Warne relaxed over Clarke-Watson rift

Shane Warne believes fierce arguments between Michael Clarke and Shane Watson have been at the root of a rift that is nowhere near as dramatic as the former coach Mickey Arthur has alleged.

Shane Warne believes fierce arguments between Michael Clarke and Shane Watson over the latter’s place in Australia’s Test match batting order have been at the root of a rift that is nowhere near as dramatic as the former coach Mickey Arthur has alleged. A close friend and mentor to both Clarke and Watson, Warne paralleled his relationship with Steve Waugh, another pair who disagreed fundamentally on many cricket issues but found a way to work together.Arthur’s alleged claim in leaked legal documents that Clarke had described Watson as a “cancer” on the Australian team has heightened scrutiny of a partnership that has often been strained. But Warne told ESPNcricinfo that while the views of Clarke and Watson had often diverged, the perception of the two senior players warring with each other had been enhanced by the national team’s indifferent recent results and the allrounder’s shuffling around the batting order by Clarke.”I found when I was captain of Watto in the IPL. I just backed him 100% and he’d end up being player of the tournament,” Warne said. “Pup’s been doing that but I think what people have missed is they’ve debated over where Shane Watson should bat. Watto wants to open, Michael Clarke’s thinking strong middle order, so I’m sure they’ve had a few heated debates about where he should bat.”How that translates into they hate each other, they don’t get along, blah blah blah, it’s just been blown out of proportion I believe. And I know both the guys really well and I speak to both all the time. So I think it’s not a factual statement. But because of the batting situation and the way the team’s going, sometimes people can read too much into that. They might have disagreements of opinions over things, but that’s okay. You don’t need to always agree and it doesn’t equal hating each other either.”Watson’s relationship with Clarke reached a low point during the tour of India earlier this year when he was suspended from the Mohali Test match by a leadership group comprised of Clarke, Arthur and the team manager Gavin Dovey. Warne said his working axis with Waugh had been similarly tested by the decision to drop him from the Test team in the West Indies early in 1999. A few months later they found themselves celebrating on the Lord’s balcony, having played equally vital roles in winning the World Cup.”Coach Geoff Marsh still wanted to go with me, so it all got a bit ugly, and that was not great to be honest, it wasn’t very easy,” Warne said of the selection meeting in Antigua, 14 years ago. “But we always had respect for each other. We always had different views – Steve was a very defensive, negative type of person, he was always a match saver. He wouldn’t go out there and tear an attack apart, he would just slowly go about it and grind them down. I was a bit more aggressive, had a bit more flair about my game and was more of a risk-taker. Sometimes that works, and that’s why we had quite a successful period as captain and vice-captain because we contrasted.”Warne suggested that kind of contrast should be regarded as a strength rather than a weakness by Clarke and Watson, and encouraged the captain’s authority to be challenged respectfully by others as the best way for the team to function. The new coach Darren Lehmann appears already to have helped in this way.”They have disagreements in the change room on certain things and batting orders and that sort of stuff,” Warne said. “But that’s healthy, you don’t want ten robots in there just going ‘yes Michael, whatever you want Michael’. You want someone to say ‘I disagree with that Pup, let’s declare at 320’. In the end he’s accountable because the wins and losses go against his name. I think he’s pretty good at collecting all the information in the dressing room and then making his own decision.”The big question is about respect versus being liked. We all like to be liked but it’s more important to have respect. If you respect each other, no matter whether you have differences of opinions or you don’t quite see eye to eye. You might not go out and socialise once you walk off the ground, but on that field you’d do anything for each other, and that’s what we had for a long period. The only way to get that respect is to earn it, how people conduct themselves around the group, how they put themselves out for you, are they thoughtful towards you as well. It can’t be one way traffic all the time.”You can follow Warne’s views this summer on the Shane Warne Cricket app.

KKR bat first vs CSK at Eden Gardens; Pandey replaces injured Venkatesh

CSK handed Urvil Patel a debut, while also bringing Devon Conway and R Ashwin back

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-2025Ajinkya Rahane, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain, has chosen to bat first against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in Eden Gardens’ last league game of IPL 2025. KKR are still in the playoffs race with three league games left, but likely need to win all three to stay in contention. CSK are already out.KKR come into this game having won their last two matches. They batted first in both those games, and this, Rahane said, was one of the reasons for his decision at the toss. The pitch at Eden Gardens wore a tacky look before the start of play, with a few loose plates on its top surface – spinners from both sides could come into play as the match goes on.KKR were without Venkatesh Iyer, who picked up an injury while training on the eve of the match, and has stitches in his hand. Manish Pandey came in for him. KKR named a starting XI that bats deep, with Moeen Ali slotted at No. 9. Harshit Rana will be their likely Impact Player, though Anukul Roy or Mayank Markande could also come in if the pitch proves particularly spin-friendly.CSK made three changes, handing Urvil Patel, recently signed as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi, a debut and bringing back offspinner R Ashwin and the New Zealand top-order batter Devon Conway. They replaced Shaik Rasheed, Deepak Hooda and Sam Curran. Shivam Dube, who starts on the bench, is expected to come in during their chase as their Impact Player.Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 4 Angkrish Raghuvanshi, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Ramandeep Singh, 9 Moeen Ali, 10 Vaibhav Arora, 11 Varun ChakravarthyImpact Player list: Anrich Nortje, Mayank Markande, Harshit Rana, Anukul Roy and Luvnith SisodiaChennai Super Kings: 1 Ayush Mhatre, 2 Urvil Patel, 3 Devon Conway, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Dewald Brevis, 6 R Ashwin, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Anshul Kamboj, 9 Noor Ahmad, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Matheesha PathiranaImpact Player list: Shivam Dube, Deepak Hooda, Jamie Overton, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Ramakrishna Ghosh.

Assad Vala hopes PNG's World Cup appearance will inspire more children to play the sport

The PNG captain also called Kiplin Doriga’s lower-order rearguard ‘the blueprint of what we expect from him’

Mohammad Isam21-Oct-2021Papua New Guinea will understandably leave Muscat crestfallen, after bowing out winless from the T20 World Cup. After their 84-run loss to Bangladesh, their captain Assad Vala embodied their frustrations and spoke about where they will need to improve when they are back home.”I am proud that we are here but I wouldn’t say we achieved,” Vala said. “We wanted to win games here. Not to make up the numbers. Losing all three games is pretty disappointing. If we could play our best cricket, we would have given ourselves the chance. We were up and down. We have to find out how to get the best out of ourselves.”When asked what the team would leave the T20 World Cup with, Vala picked their fielding out as a positive but said there was a lot of room for improvement with bat and ball.

“We need to be better,” he said. “Batsmen need to score consistently. Bowlers have to execute well under pressure. Fielding improved in the three games but we can be better there as well.”There’s a lot of learnings but we were not good enough. I think especially our batting really let us down. No one put their hands up, especially myself and the senior players.”On Thursday, PNG bowled contained Bangladesh to 113 for 4 over their first 15 overs, but leaked 68 runs in the last five. Then their chase of 182 fell apart from the start – they stumbled to 29 for 7 before being bowled out for 97.”We believed we could win if we had a good start. It has been costing us,” Vala said. “We have been losing too many wickets in the powerplay. It is hard to come back from it.”I think we haven’t played a complete match. We started well in this match, but we went for 63 in the last five overs. Our bowlers couldn’t perform under pressure.”Kiplin Doriga’s unbeaten 46 got PNG up to their eventual total of 97, and ensured they batted on until midway through the final over. “I think he played really well,” Vala said. “He pulled us out and got us to 97 runs.”He has been really good in the last two games. We need him to keep working hard and be more consistent. It is the blueprint of what we expect from him.”Vala said the legacy of this side, the first from PNG to play in a World Cup, would be the influx of more children into the game.”There are a lot of kids playing these days. If we can have more juniors coming through the system, we will have more depth. I am really proud of the effort of the boys, but the best is yet to come. We have learned a lot from this tournament.”

LANCE!

Michael Hussey out of England tour

Michael Hussey has been allowed to skip Australia’s tour of Ireland and England in June and July to be with his family after the premature birth of his child. Cricket Australia said he will be replaced by Queensland batsman Peter Forrest in the 15-man squad.”Due to our baby being born three months early, it is important for the family for me to be here at this time,” Hussey said. “It is always difficult to miss any tour for Australia and I thank CA for their understanding of our family’s situation.”Forrest, who has played 11 ODIs so far, had been named as the stand-by player when the squad was named in May. He will now be part of the touring party that leaves Australia on June 14.The Australians will play Leicestershire in a tour game on June 21 before taking on Ireland in a one-off ODI in Stormont on June 23. After another tour game against Essex, Australia will play England at Lord’s on June 29 in the first of five ODIs.

Wainwright weaves Derbys win

Derbyshire beat Northamptonshire by 202 runs at the Racecourse

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2012David Wainwright marked his debut with a career-best match-winning performance to take Derbyshire to a crushing 202-run victory over Northamptonshire at Derby.Wainwright, the former Yorkshire left-arm spinner, found turn and bounce on a fourth day Racecourse pitch to take 6 for 33 from an unbroken spell of 26 overs as the visitors were all out for 134 after Derbyshire had set them 337 to win from a minimum of 72 overs.Any chance they had of chasing down that target quickly vanished when they slipped to 41 for 3 and Wainwright put Derbyshire well on the road to victory when he struck twice in eight balls before tea. James Middlebrook and Chaminda Vaas dug in for 15 overs but Wainwright removed them both and the end came 35 minutes before the close when Wes Durston bowled Lee Daggett.Derbyshire had been in control of the contest at the start of the day with a lead of 235, and the opening pair took their stand to 224 before Martin Guptill skied a pull to deep square leg and was caught for 137 which included a six and 13 fours. The only disappointment for the home side was that Paul Borrington failed to reach a maiden Championship hundred when he fenced at Daggett and edged to slip two runs short of the mark, but his 272-ball innings had been a big factor in putting Derbyshire into a winning position.Dan Redfern and Durston added quick runs before the declaration came at 314 for 3 and the morning session ended with a big wicket when Northamptonshire opener Stephen Peters was lbw to Mark Footitt off the last ball before lunch. Kyle Coetzer was taken at the second attempt at third slip off Tony Palladino and the rest of the day belonged to Wainwright, who bowled with guile and accuracy to snare his victims. After David Sales perished going half forward, Rob Newton, who made 58, and Alex Wakely looked to be steering Northamptonshire towards calmer waters but they both fell either side of tea after surviving 20 overs. The only threat to Derbyshire were the dark clouds gathering over the ground but the rain held off and the floodlights meant the visitors could not rely on bad light to save them. Luck was also against them when Middlebrook’s firm drive hit Redfern at silly point and ricocheted to Footitt at backward point and David Willey became Wainwright’s sixth victim when he was lbw playing no shot.Durston had the last word when he beat Daggett’s forward lunge to spark off wild celebrations among the Derbyshire fielders, who had launched their season with the county’s second biggest win over Northamptonshire.

A test of Zimbabwe's progress

Zimbabwe are gearing up for their third inbound tour in as many months as they host New Zealand from Saturday. For some other teams, it would be international overload but for a side that are eager to play and desperate to learn and improve, it’s perfect. With two Twenty20s, three ODIs and another one-off Test, there is a good enough mix of cricket to judge what progress has been made since their stirring return to Test cricket in August. If Bangladesh provided Zimbabwe with the opportunity to prove they belong at the highest level, Pakistan showed them how far behind the top tier they really are. After winning fans, gladdening hearts and building confidence against a regressive Bangladesh side, they were sent a few steps back by a Pakistan team that had an uncharacteristically controversy free tour and played like a unit from start to finish. Now, New Zealand have arrived, providing a challenge that is different to that of the two sub-continental sides. While flair and flamboyance is how the Asians like to play their cricket, New Zealand bring a more clinical, disciplined and effective game. In some ways, it’s a more even contest for Zimbabwe, who will likely need to prepare less for the unexpected burst of colour that a Tamim Iqbal or Sohail Tanvir can produce and more for grafting and grinding. They will have to put in sustained effort and not rely on mere moments of magic.Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, said that the New Zealand series would likely turn out to be the best yardstick to measure his men because of their style of play. The performances against Pakistan would have set Zimbabwe back a little but it may not only have adverse effects. With the spotlight turned the other way, Zimbabwe’s cricketers have been able to return to their domestic franchises, play in a few low-key Logan Cup matches, fine-tune skills, regroup and get ready for a mini-restart.Preparation has been a key part of Zimbabwe’s approach so far. Before they hosted Bangladesh, they played in a tri-series against South Africa A and Australia A and in two first-class matches against Australia. Although the results did not go their way, the match practice paid off and Brendan Taylor is hoping for much of the same come New Zealand.”We’ve put in some great preparation and our confidence is good,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I understand that New Zealand haven’t had any cricket for a few months, so hopefully we’ll have a bit of an upper hand.” New Zealand have not played since their World Cup semi-final defeat to Sri Lanka in March, although they have held training camps at home and in Pretoria. The value of time in the middle cannot be underestimated though, as South Africa, who have had a similar time away from the game as New Zealand, showed in their T20 against Australia.New Zealand will have to start straight from the blocks but Zimbabwe have had two series to assess areas that need improvement. A problem that started against Bangladesh and exploded against Pakistan was their butter fingers. “The fielding really let us down against Pakistan. We just put down too many chances,” Taylor said. “We’ve gone away and ironed that out and worked on it so we should put on a much better performance.”Since both the batting and bowling showed great promise, Zimbabwe have maintained relative continuity in their selection. Their T20 squad includes 20-year old legspinner Natsai Mushangwe, who has only played 16 domestic T20 matches. He has a good first-class record, with 76 wickets from his 26 matches and is seen as replacement for Graeme Creamer, who is still on the mend after a knee injury. “We’ve really missed Graeme, especially in terms of adding a different dynamic to our bowling attack so Natsai is in the squad,” Taylor said. “He has heaps of talent and a very bright future.”Ray Price, Prosper Utseya and Malcolm Waller provide the other slow bowling options, while Zimbabwe have four seamers in the experienced Chris Mpofu, pacy Kyle Jarvis, brave Keegan Meth and all-round Elton Chigumbura. Left-armer Brian Vitori still has a shin niggle and Zimbabwe are hoping he will be fit for the Test. “We can’t wait for him to get back to full fitness after he came onto the scene with a big bang, but luckily we have found some depth in a few other seamers now so we that’s good for us,” Taylor said. The batting is also loaded with experience in Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Charles Coventry and Taylor himself. The captain confirmed he will bat lower down the order in limited-overs with Chamu Chibhabha opening.”Chamu is more suitable at the top in a team context,” Taylor said. “I’ll be in the middle and we’ll also have Charles Coventry there. It’s great to have him back in the fold and I know he is dying to perform.” Forster Mutizwa is also in the line-up. He has had a fantastic start to the season with scores of 73 not out, 164 not out and 83 for the Eagles.Zimbabwe have not seen much of New Zealand in recent years, except for a match each in the 2010 World Twenty20 and the World Cup earlier this year. They have also had a series against the New Zealand A side last year.Three unofficial Tests were contested between the two sides, of which New Zealand A won two. Three of the players in New Zealand’s T20 side, Graeme Alridge, Martin Guptill and James Franklin, played in those matches while Chris Martin, who will play in the one-off Test, also featured. For Zimbabwe, Tino Mawoyo made his name in that series as their highest run-scorer while Waller also had strong showings. The series was an important step in Zimbabwe’s eventual return to the Test arena and Taylor said they learnt a lot from it. “We got some video footage from there which has also helped us prepare for this series,” he said. “And Chris Harris, who is with our Under-19s, has also been doing some work with us. We’re looking forward to a competitive series.”The ability to challenge has not been an area in which Zimbabwe have lacked this season. They matched Pakistan in the first innings of the one-off Test, and should have won one of the T20s and one of the ODIs. It’s the lack of belief to get over the line that has held Zimbabwe back a little. Their over-cautious approach is largely the cause of a fear of failure but they realise the need to find some self-assurance is pressing. That is something they have to discover quickly, because their next assignment will be away from the comfort of home, in New Zealand, and they will have to go there a settled and secure unit. Zimbabwe have given the locals much to cheer this season but, before they jet off, they will want to give them concrete victories and not just moments to celebrate.

Root's maiden ton hauls Yorkshire back

Joe Root scored a classic maiden first-class century to put Yorkshire back inthe match on the second day of their County Championship clash againstSussex at Scarborough

18-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Joe Root scored a classic maiden first-class century to put Yorkshire back inthe match on the second day of their County Championship clash againstSussex at Scarborough. The 20-year-old England Lions batsman, who also plays for Sheffield Collegiate, the same club for who Michael Vaughan first stepped out, was still there at theclose with 111 as Yorkshire reached 251 for 4 in 45 overs. Root’s chanceless century came off 188 deliveries and contained 18 cleanly-struck boundaries.Replying shortly before lunch to the visitors’ first-innings score of 398,Yorkshire suffered a blow in the third over when acting captain Jacques Rudolphwas out for only a single, the South African being tempted into a drive by WayneParnell and edging to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.Parnell struck again after the interval by trapping Joe Sayers lbw but hisnew-ball partner, James Anyon, went unrewarded for a fine spell of decidedlyquick seam bowling. Root, coming in at the fall of Rudolph’s wicket, was helped in repairing theearly damage by Anthony McGrath, and they moved the score on to 81 beforeMcGrath was lbw to Amjad Khan for 29.Another useful stand developed between Root and Jonny Bairstow with Rootpulling Khan fiercely for four to complete his fifth half-century of the seasonoff 83 balls with 10 boundaries. They had taken their partnership to 71 by tea but only four had been added inthe final session when Bairstow fell for 33 to a tumbling catch at first slip byMike Yardy to give James Anyon a much deserved wicket at the start of his secondspell. With Yorkshire 156 for 4, Gary Ballance came in to continue his good run ofform and he carved Anyon over the top of third man for six.Runs were coming rapidly but when Ballance swept hard at Monty Panesar hestruck Chris Nash a painful blow on the arm at short leg and had to leave thefield for treatment.Root was looking a class act and consecutive boundaries off Panesar and astraight drive for four at Kirk Wernars’ expense pushed him into the 90s. Hereached his century by slapping a loose ball from Anyon to the cover boundary toreceive a standing ovation. Ballance was 45 at stumps and his unbroken fifth-wicket partnership with Root was worth 95, Yorkshire having reduced the first-innings deficit to 147.Sussex had a chance to take control of the game when they resumed in themorning on 335 for 5 with Yardy on 126 and Wernars 16, but Yorkshire hit backwell by claiming the last five wickets for 63.In the day’s first over, Yardy glanced Ryan Sidebottom for four but the nextball he edged into Bairstow’s gloves to give the former England left-arm pacemanhis first five-wicket haul since returning to his native county at the start ofthe season. Richard Pyrah chipped in with two wickets in three balls as Parnell hookedstraight to Sidebottom at long leg and Wernars chopped into his stumps. The first eight wickets of the Sussex innings had fallen to pace butleg-spinner Adil Rashid, came on to snuff out the tail by gaining lbw verdictsagainst both Khan and Panesar.Soon after midday, with umpire Trevor Jesty off the field for an hour with asickness complaint, former Yorkshire and England all-rounder Craig White, nowthe county’s deputy director of cricket, came on to stand at square leg for afew overs until being replaced by 75-year-old local umpire Fred Bernard. Bernard returned an hour before the close when Jesty was forced from the field again.
