The Swiss took the lead after 28 minutes when Nadine Riesen rifled an effort in off the near post – an advantage they deserved after a promising first half during which Gerladine Reuteler smashed the crossbar amid a raucous atmosphere in Basel.

It was all change after the break, however, with Hegerberg drawing Norway level on 54 minutes when she beat Chelsea goalkeeper Livia Peng to a corner and powered home a header. Just four minutes later, Gemma Grainger's side took the lead as Switzerland defender Julia Stierli turned into her own net.

Hegerberg missed the opportunity to seal the victory when dragging a penalty wide of the post after a handball in the box, and moments later Switzerland had a spot-kick award of their own overturned by an automated offside decision.

Cecilie Fiskerstrand was called into action on a couple of occasions in the Norway goal but they held on and go top of Group A.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Norway's victory was their third against Switzerland in 2025. They had already overcome the same opponents by 2-1 and 1-0 scorelines in the Nations League earlier this year, before getting another one over on them on the first night of the Euros.

    THE MVP

Hegerberg may have missed from 12 yards but her overall display still inspired Norway's comeback victory. The decorated forward made a fast start to the game, going close in the early stages, before powering through the Swiss defence to head home the equaliser from close range – her 50th international goal. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is key to Norway's chances and this was a promising start.

    THE BIG LOSER

Norway put plenty of pressure on the Swiss backline in the second half and it was Stierli who eventually made the costly error. The centre-back had to play the ball with Hegerberg lurking and knocked it into her own net for a costly own goal.

'We deserved more' – Mauricio Pochettino shows raw emotion following USMNT's heartbreaking Gold Cup final defeat

    WHAT HAPPENED

Mauricio Pochettino struggled to contain his emotions while addressing the team in a behind-the-scenes video following the USMNT’s 2-1 defeat to Mexico in the 2025 Gold Cup final. The USMNT head coach praised his players’ resilience in what he described as an adverse situation and highlighted the growth they’ve shown since the previous camp. He even noted that members of the victorious Mexican team had acknowledged how much more competitive the U.S. had become.

“You deserved more,” Pochettino said on by U.S. Soccer. “And in the way you worked, the staff, everyone, I think today we deserved more. To lift the trophy because I think the performance was there, I think you fought with too many adversities, too many factors against you. That is not going to kill us, it’s going to make us stronger, and I want you to never give up. I think we still have time to be better, keep improving, but please don’t change."

The U.S. featured a largely young squad in their run to the Gold Cup final, with several players getting their first experience at a competitive tournament. Despite missing several stars, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah, among others, the team showed significant progress under the Argentine's leadership.

“For me, I feel so proud of you, but don’t change. That’s in the way that we build for the next, and the next, and the next until we get to the World Cup. And I think, if you change, we will find another way, but I think we all realize that we can be competitive, we can win, and we were so close, and people start to understand. Because Mexico was now saying to me in Spanish, ‘Well done, how you’ve played, how the team is so strong, how difficult it is to play against you,'" said Pochettino.

He added, “And believe me, in the past for sure, from October when we were here, we were talking about ‘Come on guys, come on guys, we need to be a team, we need to be a team’. And for sure it’s so painful now, but I think we need to have our heads up, because you did everything. I am so proud and I think all of the people outside will feel the same.”

'Everybody chose the same player' – Mikel Arteta hits back at Tony Adams' criticism of Martin Odegaard as Arsenal boss reveals vote for club captaincy

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has dismissed calls from Gunners legend Tony Adams to replace Martin Odegaard as captain with Declan Rice, revealing the Norwegian was the unanimous choice in a fresh squad vote. The north London side's boss insisted there is 'no question' over Odegaard’s leadership, with players and staff fully backing him ahead of the new season.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Adams had earlier urged Arteta to hand the armband to Declan Rice, claiming the Gunners needed a “winner” to finally secure the Premier League title. The Basque coach rejected that view, stating the decision reflected the overwhelming confidence the squad has in Odegaard. Arteta revealed that Arsenal conducted a new vote to decide their captain ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, with Odegaard winning comfortably.

    WHAT ARTETA SAID

Speaking to the media, Arteta said: “My opinion is clear. It’s not just my opinion, it’s all the staff and especially the players. I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday. And by a mile, by a big, big 100 marks, everybody’s choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard. That’s the clearest sign you can have of how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win.”

Arteta explained the vote was part of a wider refresh of the squad’s leadership group. He added: “We change a lot and we change all the leadership groups because a lot of the players that were there, they are gone. So we need to re-establish that, and it gives you so much information, how they feel about themselves and who they see as a leader. It was really interesting to analyse all the data and gather that information.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Odegaard has been Arsenal captain since 2022, overseeing three consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League. His leadership has drawn praise for composure and professionalism, though some critics – like Adams – believe the role should go to a more vocal figure. With the Gunners aiming to finally secure the league title under Arteta, the captaincy debate has added extra intrigue before the season kicks off.

Onana was left out of the squad for the Gunners match but this time he is on the bench at Craven Cottage. Amorim only made one change to his lineup, with Amad Diallo starting at wing-back over Diogo Dalot, as summer signing Benjamin Sesko was named among the substitutes for the second week in a row.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana was left out of United's clash with Arsenal last time out despite not being injured but Bayindir, who was the Cameroon international's number two last season, didn't cover himself in glory when called upon. That has, seemingly, led to links with Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens, who, if signed, could dislodge both stoppers at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen who will be the Red Devils' first-choice keeper when the end of the transfer window rolls around in just over a week.

In Onana's 34 Premier League appearances for United last season, he had a save percentage of 68.9, as he made 88 saves from 132 shots on target. In Bayindir's four league outings, his save percentage was a lowly 41.2 as he made eight saves from 17 shots on target.
