinen

On the transfer front, Rohl will be looking for his first signing and whilst names such as Jens Hjerto-Dahl have been mentioned as of late, it may well be another player who arrives before any others.

According to Calcio Spezia, as relayed by Sport Witness, Rangers have now submitted an offer to sign Emil Bohinen from Genoa in a move that would see the defensive midfielder cut his loan spell at Venezia short in Serie B. The Norwegian has also reportedly changed agents recently in what could be quite the hint about his plans for the future.

Better than Aasgaard: Rangers star is becoming Rohl's most important player

This Glasgow Rangers star is even more important to the team than Thelo Aasgaard for Danny Rohl.

ByDan Emery

It’s not a great surprise that the Gers are chasing a midfield reinforcement, given just how often Nicolas Raskin finds his name in the transfer headlines.

If Rangers lose the Belgian in January, then they will need to find the right replacement. Whether that comes in the form of Bohinen, who has played in Serie B this season, remains to be seen though.

Odegaard steals show in Arsenal’s win

Arsenal moved to within one point of the Premier League’s top four with a last-gasp come-from-behind victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

An early mistake from centre-back Gabriel saw Hwang Hee-chan open the scoring after just ten minutes and it looked to have been enough for the visitors.

That was until the inclusion of Nicolas Pepe in the second half.

He equalised from fellow substitute Eddie Nketiah’s pass just eight minutes before time and then the unthinkable happened as a last-minute striker from Alexandre Lacazette was turned into his own net by Jose Sa.

It was the Gunners’ latest goal since January 2017 when Alexis Sanchez scored past Burnley in the 97th minute.

The Ivory Coast international “changed the game off the bench” and nearly earned journalist Simon Collings’ Man of the Match award, that’s how much of an impact he made in just 19 minutes.

But instead, it was Martin Odegaard, who arguably stole the show, just as the Evening Standard reporter also claimed, the Norwegian playmaker is “getting better every week” and was “running the game near the end.”

The 23-year-old dynamo was unlucky to not get on the scoresheet himself as he hit the woodwork, whilst as per SofaScore, he registered three successful dribbles, two key passes and created one big chance.

Whilst he didn’t get an assist to his name, it was his involvement just before both of Arsenal’s late goals that was particularly impressive. “His ability on the half-turn & his weight of pass is vital to unlocking organised defensive blocks like Wolves’,” claimed BBC contributor Premier League Panel.

The rave reviews didn’t stop there for the £58m-rated playmaker.

Gunners blogger Next Generation Arsenal dubbed him “incredible” and a “real leader on the pitch” and former Everton and Crystal Palace star Yannick Bolasie, a well-known Arsenal supporter, even waxed lyrical about Odegaard.

“Odegaard is such a baller…what a player, quality to watch,” he tweeted.

In what was his 45th appearance for the north London giants, it’s clear that it was another impressive outing for the former Real Madrid star. That £30m is now looking more and more like a bargain.

Rangers: Chris Jack makes transfer claim

A concerning Rangers transfer claim has been made over Ibrox centre-back Connor Goldson’s future in Glasgow…

What’s the talk?

Gers journalist Chris Jack has claimed that the central defender will be on his way out of the club at the end of the season if he wants to go back down south of the border to his home country.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think the timing is probably right. If Connor fancies another crack at England, it’s going to be this summer.”

Devastation

Gio van Bronckhorst will surely be devastated by this news as Jack is suggesting that Goldson is likely to be on his way out at the end of his current deal in June.

He has featured in every single match for the Dutch head coach in the Premiership and Europa League since the ex-Feyenoord man came in to replace Steven Gerrard so his loss will be seismic.

In fact, he has only missed one game in the league all season and that came against St. Johnstone back in September.

This highlights his importance to the team in terms of his availability. He has consistently been fit and ready to play since van Bronckhorst arrived at Ibrox and that has made him a reliable, steady, figure to build around at the heart of the defence.

His performances have also been excellent. Goldson has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.12 in the Premiership, with Rangers keeping 14 clean sheets in his 29 appearances. He has won a whopping 68% of his individual duels in the competition, showing that he has been a dominant force at the back for the Gers throughout the campaign as he has got the better of opposition forwards more often than not.

The English defender has also built up strong relationships on the pitch. He has played alongside ten current Rangers players in 116 or more matches, including four of them 170 or more times. This shows how integral he is to the team as he has been playing alongside the bulk of the current starting XI for a number of years, which is why losing him in the summer would be a huge blow.

Therefore, van Bronckhorst will be devastated by the prospect of the towering machine heading out of the door later this year. He would leave a gigantic hole to fill at centre-back and the Dutch head coach would then be left worrying about how he will replace him.

Brighton without Webster vs Newcastle

Newcastle United journalist Charlie Bennett has given his reaction to the news that Adam Webster has now been ruled out for Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Lowdown: Good chance

Given the recent form of the two teams, and the fact that they are playing at home, the St. James’ Park faithful should feel as if they have a good chance of picking up all three points this afternoon.

Of course, it may come down to who is available for both sides, with Allan Saint-Maximin still a doubt for the hosts.

The Latest: Webster out

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Graham Potter has revealed that Webster will definitely miss out.

Taking to Twitter, The Chronicle reporter Bennett has claimed that losing him is a ‘huge blow’ for the Seagulls.

The Verdict: Boost

The loss of Webster will no doubt have the opposite effect for the North East club and should give them a boost going into the clash.

The central defender has missed their last two fixtures in the Premier League, in which Potter’s men have lost both and conceded five in the process.

He can be a real threat in both boxes, already notching up two goals this season, while he ranks highly among his teammates in terms of aerial duels won, interceptions, clearances, blocks, passes and long balls per game (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, the Tyneside outfit know how good he is and thus much of a loss he will be, having reportedly enquired over his potential signing in the January transfer window, so Chris Wood could be licking his lips looking at the Seagulls’ makeshift defence.

Liverpool make contact to sign Pino

According to El Desmarque, there has been a transfer update out of Liverpool involving Villarreal sensation Yeremy Pino.

The Lowdown: Record-breaking starlet…

The Reds have been linked with a move for La Liga’s latest in-demand starlet recently with other reports out of Spain claiming Fenway Sports Group are preparing an offer alongside Premier League title rivals Man City.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-latest-developments/” title=”Liverpool latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Pino has been in impressive form over 2021/2022, managing the joint-second most goals and assists combined (6G, 4A) for Villarreal this season at just 19-years-old.

He’s already breaking records, becoming the youngest ever La Liga player to score a first half hat-trick recently when he bagged a brilliant four goals against Espanyol at the end of February.

Taking this into account, it’s little wonder Liverpool are interested, with El Desmarque now sharing a development.

The Latest: Liverpool make pre-summer move…

As per their information, Liverpool have made a pre-summer move for Pino – establishing ‘contacts’ as Fenway Sports Group have already ‘knocked on the player’s door’.

However, if the Reds wish to sign him, they may have to pay his marquee €80 million (£67m) release clause.

The Verdict: Exciting player…

Already described as a ‘special’ player performing at the ‘top level’ by Fabrizio Romano, it is little wonder Liverpool have knocked on his door.

El Desmarque, though, report FSG and Jurgen Klopp will face real competition as Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester City also make an approach.

If the Anfield side do win the race, going by his sensational campaign to date, they may well have a real prospect on their hands.

Newcastle learn Darwin Nunez price

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United transfer target Darwin Nunez…

What’s the talk?

According to Portuguese outlet Record, via The Mirror, the Magpies will need to splash out €80m (£67m) in order to strike a deal with Benfica this summer.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be keen on the attacker, who has previously attracted the interest of European giants Barcelona and AC Milan.

Shearer 2.0

PIF could land Newcastle their next Alan Shearer in a deal for Nunez, as his phenomenal goalscoring record suggests that he would be a prolific scorer for the Magpies, whilst he also has room to improve even further at the age of just 22.

The young attacker has the potential to develop over the years, with his former manager Jorge Jesus previously tipping him to reach the top of the game, stating: “All this decision-making ability, finishing and speed… He was Benfica’s most expensive purchase, and when there is no pandemic, he will be the most expensive sale. He will be a world-class player. Unfortunately for me, maybe I will lose him in a short time.”

This means that the Magpies would be signing a striker who has the scope to play for the club for many years, much like Shearer did. They could find their long-term number nine to consistently find the net at St James’ Park and become a fan favourite.

Shearer ended his career with 206 goals in 405 appearances for the Toon Army, which means that he scored a goal every 1.96 matches for the club. He was a sensational goalscorer throughout his career on Tyneside, and Nunez’s statistics offer a glimpse into how close he could get to the Geordie legend.

The Uruguayan has scored 26 goals in 33 games for Benfica in all competitions this season – a goal every 1.26 outings. He has found the back of the net 40 times in 77 matches for the Portuguese club in total in his career, which works out at one every 1.92 games.

This shows that he has been scoring at a stunning rate for his current club, netting more frequently for the Eagles than Shearer did for Newcastle – albeit with a significantly smaller sample size.

If Nunez can replicate anywhere near those numbers in the Premier League, he would be an incredible signing for the Magpies and become the club’s new talisman at the top end of the pitch. This is why PIF must swoop to secure a deal for the attacker…

Wolves injury news on Neves

Tim Spiers has given his reaction to some Wolves injury news that has now emerged involving Ruben Neves.

The Lowdown: Out until May

With Wolves’ full-back ranks looking perilously thin after the injuries to both Nelson Semedo and Ki-Jana Hoever, more troubling news has come out of Molineux during the international break.

Indeed, the club have revealed that Neves has now also been ruled out until May, after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury in his knee in the 3-2 defeat at home to Leeds United in the Premier League on Friday evening.

It means that he will now miss games against Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion in the top flight.

The Latest: Spiers reacts

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Spiers has now given his reaction to the news, claiming that it is a ‘serious blow’ for the Midlands club and confirming there is ‘no’ chance of recalling a loan player:

“Serious blow for Wolves, been one of their standout players this season.

“Dilemma now for Lage who has played a fair bit of 352 lately.

“Back-ups include Cundle (promising but inexperienced) and Trincao (technically gifted but inconsistent).

“No loan recalls outside the window.”

The Verdict: Big blow

Losing Neves for the next four matches at least is certainly a big blow for Bruno Lage and his team.

The Portugal international currently ranks as their third-best player in the Premier League, and ranks highly among his teammates in terms of average tackles, interceptions, shots, passes, long balls and through balls per game, not to mention his four goals and two assists (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, if the Wanderers have any aspirations left of playing European football next term, he will need to be in the side come the end of this campaign, but for now they will have to find a way to win without him.

Celtic: Stephen Welsh suffers injury for Scotland U21s

Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh was forced off for Scotland’s U21 side with what appeared to be a groin problem, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Welsh under Postecoglou

Welsh began the campaign as a regular under Ange Postecoglou and has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 21-year-old, who Celtic youth coach Martin Miller hailed as a ‘fan favourite’ and ‘phenomenal’, made his last start in green and white back in February against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt have established themselves as Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing, with Welsh and Christopher Jullien on standby.

The Latest: Welsh’s injury

Welsh was one of a number of Celtic players who have been away on international duty and captained Scotland’s U21 side against Kazakhstan on Monday.

The Daily Record revealed that the centre-back had to be taken off shortly after half-time with what appeared to be a groin injury days before a crucial Glasgow Derby with Rangers.

The Verdict: Never ending

You’d expect that Welsh wouldn’t have started at Ibrox on Sunday, however, it would have been handy for Postecoglou to be able to call upon the defender from the bench if needed.

He may not get that luxury following this injury update, with Postecoglou already having concerns over Daizen Maeda and Tom Rogic during the current break.

Tottenham: Daily Mail make Schick claim

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, but face competition from Arsenal.

The lowdown: Rise to prominence

Having made the grade at senior level at Sparta Prague, Schick moved to Italy and enjoyed successful spells at Sampdoria and AS Roma before arriving in Germany.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now a regular feature for both club and country as a fully-fledged Czech Republic international, the 26-year-old looks to be ready for the next step in a promising career, having bagged 20 Bundesliga goals in as many appearances this season – even more than Harry Kane has managed in the Premier League.

As Spurs continue to be linked with attacking players, from Paulo Dybala to Lautaro Martinez, Schick is the latest named indexed with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The latest: No deal

As per the report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are one of ‘several’ clubs to be interested in the 6 foot 2 frontman.

It’s claimed that Schick is on the ‘radar’ of both sides in north London as well as at Manchester City, Everton and West Ham.

However, there could be an immediate stumbling block as the report also states that the CEO at the Bundesliga club, Fernando Carro, has ‘insisted’ the towering forward is not for sale.

The verdict: Reinforcements needed

Having recently been touted with a move for Darwin Nunez before the latest links to the 33-cap Czech ace, it’s evident that Spurs’ boss, Antonio Conte, is desperate to add a striker to his ranks.

And , albeit seemingly an unlikely move at this juncture, adding a player of the £36million valued star’s calibre to the squad would be a bonafide option to strengthen the striker department.

Hailed as a ‘very special’ player by Czech Republic Under 19 manager David Holoubek and having netted 90 career goals for club and country, Schick would undoubtedly be a target for top clubs and a worthy option to support and perhaps eventually succeed Kane.

West Ham make contact to sign £95k-a-week striker amid Fullkrug future update

West Ham United have now expressed interest in signing a “phenomenal” striker in January, amid a major update on Niclas Fullkrug’s future.

Fullkrug heading for the exit door in January

Speculation about Fullkrug’s future at West Ham has been building for quite some time, and Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg dropped a major new update this morning, which indicates the striker’s time at the London Stadium is coming to an end.

In truth, losing Fullkrug is unlikely to be much of a blow for Nuno, given that the centre-forward hasn’t contributed with any goals in all competitions this season, with Jarrod Bowen, Callum Wilson and Crysencio Summerville emerging as the preferred options at striker.

However, considering Summerville isn’t a natural striker, it may be a savvy move to bring in another centre-forward in the upcoming transfer window, and West Ham have now made contact over a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

That is according to reliable reporter David Ornstein, in a report for the Athletic, which states the Hammers have lodged enquiries about a deal for the £95k-a-week striker, who they are hoping to sign on a permanent basis.

There could be competition for the Norwegian’s signature, with other, unnamed clubs said to be keen, and talks aren’t advanced at this stage, so it remains to be seen whether a deal will be possible.

West Ham may need more firepower to avoid the drop

Only Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Everton have scored fewer goals than the Irons in the Premier League this season, with Nuno’s side most recently struggling from an attacking point of view in the 3-0 loss against Manchester City on Saturday.

West Ham managed to create two big chances in the heavy defeat, but they were squandered by Bowen and Summerville, which suggests it may be worth bringing in a more clinical centre-forward next month.

West Ham make first move to sign La Liga's 2024 top goalscorer to replace Fullkrug

He’s got a proven record.

ByEmilio Galantini

The Wolves star could be up to the task, given his previous exploits, chipping in with an impressive 14 goals and four assists in 35 Premier League appearances for the Old Gold last season.

This season, the 25-year-old hasn’t been quite as clinical, scoring just once in the league, but he did manage to bag a brace in Wolves’ 3-2 EFL Cup triumph against the Hammers back in August.

Lauded as “phenomenal” by former manager Vitor Pereira, Strand Larsen could be a top signing if he is able to rediscover his previous form, but it would certainly be a gamble for West Ham to bring the Norway international in next month, given his current form.
