Derbyshire players pledge their immediate future to the Club

Michael Di Venuto, (1538 First Class runs in 2002) will once again take up an overseas playing slot at the County

Derbyshire CC Media Release30-Oct-2002Following a much improved 2002 season, most of Derbyshire’s most promising cricketers have pledged their immediate future to the Club;Michael Di Venuto, (1538 First Class runs in 2002) will once again take up an overseas playing slot at the County.Steven Selwood (524 One Day runs) has signed a two year full time playing contract, after completing his University studies this year. Tom Lungley has also signed a two year contract as he looks to build upon considerable all round promise. Luke Sutton, capped at the end of the season, has signed an extension of a further year, keeping him at the Club until at least the end of season 2004. Neil Gunter and Rawait Khan have signed new 1 year contracts.Discussions are in progress with Lian Wharton and Karl Krikken, (both of whom have been offered new 1 year contracts), and with Chris Bassano (newly capped) and Andrew Gait who have been offered extensions to existing contracts that expire at the end of 2003. All other retained staff have been kept on existing contracts.Disappointingly, the Club has also been informed, in line with ECB Regulations, that Essex CCC wish to negotiate with Mohammad Ali, who has not yet committed his future to Derbyshire, despite the fact that he was offered a two year contract some time ago. The resultant situation may or may not influence the choice of second overseas player, although presently negotiations have progressed well with a senior batting all-rounder."The overall picture is extremely positive, with the nucleus of the squad pretty much confirmed in place, and we will also be investigating a number of possibilities to strengthen the playing potential at the Club. In addition, the position left vacant by Colin Wells’ departure is being discussed at present, along with the type of role that is required of any new appointee," said Chief Executive, John Smedley.

Rangers reject bids for Edmundson

A major update has emerged regarding Rangers dud George Edmundson, it could lead to Ross Wilson needing to make a strong decision.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Rangers have received and rejected several offers for centre-back Edmundson following the end of the defender’s loan spell with English Championship side Derby County. The report claims that a number of English clubs are keen on signing Edmundson and have tested Rangers’ resolve with opening salvos.

Edmundson spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan to Derby after being slapped with a seven-game ban by the Scottish FA for breaking Covid-19 regulations. The 23-year-old attended a party alongside teammate Jordan Jones during lockdown and was punished for his actions with the ban, leading to his exit from Rangers on loan during the January window.

After Edmundson was found guilty of breaking the protocols, former Scotland international Gary Caldwell suggested that Steven Gerrard “can’t trust” the defender on or off the pitch. He told BBC Sportsound, as transcribed by the Daily Record:

“If you can’t trust the players to adhere to Covid regulations, how can he trust them on the football park? To mark a man from a set piece?

“It’s disappointing for Rangers but also disappointing for Scottish football.

“The situation clubs find themselves in financially, they’re going to need help at some point so we need to be showing Scottish football in the best light and unfortunately, we didn’t do that.”

Wilson must axe him

The time is up for Edmundson at Ibrox and director of football Ross Wilson must now ruthlessly axe him from the club this summer. He has shown, as Caldwell explained, that he cannot be trusted off the pitch and the trust between himself and Gerrard may have been affected in terms of his on the pitch responsibilities as well. The fact Gerrard wanted to send him out on loan to Derby suggests that Edmundson is not part of his immediate plans and Rangers could benefit from moving him on as swiftly as possible.

Wilson needs to take advantage of the interest in Edmundson to bring in a respectable transfer fee for the defender, which could then bolster his own transfer plans. If Rangers can get a six or seven-figure offer for Edmundson then they could use that to bring in Gerrard’s targets to bolster the squad ahead of next season.

The £3.7k-per-week dud also failed to catch the eye on loan at Derby. In 10 Championship appearances for Wayne Rooney’s side, Edmundson averaged an unimpressive WhoScored rating of 6.62 at centre-back. Meanwhile, Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun all averaged WhoScored ratings of 7.06 or higher in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers at centre-back. This suggests that Edmundson is not even close to Gerrard’s other centre-back options in terms of quality before you even take his off-field issues into considerations. So, Wilson now needs to facilitate an exit for Edmundson and send him back to England this summer.

Australia rest four for SA 'A' match

Stuart MacGill will have what might well be his only bowl on South African soil this weekend when Steve Waugh’s Australians meet a South Africa `A’ team in a four-day match at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth starting on Friday

Peter Robinson28-Feb-2002Stuart MacGill will have what might well be his only bowl on South African soil this weekend when Steve Waugh’s Australians meet a South Africa `A’ team in a four-day match at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth starting on Friday. The Australians have rested Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Damien Martyn and Matthew Hayden for this match on the unsurprising premise that all four had outstanding matches during the Wanderers Test.Working on the assumption that it would be unlikely for Australia to feel the need to change a team that has just won its last match by an innings and 360 runs, this weekend’s game should provide MacGill, along with Andy Bichel, Darren Lehmann and Shane Watson, with their first outing of the tour. From a South African point of view, the match will provide players like captain Daryll Cullinan, left-arm spinner Gulam Bodi and Western Province left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby to press for inclusion in the side for the second Test match at Newlands next weekend. The South African side for the second Test is expected to be named on Monday.TeamsSA `A’ team: Jacques Rudolph (Northerns), Graeme Smith (WP), Martin van Jaarsveld (Northerns), Daryll Cullinan (Capt, Gauteng), Hashim Amla (KZN), Justin Kemp (EP), Robin Peterson (EP), Gulam Bodi (KZN), Thami Tsolekile (WP), Dewald Pretorius (FS), Charl Willoughby (WP). Everton: Benitez sanctions move for Coady

Rafa Benitez is yet to be confirmed as the new manager of Everton but it already looks as though he’s doing the groundwork on recruitment.

What’s the word?

One area of the squad that Everton are looking to strengthen this term is in defence.

The Toffees have been linked with a number of central defenders over the last few months including Kalidou Koulibaly and Merih Demiral.

However, Benitez has his own targets in mind, one of which is already plying their trade in the Premier League.

According to Football Insider, the Spaniard has sanctioned a move for Wolves skipper Conor Coady.

The 28-year-old was discussed by the hierarchy and Nuno Santo before talks stalled over his appointment in Merseyside.

However, the England international has also been talked about during talks with Benitez as Everton look to launch a bid this summer.

The new Carragher

Everton supporters might not like the idea of the Spaniard becoming their new manager, nor will they be too keen to see one of their transfer targets compared to a Liverpool legend.

However, with Benitez set to become the new head coach at Goodison Park, comparisons will naturally be drawn between his previous spell in Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

He will have his work cut out to drag Everton towards their ultimate goal of Champions League football but one player who could aid their cause is Coady.

A boyhood Liverpool fan, the Scouser is a bubble of energy and has an infectious personality that would ensure he fits in at any new side.

Though, a move back to his hometown would be absolutely perfect for the centre-back.

He is a leader of men and in two of his five England caps to date, he has captained the Three Lions. It’s an accomplishment that Wolves reporter Tim Spiers described as “phenomenal.”

Immediately, we begin to get a feel for why Coady is like Carragher. Both players were leaders of men and they enjoyed barking orders at their teammates on the pitch.

Speaking about the footballer turned pundit previously, Emile Heskey commented: “Virgil van Dijk is the one player in the [Liverpool] team who is a leader, and they haven’t had that since Jamie Carragher left. Someone who barks out orders and gets them out of sticky situations.”

That says a lot about not only the former defender’s character but also his qualities on the field of play.

Coincidentally, no other player has made more appearances under the incoming Everton boss than Carragher. He featured on 326 occasions for the 61-year-old, proving to be a dominant figure in the backline.

Coady might not be as physical but in terms of the way he leads the team forward, there are few better in the Premier League.

Ruben Neves waxed lyrical about those very qualities earlier this year: “I’ve never played with a player like him,” he began. “Well, actually, when I played in the Portugal squad when I was young, we had a player like him that was always talking and helping the team. That was Ruben Dias, who is in Manchester City now.”

Neves added: “So, he’s the second centre-half I’ve played with who talks and helps the team that much. Conor always gives us the best instructions to do our best on the pitch.”

Supporters might point towards his inability to play in a four-man defence but that is easily remedied by a change in system.

Benitez is right to consider him this summer if he becomes Everton boss.

Gooch has shocker as Sunderland slip up

Sunderland midfielder Lynden Gooch had something of a shocker on Wednesday evening as Sunderland slipped up in their play-off semi-final first leg.

Having picked up four points against Lincoln City over their two meetings in the regular League One season, with a thumping 4-0 victory at the LNER Stadium back in December and a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light in March, Lee Johnson’s Sunderland side could well have gone into Wednesday’s clash against Michael Appleton’s outfit believing they held the upper hand over the Imps.

However, this was far from the case in the fixture itself, with second-half goals from Tom Hopper and Brennan Johnson securing a hugely important 2-0 win for Lincoln, and leaving the Black Cats with it all to do in the second leg of the tie if they are to have any hope of playing Championship football next season.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering the result, a number of Lee Johnson’s players did not fare particularly well in the match, although, Lynden Gooch’s performance stood out as one of the worst on the night.

Deployed in the middle of an attacking midfield three, just behind centre-forward Charlie Wyke, Gooch was extremely ineffectual for the Black Cats in an offensive capacity, managing no shots on target and completing just one of his four attempted dribbles.

The £5k-per-week midfielder failed to ever really get a foot on the ball either, with his 47 touches over the 90 minutes only being more than that of Charlie Wyke, Jordan Jones and Denver Hume of Sunderland’s starting outfielders – with the latter of this trio being withdrawn after 11 minutes due to injury.

And, on the occasions the £540k-rated man did have the ball at his feet, he was extremely reckless with it, losing possession a whopping 20 times in the match, with no other Black Cats player losing the ball more often than the USA international.

Furthermore, Gooch also committed four fouls – with no player from either side making more – and won just three of his 11 duels – with a 27% success rate – while his overall SofaScore match rating of 6.3 was the joint-worst of any of Johnson’s starting XI.

As such, if Sunderland are to have any chance of overturning their deficit in the second leg of the semi-final, Gooch will undoubtedly have to up his game – if, that is, Johnson opts to stick with the 25-year-old in his starting XI.

Spurs’ Winks facing axe vs Sheff Utd?

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to bounce back after a dismal few weeks when they welcome already-relegated Sheffield United to North London this evening.

Last weekend, Spurs were defeated in yet another final as they were completely played off the park by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, continuing a 13-year wait for silverware.

It came less than a week after Jose Mourinho’s surprise sacking, the Super League fiasco and supporter protests, so interim boss Ryan Mason could certainly do with another league victory today.

Spurs remain eight points behind the top four, so Champions League qualification seems a less than likely outcome in these final few games but they can put the pressure on West Ham and Liverpool for that fifth-place spot with a win over the Blades.

Mason will have to make some alterations from the starting XI that tasted defeat last Sunday and with Football FanCast already suggesting the inclusion of Tanguy Ndombele this weekend, one player needs to make way to accompany him.

The 29-year-old former midfielder must now do the reverse and axe Harry Winks for the Frenchman.

Winks had become a forgotten man under Mourinho, featuring in just six league games under him since November but Mason trusted him to start – and play the full 90 – against the rampant league leaders.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-managerial-update-transfer-rumours-levy-mourinho-sacked-gossip” title= “Read the latest Spurs manager updates, transfer news, gossip and more!”]

The intention to start him did have logic, as Spurs really needed to keep hold of possession against Pep Guardiola’s attacking riches but ultimately, it failed to pay dividends as it results in the north London outfit managing just one shot on target all game, whilst City enjoyed 62% possession.

It may have only been 1-0 but it was a rout for City.

Winks was sub-par in the middle, failing to register a key chance created, managing just one tackle and he lost 60% of his battles. It’s no wonder he couldn’t get in the side under the ‘Special One.’

Once dubbed a “perfect midfield player” and compared to the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta by Mauricio Pochettino, the Englishman is now at a career crossroad and has even been linked with a summer departure.

Currently, the £26m-rated midfielder – who earns a reported £75k-per-week – ranks as Spurs’ worst-performing player (of those that have started five or more games), with an average WhoScored rating of 6.35.

The alternatives, namely Giovani Lo Celso (6.55) and Ndombele (6.93) evidently offer up more consistency than Winks and furthermore, the former Lyon star has the ability to drive Mason’s squad forward from midfield.

He is averaging a squad-high 2.4 dribbles per game, in comparison to Winks’ squad-low 0.1 dribbles per match, via WhoScored.

Axing Winks for Ndombele seems like a no-brainer ahead of kick-off, especially after the 24-year-old’s masterclass against the Blades last time out.

If Mason wants to get Spurs back on track, then he must show no mercy and drop the Englishman from his starting XI tonight. He’s just no longer good enough for the Lilywhites.

AND in other news, the next Spurs boss may already have perfect Skipp partner in 19 y/o gem dubbed “a coach’s dream”…
