Martinez leading contender for Newcastle

Roberto Martinez is reportedly the leading contender to replace Steve Bruce if he were to leave Newcastle United, according to Football Insider.

As per the news outlet, the position of the former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss is ‘under growing threat’ with the lack of harmony in the dressing room and calls from many members of the Toon Army for him to be sacked, all in the midst of a battle to avoid being relegated from the Premier League down to the EFL Championship.

A source at the St. James’ park faithful has since told the publication that Martinez is ‘firmly in the frame’ to potentially take over from Bruce should he leave the North East.

There is already a connection between the current Belgium national team manager and the Tyneside club, as Graeme Jones used to be his assistant.

Newcastle go for Martinez if Bruce leaves

If Bruce were to leave at the end of the 2020/21 term, then the Magpies should look no further than the appointment of Martinez.

The Spaniard has a vast amount of experience managing in the English top flight with Everton and Wigan Athletic, famously guiding the latter to an unlikely FA Cup triumph against Manchester City in the 2013 final.

He has also got Belgium to number one in the FIFA World Rankings, and so has clearly achieved a lot in his managerial career so far.

Nonetheless, the 47-year-old would no doubt be an aspired appointment by NUFC if Bruce were to leave.

Rangers’ Jones impressing at Sunderland

Jordan Jones is perhaps putting himself back in Steven Gerrard’s good books with some impressive performances on loan at Sunderland in League One and Ross Wilson should arguably think again about letting him leave Ibrox this summer.

After a breach of the lockdown guidelines in November 2020, both Jones and George Edmundson were given seven-game bans, and were subsequently sent on loan to Sunderland and Derby County respectively.

The 26-year-old winger had made just four appearances in all competitions for Gerrard’s side before the suspension, in which he contributed one goal – an impressive finish in the 5-1 win against Motherwell in September.

However, he has shown his class with Lee Johnson’s side in recent appearances, with two goals and three assists in his last six league appearances, including an impressive display in their most recent league victory against fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth.

Considering his contract with Rangers is not set to expire until 2023, Ross Wilson may well be licking his lips at the prospect of Jones’ value increasing as a result of his form in England, but you could argue that he now deserves another chance to show what he can do with the Ibrox outfit.

Although he has struggled for the Gers since signing on a free transfer from Kilmarnock, with just one goal and two assists in 19 appearances, perhaps this loan at Sunderland was just what he needed to boost his confidence ahead of next season.

If it were not for the winger’s mistake regarding the lockdown rules, you would imagine that Gerrard would have kept him in and around the first-team this season, having labelled him a “real threat” earlier in the season.

Therefore, if his impressive form continues at Sunderland, then he should definitely be given a chance in the Rangers first-team set up next season, even if Wilson feels that it is the ideal time to cash in on him this summer.

And, in other news… Wilson should go all out for 13-goal beast if Defoe leaves this summer; he could be a game-changer

Saints handed blow with Wesley Hoedt

Southampton’s hopes of getting rid of Wesley Hoedt look to have suffered a blow, with a recent report suggesting that the Dutch defender is ‘destined’ to return to the south coast club this summer.

According to reports from Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, the 27-year-old will return to Southampton this summer, despite Lazio holding an option to buy the centre-back as part of the deal which saw him join on loan this season.

Southampton signed the defender from Lazio in 2017 for £15m but he has endured a nightmare time with the Saints thus far, having made just 45 appearances in all competitions before a series of disappointing loan spells. He has described his move to St Mary’s as a “mistake” and criticised Ralph Hasenhuttl for not giving him a chance to prove his worth, as per Daily Mail.

He initially joined Celta Vigo for the second half of the 2018/19 season before spending last season on loan with Royal Antwerp, but it seems clear that Hasenhuttl has never been convinced by the defender as he was sent back to Lazio on loan for this season.

He has been limited to just 15 appearances in Serie A for Simone Inzaghi’s side, where he has averaged a lowly 6.36 rating, so you can hardly blame them for not wanting to make his stay a permanent one.

The £5.4m-rated Dutchman’s four-year Southampton nightmare looks set to continue in the summer as he will return to the Saints, where he is presumably unwanted by Hasenhuttl and will likely struggle to move ahead of any of Jannik Vestergaard, Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu or Jack Stephens in the pecking order with the south coast club.

Unfortunately for Martin Semmens, Hoedt’s contact with Southampton doesn’t expire until the end of the 2021/22 season, so he will surely be desperate to sell him this summer; otherwise it seems likely that he will depart on a free transfer next year.

This latest update is frustrating for Southampton, as they perhaps thought they had seen the last of Hoedt when he rejoined Lazio, but his poor performances have ended up costing both clubs, as the Saints will now have to look elsewhere if they want to sell him permanently in the summer.

And, in other news… 62% duels lost: £70k-p/w Saints gem failed to repay Hasenhuttl’s faith vs Man City

Liverpool fans react to Jota update

Speaking to the press, as relayed by correspondent James Pearce, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has shared that Diogo Jota has come back to training in a ‘very positive’ way – with Reds reacting to this update and some believing he should be given the nod to face Sheffield United on Sunday.

The summer signing has been out of action since early December after picking up a knee injury against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League, but he has recently resumed training as Klopp shares another update on his progress for Liverpool.

As relayed by Pearce, the Portugal international has come back to training in a ‘very positive’ way – but Klopp admits a decision needs to be made over when it ‘makes sense’ for him to play again.

Understandably, the Liverpool manager doesn’t want to reintroduce him too soon at the risk of aggravating another injury – with supporters flocking to this update as they share their thoughts.

Some can’t wait for his return and wish to see a cameo against Sheffield United, find all of their best comments down below.

Celtic can sign Tierney heir in Josh Doig

According to Goal, Celtic are tracking Hibernian starlet Josh Doig ahead of a potential transfer move.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old has established himself as a key part of Jack Ross’ squad this season, making 16 appearances in the Scottish Premiership alone.

And now, Goal claim that along with Celtic, the likes of Manchester City and Leeds United are also interested in the left-back, and that he would command a fee of around £1m.

The report adds that despite City’s interest, the likes of Celtic and Leeds could prove to be more attractive propositions given they could give him a clearer route into the first-team.

Could be Celtic’s Tierney successor

Ever since Kieran Tierney left Celtic to move south of the border to join Arsenal in the Premier League back in the summer of 2019, the Hoops haven’t quite settled on a player to fill his shoes.

This season, loanee Diego Laxalt has stepped into the mix, whilst Greg Taylor came into the side for the 2-2 draw against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

But in the 18-year-old Doig, Nick Hammond could well land the Hoops a long-term successor to Tierney. He’s already racking up considerable experience by starting for Hibs week-in and week-out – he’s made 15 starts in the league this campaign.

Goal claims that “scouts have noted Doig’s attacking output as a huge part of his game, with his crossing ability and tireless running two of his key attributes”,  something Tierney really made a name for himself with.

However, he did have a difficult day against Celtic earlier in the season.

Coming up against another young full-back in Jeremie Frimpong, Doig struggled to hold his own, so much so that he was hauled off at half-time in Hibs’ 3-0 defeat to the Hoops.

Speaking after the game, Ross admitted: “Look, it was difficult for him today. He was up against a difficult opponent who has been lauded in recent weeks for being one of their stronger players. He competed well in the first-half.

“When you are that quick and can be that quick from a standing start it is tough to play against. It is another learning experience for Josh. I had a good chat with him at half-time and I will do so again in the coming days. He has been brilliant this season for a young man who has just turned 18. He will be fine and will play a big part for us moving forward.”

One bad performance doesn’t make a player, certainly not someone who is just a teenager. Given his age, and the fact he’s been lauded for his crossing shows that he’s got potential, and could develop into Celtic’s heir to Tierney.

Meanwhile, Celtic could clinch a bargain in this League One gem…

Stats show why Gedson Fernandes may be done at Spurs after FA Cup disasterclass

Tottenham Hotspur eased into the next round of the FA Cup with a 5-0 victory over non-league minnows Marine this evening, though for all of the positives, one player’s performance will have Jose Mourinho seething.

A first-half 13-minute hat-trick by Carlos Vinicius, a pinpoint free-kick from fellow Brazilian Lucas Moura and a debut strike from history-maker Alfie Devine settled the resounding rout at the Marine Travel Arena in Crosby.

Indeed, it was a routine win for against a side that competes in the eighth tier of English football, some 160 places below Spurs in the pyramid.

It gave Mourinho a chance to look at several of his fringe players with the likes of Eric Dier and Harry Kane not even making the trip north.

Benfica loanee Gedson Fernandes was one of many to be gifted a golden opportunity to impress, but he did anything but and was quite clearly the worst player on the pitch.

His performance looks even worse considering the opposition and many fans took fire at him on social media during and after the match.

Gedson was dubbed “absolute garbage” and “one of the worst signings” in Spurs history by one fan, another labelled him a “possession vacuum” as he often lost the ball and there were even members of the Hotspur faithful asking the club to send him back to Portugal.

It’s easy to see why so many were left fuming by his display – per SofaScore, the 22-year-old recorded more touches (117) than any other player but failed to provide much substance as he made 0% of crosses, had zero key passes and fired two shots off target.

The attacking midfielder also lost the ball more times (22) than any other Spurs player, which meant he handed possession back to Marine once every five touches.

Alasdair Gold at football.london wasn’t impressed by the £12.15m-rated Portugal international either, grading him as Spurs’ worst player with a 5/10 in his post-match ratings and claimed: “This won’t have done his case much good to get more minutes.”

Whilst Dan Kilpatrick at the Evening Standard teased that it could’ve been his final game for the club, he said: ” Quite possibly a farewell appearance.”

Sky Sports reported last week that the Primeira Liga outfit wanted to recall Gedson early and Spurs would be open into doing so, well, after that performance, Daniel Levy might as well pay for his plane ticket now.

The £55k-per-week flop’s career at Spurs is surely finished after that shocking and pathetic outing.

Leeds must swoop for PSG star Julian Draxler after reigniting interest

Leeds have had a happy festive period but now it’s over to Victor Orta.

The transfer window opened today and with it, the Spaniard will need to address whether the Whites need to be active in the market.

What’s the word?

It feels unlikely that Leeds will conclude any business when you consider the dramatic sagas of both Daniel James and Jean-Kevin Augustin over the last two years.

However, with a host of defensive injuries, they could be tempted to enter the market for a centre-back.

Though, they are unlikely to find one at PSG where they are still monitoring a player they wanted to sign in the summer. That happens to be German star Julian Draxler.

A few ramblings did the rounds in the summer months suggesting they wanted to land the 27-year-old and now it’s been revealed that Leeds are still very much interested in bringing him to Elland Road.

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) who state that Leeds like the look of Draxler. If a deal isn’t concluded in January, then he’s set to become a free agent in the summer.

PSG signed the attacking midfielder for a fee of £30m so are set to make a hefty loss on their investment.

Hernandez 2.0

Forget Rodrigo, this would undoubtedly be the biggest coup Leeds would seal in terms of modern transfers.

Draxler is a World Cup winner with Germany and played a vital hand in helping the Parisians reach the Champions League final last year. In short, he is a fabulous talent capable of shining in any major league in world football.

You only need to look at the appraisals he received when he was still rising through ranks. Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt once labelled him an “extraordinary talent” and it’s clear to see why that assessment was delivered.

Draxler is a magician on the ball, has earned 54 caps for his country and is a creative mastermind. He can pick passes that very few others can, and that’s why Leeds could finally replace Pablo Hernandez with him.

The Germany international is capable of playing on the flanks – like Hernandez – and he can also feature as a number 10 behind the striker.

He racked up seven assists last term and if you compare their respective careers, Draxler comes incredibly close to replicating the Leeds star’s chance creation. The PSG midfielder has amassed 1.3 key passes per game compared to the 1.9 completed by Hernandez.

With Draxler now in his prime, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he began to close the gap.

Wolves receive huge boost over Luka Jovic pursuit %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Wolves have received a potentially a huge boost in their reported pursuit of Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic.

Jovic Molineux-bound?

Nuno Espirito Santo has previously hinted that he would be willing to dip into the transfer market to seek out a replacement for star man Raul Jimenez, who fractured his skull during his side’s victory over Arsenal at the beginning of the month.

Reports previously suggested that an approach to take Jovic on loan was rejected, but it now appears that a U-turn has been made in relation to the Serbia international’s situation.

According to AS, the 23-year-old has been given the green light by manager Zinedine Zidane to go out on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign.

Despite Jovic not having the best of starts at the Santiago Bernebeu, he made his name at Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 36 goals and provided nine assists from 75 appearances (TransferMarkt).

This led to huge praise being given to him, especially from Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic who compared him to Barcelona’s Luis Suarez (via Bundesliga).

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Jovic would be a fantastic signing and would perfectly fill the boots of Jimenez.

The Serbian frontman has proven pedigree, especially in Europe, and would likely salivate at the chance of playing in the Premier League to rediscover his form, having scored just twice in 32 outings for Madrid.

Now that Jovic has been given the go-ahead to leave, time will tell if the Molineux club decide to go back in for him.

In other news, Jamie Redknapp makes huge claim about Wolves star who can go “to the top.”
