We were under pressure – Hafeez

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Sep-2014Mohammad Hafeez, the Lahore Lions captain, said his team was under pressure in a must-win game against Southern Express in Raipur before his half-century lifted them to a match-winning total that eventually secured their passage into the main draw of the Champions League T20.Lions were 52 for 3 in the eighth over but Hafeez’s 67 off 40 balls took them to 164 for 6, after which their bowlers secured a 55-run win. “I think the victory was much needed. To be honest you all knew how important it was,” Hafeez said after the game. “We wanted to set a good total early. After losing three wickets, we were bit under pressure because we wanted to set a target and put pressure on the chasing side.”Hafeez had a 75-run stand with Saad Nasim for the fourth wicket, a partnership that was the bedrock of the innings. Nasim, a 24-year old batsman, contributed 31 off 25 balls and credited his captain for guidance during his innings.”The idea was to take singles and extend the innings and lay a platform. We wanted to consolidate our position and then try and take on the bowling,” Nasim told clt20.com. “He [Hafeez] played a brilliant knock. And at the same time he kept telling me what to do and talked me through the innings. I have learnt a lot of things from him – like handling pressure, batting in different situations and many other such things.”When asked about his role in the Lions side, Nasim said: “Basically, I am a middle-order batsman and bat at No. 5 or 6. I was told to play my normal game in difficult times and handle the situation accordingly. Performing here can give me an opportunity to play for the national side. The whole world is watching, which makes it a big thing.”Lions finished second in the qualifying group, behind Northern Knights and ahead of Mumbai Indians and Southern Express. They are now in Group A of the Champions League, along with Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Dolphins and Perth Scorchers. Lions’ first game is against Knight Riders on September 21 in Hyderabad.

Rankin beats homecoming nerves

Boyd Rankin did well to conquer the nerves inherent in playing against his native country and return England’s best bowling figures on debut for eight years, according to his coach, Ashley Giles

Andrew McGlashan04-Sep-2013
When Boyd Rankin’s second ball of his England one-day debut – against an Ireland side who he had represented 37 times at the same level – disappeared so far down the leg side that Jos Buttler couldn’t gather it there was a fear the occasion may get the better of him. That he ended with a career-best 4 for 46 provided Rankin with a major tick in Ashley Giles’ coach’s notebook at the beginning of a period where the depth of England’s next generation will be assessed.Rankin, who has spent much of his county career under Giles at Warwickshire, overcame his early waywardness in Malahide with the scalps of Paul Stirling and Ed Joyce, then later in the innings he removed William Porterfield and Jonny Mooney to earn him the best figures of a bowler on England debut since Chris Tremlett’s 4 for 32 against Bangladesh in 2005.He formed a tall opening attack with Steven Finn which is likely to be the combination used for most of the series against Australia with England having rested James Anderson and Stuart Broad alongside the injury-enforced absence of Tim Bresnan. His chances of breaking into England’s Ashes party for the Test series in Australia this winter are already being talked up.Giles told ESPNcricinfo that the nerves had been evident. “All credit to him. He was probably more nervous yesterday than if he’d been playing against Australia,” he said, “with him going home and all the talk around the Irish players playing for England. His first couple of overs were a bit nervous but he settled very quickly. To finish with four: what a great debut. He’ll take that confidence into the next match.”Boyd Rankin dismisses William Porterfield on his way to the best debut figures by an England bowler for eight years•Getty Images

Rankin and Finn were the only two frontline quicks selected against Ireland – Jamie Overton and Chris Jordan were overlooked – and for large chunks of the bowling performance England did feel a specialist bowler light, especially when Eoin Morgan turned to Michael Carberry’s basic offspin. Giles, however, was impressed by the role of Ben Stokes who bowled for the first time in ODIs, ending with none for 51 in his 10 overs.”Ben was our third seamer and his bowling has really developed over the last 12 months, and I thought he bowled pretty well yesterday. We have an inexperienced attack for these one-dayers and it’s going to be a steep learning curve. In terms of the balance it was great to look down and see Stokes at No. 8, and at one point it looked as though we might need it. I think we are lucky in his case as he’s a genuine allrounder and can fill two spots.”Giles was alluding to England’s top order collapse as they slipped to 48 for 4 chasing 270 before being rescued by a world-record fifth wicket stand 220 between Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara. Although Giles would have preferred not to see the team in such a tricky position he believes they could yet feel the benefit of it further down the line.”It was a very useful exercise. Obviously there are areas we can work on. Ireland setting us a challenging target was, in hindsight, good for the side because it put them under pressure. It was a bit closer than we’d have liked to be at one stage but overall for us to firstly see some of those guys in an international environment, and then for Morgan and Bopara to get us home was extremely worthwhile.”The side that faced Ireland resembled more a Lions team that a full England one-day side and although three players – Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root and Jonathan Trott – return to face Australia the bowling will retain a callow feel for the five-match series.Giles has not been able to able to pick a full strength team during his time as one-day coach (Pietersen was injured for the Champions Trophy) but acknowledges the need for rotation and also sees the benefit of judging different players under the pressure of one-day cricket.”Myself and Andy Flower, in our conversations, have always accepted that this would have to happen to manage the player workloads. We want to keep their services for the long-term. In the Champions Trophy we had our No 1 side out, barring Kevin Pietersen and that’s our aim: to have our best sides available for the key tournaments.”Between times we are going to have to rest and rotate. It does give us a chance to look at some of the young talent coming through, particularly with an eye on 2015 World Cup. We could say our best team – the one that played the Champions Trophy plus Kevin Pietersen – could get us to the World Cup. It might be, but it might not be and some of youngsters might be needed.”And he insists the split coaching roles which have been in place since January are dovetailing effectively. “It’s going pretty smoothly. Myself and Andy have a good relationship. I feel, and I hope Andy feels the same, that we can talk about where we are and what we want. I’m looking at the one-day squad then have to take into account what Andy wants for the Test team. We certainly haven’t had any fallings out.”As part of NatWest’s “Big Cricket Ticket Giveaway” cricket fans still have the chance to win tickets to the remaining NatWest Series matches this summer. Lancs go top with Kerrigan's seven

Simon Kerrigan took seven wickets as Lancashire claimed a big victory in the race for promotion with an eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Lancashire replace their hosts at the top of the table.Kerrigan returned magnificent figures of 7 for 63 as Northants were bowledout for 241 with James Middlebrook top-scoring with 75 off 171 balls, givingLancashire a target of 110. The visitors wrapped up the win thanks to Andrea Agathangelou’s unbeaten 57 off75 deliveries to move a point clear of their opponents with a game in hand.Northants began the day on 123 for 4, requiring nine runs to make theiropponents bat again, with Middlebrook resuming on 46 and Andrew Hall on 3. Middlebrook was to comfortably complete his second half-century of the matchoff 113 balls as the fifth-wicket pair survived the first hour of the daywithout any alarm.Former South Africa allrounder Hall went through 10,000 first-class runs inthe process but Middlebrook went cheaply by needlessly launching Kerrigan toKyle Hogg at deep square leg.Kerrigan completed his third five-wicket haul of the season and his ninth infirst-class cricket when Agathangelou took a sharp one-handed catch at short legto dismiss Matthew Spriegel. He then claimed his third wicket in four balls whenDavid Willey was also taken by Agathangelou at short leg to depart for a goldenduck.Kerrigan took his tally up to seven by trapping Northants wicketkeeper DavidMurphy lbw, meaning four wickets had fallen for 12 runs. But Hall, who needed the aid of a runner after a muscle strain, reached 50 off 127 deliveries in the afternoon.Lee Daggett plundered 11 before he was bowled by Lancashire captain GlenChapple and Hall was the last to fall on 57 when he was superbly caught andbowled one-handed by the same man.Chasing 110, Lancashire lost Karl Brown in the second over when he edged thefirst ball he faced to Middlebrook at first slip off Muhammad Azharullah. Middlebrook then pinned South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince lbw asLancashire reached tea on 30 for 2 – still requiring another 80 runs. But any doubts the visitors may have had were eased by Agathangelou racing past50 off just 61 deliveries with opener Luis Reece contributing 40 not out. The winning run came through Agathangelou running a single off Daggett asLancashire took a big step towards a return to Division One.

Lease helps Gloucs to record profit

Gloucestershire have had their financial belts tightened to the point of suffocation in recent years but a sign of more breathing space was delivered in financial results for 2012.The playing budget was squeezed to the extent that the coach, John Bracewell, was contemplating the prospect of having to use amateurs last season but such worries were allayed with the granting of planning permission for the development of Bristol. The renovation has skewed the finances dramatically, with a record surplus of £2.9 million being almost entirely down to by a £2.8 million lease of the Ashley Down End of the ground to a property developer. But take away that significant income and the club’s financial performance was still very good. A trading surplus of £108,000 was the best result since 2007. That was despite the poor weather, which reduced gate receipts by £57,000 and membership by £30,000, although they were aided by a one-off £200,000 grant from the ECB.Gloucestershire are now looking forward to a new pavilion being completed in July – immediately increasing its allure as a conferencing centre – and the whole development being finished in time to host England against India in an ODI in 2014.The purse strings have already been loosened, with the signing of Australians Michael Klinger and Dan Christian for this season. Last year, only bit-part deals for Kane Williamson and Rob Nicol were possible in conjunction with New Zealand Cricket. Muttiah Muralitharan also played the second year of his T20 deal.”This has been an exceptional year for the club, with the start of our long-awaited development and the financial impact this has had,” outgoing chairman, Rex Body, said. “Stripping out the surplus on the lease it was our best performance since 2007 despite the effect of the dreadful weather.”But there is still more to do. We are committed to substantial continued development spend as well as increased playing squad expenditure so we will continue to exercise financial prudence. Nevertheless, these results augur well for the future.”

Redbacks blow final berth

South Australia completed a spectacular blow-out in the finishing straight of the domestic limited overs competition, losing by 18 runs to New South Wales

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Feb-2013
ScorecardSouth Australia completed a spectacular blow-out in the finishing straight of the domestic limited overs competition, losing by 18 runs against New South Wales at Adelaide Oval to drop out of the tournament after leading its standings with three matches to go.Christian reprimanded

Dan Christian, the Redbacks allrounder, was handed a reprimand for a breach of Cricket Australia’s code of behaviour during the match. Christian pleaded guilty to the charge of “using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or making an obscene gesture” for an incident in the 39th over of the New South Wales innings. Earlier this summer Christian was suspended by SA for repeatedly causing damage to the change rooms upon being dismissed, but that prior did not count against him in this case.

The Blues were out of contention for the final the moment SA ensured a bonus point could not be won, but the hosts’ third consecutive defeat was galling given they had only required one win from three matches to secure a place in the final against Victoria. The Bushrangers now await the identity of their opponent, which will be either Queensland or Western Australia, who face Tasmania in the final qualifying match.Brad Haddin was primarily responsible for the NSW win, cracking a crisp century speckled with 17 boundaries and a pair of sixes in a memorable counter-attack after his side had slipped to 4 for 77 in the face of accurate early SA bowling.Peter Nevill provided support, while Sean Abbott put the finishing touches on the innings with a busy contribution in the closing overs.SA promoted Dan Christian in an effort to make a rapid start, but he made only 12 before falling to Doug Bollinger, and while Michael Klinger built the total steadily in the company of the debutant Alex Carey, the Redbacks’ little-tested middle order always looked vulnerable. They were to prove exactly that, the tally sliding from 1 for 87 to 6 for 139 as Abbott and Bollinger gained reverse swing with the old ball. Johan Botha and Tim Ludeman pushed SA back into a position from which victory was possible, but the earlier losses meant only one wicket was needed for the Blues to crash through.Abbott claimed it when Botha sliced to the man posted on the point boundary, and Gurinder Sandhu cleaned up the tail with some skill to complete SA’s slide out of contention.

Mountaineers demolished for 26 in Masvingo

ScorecardTawanda Mupariwa and Tinashe Panyangara needed 15.3 overs to demolish Mountaineers for 26 in their chase of 64 on day three in Masvingo. Southern Rocks ended up winning by the comfortable margin of 37 runs after having themselves been blown away for 58 in their second innings by Shingirai Masakadza and Tendai Chatara. Masakadza had picked up four wickets in the first innings as well after Mountaineers chose to field, as Rocks managed 164 with the help of Trevor Garwe’s unbeaten 41. Mountaineers replied with 159, Mark Pettini making 40 and Mupariwa taking 4 for 30. Rocks imploded in 30.4 overs in the second innings, with just three batsmen making double-digit scores. Masakadza and Chatara picked up eight wickets between them. Mountaineers needed 64, but five of their batsmen registered ducks, and the highest score was 7. Mupariwa took his best figures of 6 for 17 while Panyangara had 4 for 4.
