Marizanne Kapp: 'I try to keep it simple. If I stick to what I do best, usually it works out'

“It’s a little difficult being an allrounder because it seems when the batting picks up, you lose a bit of the bowling, and vice versa”

Vishal Dikshit17-Mar-2024Firstly, how does it feel to have taken so many wickets after your recent injuries and poor health?
It’s obviously good to up my team into the finals. It’s always nice contributing and taking wickets with the new ball. I feel like it’s so important in the T20 format, especially in these leagues, because the top order is so heavy with internationals, especially, and big hits. So I feel like something that’s needed in T20 cricket is wickets, early wickets.Earlier in the tournament you had said your advice to youngsters in the Delhi Capitals squad is ‘work as hard as you can when you are young because when you’re older it’s about being fresh on game days’. Now that you are 34 and there’s cricket happening around the year, how have you had to change your fitness and routines?
For me, it’s actually been downscaling, because I used to train so hard and especially worked so hard on my skills that when there was game day, I was just too tired to actually play. It took a lot of mental work because I’m someone that needs to bowl a certain amount of balls and need to spend a certain amount of time in the nets [batting], otherwise I don’t feel confident. It was more a mindset change knowing that I’ve put in the work even though it’s not as much as it used to be when I was younger because, like I said, now it’s more important for me to be fresh knowing I’ve done that work, not only now but for the last 15 years. You got a lot of swing in the last league game against Gujarat Giants and even Ellyse Perry picked up 6 for 15 with her seam movement. Has it surprised you that pace bowlers have found so much purchase from the pitches in Delhi?
Yes and no. I feel every single wicket we’ve played on has been so different. Even today, I still don’t know if it’s better when you win the toss you bowl first or bat first because the wickets have really been so different. The last game, there was probably a little bit more bounce and movement, yes, but I still felt like it was slow. And the other day, it was extremely flat and nothing in it for pace bowlers or even spinners. You don’t know what to expect.Marizanne Kapp was at her absolute best with the bat in the ODIs in Australia earlier this year•Getty ImagesYou have been particularly effective in the powerplays. How do you prepare for that phase when you know some of the best and hard-hitting batters are going to go after you?
I’ve found if I just stick to what I do best I usually end up with the wickets or being quite economical. There were some games where I went for a bit of runs when I changed what I do well. When I thought they would maybe try and lap or they were going to run at me or step across the line and I try something different, that’s usually when I go for runs. But if they do those things and I stick to what I do best, usually it works out. So I just try and keep it simple, hit my hard back of a length, bowl line and length, and try and bowl as many dot balls as possible. You said after your spell of 3 for 5 against UP Warriorz that you weren’t too happy about your bowling in the last couple of months and you went back and worked on it. Can you tell us what exactly you were unhappy with and what you did to rectify it?
I feel like it’s again a little difficult being an allrounder because it seems when the batting picks up, you lose a bit of the bowling, and vice versa. So I felt like I was probably just leaning back a little bit in the crease while I was bowling the last couple of months and I started slinging a bit more and bowling from lower down. I just went back and looked at some footage of me in the past and tried to be a bit more upright from the crease and the momentum going forward. For me, my biggest weapon is trying to land the ball on the seam and usually when I’m at my best, if I do that, the ball either nips in or out. What are some of the frequently asked questions by the younger Indian players in the Capitals camp?
They sometimes ask if they should have bowled this ball or should have had this field and, usually, I would just tell them what I think. Or I would tell them to first stick to bowling their line and length for as long as possible before they go to their death bowling or, on a wicket where it’s a bit slower and there’s a bigger boundary, bowling it into the wicket rather than going full and straight at the stumps. It’s more little things but in general the girls are quite good with their plans and what they want to do out in the middle. You have been batting higher up for both South Africa and Capitals in recent times. What aspects of batting did you have to keep in mind after this change?
When I started my career, I batted higher up for South Africa in any case. So that’s something that comes to me a little bit easier. In the last couple of years, I’ve just tried to work on finishing games or being there at the back end. So I don’t think it changes too much whether you’re batting a bit higher up or lower down.

“I feel in T20 cricket you sometimes get away with bad technique or bad bowling, whereas in ODI cricket you have to be good at your skills for so much longer”Marizanne Kapp

You said recently your favourite format is still ODI cricket but there’s a T20 World Cup coming up. How is your body shaping up and how much are you looking forward to it?
I still enjoy T20 cricket as well. It’s just that I feel ODI cricket brings out the skills and I feel in T20 cricket you sometimes get away with bad technique or bad bowling, whereas in ODI cricket you have to be good at your skills for so much longer. I still enjoy T20 cricket and I’m looking forward to the World Cup. I feel like my bowling is coming back and the last couple of months the batting has been good as well. So I’m looking forward to the World Cup and hopefully I can contribute a lot more there for South Africa.Since the start of 2023, your T20 batting strike rate is about 120, which is well above your career strike rate [99.24]. Did you consciously change that to keep up with the pace of the game or did it just happen?
If you look at my stats and where I’ve probably batted, when I played most of those matches… me, personally, I don’t look too much into those stats because if you look at the amount of T20s I’ve played for South Africa in the last five years, it’s actually not been a lot. Most of my games have been prior to that and that’s probably when I wasn’t batting as well and batting a lot lower down and not feeling confident about my batting. If you look at the leagues and South Africa the last two years, I feel like my strike rate is even higher than 120. I feel it’s me as a player being a little bit older now, playing more in these leagues and understanding what is needed. I feel like I’ve always had the shots and the power, it’s just believing in my skill a little bit more. We’ve seen your wife Dane van Niekerk wearing the Capitals jersey in the stands. How much does it help to have a fellow cricketer as a partner who understands and knows what it’s like to have a good or bad day on the field?
It helps a lot. I’ve said it previously, especially when it comes to her being a [former South Africa] captain as well. What fields I would want or a lot of times I’ll ask her, ‘what field do you think I need for this batter or if they do this, what do I do then, where do I look to score?’ Yeah, that really helps a lot because obviously Dane has a massive knowledge about cricket and she understands the game so well. Again, in saying that, sometimes as well when I enter the room, I just don’t want to speak about cricket. So every now and then I have to tell her, ‘okay, enough today’.”Dane has a massive knowledge about cricket and she understands the game so well”•Ben Hoskins/ECB/Getty ImagesIt must be tough to see her sitting out when you play international cricket?
Yeah, it’s such a waste of such a talented cricketer, to be sitting on the sidelines. But she’s been working hard and hopefully we’ll see her come back. I feel like she’s too young and too talented to not play international cricket and to not play in these leagues. She has so much knowledge and so much to give back to the game. We’ve heard about the South Africa coaching staff changing. Can you tell us what about the current environment, what has helped you thrive?
For me personally, it’s just the amount of years I’ve spent in international cricket and the leagues I’ve played in. For me, it’s more about the confidence I have in my own skill, what I want to do and obviously I love representing my country and doing well and helping them win. So that has always been my main goal and my main focus.Does the exposure to a different style of coaching change the way you’ve played and how?
Yes, definitely. I think if you not only look at the South African coaching set-up but you get different coaches in all these leagues and everyone gives their input and you see how they do things… as a player, there’s a fine line [when it comes to] allowing people to just change things in your game, but I feel like there’s definitely value in working with different coaches and seeing how they do things. I always say that you have to use the leagues and coaches as you use what you think will work for you; and things that you feel is not going to work, or won’t make an impact, you just push to one side, because I feel like as an international cricketer and especially in the women’s game, there’s a lot of info coming in and you can’t always take everything on board. So you have to be very careful with who and what you listen to and what you try and implement in your own game.

Yankees' Aaron Boone Provides Encouraging Aaron Judge Update Amid IL Stint

Aaron Judge could return to the New York Yankees' lineup as early as Tuesday vs. the Texas Rangers, manager Aaron Boone shared with reporters on Monday. Nothing is set in stone, though, as Boone wants to speak with Judge once he arrives in Texas.

Judge last played on July 25 and was then placed on the 10-day injured list due to a flexor strain in his right elbow. Tuesday will mark the end of Judge's stint on the 10-day IL, so it's the earliest he can return to the lineup as the Yankees' designated hitter.

"I don't want to say definitely because I haven't seen him yet, but I think that's the plan," Boone said, via the Associated Press. "I think he's expected in here tonight, and we'll make that call."

In preparation, Judge has been hitting balls of of minor league pitchers for the past two days. He would return as the team's DH if he plays in Texas, otherwise he could return to the outfield once the Rangers series is over. Judge hasn't begun playing catch since his IL stint.

"I'm hoping that Judge's clean and is playing catch either [Tuesday] or the next day and we'll start to get an idea about a timeline for that and then we'll see when we get back home what happens there," Boone said.

Judge would replace Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup as the DH. Stanton hit a home run and tallied 2 RBIs on Monday night in Texas.

The Yankees could be getting Judge back at the perfect time, as they've hit a slump. New York was just swept by the Miami Marlins for the first time ever over the weekend.

Perhaps the performance of the week, at least from a Premier League perspective, came from Arsenal’s Noni Madueke, however, with the Englishman’s first of the night against Club Brugge an early contender for goal of the competition.

Elsewhere, Madueke’s ever-reliable teammate, David Raya, also surges up our list, having kept yet another clean sheet away at Brugge – his fifth in just six outings in this year’s edition.

It also proved to be another positive outing for Bayer Leverkusen’s talisman, Alejandro Grimaldo, with the in-form left-footer denying Newcastle all three points late on in the BayArena.

The top 20 sees Anthony Gordon retain his place, having now scored five times himself this season, while Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez also deserves his own surge up this list after netting the opener against PSV Eindhoven.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s shock defeat away to Atalanta sees Enzo Fernandez drop out of the top ten, with the Serie A side coming from behind to win 2-1 in Bergamo.

So, who is included in the top ten after match week five?

10

Pedri

Taking Enzo’s place in this top ten is Barcelona genius, Pedri, with the Spaniard again putting on a midfield clinic in the 2-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt.

108 touches. 100% of his dribbles successfully completed. 100% of his tackles won. Need we say more?

9

Jurrien Timber

Heralded by some as the best right-back in the world after helping Arsenal beat Bayern at the end of November, Timber has showcased himself to be a phenomenal signing by the Gunners.

The Dutchman may have missed the clash with Brugge, but it would be harsh to dislodge him from his place in this top ten.

8

Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen has stormed into the top ten following his stunning hat-trick away at Ajax in match week four.

He didn’t play in game week five, and failed to fire this time around against Monaco, but still sits second in the scoring charts, now up to six goals from just four appearances in 2025/26.

7

Marcus Rashford

There can be a perceived lack of interest or importance placed on these league phase fixtures, although Marcus Rashford has already served up reasons to be entertained, notably lashing home that stunner at St James’ Park, while producing an early contender for assist of the season after picking out Ferran Torres against PSG.

With two more goals under his belt against Olympiacos, having also picked out Jules Kounde in stunning fashion in midweek, the 27-year-old is finally looking back to his brilliant best.

6

Michael Olise

Bayern Munich must be rubbing their hands with glee at having prised Michael Olise from Crystal Palace for ‘just’ £50m, with the France international going to new heights at the Allianz Arena.

With four goals and assists already in this year’s competition, the fleet-footed winger is already looking deadly again.

5

Declan Rice

Last season, Rice powered Arsenal to the Champions League semi-finals courtesy of two remarkable free-kicks against Real Madrid, deserving of the Puskas award. If you didn’t think he couldn’t get any better, think again.

He may have sat out Brugge through illness, although he memorably rocked up against Bayern Munich in match week five to deliver a virtuoso man-of-the-match display.

Is there a better midfielder in world football? Perhaps there’s one.

4

Vitinha

From struggling against Chorley in the FA Cup for Wolves, the Portuguese midfielder has come a long way since. He’s a Champions League winner and arguably delivered his finest performance in the competition to date against Tottenham in match week five, scoring a stunning hat-trick which included a cracking equaliser in the first half.

Thomas Frank remarked after the game that he is “the next Ballon d’Or winner”. Any complaints? Very few.

3

Harry Kane

The fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for one club, the England skipper is in the form of his life right now, notching up five goals already to kickstart his – and Bayern’s – bid for an elusive Champions League crown.

He was the finest player in the competition to date until he came up against Arsenal in match week five, having also failed to fire against Sporting in Bayern’s comeback 3-1 win.

2

Erling Haaland

Excluding the obvious duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the modern era hasn’t witnessed such a prolific presence as Erling Haaland, with the Norwegian already ripping it up in the new campaign.

A star for club and country, the 25-year-old arguably only ranks behind a certain Harry Kane as the continent’s finest number nine, scoring for the sixth time in the Champions League this season against Madrid.

1

Kylian Mbappe

Having somewhat upset the apple cart after joining then-holders Real Madrid last summer, Kylian Mbappe is back in the groove again under Xabi Alonso.

He may have missed the Man City clash through injury, but with nine goals in just five games, there’s no one better for the top spot.

Yamal this, Yamal that. The Frenchman is the greatest in the world right now.

The original Estevao: Chelsea lead race to sign "best player in the world"

Things are looking up for Chelsea.

Despite a couple of poor results earlier in the season, Enzo Maresca’s side are second in the Premier League, with a chance to cut Arsenal’s lead to just three points on Sunday.

Then on Tuesday night, they showed the continent just how dangerous they are by beating Spanish champions Barcelona 3-0.

One of the stars of that game, and of Chelsea’s season, was Estevao, and so fans should be excited about reports linking them to someone who could be seen as the original version of the wonderkid.

Chelsea target the original Estevao

The transfer window is still over a month away from opening, but that has not stopped Chelsea from being linked with a host of potentially game-changing signings.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, Nottingham Forest’s man-mountain Murillo has been touted for a £79m move to Stamford Bridge, as has Athletic Bilbao’s £62m Nico Williams.

However, as talented as those two are, neither one can accurately be described as the original Estevao, unlike Vinícius Júnior.

Yes, according to a recent report from Football Insider, Chelsea are one of a couple of teams interested in signing the Real Madrid superstar.

In fact, the report goes further, revealing that should the Brazilian be up for sale in the summer, the Blues will be one of the frontrunners for his signature, alongside Manchester City.

However, the report has confirmed that, even though he’d have just a year left on his deal, Los Blancos would demand a fee of around £80m.

Even so, Vini Jr is a genuinely world-class player and someone Chelsea should be happy to break the bank on, especially as he’s the original Estevao.

Why Vini Jr is the original Estevao

Now, when it comes to the similarities between Vini Jr and Estevao, there are a few that are quite obvious and somewhat surface-level.

For example, they’re both exciting wide players, they’re both Brazilian, and now they’ve both played for the national team.

However, what makes the Madrid star the original version of the Chelsea star is how they were both spoken about prior to their big-money moves to Europe.

The Blues ace, for example, was labelled a “future Ballon d’Or winner” by respected analyst Ben Mattinson a few months before his deal was agreed.

Likewise, when the 25-year-old arrived in Spain over seven years ago, president Florentino Perez said: “He’s a player who is already considered one of the great hopes of Brazilian and world football.

In short, the West Londoners’ new prospect looks to be following in the footsteps of the former Flamengo ace, and they’ll certainly hope he continues.

After all, despite having a slow start to life in the Spanish capital, the São Gonçalo-born monster has now amassed 340 appearances for the biggest club in the world, during which he has scored 111 goals and provided 89 assists.

Moreover, he’s helped the club win everything there is to win in the game, including two Champions Leagues, three La Ligas and one Copa del Rey.

Finally, he also has some sensational underlying numbers to his name, with FBref ranking him in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons, the top 6% for shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, with all that in mind, it’s hard to disagree with Ronaldo’s assertion that Vini Jr is “the best player in the world,” and therefore, Chelsea should be doing all they can to sign him next year, especially as he could help Estevao’s development.

Chelsea have already signed another exciting star who's "just like Estevao"

Chelsea have already signed another youngster who could become another Estevao for Enzo Maresca.

Top Five MLB Free Agents Still Available As Teams Report to Spring Training

The MLB offseason is in its final stages as pitchers and catchers report for spring training this week.

There have been plenty of big signings throughout the winter, including the mega-deal Juan Soto inked to swap allegiances from the New York Yankees to the New York Mets, and the plethora of top-tier free agents that agreed to join the superteam that is the Los Angeles Dodgers on deferred contracts.

Despite the abundance of offseason movement, there are still some notable free agents who remain unsigned. Whether they're hoping to see a more lucrative offer come through or they're working to identify the best opportunity, plenty of quality players remain available on the open market.

The first spring training games get underway Feb. 20, so time is running out for those unsigned free agents if they want to spend the full spring with a team to get back into the swing of things. As the end of the offseason approaches and teams report to camps in Arizona and Florida, here's a look at the top five remaining free agents.

Alex Bregman, 3B

Bregman was selected by Houston with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft. / Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

The former Houston Astros third baseman has been linked with several teams as the 2025 season nears. ESPN's Buster Olney reported Tuesday that Bregman is likely to sign with either the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs or Detroit Tigers–-three teams expected to vie for a playoff berth this year.

The 30-year-old is coming off the first Gold Glove season of his career at the hot corner and hasn't recorded a sub-4.0 bWAR season since 2021 when he was limited to 91 games. Bregman provides a consistent bat, having hit at least 19 home runs in every season that he's played at least 140 games.

Nick Pivetta, SP

Pivetta logged a 4.14 ERA and 10.6 K/9 in 26 starts for the Red Sox last season. / David Butler II-Imagn Images

Pivetta spent the last four-plus seasons in Boston, where he proved to be a durable innings eater susceptible to surrendering the long ball. Pivetta pitched at least 142 2/3 innings in each of the last four seasons while logging a 4.33 ERA over that span, though it’s worth pointing out Fenway Park is a hitter-friendly environment.

The market for Pivetta seemingly stalled as the offseason dragged on, though he's still arguably the top remaining starting pitcher available. The Red Sox' decision to give Pivetta a qualifying offer may have hampered his ability to find a new home in free agency, given Boston would be owed some draft compensation if he is signed by another team.

Andrew Heaney, SP

Heaney spent the last two seasons with the Rangers, posting a 4.22 ERA in 66 appearances (59 starts). / Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

Heaney has bounced around the big leagues since 2021, playing for four different teams over the last four seasons, and he's looking to join a fifth in free agency. He's coming off a solid season with the Texas Rangers, registering a 4.28 ERA and 4.04 FIP in a career-high 31 starts.

The best left-handed pitcher remaining on the market, Heaney could be a quality middle-of-the-rotation starter.

J.D. Martinez, DH

Martinez has collected six All-Star appearances and three Silver Slugger awards over his 14 big league seasons. / John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images

Age seemingly began to catch up to Martinez in 2024. The slugger appeared in 120 games for the Mets and recorded 16 home runs, a .725 OPS and a 106 OPS+, all of which were his lowest or tied for his lowest in a single season since 2013 (excluding the shortened campaign in 2020).

Martinez will turn 38 in August, making a one-year deal the most likely outcome for him. With 331 career home runs and 14 seasons of MLB experience, Martinez could be a valuable veteran presence for a team looking to add some depth and a quality hitter to the mix.

Alex Verdugo, OF

Verdugo has played for the Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees over his eight-year MLB career. / Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

The former New York Yankees outfielder hasn't received much attention during his first trip to free agency. Verdugo had the worst statistical season of his career in 2024, recording an 83 OPS+, .647 OPS and 0.8 bWAR. He struggled massively in the second half of the season, logging a .606 OPS in his final 53 games.

It wasn't the season he was hoping for before hitting the open market, and the general lack of interest in him reflects that. Still, he's only one season removed from the 2023 campaign during which he recorded a serviceable 2.6 bWAR and .745 OPS.

ICC T20I rankings: Mandhana No. 3 among batters, Bell fourth in bowling charts

Mandhana: The girls were really hard on me about the century

Smriti Mandhana, ranked No. 1 among batters in the ICC ODI rankings for women, has gone past Tahlia McGrath to move to No. 3 on the T20I table after her match-winning 62-ball 112 against England in the first match of the series. The other big mover after the match was Lauren Bell, the England quick who returned 3 for 27. She moved up to No. 4, pushing team-mate Sophie Ecclestone and India’s Renuka Thakur down.Mandhana’s 112, her first T20I century in what was her 149th appearance in the format, also gave her the best rating of her career – 771 points. No. 2 Hayley Matthews is just three rating points in front, and well within Mandhana’s reach when England India play their second T20I on Tuesday, but table-topper Beth Mooney is quite a distance away, with 794 points.Full rankings tables

Shafali Verma, who returned to India’s T20I XI and partnered Mandhana at the top in the first game after last having played a T20I in October 2024 after which she was dropped, also moved up a spot to No. 13 after scoring 20 in 22 balls and looking fairly rusty.Harleen Deol also re-entered the rankings at joint-86th after she scored 43 in 23 balls. Deol had last played a T20I in July 2023 and had dropped out of the rankings.Bell’s rise in the bowlers’ rankings has created something of a traffic jam at the top of the table. Pakistan’s Sadia Iqbal is the No. 1 with 746 rating points, but Bell – with Australia’s Annabel Sutherland (736 points) and India’s Deepti Sharma (735) above her – is just 19 points behind. In fact, Deepti, Bell and Ecclestone (725) are all a good performance or two away from getting to the top of the table.

"Completely in tears" – Slot makes worrying comparison as Liverpool star faces lengthy injury

After what was far from a convincing display against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, Liverpool boss Arne Slot made a worrying comparison when speaking about an injury to one of his stars.

"Far from happy" – Slot slams Liverpool performance

Even with a much-changed side, Slot would have been expecting Liverpool to sweep past Championship side Southampton with relative ease. And it looked as though that would be the case when record signing Alexander Isak scored his first goal for the club.

The Swede, after missing an earlier chance, made no mistake and raced off to celebrate in vintage fashion for the first time in front of the Anfield crowd.

After going off at the break in a planned substitution, Isak may be thrown straight into the side against Crystal Palace this weekend in place of the suspended Hugo Ekitike.

The Frenchman was once again clinical in front of goal, but not so wise in his celebration – taking his shirt off and receiving a second yellow card as a result. Now out of the Palace game, Slot slammed the moment as “stupid” and needless”.

That said, it’s not just Ekitike that the Dutchman was unhappy with last night. The Liverpool boss told reporters: “Great ball by Robbo (Andy Robertson), by the way, who also has won so much at this club and also understands how to play this game, not underestimate it – just always be ready to play.

“And that’s also the way to get yourself either back in the team or get yourself as much playing minutes as you want. That’s why I was happy with a few individual performances, but far from happy from a few other individual performances.”

It was also a night to forget for one of Liverpool’s other new boys, who was stretchered off on his debut amid concerns about what would be the ultimate injury blow.

Slot makes worrying Leoni comparison

Some are instantly fearing the worst for 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni. The defender was enjoying an excellent debut before injury struck in the 81st minute. In what appears to be a knee injury, Liverpool are now awaiting the results of a scan to find out the extent of the injury, but Slot has already made a worrying comparison.

A repeat of Van Bommel’s injury would be the worst-case scenario for Leoni. The PSV star suffered a season-ending knee injury last weekend and such a blow at this stage of Leoni’s Liverpool career is the last thing that the young defender needs.

Described as “dominant” by analyst Ben Mattinson after he completed his summer switch to Anfield, Liverpool fans will be desperate to see more of their new teenage star.
