Ada Hegerberg scored a vital equaliser as Norway edged hosts Switzerland 2-1 on the opening night of Euro 2025, with the match decided by an own goal.

  The Swiss took the lead after 28 minutes when Nadine Riesen rifled an effort in off the near post – an advantage they deserved after a promising first half during which Gerladine Reuteler smashed the crossbar amid a raucous atmosphere in Basel.

  It was all change after the break, however, with Hegerberg drawing Norway level on 54 minutes when she beat Chelsea goalkeeper Livia Peng to a corner and powered home a header. Just four minutes later, Gemma Grainger's side took the lead as Switzerland defender Julia Stierli turned into her own net.

  Hegerberg missed the opportunity to seal the victory when dragging a penalty wide of the post after a handball in the box, and moments later Switzerland had a spot-kick award of their own overturned by an automated offside decision.

  Cecilie Fiskerstrand was called into action on a couple of occasions in the Norway goal but they held on and go top of Group A.

The decorated forward made a fast start to the game, going close in the early stages, before powering through the Swiss defence to head home the equaliser from close range – her 50th international goal. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is key to Norway's chances and this was a promising start.

  Norway put plenty of pressure on the Swiss backline in the second half and it was Stierli who eventually made the costly error. The centre-back had to play the ball with Hegerberg lurking and knocked it into her own net for a costly own goal.

Leandro Trossard has no desire to leave Arsenal but that may not be enough to keep him at the club next season.

  Mauricio Pochettino struggled to contain his emotions while addressing the team in a behind-the-scenes video following the USMNT’s 2-1 defeat to Mexico in the 2025 Gold Cup final. The USMNT head coach praised his players’ resilience in what he described as an adverse situation and highlighted the growth they’ve shown since the previous camp. He even noted that members of the victorious Mexican team had acknowledged how much more competitive the U.S. had become.

  “You deserved more,” Pochettino said on by U.S. Soccer. “And in the way you worked, the staff, everyone, I think today we deserved more. To lift the trophy because I think the performance was there, I think you fought with too many adversities, too many factors against you. That is not going to kill us, it’s going to make us stronger, and I want you to never give up. I think we still have time to be better, keep improving, but please don’t change."

  The U.S. featured a largely young squad in their run to the Gold Cup final, with several players getting their first experience at a competitive tournament. Despite missing several stars, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah, among others, the team showed significant progress under the Argentine's leadership.

  “For me, I feel so proud of you, but don’t change. That’s in the way that we build for the next, and the next, and the next until we get to the World Cup.
