Falk drops enticing Tottenham transfer claim

According to an update by Bild journalist Christian Falk (via Sport Witness), dropping an enticing Tottenham transfer claim, target and 6 foot 3 colossus Jerome Boateng could ‘imagine’ moving to London this summer after his contract expires.

Boateng is set to leave the Allianz Arena at the end of 2020/2021 after Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed his current deal will not be extended (The Athletic).

Now, amid speculation surrounding his future, Falk believes the World Cup winner could be open to a London move in a possible boost for Tottenham Hotspur.

Falk drops enticing Boateng claim

The Lilywhites and chairman Daniel Levy have been linked with Boateng recently and Falk has addressed those rumours to Bild (via Sport Witness).

“Yes, from the people we heard about the potential interest and that the player very well could imagine a move to London at the moment,” explained the journalist.

“Nothing has been said yet, there are no concrete talks, but just that his name appears on the shortlist.

“I think his stock has gone up a bit because we saw him playing against Paris Saint Germain and he was used to defend against Neymar. It was good publicity for the man.”

Transfer Tavern take

While Boateng has plenty of experience at the highest level, we believe that Tottenham should be looking elsewhere for much needed defensive reinforcements.

Alasdair Gold recently claimed that Spurs are eyeing a ‘leader’ to marshal their shaky backline, and his listed targets Lewis Dunk, Joachim Andersen and Nikola Milenkovic all come as much better options than Boateng.

The German could command high wages of around £205,000-per-week, and at 32-years-old, he may not be able to put in brilliant performances on such a regular basis in the Premier League.

MCFC fans unhappy at Nmecha news

Manchester City fans are far from happy after it was revealed the Citizens will not offer Lukas Nmecha a new contract and will instead look to sell him this summer.

22-year-old Nmecha has been with City since 2007 and has progressed through the youth ranks into professional football. So far, he has managed just three appearances for City (Transfermarkt), but he is currently enjoying a fantastic loan campaign with Anderlecht in Belgium – he has managed 17 goals and three assists in 34 games in all competitions.

However, despite his impressive form, it seems the four-time Premier League winners are not eager to keep him at the club in the long-term. They are reportedly not interested in offering him a new deal and will look to move him at the end of the term – he is believed to be valued at just €8m (£7m).

This news was shared via Sport Witness on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the City supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Aston Villa team and injury news vs Fulham

After falling to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham just before the international break, Aston Villa will be eager to get back to winning ways when they take on Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Dean Smith’s side have seen their form in the top flight stall somewhat, coinciding with Jack Grealish’s absence from the team – they’ve won just once in their past six games without the skipper and have scored only three goals in that time.

The England international is back for the game against the Cottagers, though, after Smith confirmed the 25-year-old’s return to full fitness in his pre-match press conference.

Grealish’s reintroduction could be among a couple of key changes the Villa boss makes, and with that in mind, below is a look at how the team might line up when Fulham come to town on Sunday afternoon.

In goal, Emiliano Martinez will be hoping to bounce back to his usual form after dropping a clanger in the defeat to Spurs when his kick gifted Spurs their first goal.

The back four should remain unchanged, with Villa boosted by the news in midweek that Ezri Konsa has penned an extension to his contract and will remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

John McGinn – off the back of a superb overhead kick on international duty with Scotland – should keep his place alongside Douglas Luiz, but Morgan Sanson is likely to drop out for the return of Grealish. It would certainly be a big call to throw him straight back into the team after so many weeks out, but Villa could desperately do with a lift given their slump in form.

The £47,000-a-week earning Trezeguet could also come out of the starting line-up, with Dutchman Anwar El Ghazi pushing for a recall, especially with the former badly struggling for end product this term – he has scored no goals in the Premier League all season.

That will leave Ollie Watkins to lead the line once again as he seeks to maintain his ever-present status in the league.

Predicted XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Luiz, McGinn; Traore, Grealish, El Ghazi; Watkins.

Meanwhile, Villa should go after this Premier League star…

Tottenham source lifts lid on Levy plan

According to Football Insider, a Lilywhites source has lifted the lid on Daniel Levy’s plan for a ‘major summer rebuild’ at Tottenham as he makes a Jose Mourinho decision – with the chairman looking set to give him another year at the helm.

Mourinho, who has been under mounting pressure recently, with numerous managerial candidates linked to potentially succeeding him, will apparently be given another season at Spurs according to this report.

Tottenham source lifts lid on Levy plan

Indeed, a Tottenham source close to the club has apparently lifted the lid on Levy’s decision on Mourinho which doesn’t involve an untimely sacking as the chairman plots to give his pet project another chance to succeed next year.

It is said that only a ‘catastrophic’ end to the season would force Levy into changing his mind, but Football Insider are unclear as to what defines that sort of finish to 2020/2021.

Levy is reportedly prepared to back Mourinho in what is expected to be a ‘major summer rebuild’ – which would enable the Spurs boss to have more time to build his own team.

The alleged cost of sacking him, not to mention his track record of being able to ‘churn out results’, are apparently big factors in Levy’s call to stick with the under-fire manager.

Time will tell whether this stance changes, but as it stands, Levy looks set to back Mourinho.

Phil Hay provides Leeds injury update

Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Rodrigo will both be fitÂfor their Premier League clash with Chelsea, The Athletic‘s Phil Hay has confirmed.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side host the Blues on Saturday lunchtime, in what could be an entertaining game to kick-off the weekend’s action.

Leeds have lost four of their last five league games, however, including away to West Ham on Monday night, so they need to return to winning ways as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are unbeaten since Thomas Tuchel took charge in January, highlighting the difficulty of Leeds’ task at Elland Road.

Hay provides key injury update

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Hay provided an update on the Whites’ injury situation, confirming that Pascal Struijk and Pablo Hernandez would both be unavailable, but providing a promising 12-word message on Phillips and Rodrigo: “Phillips and Rodrigo came through the West Ham game without any issues.”.

Jamie Shackleton is also back, while Robin Koch could play for the Under-23s on Monday, as they host Newcastle United’s youngsters.

Big boost for Bielsa

There is certainly good and bad news in the injury department, but Phillips and Rodrigo being available is a massive lift for Bielsa.

Although they were beaten by the Hammers, Phillips’ return allows everyone else in the defence to play their natural positions rather than shifting around to cover his absence, while Patrick Bamford was isolated in the games Rodrigo missed.

Leeds will have their work cut out picking up a win against an in-form Chelsea side, but they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road earlier in the season, showing they can certainly compete with the best if their top players are fit and firing.

Sunderland: Who is Josh Hawkes?

Sunderland are trophy winners for the first time in 48 years. That is well and truly a sentence to savour.

With the Mackems now sitting third in League One as well, there are plenty of reasons to be positive and hopeful for the future.

Lee Johnson has led a fantastic revival in the north-east and with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus now the club’s owner, negativity and bad vibes have been eradicated.

The Frenchman already has a trophy to his name and more could follow suit if they earn promotion.

That is the number one priority at Sunderland right now but another is to blood young talent. Louis-Dreyfus has reshaped the academy structure and a number of young players have been handed trials at the club.

He is desperate to improve the academy and who can blame him? The Black Cats’ U23 side didn’t win a single game last term.

We were given a glimpse into the future just by looking at Sunderland’s bench on Sunday at Wembley. They may have a number of injuries but it was pleasant to see the likes of Dan Neil, Ollie Younger, Jack Diamond and Benji Kimpioka all among the substitutes.

Though, one name who wasn’t but deserves a run out in the not too distant future is Josh Hawkes. The 21-year-old was signed from Hartlepool a few months ago but hasn’t seen a great deal of senior action since.

Hawkes was on the bench for the match against Rochdale a few weeks ago and did receive minutes during their successful EFL Trophy run. That being said, despite injuries, he hasn’t been able to sufficiently force his way into Johnson’s plans.

Judging by his form for the club’s U23 side, that should change. The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, has been a breath of fresh air to Elliott Dickman’s team.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-sunderland-news-and-gossip” title=” Latest Sunderland news and gossip!”]

He has scored six goals and registered three assists in 13 Premier League 2 outings. Hawkes has long been a goal-scoring midfielder and in 2018/19, hit the back of the net on nine occasions for Hartlepool in the National League.

Speaking about his qualities to Sunderland blog Roker Report, Hartlepool expert Dan Patton said: “Josh is a player with clear ability, which was most evident in his first season with the club after scoring nine goals from midfield.”

Patton continued: “His best position is an attacking midfield role, however he can also play in a wide attacking role if needed. He is a player that won’t shy away from shooting, no matter the distance, and brings a real energy into the midfield.”

Possessing a midfielder who can make late runs into the penalty and score goals is a fantastic attribute to have in your team. Certainly, with qualities like that, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Johnson soon called on him.

After all, Diamond’s shoddy performance against Accrington on Wednesday evening will have him looking over his shoulder. The youngster managed just three passes and 18 touches of the ball before being dragged off at half time in their 2-0 win.

The future may well be bright for Diamond, but Hawkes is someone who could rival him for a place in the senior side.

Daniel James enjoying renaissance at Man United

Manchester United had a frustrating afternoon on Sunday after labouring to a goalless draw with Chelsea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer definitely thought it was a case of two points dropped in west London, with the Norwegian bemoaning Stuart Attwell’s controversial refereeing decision not to award United a penalty in the first half.

But putting that doom and gloom aside, Solskjaer was glowing in his praise of James and gave him “top, top marks” for his performance.

On the Chalkboard

The Welshman has struggled to get a consistent run of game time in the squad, but the winger’s hard graft in that draw with Chelsea earned plenty of appreciation from his manager.

He has also found his shooting boots again after a well-publicised drought and followed a first goal of the season against Istanbul Basaksehir in November with vital strikes against Southampton, Real Sociedad and Newcastle United in recent weeks, showing he’s having somewhat of a renaissance at Old Trafford.

James is benefitting from Paul Pogba’s injury-enforced absence too, with Solskjaer using his pace to full effect down the right flank in a position that had been taken by the Frenchman – notably away at Liverpool.

The inclusion of James in the side also allows Marcus Rashford to revert to his preferred position on the left-hand side, making the England man much more of an attacking threat with his habit of cutting inside on his right foot.

What should happen?

Once Pogba returns to action, one would hope that James continues to get a good run of game time under his belt in the side.

While undoubtedly gifted, Pogba’s position in an attacking wide area often slows down the pace of United’s play and is arguably more suited being deployed as a central attacking midfielder.

James’ main quality is his electric pace that scares the life out of opposition full-backs, but his lack of assists is arguably the missing ingredient to his game.

He has just one of those to his name so far this campaign after teeing up Bruno Fernandes in United’s emphatic 4-0 Europa League Round of 32 first leg victory away at Real Sociedad.

But after being given the license to play with his manager’s confidence, it is surely only a matter of time before James starts to provide the goals for United’s attacking players on a regular basis. If it’s not, then he’ll likely find himself back on the sidelines.
