Newcastle could be terrorised by Ronaldo

Newcastle United return to action away at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with the Magpies looking to secure a third successive Premier League win, having most recently powered past Brentford with an emphatic 5-1 victory at St James’ Park.

That convincing triumph had come just a week on from another clinical display on the road against newly-promoted Fulham, with Miguel Almiron netting twice as Eddie Howe’s side claimed a 4-1 win against their ten-man opponents.

With nine goals scored across their last two top-flight games, the Tynesiders will likely head into this weekend’s meeting with Manchester United full of confidence, particularly with Erik ten Hag’s side having only recently shipped six away at champions, Manchester City.

Any optimism among the visitors’ ranks may well be tempered somewhat, however, as a result of the presence of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portugal international having become something of a nightmare figure for the northeast side over the years.

The veteran marksman currently boasts a stunning record of eight goals and four assists in just 13 meetings with the club across his two spells with the Red Devils, having memorably scored his first Premier League hat-trick against the Magpies in a 6-0 thrashing at the Theatre of Dreams back in 2008.

Newcastle were also the unfortunate opponents for the former Real Madrid man’s United homecoming last season, as the 191-cap superstar almost inevitably stole the headlines to help secure a 4-1 win over Steve Bruce’s side, bagging a brace in front of a raucous home crowd.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had showcased his poacher’s instinct to tap home just before the break in that encounter, before showing an impressive turn of speed in the second half to lash his effort through the legs of ‘keeper, Freddie Woodman.

While the 37-year-old has suffered something of a drop off in form since then with just two goals in all competitions so far this term – after netting 24 times across all fronts last season – Howe and co may well be concerned that the 6 foot 2 icon is beginning to find his rhythm again, particularly after his recent outing against Everton.

The £515k-per-week menace came off the bench in place of the stricken Anthony Martial to eventually prove the match-winner at Goodison Park, firing home superbly from the angle on his so-called weaker foot for what was his 700th club career goal.

That ridiculous tally showcases just why Ronaldo is something of a “freak of nature” – as per Darren Huckerby – with it set to be no real surprise if he is to add to that haul on Sunday, particularly against an opponent whom he appears to relish coming up against.

Spurs: Could’ve been sold for £50m, Poch’s "abysmal" dud left for £0

Tottenham Hotspur have been in fine fettle since the summer break and look to have drawn the curtain on an interminable period of instability preceding Ange Postecoglou's summer appointment.

The Australian gaffer was plucked from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic and has swiftly built the framework for lasting success in north London.

Last season, Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League in what was the club's lowest final standing since 2009, having dismissed esteemed manager Antonio Conte in March and sold world-class talisman and club record scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in August.

The sale of Kane was more than just a bitter pill to swallow, but if Postecoglou's preparations were dented by the situation then such has not been seen on the exterior, with Spurs barrelling into title contention and currently topping the league table after eight matches.

Several formerly struggling stars such as Heung-min Son (now club captain), Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma have been transformed and very much look fit for purpose at the heart of a burgeoning squad, the latter man, in particular, having been the club's "best, most consistent player" this time around, according to pundit Micah Richards.

Equally, acquisitions of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Gugliemo Vicario – a list which is not exhaustive – are proving to be revelations, adding dimensions to create a new, exciting culture.

Another fresh face, Destiny Udogie, was actually signed from Italian side Udinese in 2022 for an initial £15m but spent the 2022/23 campaign back on loan in the Serie A.

However, having been described as a "beast" by Maddison for his stunning start to the present season, the 20-year-old looks to be the left-back addition that the club has been searching for since Danny Rose plied his trade several years ago, while he was at his best.

When did Tottenham sign Danny Rose?

In 2007, Tottenham signed 17-year-old prospect Rose from Leeds United, with the youngster having never featured for the Elland Road side's first-team but held in high regard as one of English football's most talented of his age group.

He made a truly emphatic entrance, rifling the most delightful and satisfying of debut goals against Arsenal on his Premier League debut in 2010.

It's all the more commendable considering the fact that the 5 foot 8 whiz has only scored ten times across the entirety of his professional club career, with that sole league appearance of the campaign resulting in a goal of the highest distinction.

How good was Danny Rose?

Immensely talented, Rose has suffered from incessant injury problems across the majority of his professional career, having never once played more than 30 Premier League matches in one term.

In total, he completed 213 appearances for Tottenham, scoring nine goals and supplying 29 assists, very much a stalwart having spent more than a decade within the first-team squad, particularly important during the golden days of Mauricio Pochettino's reign.

At his best, Rose was combative, enterprising and tenacious, a veritable hive of energy and integral to the fluidity of his squad, with journalist Ryan Rosenblatt once saying: "Whether he's at left back or midfield, or Spurs are comfortable or getting worked, Rose has thrown everything he has at every run, header, tackle and pass. He's a damn hero."

But, as stated, he never quite managed to unearth the formula to regularity on the pitch, instead hindered by his injuries, and with this in mind, it is poignant that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy failed to convince Manchester United to secure his services in 2018.

Should Tottenham have sold Danny Rose to Manchester United?

Rose had just enjoyed significant success across the 2016/17 Premier League season, recording an average of 1.4 key passes, 2.8 tackles and 2.9 clearances per game, succeeding with 58% of his frequent dribbles and 60% of his contested duels, as per Sofascore.

However, the late phase of the campaign saw the 29-cap England international confined to the sidelines, with a knee injury playing detriment to his progress on the pitch for much of 2017.

This did not stop Manchester United from registering a concrete interest, with manager Jose Mourinho unimpressed by Luke Shaw's injury issues and earmarking the Spurs full-back to cement his place as the starring left-back at Old Trafford.

According to the Sun, Manchester United were ready to pay £50m for the dynamo in 2017, and were considering advancing their intrigue in January 2018.

However, in June 2018, after another season of inconsistency on the fitness front, it was revealed that Mourinho was no longer enamoured with the prospect of securing Rose's signature, having instead signed dynamic defender Diogo Dalot from Porto for around £19m, with the 19-year-old Portuguese player deemed a more prudent long-term investment.

Well, it has to be said that this was probably the right move to have made, with the Red Devil transfer interest seemingly signalling the end to the former Spurs star's impressive feats on the pitch.

Injuries and a loss of form have been detrimental over the past few years, and, now aged 33, Rose is unemployed and last played professional football with Watford in the late days of 2021.

He only managed eight Premier League appearances during the 2020/21 season with the Hornets, having signed after the conclusion of his Tottenham contract, with December proving to be the final time he would grace the grass.

Previously branded "abysmal” by pundit Roy Keane, Rose's decline was a sad thing to see and, now unemployed having rejected interest from Greek side AEK Athens in 2022, now looks to have ended his career at the very highest level.

To think that Tottenham could have rinsed Man United for a staggering sum but ultimately lost Rose for absolutely nothing is indeed something that will rankle Levy.

And while Tottenham are flourishing at present, had this situation been conducted in a more diligent manner, the issues surrounding the left-back position could have been solved by the reinvestment from a £50m sale.

Leeds: Finance expert reacts to Jean-Kevin Augustin news

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has been reacting to a Leeds United update involving the club’s former striker Jean-Kevin Augustin, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Leeds set to lose Augustin appeal

Sources told Football Insider on Thursday that the Whites are set to lose their appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the transfer of the 25-year-old.

Leeds will therefore be required to pay RB Leipzig a £17.7m obligation-to-buy fee which was inserted into the initial loan deal back in 2020. Interest of around £300,000 will also be added to the payment, taking it to a total of £18m.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding the news on Leeds and Augustin. He said that it is ‘far from ideal’ for the Yorkshire club to be landed with the £18m payment, citing interest on top of an obligation to buy fee.

Maguire stated: “There is an element of precedent when it comes to disputes between football clubs over transfers.

“If we look at the CAS verdict in the case of the tragic death of Emiliano Sala following his moves from Nantes to Cardiff City, Cardiff had to pay interest of five per cent in respect of the monies outstanding on the first instalment of the transfer.

“Therefore, if that precedent is upheld, Leeds will have to pay interest on top of the cash flows that have been agreed for the transfer itself.

“That is not an insignificant sum of money and this is far from an ideal situation for Leeds to find themselves in.”

The Verdict: Terrible news for Leeds

Augustin played just 48 minutes of action for Leeds, so he could go down as the club’s worst-ever signing when you take into consideration the fee that the Whites look set to fork out for him.

Leeds were obviously hoping that the disruption caused by the pandemic in 2020 would have nullified the financial commitment on the 25-year-old, but it always felt like the club were fighting a losing battle.

The saga has dragged on for more than two years now, and during that time, Augustin has played for Nantes and FC Basel, scoring three times this season for his current employers in Switzerland.

Phil Hay ‘baffled’ by one Leeds player

Journalist Phil Hay admits he is ‘baffled’ by Leeds United defender Junior Firpo’s shortcomings as a footballer during what has been a forgettable spell at Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Firpo struggling at Leeds

The Whites signed the Spaniard from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, which at the time felt like an exciting piece of business, considering the La Liga giants’ stature.

The left-back has failed to impress in his time at Leeds so far, though, making just 29 appearances, failing to score and only registering two assists.

For a defender who had been renowned for his attacking qualities during his time with Real Betis in the past, that is a hugely disappointing return.

The Latest: Hay left ‘baffled’

Writing in a matchday Q&A for The Athletic prior to Sunday’s Leeds’ 3-2 defeat at home to Fulham in the Premier League, Hay didn’t hold back when discussing Firpo.

Replying to a supporter who was strongly critical of the 26-year-old, the journalist said:

“We spoke about it at length on the podcast. I’m kind of baffled by him. Technically and tactically he consistently looks a long way short.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-53/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Not good enough

Sadly, this just feels like a signing that Leeds got badly wrong, with Firpo managing very few strong performances since making the move from Barca. Indeed, he ranks a lowly 16th among the squad according to WhoScored performance metrics.

He looks susceptible defensively and doesn’t do nearly enough going forward, as his aforementioned statistics highlight, and he also hasn’t been without injury problems.

The fact that Jesse Marsch seems more willing to play Pascal Struijk in an auxiliary left-back role when both are fit – something with which Hay agrees – is damning on Firpo’s part, and it could be that a summer exit next year makes sense for all parties.

Leeds: Orta interested in Dia

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Boulaye Dia to Elland Road next summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that all three of Leeds, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the US Salernitana 1919 centre-forward ahead of launching a potential move for the 25-year-old at the end of the season.

The report goes on to state that the Senegal international – who is currently on loan from Villarreal CF – is expected to make a €12m (£10.5m) permanent move to the Italian side next summer, with Salernitana president Danilo Iervolino then expected to put the striker immediately up for sale for a figure in the region of €17m (£14.5m).

Bamford heir

Considering just how impressive Dia has been in Italy so far this season, coupled with Patrick Bamford struggling in the Premier League this term, it is easy to see why Victor Orta would be interested in a deal to bring the Senegalese sensation to LS11 at the end of the current campaign.

Indeed, over his 11 Serie A appearances in 2022/23, the £17m-rated talent has been in red-hot form, scoring five goals, registering two assists and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.3 shots, making 1.1 key passes and completing 0.7 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the £30k-per-week striker average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.93, ranking him as Davide Nicola’s joint fourth-best performer in the top flight of Italian football.

In comparison, over Bamford’s ten Premier League appearances this season, the £12.6m-rated forward has scored no goals, provided one assist and created one big chance, as well as taking an average of 1.7 shots, making 0.4 key passes and completing 0.2 dribbles per match.

These metrics have seen the 29-year-old average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.40, currently ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s joint second-worst player in the English top flight.

As such, when comparing the returns of Dia – who Marlon Harwood dubbed “absolutely fantastic” – to those of Bamford this term, in addition to the fact the 25-year-old is four years the England international’s junior, it is evident that the 17-cap international could well be the dream long-term heir to the 29-year-old in the Leeds attack.

Rangers eye swoop for Ben Jackson

Glasgow Rangers are keeping an eye on a 21-year-old Championship defender ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the news?

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that Rangers are keeping tabs on Huddersfield Town left-back Ben Jackson following his emergence into the first-team picture under Mark Fotheringham.

His contract runs until 2024 therefore a transfer fee would be required if Giovanni van Bronckhorst wishes to sign him in January, although there are a number of other clubs also making regular checks on his progress.

Borna Barisic heir?

Rangers already have the left back area well covered, with Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz the two senior players for the position, while the likes of Johnly Yfeko and Kevin Ciubotaru are thriving in the academy.

However, Yilmaz has yet to settle at the club, making just seven appearances all season and Barisic is very much Jekyll and Hyde, a world-beater at his best, yet this seems to be few and far between, especially this season.

Jackson has impressed during his nine Championship outings this season, averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.81.

The 21-year-old poses a solid attacking threat, either from left-back or if played slightly further forward, chipping in with a goal while creating two big chances and averaging one key pass per match.

The youngster is confident defensively too, making 1.9 tackles and 1.4 clearances per game while also winning 54% of his total duels, showcasing his ever-growing maturity.

With the defender becoming a key fixture in the team recently, Fotheringham won’t be ready to sell him anytime soon, but the lure of European football at a packed Ibrox, plus the chance to win trophies must put the Light Blues as frontrunners in the battle for his signature.

With the Croatian left back recently turning 30, there will be discussions regarding his long-term future fairly soon and Rangers should be looking for replacements to fill his void.

Jackson may not be the finished article yet, but if the Dutchman can bring him to Ibrox in January for a respectable fee, it may be a wise piece of business in the long run.

Aberdeen ‘confident’ Celtic won’t recall Liam Scales

Scottish Premiership manager Jim Goodwin is ‘confident’ that Celtic will not recall Liam Scales from his loan in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Impressing at Aberdeen

Since being loaned out to Aberdeen in the summer, the 24-year-old has played in third place in the Premiership table behind leaders Celtic and the Hoops’ Glasgow arch-rivals in second.

After receiving a call-up to the recent Republic of Ireland squad to face Norway in a friendly on Thursday, Aberdeen boss Goodwin commended Scales as being ‘outstanding’ so far this season.

The Latest: No Celtic recall?

As quoted by The Press and Journal, Goodwin revealed that Aberdeen’s director of football Steven Gunn has been ‘in contact’ with Celtic over Scales, adding that the Dons are ‘confident’ that the Irishman will not be recalled and will be able to stay with them beyond January.

Goodwin said:  “Steven Gunn has been in contact with Liverpool about Leighton Clarkson and with Celtic about Liam Scales.

“At the moment we are confident that both will be part of our plans when the January window closes. However, we do have contingency plans in place just in case something were to happen.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-9/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Needs to continue his development

Given how well Scales has performed this term, it may be tempting for Ange Postecoglou to recall him back into his first-team squad.

However, the Celtic boss should allow the defender to continue his development at Aberdeen and come back a stronger player at the end of the campaign.

The Parkhead outfit already have four senior centre-backs to call upon in their squad, so Scales would struggle to get as much game-time should he return to his parent club.

Nonetheless, it is good to see the progress that he is making at Pittodrie, and there could well be a spot for him in the Celtic squad for next season if he maintains his performance levels.

Spurs: Malinovksyi a Maddison alternative

Tottenham Hotspur could be on the lookout for a creative midfielder during the January transfer window and one name is sure to be frequently mentioned.

Over the last couple of windows, the Lilywhites have been linked with a move for Leicester City maestro James Maddison, with transfer insider Dean Jones even suggesting that he was holding out for a move to one of the two north London giants.

More recently, journalist Pete O’Rourke suggested to Football FanCast that the England international would be a perfect signing to make in January as he could form a “formidable” partnership with the more defensively-sound Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Times reported that the Foxes were after a £50m fee back in the summer but that may have increased substantially, given he is currently at the World Cup and his immense form has continued.

Another name that is regularly linked with Spurs, including this week, is Atalanta star Ruslan Malinovskyi – according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), manager Antonio Conte and sporting director Fabio Paratici are keeping an eye on his situation.

It’s thought that he could be available for a transfer in January as he’s only playing a bit-part role for Gian Piero Gasperini this campaign.

That’s perhaps a little surprising, given just how good he has been for the Serie A side in recent seasons. For example, last term, the Ukraine international delivered ten goals and seven assists in 40 appearances across the Italian top-flight and both the Champions and Europa League, via Transfermarkt.

Malinovskyi was also deployed in a multitude of attacking and midfield roles, though his most regular spot was as a no.10 or as a second striker.

He’s capable of providing more than just goal contributions, too. As per FBref, the Ukrainian’s 1.24 blocks and 1.00 aerial duels won per 90 sees him rank within the top 17% of all his positional peers across Europe, whilst he also sits among the top 5% for shots and the top 6% for shot-creating actions.

Evidently, he can offer similar creativity to that of the Leicester man, as well as some key defensive contributions that’ll undoubtedly catch Conte’s eye.

Atalanta are thought to want just €18m (£15.5m) for the 29-year-old, who has a “cannon” of a left foot and was once said to be “decisive”, so he’s clearly available at a fraction of Maddison’s likely price tag.

Therefore, Paratici and co could find an ideal and bargain alternative in the 5 foot 11 “animal” – in the words of journalist Fernando Evangelio.

AND in other news, Spurs could have a new Dembele & Wanyama if Paratici signs £60m “superstar” after the World Cup…

Tottenham: Antonio Conte ‘fixed’ on Alessandro Bastoni

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is personally ‘fixed’ on signing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, according to reports from Italy.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing new defender?

The Lilywhites have had a real problem at the back recently, conceding 11 goals in their last five Premier League games and more than anyone else in the top eight throughout the season so far.

Conte will not be happy with that defensive record and it certainly is not a good portent if they wish to seal Champions League qualification for a second successive season. As such, reports have suggested that the north Londoners could look to solve this problem by bringing in a world-class central defensive option.

Villarreal star Pau Torres has been linked with a move to N17 recently, while it is well known that Tottenham’s sporting director Fabio Paratici targeted Bastoni in the summer.

The Latest: Conte ‘fixed’ on signing Bastoni…

A fresh report from Italy has provided the latest on Spurs and their chances of signing the latter.

The Italy centre-back, who is rumoured to likely cost around €55m (£48m), is a serious target for Conte, who apparently has Bastoni ‘fixed’ in his mind.

This information comes from Inter Live, who add that the 23-year-old is ‘more than an idea’ at Tottenham and that he is ‘urgently needed’ at the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Difficult…

Bastoni’s signing would perhaps be the most difficult to pull off mid-season, given that he apparently wants to remain at the San Siro.

However, if Spurs were to pull off this unlikely transfer coup, there is little dispute that he would strengthen their defensive options to no end.

Called a defensive ‘genius’ by Italian football expert Conor Clancy, the centre-back’s young age also indicates that he could improve even further, especially under a serial winner like Conte.

Newcastle must make move for Cody Gakpo

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing further additions in the January window in their bid to maintain their rampant start to the campaign, with a winger seemingly one position that may well be prioritised by manager Eddie Howe.

One man who could well be an ideal option is that of PSV Eindhoven starlet Cody Gakpo, with the Tynesiders having been named as one of the clubs who were interested in his services over the summer.

The 23-year-old – who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United of late – is “expected to leave” the Eredivisie outfit in 2023, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, with a fee of around €50m (£43m) having been mooted as a possible asking price.

The Netherlands international has become hot property amid his scintillating form at club level in recent times, with the “special” talent, as described by Romano, having scored 13 goals and registered 17 assists in just 24 games in all competitions so far this season.

Such an impact has not been an anomaly, however, with the 6-foot-4 starlet having scored 21 goals and laid on 15 assists in 47 games across all fronts last term, while his total tally for the club now stands at 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 games.

That rampant form has now been translated onto the international stage, with Gakpo having been simply “flying” for his country at the World Cup in Qatar, in the words of Romano, after netting three times in his opening three games at the tournament.

That haul has ensured that the forward now has five goals in only 11 appearances for his country and is currently the joint-highest scorer in the competition thus far, having scored a goal apiece in each of Oranje’s group games to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Dubbed a “real talent” by compatriot Nigel de Jong, the towering marksman notably lashed in a stunning strike in the draw with Ecuador in the second group game, having looked like a player who simply can’t be stopped at present.

Not only lethal in front of goal, it has been the forward’s all-round performance that has also been particularly eye-catching, with Gakpo having also been a real creative threat after averaging 1.7 key passes per game in the tournament so far, while also putting in a shift defensively after averaging 1.3 tackles per 90.

That outstanding form thus far – which has seen the player record an average match rating of 7.57, as per Sofascore – must surely have caught the attention of those back at St James’ Park, with such an addition likely to be one that can give Howe’s men a real boost in the quest for Champions League qualification.
