Broad rested for one-day series

Stuart Broad has been rested from the one-day series against South Africa ahead of the World Twenty20 where he will be captain.Broad, whose lack of pace during the Test series was highlighted although he finished as England’s leading wicket-taker, will return to lead the team in the three-match Twenty20 series against South Africa before the squad departs for Sri Lanka. He is the only notable absentee from the one-day squad – Kevin Pietersen’s continued exclusion was not a surprise – which beat Australia 4-0 earlier in the season, a result which helped England to the top of the ODI rankings.Chris Woakes, the Warwickshire allrounder who has been around numerous squads this season, will hope that Broad’s absence will open the way for him.Ravi Bopara is back in the England set-up after pulling out of the Test series against South Africa due to personal issues. He returned for Essex at the weekend, making 1 against Netherlands in the CB40, and an agreement has been reached for him to play for Gloucestershire against the South Africans in a 50-over match at Bristol on Wednesday to help him prepare for the series.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “We are grateful to both Essex and Gloucestershire for agreeing to allow Ravi Bopara to play for Gloucestershire against South Africa on Wednesday. Ravi has had some time away from the game and we feel that he will benefit from some extra cricket ahead of the start of the NatWest Series and with no games for Essex before we begin our preparations for the first match this is an ideal opportunity for him.”All players in the 14-man NatWest ODI Series squad were involved in the recent series victory against Australia. We will be looking for this side to build on the recent success we have had and to show further signs of improvement against a strong South Africa side.”Squad Alastair Cook (capt) James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Craig Kieswetter, Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Chris Woakes

Everton target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg can be what Fabian Delph was supposed to be

Everton signed Fabian Delph during the summer transfer window, and it was suggested in September by the player himself that director of football Marcel Brands had brought him to Goodison Park to provide some experience and leadership to the younger members of the squad.

That hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far though.

The 30-year-old played the full 90 minutes in four straight Premier League defeats in September and October under Marco Silva, and has also missed 10 top flight matches through injury.

The former Manchester City man was also a second-half substitute in the disastrous 1-0 loss against a severely-weakened Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup earlier this month, and didn’t react in the best way in the aftermath.

The Englishman was spoken to by manager Carlo Ancelotti having been involved in a confrontation with a Toffees fans on social media, which is certainly not what you expect from a player of his knowledge and experience.

Delph may well wear his heart on his sleeve – as The Athletic has reported – but this was not the right way to respond and he has since been booed when coming on as a substitute.

In addition, he was brought in to help influence the younger members of the team and keep them calm and presumably able to hold onto leads, but that is something they failed to do in disastrous circumstances during the week as Newcastle scored two injury-time goals at Goodison Park to come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Meanwhile, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio told Sky Sports News, via Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (January 23, 9:08pm), that Everton’s primary central midfield target during the January transfer window is Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Despite there being older and more experienced players such as Ryan Bertrand, Shane Long and James Ward-Prowse in the Southampton team, it was the then 23-year-old Dane who Ralph Hasenhuttl quickly named as his captain when he was appointed as Mark Hughes’ successor at St Mary’s in December 2018.

He has stood up to the plate, too.

He skippered the team to Premier League survival last season, and has been a real driving force in the middle of the park in Saints’ revival in recent months.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that he had made more possession recoveries (208) than any other top flight player this term, and by quite a significant number.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Of course, the upturn in form has largely come following the humiliating 9-0 defeat at home to Leicester City at the end of October.

It would have been very easy for Hojbjerg to shirk the responsibility of speaking to the media post-match, but he instead came out and apologised – a much better reaction than Delph’s after the Merseyside derby, one would suggest.

The Denmark international has shown maturity beyond his years in the past 12 months or so especially, and has all of the ingredients to be exactly what the Everton man hasn’t been should he end up signing on at Goodison.

In other Everton news, Toffees fans have been reacting to the performance of a “frightening” Premier League ace, with some saying they want him at Goodison Park…

Bayern Munich and Neuer are in for a shock if they think this Liverpool team are vulnerable

After finishing second in their Champions League group, Liverpool were given a tough draw in the first knockout round of the competition with German giants Bayern Munich now awaiting them.

And while Niko Kovac’s men have had their struggles in the Bundesliga this season, they certainly possess enough quality to beat almost any team on their day with Manuel Neuer certainly fancying his side’s chances ahead of the tie.

The Breakdown

Speaking on Liverpool following yesterday’s draw (Goal), the Bayern Munich captain said: “They’re having a very good season and we know they were in the Champions League final last year.

“They certainly won’t be delighted with the draw, either. They can counter quickly and they’re dangerous in front of goal, but they’re also vulnerable, as we’ve seen, and they’ll be up against a good Bayern attack.”

Being a club of their stature, Bayern will never go into any game feeling like the inferior team. But even so, Neuer is probably not giving Liverpool the respect they deserve, a Liverpool team who are more than capable of winning the upcoming clash between the two European heavyweights. Right now, there is arguably not a better team in world football than Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And with the way Bayern have defended at times this season, if anyone is vulnerable, it is them with neither Jerome Boateng or Mats Hummels looking like the high-calibre centre-halves everyone had become accustomed to watching in recent years.

Southampton should go for Dack in January

Since gaining promotion from League One with Blackburn Rovers last time out, Bradley Dack has taken to the Championship in an emphatic fashion – to the extent that he must surely now be attracting the interest of some Premier League clubs.

What’s the word?

The 24-year-old has managed four goals and one assist in his first six games in the second tier. From his position as an attacking midfielder those are brilliant figures. Last time out, in League One, his 18 goals and nine assists were vital to Rovers’ promotion.

His form has also seen his market value rise exponentially. Transfermarkt currently consider Dack to be worth £4.5 million, whereas they only valued him at £900k a year ago.

[ad_pod ]

Top flight clubs will certainly have taken notice of Dack’s impressive rise, and recent examples such as James Maddison and David Brooks have already proven that top Championship talents can thrive in the Premier League.

All that remains to be seen now is which, if any, top tier teams will take a gamble on Dack.

Southampton would be wise to ensure that they’re the ones who act fastest and roll the dice on the London-born midfielder.

Worth a roll of the dice

The Saints have not been able to rely upon regular goals or a high level of creativity from any one member of their midfield contingent for some time now. This goes a long way towards explaining why the south coast club came so close to relegation last time out.

Dack could potentially offer a solution to these attacking woes. He certainly deserves a chance to test himself in the Premier League and St Mary’s Stadium offers as good a stage as any. What’s more, the Blackburn man is well within Mark Hughes’ financial reach, meaning the club have little to lose in gambling on the in-form ace in January.

What do you think, Saints fans – would you be happy to see your club take a punt on Dack in the next transfer window?

Tottenham allowing Zaha to join Borussia Dortmund could help them land Pulisic

According to reports in The Sun, Borussia Dortmund are ready to use the money they get from selling Andriy Yarmolenko to West Ham United to sign Crystal Palace winger and Tottenham Hotspur target Wilfried Zaha, and they could be two deals that help Spurs out in their pursuit of another attacker.

What’s the word, then?

Well, a separate report in The Sun on July 6 revealed that Zaha had turned down a bumper new £125,000-a-week deal to extend his current £100,000-a-week contract at Selhurst Park, with Spurs, Borussia Dortmund and Everton among his suitors.

The latest report in The Sun says that Dortmund are ready to launch a big-money swoop for the Ivory Coast international should Yarmolenko complete a move to West Ham, as they look to bring in another wide player to boost replace the Ukraine international and strengthen their attacking options.

However, according to German media outlet Kicker, via The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino is also keen to sign Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic, rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt.

[ad_pod ]

How would letting Zaha go to Dortmund help them?

Well, if Spurs allow the Crystal Palace to move to Germany in a big-money move there is no question that it would help them in their bid to bring the young American to north London, considering he plays in a similar position and could cost a significant fee if Dortmund need to balance the books somehow.

Pochettino, who has been told by the fans to get rid of an attacker following a new development, may feel that at 19 years of age Pulisic has more potential and room to grow than the Eagles man does, and he would also be able to provide cover and compete for a number of positions given he can play on either wing or in the No.10 position that Dele Alli often occupies.

Rangers fans are loving Caixinha’s tough treatment of Forrester

As reported by The Daily Record, Pedro Caixinha has banished Rangers midfielder Harry Forrester from first-team training, also advising him to find a new club.

It’s a particularly bold action but a sign that the manager is stamping his authority on his new look squad at Auchenhowie.

It’s not clear why the midfielder has been sent packing but The Daily Record report that it came after a workout and that the 26 year old had previously been sent away from training due to Caixinha being unimpressed with his attitude.

Rangers have a summer of hard work ahead if they’re to start to close the gap on Celtic and it’s clear the Portuguese is determined to get them there, even if it means laying down the law for players he feels aren’t keeping up.

The move hasn’t really come as a surprise to Light Blues fans who feel like Forrester is wasting his talent. They’re also enjoying the way Caixinha is setting standards at the club.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the situation…

Wenger backing Bacca to deliver Premier League title for Arsenal

According to an exclusive reported by The Sun, Arsene Wenger is ready to make AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca his big January signing and may have already opened negotiations to sign him.

What’s the word?

Never one to miss out on the crazy, massive transfer stories, The Sun report that in order to boost their Premier League ambitions this season, Arsenal are looking to a previous transfer target in Carlos Bacca.

The Colombian international is out of favour with Milan boss Vincenzo Montella according to The Sun, who say that Bacca could be available for £20m.

It’d be a sensational move if it came off, given that the paper also reports Bacca snubbed Arsenal last year to join Milan from Sevilla.

Can he fire Arsenal to title glory?

Added to an already impressive Arsenal attack of Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, there’s no doubting that if Bacca did sign, Arsene Wenger would have one of – if not the best – strike forces in the Premier League.

The 30-year old scored 20 goals for AC Milan last season in 43 appearances and he’s kept up a similar scoring rate this season, managing six in 13 appearances.

In the past, he helped Sevilla to UEFA Europa League glory two seasons in a row, netting a penalty in the 2013/14 shootout before scoring an unbelievable double in the 2014/15 final to deliver the trophy.

A move for Bacca would should Arsenal are serious about silverware this season with Wenger traditionally hesitant to splash the cash on players at the age Bacca is – especially in the January window.

Still only 30 though, the Milan forward has plenty to offer and we’ll be watching this one closely in January.

Can Chris Hughton’s new-look Brighton side go all the way?

Last year, the Championship season simply swept Brighton by. The Seagulls finished 20th, a terrible finish for a squad consisting of several quality players. Their hugely impressive new stadium was fairly sparsely populated by the end of the season, as the locals expressed their displeasure at the standard of football on offer at home games. A porous defence leaked goals like a sieve, while a fairly toothless strike-force simply did not stick the ball in the net on a regular enough basis. What a difference a few months makes. Now the Seagulls are playing with the sort of confidence and swagger that befits a team flying high at the top of the league. New signings have doubtless made a huge difference to the side for a start. The experience and class of Bobby Zamora will have done wonders for the group, with his knowledge and years of acquired wisdom about the game a massive asset to the south coast side. He can still over a great deal on the pitch as well, and will be very useful as potentially a back-up striker to the main man at the moment, Israeli international Tomer Hemed, who signed in the summer. Hemed has settled in well to life at Brighton, scoring six goals so far this campaign. He has been ably supported by other attacking players such as new signing Jamie Murphy, a summer acquisition from Sheffield United, and Beram Kayal, who brings a bit of class to the midfield after moving from Celtic in January. Added to the trickery and flair of Kazenga LuaLua (younger brother of THE LuaLua), who is adept at bursting past defenders with either pace or skill, and you can see that they have a formidable attacking line up.The defence is also looking strong, experienced Scotsman Gordon Greer marshalling a backline that includes Bruno Saltor, Inigo Calderon and Lewis Dunk (who also has a habit of picking up a fair few goals). Relentlessly well-organised and well-drilled this year, the momentary lapse in concentration that led to Boltons last minute equaliser last Saturday will have hurt and group; Chris Hughton is a coach who prides himself on organisation and a hard work ethic that lets every opposing team they’re in for a serious game when they take on the Seagulls. Hughton is a man on a mission, having taken over in December after a miserable few months for Brighton under the stewardship of Sami Hypia, for whom things just didn’t work out. Hughtons first job after arriving at the AMEX was simply to stabilise a side who were careering around the lower echelons of the Championship with no direction and no belief.Having removed any realistic possibilities of relegation, thoughts turned to the next season. Results still remained fairly low-key, but Hughton was quietly putting the blocks in place, on the training ground and in the transfer market, to make this season a much better one. Getting the large crowd that the AMEX can still attract fully behind the players has been one of his biggest achievements, and the ground now gets one of the largest average attendances in the league. While they may not be seeing all-out attacking football with the constant prospect of their side overwhelming visiting teams, Brighton play a neat passing style of football with midfielders and wingers who always look to break into the box, all with Hemed doing an excellent job leading the line, mostly on his own.Hughtons side may not have the stand-out names or familiar faces that Derby, Burnley or Middlesbrough, but with each win their confidence will keep growing and this new-look side will become harder and harder to face. If anyone now asks if they can get promoted, while there is still of course a very long way to go, I would ask in response, why not?

All-time great moved to Turin in 2018Inspired those around himNot always the easiest to work withWHAT HAPPENED?

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner completed a stunning transfer to Turin from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018. He was one of the last marquee signings put in place during Marotta’s time with the Bianconeri and registered 101 goals for the Serie A giants through 134 appearances.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT MAROTTA SAID ABOUT RONALDO

Ronaldo delivered two league titles and a Coppa Italia triumph during his time with Juve, but he was not always the easiest to work with. Marotta has told of bringing the all-time great on board and how he acted behind the scenes: “He was a very good player, he still is and above all he is a great champion. The champion is that person who manages to convey beliefs to his team-mates. He was a bit of a leader of the team, he was the most famous and he dragged the others into the game. So, it was challenging, but he didn’t make me angry.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo did go on to ruffle feathers back at Manchester United, leading to his release in November 2022, with Paul Pogba doing likewise during his time at Old Trafford. Marotta says the French midfielder was his most difficult piece of recruitment business when first taking him to Turin in 2012. He added: “There is a player today who’s at Juventus called Pogba. It was a very complicated deal. Because he came from Manchester United, he hadn’t signed a contract so there were many teams that wanted him. It was difficult to negotiate his purchase, it was very complex.”
