Worcestershire release Simon Jones

Simon Jones faces an uncertain future as he tries to recover from his latest knee injury after Worcestershire announced they would not be offering him a new contract.Jones has been ruled out for the season and was in the final year of his New Road deal, but had said he would like to remain with Worcestershire. However, the club have decided they can’t commit to such an injury-prone cricketer and it remains to be seen how many other counties are interested.”This has been a difficult decision but is in the best interests of the club going forward,” said director of cricket Steve Rhodes. “We all admire the effort that Simon has put in to regain full fitness and we know he is determined to be fit for the 2010 season.”However we are not in the position to offer him a new contract going forward so he is free to talk to any other County about his future. We want to thank Simon for his contribution to the club’s success in 2008 and we really do hope that he can win his fitness battle and resume his career.”For a period last season it appeared Jones might have turned the corner following a struggle to regain fitness since the 2005 Ashes. He claimed 42 wickets at 18.02 and was named in England’s preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy. However, his season ended prematurely with another injury and the 2009 campaign never got started.

Man City fans flock to James McAtee claim

Flocking to Twitter, a number of Manchester City fans have shared their views in response to a claim on the future of promising youngster James McAtee.

One of the major themes of optimism at City over the 2021/22 season has been the sheer amount of talent coming through, with a plethora of starlets having made their senior debuts under Pep Guardiola.

Indeed, the Spaniard handed many previously unseen youngsters their first Sky Blue cameos against Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup as he keeps one eye on City’s prospering academy. Cole Palmer is the main starlet to be turning plenty of heads since his introduction to the first team fold this season, but the future of another promising attacker in McAtee faces uncertainty.

The 19-year-old, who has drawn comparisons with club legend David Silva and scored 38 goals in 76 appearances for City’s youth teams, still hasn’t put pen to paper on a new deal which expires in 2023, so club and player may soon need to decide the next step.

Sharing the latest on City’s plans for McAtee, Wales Online reporter Ian Mitchelmore has claimed that the Sky Blues view Swansea as a place where he can develop his game on loan.

The Championship club are keen to take him in January, with City just as eager for the teenager to get more senior minutes under his belt – seemingly pulling a U-turn after opting against sending McAtee out on loan a few months ago.

However, as per this report, his precarious contract situation is a crucial factor to a potential move away and a decision may either need to be made soon or, at the latest, next summer.

Flocking to this claim, many Sky Blues supporters are sweating over McAtee’s future and want to see him tied down to a contract extension as soon as possible, with some fearing that they may lose him and that this potential loan could come as his first step out the exit door.

Everton: Ivan Perisic could join Toffees

Everton and West Ham United are among possible destinations for Ivan Perisic as he approaches the end of his Inter Milan contract, according to Fichajes.net.

The lowdown

Perisic, 32, is now into the final year of his deal at Inter. He’s been on the books of the Serie A giants for seven years, though he did spend the 2019/20 season on loan at Bayern Munich, helping them to win the Champions League.

The Croatian netted twice for his country at last summer’s European Championships, with his goal at Hampden Park on Matchday Three quashing Scotland’s hopes of progression.

He’s started eight of Inter’s nine league games up to this point, scoring twice and providing one assist (via WhoScored).

Jose Mourinho has previously marvelled at the ‘amazing’ winger and described him as ‘dominant over defenders’.

The latest

The report states that ‘several clubs are aware’ of Perisic’s situation and are ‘preparing their offers’ ahead of 2020.

He may yet renew his contract at San Siro, but if he chooses to leave, Everton and West Ham would be interested in bringing him to England.

Perisic could also return to the Bundesliga, with Wolfsburg keen on luring him back to the Volkswagen Arena.

The verdict

Another winger, Andros Townsend, arrived on a free transfer last summer and looks to be an excellent addition.

That will have given Everton encouragement – they’ll believe they can improve their squad without spending a penny on a transfer fee with Rafa Benitez showing his knack of getting the best out of limited spending.

And Perisic is, of course, a couple of levels up from the former Crystal Palace man. He’ll have turned 33 by the end of the season, but he could still offer Everton a year or two of effective service given his track record at top clubs in Europe.

Liverpool fans fume at Ousmane Dembele link

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted negatively to a rumour suggesting that the Reds could look to sign Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.

Jurgen Klopp ended up not making any attacking reinforcements in the summer transfer window, leaving many frustrated with the club’s lack of business. It means that Liverpool must continue to rely on Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota to deliver consistently, although it’s arguable that only the first two are currently doing that.

Another wide player will be needed at some point, and according to TEAMtalk [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], the Reds are eyeing up a January move for Dembele.

The Frenchman has never reached his potential at Barca, often proving to be an injury-prone figure and scoring just 30 goals in 118 appearances despite his £135.5m transfer fee.

Woosnam ponders Edouard options

Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam says he would be stunned if Patrick Vieira selected Odsonne Edouard on the flanks against Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday night, tipping the summer signing to potentially start in a front two instead.

The lowdown

Edouard has yet to start a game for the Eagles following his Deadline Day move from Celtic.

He made his first appearance as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month and scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

The Frenchman became the first player to bag a brace off the bench on their Premier League debut since Sergio Aguero in August 2011 (via Opta Joe).

But Patrick Vieira stuck with Christian Benteke up top for the visit to Liverpool the following week, turning to Edouard after 65 minutes.

Palace face rivals Brighton on Monday night as they look to climb to 12th in the early Premier League table. Edouard will be hopeful of making a full debut for his new club.

The latest

A Palace supporter suggested that Vieira might consider swapping out Jordan Ayew for Edouard, who would then line up at right wing with Wilfried Zaha on the left and Benteke through the middle.

“I’d be amazed,” Woosnam replied in The Athletic’s discussion board, “to see Edouard on the right or left for a game like this.”

If Edouard and Benteke are to play together, he thinks it will be as part of a front two.

The verdict

Brighton’s big back three seem like they would be comfortable dealing with the aerial threat posed by Benteke, but Edouard would ask altogether different questions with his movement, so there’s a strong case for him starting on Monday night.

Vieira may be exercising patience, but you can understand why many Palace fans might be clamouring for Edouard after that spectacular debut.

And, if the manager does go for broke and start both of his main goalscorers, one would have to assume Woosnam’s front two prediction is more likely than playing the big summer arrival out of his natural position.

Wahab and Azhar lead Punjab to easy win

A rousing tournament produced a damp finale as Punjab Stallions romped home in the Pentangular Cup final defeating the Federal Areas Leopards by eight wickets at the National Stadium in Karachi.Punjab had been the strongest team through the tournament, going into the final undefeated, and they lived up to their billing as favourites with solid displays in all departments. Wahab Riaz’s mid and late-innings five-for set the game up before fifties from the top three saw them overhaul the meagre 219-run target with over eight overs remaining.A later-than-normal start still didn’t stop Shoaib Malik from fielding after winning the toss, and the decision never seemed in danger of backfiring. Sarfraz Ahmed was tidy from the off, a wrong-foot action, an ambling run-up and a tight line stifling FA’s openers.Mohammad Talha was less restrictive, but his energy and pace kept both openers honest and though Babar Naeem began to open up, Raheel Majeed was soon gone. The hugely impressive Umar Amin then took over responsibility for building a defendable total on a flat pitch.Amin has stepped in to the national limelight after an impressive tournament and here was evidence why. Unfussed and compact, he kept runs ticking over, occasionally pinching a timely boundary. Runs came all around the wicket and the pace never really flagged; the task of having a total built around him clearly not much of an ask.Unfortunately others around him weren’t on the same page. Three partnerships through the middle of 46, 57 and 47 threatened but never went on. Two of those were ended by the excellent Riaz, who came on over halfway into the innings and proceeded to bowl a nuanced limited overs spell. He struck in his first over but with variations in pace and angles, he kept striking through the second half of the innings. Usman Saeed and Mohammad Salman both fished outside off and Amin himself fell leg-before to a fine yorker as he looked to accelerate: the three were the jewels of Riaz’s five-wicket crown. Talha returned impressively and together the pair ensured that FA lost their last six wickets for only 47 runs in barely eight overs.Punjab’s greater strength has been their top order and unless the mood took Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir, you felt, the target was never going to trouble them. It didn’t, as Shoaib pitched repeatedly short and Tanvir too wide, allowing Nasir Jamshed, in particular, a breezy start.Jamshed fairly sped away soon after the start – Shoaib was pulled repeatedly to the fence and once driven arrow straight down the ground in grand fashion. The slower-paced bowlers were charged, as a Gambhir or Hayden might do, and lofted around midwicket and straight.Azhar Ali provided inconspicuous support, nurdling and nudging away and as the pitch became duller than dishwater, the only way to a wicket seemed a run-out. Duly it came, a horrendous mix-up leaving Jamshed stranded for a blazing 56-ball 63. With him went the entertainment and it was left to Salman Butt to elegantly, if quietly, craft his way to a fifty and Punjab to the title.Azhar snuck up unnoticed, occasionally lifting his head above the surface with a boundary and a low-key 87 sealed the final deal. Riaz it was, however, who deservedly got the player of the final award for his game-breaking spell earlier in the day.

West Ham could move for Loftus-Cheek

Kurt Zouma may not be the only player West Ham United sign from down the river…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, the Irons could explore a move for his Chelsea teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Earlier this month, The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported that the Champions of Europe were looking to send the 25-year-old out on loan once again this season to try and get his career back on track.

He has quickly slipped down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge. He spent time on loan to relegated Fulham last season and has been capped ten times by England.

Strength in depth

Hammers boss David Moyes must actually consider a move for the 6 foot 3 colossus as he would add some much-needed depth to his threadbare engine room.

If Declan Rice or Tomas Soucek were to get injured this season, it could be disastrous as the club will be competing in the Europa League. Their back-up is the retiring Mark Noble and that’s it.

Signing a player of Loftus-Cheek’s calibre on loan, for nothing, would be a wise and shrewd call from the 58-year-old manager.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest West Ham team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

It’s easy to forget that the £16.2m-rated beast bagged ten goals and provided five assists from midfield during the 2018/19 season, playing a big part in Chelsea’s Europa League run that year.

Such experience in Europe would be another beneficial factor behind signing him. He and Rice could be a solid unit in the heart of the pitch, especially given past comments on the Englishman.

BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves once hailed Loftus-Cheek as an “unstoppable force” following a hat-trick against BATE Borisov, whilst his manager at Fulham Scott Parker described him as “unplayable” back in February this year.

The Chelsea outcast is a player capable of bringing the ball out from midfield, having averaged 1.3 dribbles and 1.2 shots per game, via WhoScored, for the struggling Cottagers last term.

Loftus-Cheek is thought to be earning only £60k-per-week in west London, so the club wouldn’t need to put a sizeable investment into a loan move. It would effectively be pretty low risk and in turn, Moyes would be getting a much-needed and vastly-experienced option in midfield.

LFC fans delighted with Henderson update

Some Liverpool supporters are delighted after journalist Fabrizio Romano shared a claim from David Ornstein on Twitter that Jordan Henderson is close to signing a new Reds contract.

Jurgen Klopp’s side picked up a solid 2-0 win at home to Burnley on Saturday afternoon, continuing their 100% start to the season in the process. Diogo Jota opened the scoring with a precise header and Sadio Mane fired home an impressive second goal after the interval, putting the game to bed.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

There were a number of standout performers for Liverpool and Henderson caught the eye in the middle of the park on his first start of the season, completing a team-high 66 passes against the Clarets and executing six accurate long balls (Sofascore).

The 31-year-old is a key figure on and off the pitch, and according to Romano on Twitter – with attribution to Ornstein – he is close to extending his stay at Anfield until 2024.

The journalist tweeted: “Jordan Henderson will soon sign his contract extension with Liverpool. He’s discussing final details and clauses with the club – then everything will be completed. All parties confident. #LFC New deal will be until June 2024, approved by Liverpool – as per @David_Ornstein”.
