Aston Villa fans concerned about their next run of fixtures

Aston Villa’s consecutive victories over Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion had lifted the newly-promoted club beyond the immediate threat of relegation, but three successive defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Wolves have left these fans terrified of the club’s next six games following an official tweet.

Villa, who have returned to the top-flight following a three-year absence, currently sit 17th in the league table having won just three of their first 12 fixtures.

The prospect of facing Newcastle United, Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester City, Sheffield United and Liverpool across both league and Carabao Cup action is proving to be a daunting prospect for a number of the club’s fans.

Gaining traction over the next six games will be vital for Dean Smith’s side if they are to ensure relegation does not become a considerable concern, but these supporters have been letting their feelings be known following an official club tweet.

Here are some of the best reactions to Villa’s next six fixtures.

Man Utd legend Nicky Butt delivers promising verdict on Scott McTominay

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by the club’s official website, Nicky Butt has lauded the development of Scott McTominay, and urged him to continue to progress as a box-to-box midfielder.

What did he say?

The Scotland international has become a mainstay in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s line-up this season, playing the full 90 minutes in every single Premier League game barring two – against Crystal Palace and Southampton respectively.

The 22-year-old has also notched three goals and an assist, and Butt has revealed he has been left suitably “impressed” by the academy product.

United’s head of first-team development said: “I’ve been impressed. We’ve had so many going in and doing well in different parts. Scott has now become established, even though he’s still a very young player. He’s doing really well.

“Scott’s now trying to develop his game into the player he was in the younger teams, when he scored goals, got into the box and dominated. He has embedded himself into the squad now and he’s become one of the first names on the team sheet. He’s done that bit, which is hard: settling in, not making too many mistakes, keeping it simple. Now the next step is getting back to being a box-to-box midfielder, getting goals, stopping goals at the other end.”

Rapid rise

Really breaking through into the United first-team set-up under Jose Mourinho – he played 31 times under the Portuguese manager – McTominay has come on leaps and bounds under Solskjaer in the past year or so.

As per Whoscored, he is averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 1.7 shots and 0.8 key passes per game in the Premier League this season. In the previous top-flight campaign, those numbers were down at 0.6, 0.9, 0.9 and 0.1 respectively. The levels of improvement in just a season is quite staggering, and that is a testament to the work McTominay must undoubtedly be putting in.

Already a permanent fixture in the United team now, the 6 foot 4 powerhouse could hold down a place in the Red Devils’ midfield for many years to come.

Man City fans left gutted by David Silva injury news

Manchester City fans are bitterly disappointed on the news that playmaker David Silva could miss the vital clash with Liverpool this week.

Indeed, following the weekend win over Southampton, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Silva is a major doubt for the game next weekend and will certainly miss the trip to Atalanta in midweek.

The champions will travel to Anfield on Sunday in what is set to be the biggest match of the Premier League season so far. A win for the home side could put them nine points ahead, with Liverpool’s late winner against Aston Villa keeping them six points adrift of City at the moment.

Silva has, of course, been of immense importance to the Sky Blues over the last decade and will be a huge miss this Sunday. The Spaniard has three goals and four assists in the league so far, and he continues to prove his worth to the club week in, week out.

Some fans have alluded to the fact Phil Foden could come in for Silva. However, most supporters are gutted by the news and can’t believe their luck with injuries this season.

Here’s what some City fans have had to say on this bad news…

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong was brilliant for the Netherlands once again

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Frenkie de Jong dropping a masterclass performance is hardly newsworthy at this point.

The 22-year-old Dutch star has taken the Catalan stage by storm ever since his arrival at the club in the summer.

De Jong has settled quite nicely at Barcelona and has been an important piece of Ernesto Valverde’s jigsaw throughout the 2019/20 season.

So far, he has played in all of the games, recording ten appearances across all competitions and managing to score and assist once in the process. But one thing was peculiar about the coach’s decision regarding his young midfielder.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Back at Ajax, his former club, De Jong was predominantly used as a defensive midfielder or as a “pivote” as they would call it in Spain. For the 89 games Transfermarkt have in their database, De Jong spent 51 of them as the team’s defensive midfielder and only 16 as a more advanced, central midfielder.

This suggested that he might be the ideal Sergio Busquets replacement at Barcelona but Valverde had other ideas. So far, out of the ten games we’ve seen of young Dutchman in the Blaugrana kit, he was deployed as their central midfielder in seven of those while registering just three games as their pivote.

Even though it seemed rather weird deploying him in a position that doesn’t necessarily come naturally to him, De Jong seems to be thriving and embracing that role even for his national team.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

When the Netherlands faced Belarus, Barcelona’s star was deployed on the left of a midfield three in a more advanced role, just as Valverde likes it as well.

And unsurprisingly, he didn’t disappoint.

The Netherlands won the game 2-1 and De Jong deployed four key passes, created one big chance and warranted an 8.3 rating according to Sofascore. He also had 118 touches on the night, maintained 92% passing accuracy and completed four out of four long balls.

Not to mention that he was a real threat going forward, successfully dribbling past his markers on five occasions and winning eight ground duels.

But even in that more advanced role, he still mustered three interceptions and one tackle to his name in the process.

The great news for Barcelona, however, is De Jong’s ability to influence the game in a role that Valverde seemingly prefers the young Dutchman in.

It still remains to be seen if he can replicate that going forward.

QPR: The numbers behind Nahki Wells’ impressive start to 2019/20

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Under the management of Mark Warburton, Queens Park Rangers have started their 2019/20 Championship campaign in strong form to emerge as contenders for the play-offs, and the performances of Nahki Wells will be giving the west London side faith that they really can return to the promised land of the Premier League.

The R’s have scored 18 goals so far in the current campaign, the joint-fourth highest of all teams in the division, and central to the club’s goalscoring record has been Wells – the Bermuda international who has scored six goals.

Wells’ goalscoring prowess, combined with Jordan Hugill’s six strikes, is propelling the club towards the realms of the play-offs, but it is Wells who is catching the eye with his clinical performances.

Whilst Wells and Hugill have both scored six league goals, Wells has done so having played just 519 minutes in the league, compared to Hugill’s 852 minutes.

The 29-year-old is also taking more shots in the box, averaging one every 34.6 minutes, while Hugill is taking a shot from inside the penalty area every 47.3 minutes in the league.

Wells is playing a hugely important role for Warburton’s side in 2019/20 – not only scoring goals but doing so at a ridiculously clinical rate, holding the best minutes-per-goal (87) of any striker in the Championship to have scored more than three goals.

If the striker is able to continue scoring at this remarkable efficiency, then the west London outfit could truly be in with a chance of returning to the English top-flight and ending a six-year absence in the process.

Leeds fans hail Stuart Dallas amid contract discussion

New contracts are seemingly at the height of Leeds’ priorities at the moment after it was confirmed that Kalvin Phillips was set to sign a new deal.

Renewed terms could also be on the table for Stuart Dallas considering he’s out of contract at the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman spoke to Yorkshire Evening Post at the weekend, claiming his future was in Leeds’ hands as he discussed a potential new deal.

He said: “I’m in the last year of my contract so let’s see what happens. It’s something that’s in the clubs hands, we’ll see.”

The quotes seemed to excite Leeds fans who decided to throw support behind the 28-year-old with many suggesting he deserved a new deal.

One supporter claimed that he was much improved under Marcelo Bielsa as a further individual said it was a no-brainer for the club to get it done.

Another fan labelled Dallas as one of the most honest players going, claiming he was a credit to Leeds.

The versatile performer signed for the Whites in 2015 and has had a blistering start to the new campaign.

He scored against Stoke a few weeks ago and is averaging a match rating of 7.09, per WhoScored.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith must consider change of system

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa’s playoff-winning honeymoon in the Premier League has been far from the perfect marriage.

It started with a Saturday evening trip to north London to face the Champions League finalists, Tottenham, who were baying for blood after defeat to Liverpool.

They then finished just before the international break with a controversial loss just north of Croydon – not the most glamorous holiday, mind.

The angry scenes at Selhurst Park weren’t helped by the referee nor from winger Trezeguet, who was sent off for two silly yellow cards – but that in itself epitomised what appears to be a problem out wide for Villa boss Dean Smith.

The aforementioned Egyptian plus Jota and Anwar El Ghazi have managed just a goal and one assist between them in four Premier League matches, per WhoScored, which isn’t good enough and considering they’ve lost three of those games, something has to change.

On the Chalkboard

One solution may lie in a slight tweak to the system, one that could be made a serious reality because of the options Smith has at his disposal.

The squad has a wealth of talent in central midfield – if you consider that Jack Grealish and John McGinn are certainties to start then you’ve also got the summer signing pair of Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba on top of Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury.

Currently, only one of those four are going to get a start alongside the boss’ regular duo – both played 34 or more games last season and have started all four games this campaign.

Even then, it is usually a defensive-minded midfielder so that rules out Lansbury to some extent.

But the 48-year-old should utilise another one of them in what could be a diamond midfield spearheaded by McGinn or Grealish.

Hourihane did no wrong in the opening game against Spurs, scoring a rating of 7.06 before being dropped for Luiz ever since.

Meanwhile, Lansbury has shown he could prove to be an unlikely rotation option gong forward after his brace in the Carabao Cup.

Considering the wingers have struggled in the Premier League, moving to this system and making use of their strength in depth in midfield would be a viable alternative. It could just allow them to finally thrive in the Premier League.

Tottenham will finish above Arsenal in the Premier League says Jose Mourinho

[ad_pod ]

Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho thinks Tottenham will finish ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League this season.

What did he say?

The Gunners and Spurs played out an intense and thrilling affair on Sunday in the first north London derby of the campaign. Mauricio Pochettino’s side move into a 2-0 lead, but Unai Emery and co were able to claw their way back to a 2-2 draw.

Following the match, Mourinho shared his thoughts on the two sides, and said he believes Tottenham will end the season in a higher position than their great rivals. He said on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday (via The Daily Express):

“I still think Tottenham.

“I still think what we laughed about when we were at Old Trafford, when I gave my four candidates to win the title, definitely City and Liverpool and then Tottenham is still the third-best team.

“But I like many things on the Arsenal squad.”

“It feels like a loss” – that was the view of a Spurs fan after this weekend’s North London Derby in the video below…

Arsenal to fall short despite positive attributes

There were plenty of positives for Arsenal to take from the game against Spurs. The fight they displayed to earn a draw when the game looked dead at 2-0 will set them in good stead this term. Also, the presence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe moving forward will make them a dangerous proposition for any side.

However, when looking at Spurs’ squad, the talent is evenly spread out, where as Arsenal’s looks a little attack and midfield-heavy. There is a reason this Tottenham side made it to the Champions League final last term. Throughout the team, there are fantastic players such as Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane, whilst the signings of Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso should only strengthen the side. Emery, meanwhile, appears to have too many players who he does not fancy, such as Mohamed Elneny and Shkodran Mustafi. There is still some top quality there, such as the aforementioned attacking trio and others such as Dani Ceballos, but there appears to be less than what Pochettino can choose from.

Arsenal may have displayed grit and character, but it is talent that wins you points. As such, Tottenham should just edge the Gunners in the table.
