Arsenal fans divided over Joe Gomez transfer report

Arsenal fans on Twitter have been discussing the prospect of signing Joe Gomez.

The Liverpool centre-back is reportedly unhappy with his lack of gametime at the Merseyside club, and Arsenal are apparently monitoring that situation.

Arsenal’s defence has been quite leaky this season – keeping only one away clean sheet all term.

Gomez would certainly help their defensive concerns as Liverpool kept 11 clean sheets in the 16 league matches he appeared in last term.

Despite Gomez’s obvious quality, some Arsenal supporters wouldn’t want the club to sign him.

Indeed, one fan stated that he’s overrated while a couple said that they’d rather go for Nathan Ake or Tyrone Mings.

Of course, there were other supporters who are hoping that the Gunners can get this deal done.

Whether or not Gomez signs for the London club remains to be seen, but if he does sign it will certainly divide supporters.

Here’s what Arsenal fans have been saying on Twitter…

Real Madrid should stick with Zinedine Zidane for now

It’s the middle of the 2018/19 season and Zinedine Zidane has just returned from his extended holiday and dived straight back into the fires of being a Real Madrid manager.

The two people who were supposed to take over from the Frenchman at the end of 2017/18 have failed quite miserably and spectacularly, forcing Los Blancos to go through three managers in less than a season’s worth.

Even for their standards, that was some pretty swift justice imposed by the Galacticos’ board, and that’s taking into account the fact Real Madrid had nine different coaches in the last nine years. That means they roughly change their manager every season or so. Quite an achievement, that one.

But Zidane was supposed to be different. And sure, he won three Champions League titles in a row, by all means, a historic accomplishment that guaranteed him the position for practically as long as he wanted it.

And at the end of 2017/18, it seemed like his tenure has reached its expiration date. The farewells were painful but no one could’ve predicted how poor Real Madrid would suddenly become with the Frenchman’s departure.

As a result, they only won one single trophy in the following season, and to add an insult to injury, it was a Club World Cup trophy – respectable but nowhere near the others that were up for grabs throughout the season.

Eliminated by Ajax quite early in the Champions League and put in their place in both the Copa del Rey and La Liga by Barcelona who ran away with the Spanish crown quite comfortably.

Florentino Perez simply had no choice – Zizou had to return and return he did, for better or worse.

Fast forward half a year and one or two crises and Zidane’s side are somewhere between pretty good and actually quite bad.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Sure, they have been on an upward trajectory in La Liga lately, managing to sit on the throne with both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona staring at their behind and keeping three clean sheets in the last three league games, but then we have the Champions League – a competition that they’re supposed to be crushing and dominating with Zidane at their helm.

But somehow, after two games played, Real Madrid are sitting bottom of the table after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat against PSG at Parc des Princes and an uninspiring 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu with Club Brugge.

So to sum up – you never know which Galacticos you’ll get. They could be pretty good but then they could also be pretty lacklustre as a whole, and that’s a big problem for Zidane. If they can’t find consistency, then their chances of success will plummet significantly.

And since their pedigree and reputation do demand victories and trophies, it would be far easier to just say Zidane is no longer the right man for the job and this team should look at a different captain to steady this ship that’s seemingly lost at sea.

But what good would that do?

It’s the devil you know, as they say, and in this case, it couldn’t be more true than that. Zidane knows this team and is still building something behind the scenes, regardless of the hiccups along the way.

Last season, the Galacticos were nowhere near that name and now, even though they’re still miles away, they are getting better with time and some credit simply has to be given to Zidane on this one.

Sacking him now might only disrupt their harmony and the process that they have going on. Changing coaches mid-season doesn’t really sound like a good idea at this moment and the 47-year-old should be given a chance to see this project through.

At the end of the campaign, if results are still underwhelming, Perez will surely find a suitable replacement in no time but for now he should stick with Zidane and support him fully going forward.

This is especially true given how this version of Real Madrid is definitely in transition, seeing how many of their star players are slowly but surely heading towards the sunset of their careers.

Can a fresh manager really handle the situation better than the one who spent years in the same locker room as those players? It’s unlikely, to say the least.

Maybe Zidane is no longer the person to put Los Blancos’ name at the peak of the summit but he will definitely get them as far as they can go with the resources and personnel they have at their disposal.

It remains to be seen, however, if he lives up to that expectation or not.

Perez has showcased a willingness to sack underperforming managers in the past when things haven’t been going Real’s way, and if results in Europe don’t improve rapidly it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Zidane in the firing line.

Only time will tell whether Perez is compelled to make a bold decision on the immensely successful manager’s future.

QPR: The numbers behind Nahki Wells’ impressive start to 2019/20

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Under the management of Mark Warburton, Queens Park Rangers have started their 2019/20 Championship campaign in strong form to emerge as contenders for the play-offs, and the performances of Nahki Wells will be giving the west London side faith that they really can return to the promised land of the Premier League.

The R’s have scored 18 goals so far in the current campaign, the joint-fourth highest of all teams in the division, and central to the club’s goalscoring record has been Wells – the Bermuda international who has scored six goals.

Wells’ goalscoring prowess, combined with Jordan Hugill’s six strikes, is propelling the club towards the realms of the play-offs, but it is Wells who is catching the eye with his clinical performances.

Whilst Wells and Hugill have both scored six league goals, Wells has done so having played just 519 minutes in the league, compared to Hugill’s 852 minutes.

The 29-year-old is also taking more shots in the box, averaging one every 34.6 minutes, while Hugill is taking a shot from inside the penalty area every 47.3 minutes in the league.

Wells is playing a hugely important role for Warburton’s side in 2019/20 – not only scoring goals but doing so at a ridiculously clinical rate, holding the best minutes-per-goal (87) of any striker in the Championship to have scored more than three goals.

If the striker is able to continue scoring at this remarkable efficiency, then the west London outfit could truly be in with a chance of returning to the English top-flight and ending a six-year absence in the process.

Tottenham boss Pochettino must be having sleepless nights over midfield dilemma

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has midfield options coming out of his ears right now, and the key selection dilemma must surely be causing him sleepless nights.

Take this weekend for the visit of Crystal Palace, for example.

Assuming Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Eric Dier are fit and available for selection after the club confirmed their return to training on Thursday, Pochettino has those three, plus Son Heung-Min, Christian Eriksen, Moussa Sissoko, Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Dele Alli, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Victor Wanyama and Oliver Skipp to choose from, for what is likely five spots in that area.

That list of names doesn’t even include summer arrival Giovani Lo Celso, who is unlikely to be back in action until November having suffered a hip injury.

While it is often said that managers would prefer to have selection headaches than not having enough good players to pick from, this might be too far the other way!

For example, a quick glance at the aforementioned list and most people would probably select Ndombele, Son and Eriksen as regular starters, with Alli another popular choice.

Yet, Sissoko, Winks and Lamela have started all four of the north London outfit’s Premier League encounters to date this term, and with the former duo also racking up 85 appearances in all competitions between them in 2018/19, it seems like they are at the forefront of their manager’s thinking.

When Lo Celso does return it will be an even more difficult decision, and Pochettino surely faces the potential issue of players becoming unhappy at their lack of minutes, even with the possibility of rotation between the top flight, the Champions League and the domestic cup competitions.

We certainly don’t envy the former Southampton boss on this particular matter.

Nottingham Forest’s Sammy Ameobi could have a field day on Saturday

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Nottingham Forest will be looking to continue a rich vein of form as they host Barnsley at the City Ground later this afternoon.

Sabri Lamouchi has steered his side to six straight games without defeat, leaving them ninth in the Championship table.

They’ve had some tough-looking fixtures in that run too, namely West Brom, who are the only side to pick up all three points against the Reds this season.

Now they face one of the league’s basement boys as the Tykes sit in 22nd having won just one match all season.

And there’s one area of the pitch that could bring them success.

On the Chalkboard

Forest winger Sammy Ameobi will be coming up against a rather inexperienced full-back in Toby Sibbick and that could swing the game in the home side’s favour before a ball has even been kicked.

Before this season the 20-year-old had only featured 26 times at League One level for Wimbledon before earning a move to Oakwell in the summer.

He’s played every minute of their Championship campaign so far, five times at right-back where he has only averaged a rating of 6.68.

His key attribute is in the tackle, where he has made 3.3 per game this season, but the rest of his game falls short defensively. This is where Ameobi has the potential to dominate.

The former Newcastle United winger wins 2.6 aerial duels per game whereas the Barnsley defender has just one all season.

Watch Nottingham Forest Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Ameobi has nearly five inches on Sibbick, so that’s quite clearly a mismatch in height.

The young right-back needs to be careful in the tackle as Forest’s wide man is fouled 1.1 times per game probably as a result of the marauding runs he makes, averaging 1.4 dribbles per game.

Furthermore, 43% of Forest’s attacks come on the left side of midfield meaning Ameobi is likely to be in the thick of it.

If you consider that aspect of Forest’s play and the disappointing defensive stats Sibbick boasts, Ameobi has an excellent chance of adding to his one assist this season and putting in a good performance.

Fans react as Celtic lead the charge for foreign referees

[ad_pod ]

There has been a cautious welcome from Scottish football fans to a report suggesting foreign referees could soon be in charge of Scottish matches.

According to a report in The Daily Record, that notion is being pushed strongly by Celtic after a meeting of Premiership clubs and the SFA to discuss the current issues with referees and discipline.

In 2010, during a strike called by referees, match officials were called in from Israel and Luxembourg before the problems were resolved.

This season there has been an unprecedented focus on refereeing decisions with a red card rescinded against Alfredo Morelos on the opening weekend of the season kicking off the mayhem.

A new Compliance Officer, Clare Whyte, at the SFA has complicated the issues through mixed messages and inconsistencies being sent out almost on a weekly basis.

It remains unclear in what circumstances the Compliance Officer can overrule decisions witnessed by match officials with almost all top flight clubs issuing statements of concern at some stage this season.

Celtic are reportedly keen to play a key role in drawing up recommendations for reforms to the current refereeing setup in Scotland, backing a proposal to recruit officials from other countries – similar ideas have already been floated by manager Brendan Rodgers and Tom Boyd.

The mechanics and costs of bringing in foreign referees has still to be assessed. Whether they’d get co-operation from Scottish assistants remains to be seen but the principle seems to be one that has support among fans of many clubs throughout Scotland.

Here’s a look at how they reacted on Twitter…

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen ripped into by Denmark fans

[ad_pod ]

Denmark fans on Twitter ripped into Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen following his performance in the disappointing 0-0 draw against Georgia on Sunday.

The nation had the chance to go top of Group D – above the Republic of Ireland – with a win in Tbilisi at the weekend, but they failed to get it in what was a largely dour contest between the two countries.

Supporters may well have been expecting another big showing from their 27-year-old talisman after he scored two and assisted a further two in the 6-0 thrashing of Gibraltar on Thursday, but it wasn’t forthcoming.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Spurs man, who has one goal in four outings for the north London outfit this term, failed to grab the scrappy encounter by the scruff of the neck, and made little impact in the final third for the Danes despite playing in a No.10 role.

It was something that didn’t go unnoticed by Denmark supporters on the popular social media platform, who wasted little time in criticising Eriksen for his display.

While one labelled him as “frighteningly poor”, another told him directly “you disappointed us today”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Newcastle confident of signing Lingard

An exciting Newcastle United transfer claim has been made regarding their attempts to sign Jesse Lingard…

What’s the talk?

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that the Magpies are closing in on a deal to bring the midfielder to the Tyneside club this week.

He tweeted: “Newcastle are confident of signing Jesse Lingard in the next 48 hours. Looks like a loan deal. Told Lingard isn’t against a permanent move to SJP but wants game time first and then to assess options.”

Pete Graves has since revealed that Newcastle are pushing hard to get this one over the line and are waiting for Manchester United to give the green light.

The Sky Sports reporter added: “#nufc pushing hard to sign Jesse Lingard on loan from #mufc BUT awaiting final decision from Old Trafford. Club will pay loan fee plus full wages. Lingard desperate to play and speak to Newcastle as he weighs up his options. This one could yet happen.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted by this news, as it suggests that this particular transfer saga is coming to a successful end for the club. With less than a week to go before the window slams shut, the Magpies need to start getting deals done quickly, and securing Lingard on loan in the next two days could be a major boost for Eddie Howe.

He could be a fantastic addition to the team and give the fans a much-needed lift, with their side still sat in the relegation zone despite the win over Leeds at the weekend. Lingard is a proven Premier League performer who has the potential to come in and be a key player for the Toon in the coming months.

The England international proved his quality during a loan spell with West Ham last season as he was directly involved in 13 goals in 16 matches for the Hammers. He produced nine goals and four assists to help David Moyes’ side to a Europa League finish, and he could hopefully provide a similar level of end product for the Magpies to help them stave off relegation to the Championship.

Lingard has also shown off his talent at international level, with two goals and two assists in six World Cup 2022 qualifiers. This shows that he can do it for club and country, emphasising the point that he could be an excellent prospective signing for Newcastle.

Therefore, their supporters will be buzzing with the prospect of him arriving at St James’ Park on loan in the next 48 hours.

Celtic: Whelan predicts Reo Hatate interest

New Celtic signing Reo Hatate will already have caught the eye of clubs in England, Noel Whelan has claimed.

The lowdown

The Japan international has barely been at Celtic a month, with his signing confirmed on 31 December as part of a J1 League triple swoop by Ange Postecoglou. The Hoops paid £1.4m to sign the midfielder, who penned a four-and-a-half year contract at Parkhead.

He produced a sensational performance against title rivals Rangers last week, scoring twice and providing an assist, and he continued that strong form against Motherwell on Sunday by providing the assist for Liel Abada’s opener in the 4-0 victory at Fir Park.

Sports journalist Josh Bunting has already seen enough to label him a ‘stunning addition’ by the Hoops.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan suggested that clubs who come up from the English second tier may look to pursue Hatate in the summer based on his recent form.

When asked if English clubs ‘would be interested’ in the 24-year-old, the BBC radio pundit replied: “They will be. It might not be the top four in the Premier League but it might be people who get promoted from the Championship to the Premier League.”

The verdict

If he continues to shine, Hatate is bound to win some admirers outside Scotland, and he’s not the only one.

Kyogo Furuhashi, another signing from Japan in recent months, could conceivably end up in the Premier League in the not-too-distant future. According to a report from Calciomercato in September, Southampton are interested in the 13-goal forward.

This attests to the strength of Celtic’s recruitment, and while they would naturally want to be in a position to keep their best players, they may at least make a handsome profit on the likes of Hatate and Furuhashi (£4.86m) eventually if either or both were to be sold.

Gold issues exciting Spurs transfer update

Tottenham Hotspur want to bolster four key areas of Antonio Conte’s squad, according to emerging claims…

What’s the word?

football.london reporter Alasdair Gold has told his YouTube channel that Spurs have made four different positions their priority during this month’s transfer window.

“There is a feeling within the club that Spurs need a right wing-back, a left-sided centre-back and a striker,” he revealed. “From what I understand, Conte agrees with that, but also would like a central midfielder. Four priority positions.”

Fantastic four?

It’s no secret that the north Londoners need additions as they lack the strength in depth to truly challenge some of the Premier League’s biggest teams for a place in the top four.

What Conte has already done with the current squad is quite remarkable, having gone unbeaten in the top-flight under his stewardship but if they are to get back onto the next level, then chairman Daniel Levy must back his man with serious investment.

After selling Serge Aurier and replacing him with Emerson Royal in the summer, it’s a surprise to see a new right wing-back on the agenda but as Matt Doherty’s future is dubious, the need for another option could make sense, especially if Conte isn’t convinced by the former Barca man’s attacking credentials.

Elsewhere, another central defender is certainly going to be among the priorities. Cristian Romero is still absent with an injury, whilst the Italian head coach has often deployed full-back Ben Davies in his back-three. Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez have looked a little suspect in recent games, too.

Of course, the need for a new forward has always been there but it’s a tricky problem to remedy as Harry Kane will always be the star man leading the line for Spurs. There aren’t many players who will want to be a backup but Conte does need an alternative, or even a partner to the England skipper.

It is also interesting to learn of Conte’s desire for a central midfielder, too. Spurs already have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, so perhaps he isn’t convinced by some of those options.

Either way, this latest development from one of the most reliable sources is certainly exciting and it would suggest that the Lilywhites will indeed be active this window.

Supporters around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium should be buzzing by this news.

AND in other news, Conte can finally axe “unplayable” Spurs dud by signing “devastating” £26m-rated beast…
