Chelsea can get their Luiz upgrade if they go all out for de Ligt in the summer

After a good spell of defensive solidity, Chelsea’s defence has absolutely crumbled in recent weeks.

Humiliating 4-0 and 6-0 defeats to Bournemouth and Manchester City have seen many eyebrows raised over Maurizio Sarri’s defence, and failure to improve could now see the Blues spend heavily in the summer to improve that area of the squad.

The Breakdown

Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) reports that Chelsea are keen on signing Ajax central defender Matthijs de Ligt in a move that makes perfect sense, though it could be a deal that proves extremely difficult to pull off.

The likes of Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in de Ligt, according to the Spanish outlet, leaving Chelsea with some serious competition if they do intend on making an offer for the 19-year-old.

The Blues, however, must do all they can to see off rival interest; de Ligt is exactly the kind of player they need at the back going forward.

David Luiz has been an absolute shambles in defence at times this season and, at 31 with his contract set to expire in the summer, his long-term future does not look to be anywhere near Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Antonio Rudiger, who started off the season well, has also been poor of late, constantly committing silly fouls and failing to win simple headers.

By no means will de Ligt solve all of the problems at Stamford Bridge, but signing a defender with his potential would definitely be a good start and a step in the right direction for the west London club.

Newcastle: Alex Hurst says Matt Ritchie is an integral part of the team’s spirit

Alex Hurst joined the Pod On The Tyne podcast to talk about Newcastle’s recent rise in form and how integral to the squad Matt Ritchie has been as of late.

Even though we’re only talking about two wins in a row following a whole season of ups and downs, the Magpies truly did look a lot more comfortable in the last couple of clashes.

And Hurst firmly believes that Ritchie is a big part of the reason why that is simply for his charisma and his impact on the team spirit in the Newcastle camp.

Here’s what he said on the Pod On The Tyne podcast (11/3/2020): “He just seems to be such an integral part of the team spirit this season. You look back at previous years when we were really, really bad under John Carver. God if we had Matt Ritchie then yeah, kicking players on the ass, kicking off at people and making them worried about turning up for training.”

The 30-year-old Scotland international has been a big part of the Newcastle family ever since his arrival at the club all the way from Bournemouth back in 2016.

Ritchie has since played 140 games for the Magpies, even scoring a total of 22 goals and assisting further 26 in the process as well. Of course, this season has been a bit of a struggle due to his injury that made him miss 19 games from August until January.

But now that he’s back and kicking people left and right once again, Newcastle are looking even better.

Newcastle fans, do you agree with Hurst’s verdict on Ritchie? Is he really an integral part of your squad? Let us know down in the comments below!

Everton fans want Silva out

[ad_pod ]

Everton fell to their third successive Premier League defeat on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Watford at Vicarage Road. A second half strike from Andre Gray was enough to secure the three points for the Hornets.

In a hostile atmosphere, as the home crowd took aim at their club’s former manager and the Toffees’ current boss Marco Silva, the Merseyside outfit wilted. Everton deserved to lose and look like a side pretty bereft of confidence right now.

The fact that Kurt Zouma was shown a red card after the final whistle only served to compound Silva’s misery.

The pressure has now been heaped onto the Portuguese coach and he’s probably running out of time to turn around his side’s fortunes. Everton fans are certainly beginning to lose patience with him.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

After the final whistle on Saturday, plenty of the Everton faithful took to Twitter to plead for Silva’s reign at Goodison Park to be brought to a swift end.

HYS: Which formation works better for Liverpool?

Last season, Liverpool earned plenty of plaudits for their performances on the pitch.

With Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane firing on all cylinders, the Reds ripped opposition defences apart.

In the current campaign, Jurgen Klopp’s side are well placed to go all the way and win the Premier League title as they currently sit second in the table, two points adrift of Manchester City.

The team remain unbeaten in the top flight, but they have lacked the flair and tenacity that impressed audiences last season.

Since Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, Liverpool have predominantly played in a 4-3-3 formation.

In a handful of games this season, the German coach has experimented with a 4-2-3-1 system.

Against Fulham last weekend, the performance was once again lacklustre, but they managed to earn a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Klopp opted to play Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum in the centre of the park, with Shaqiri, Firmino and Mane sitting in front of them.

Salah lead the line on his own up front, and interestingly, every time that Klopp has selected this system, it has been on home soil.

Taking the club’s season so far into account, what system do you think is best for Liverpool?

Let us know by voting below.

Gomez makes a case to stay as Van Dijk’s centre-back partner at Liverpool

When the transfer window closed, Liverpool fans would have been delighted with the club’s business.

However, some may have felt slightly nervous about the fact that the team’s centre-back partnership was not completely solid.

Towards the end of last season, Dejan Lovren played alongside Virgil van Dijk, but the Croatian international struggles with consistency.

Due to Joel Matip’s injury and the departure of Ragnar Klavan, Joe Gomez was installed in the centre of defence despite the fact that he played at right-back last season.

The young defender held his own in the 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season, but he particularly shone on Monday night when he was tested against Crystal Palace.

Van Dijk was a pillar of strength throughout the 90 minutes, but Gomez was outstanding and equally as comfortable dealing with Palace’s attacks.

He made four clearances in total, and only his centre-back partner forced away the danger more times than the England international.

Gomez also showed strength and power in well-timed tackles and interceptions.

The 21-year-old played out from the back with ease and gave Klopp plenty to think about with regards to his defensive options.

It is only early days in the season, but Gomez showed against Palace that he is worthy of playing more centrally as opposed to in a full-back position.

In Focus: Leeds target Fran Merida could prove to be an underwhelming signing

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Leeds United are considering making a move for Osasuna midfielder Fran Merida, who like recent addition Samu Saiz is playing in the second tier of Spanish football, after sending scouts to watch the former Arsenal man in action.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Leeds United may be top of the Championship table on goal difference going into Tuesday night’s fixtures following an impressive start to the campaign, but it hasn’t stopped Thomas Christiansen looking at players that could potentially improve his squad during the January transfer window and beyond.

The Daily Mail says that scouts from the Yorkshire outfit have been trailing the 27-year-old, who is in his second season with Osasuna following their relegation from La Liga last term, with a view to making a move for the Spaniard.

Merida has certainly had an interesting career having been on the books of Barcelona, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid during his career, but he has failed to settle down at any of those or Braga, Hercules, Atletico Paranaense and Huesca prior to joining Osasuna.

How has he done for them?

Ok, but not brilliant.

Merida, who usually operates as a central or defensive midfielder has made 25 appearances in all competitions since joining Osasuna in the summer of 2016, and he sometimes struggled to make the matchday squad on occasions in La Liga last term.

In 15 outings in the Spanish top flight, he did show his ability with the ball at his feet by successfully completing 12 of the 17 take-ons he attempted in what was a disappointing personal campaign for him and the club.

Would he be a good signing for Leeds?

It’s difficult to say.

Saiz has already made a huge impression at Elland Road and while Merida may have struggled to have a huge impact at Osasuna, there is no reason why he couldn’t with Leeds.

Of course he already has some experience of English football too from his time with Arsenal, and that would stand him in good stead if he did join the Championship outfit during the January transfer window or elsewhere in the future.

That said, the Yorkshire outfit look to be well stocked in the middle of the park right now with Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O’Kane, Ronaldo Vieira and Mateusz Klich, and they also have to start thinking about players that could make the jump up to the Premier League because of their promising start.

It’s hard to believe that Merida is good enough to do that, though.

Wilfried Zaha: The man Spurs need to root themselves in top six

When Wilfried Zaha returned to boyhood club Crystal Palace in summer 2013, most assumed the one-time Manchester United signing would never get another chance at the elite end of the Premier League table.

His Old Trafford tenure certainly didn’t give much evidence otherwise; just two league appearances in six months, before an underwhelming loan spell at relegation-bound Cardiff City and his subsequent return to Selhurst Park. Whatever David Moyes saw in the explosive wideman, he clearly didn’t like, despite his predecessor – the great Sir Alex Ferguson – being convinced enough to spend an eight-figure sum on a then-Championship player just a matter of months prior.

But Zaha returned to Palace with a bang, netting four times and playing a pivotal role in the Eagles recording a tenth-place Premier League finish during the first season of his second spell. His output has remained a continuous subject of debate, but Zaha’s overall form and contributions have been on an upward trajectory since his switch back to south London. Now aged 24 and verging upon traditionally peak years for a winger, the Ivory Coast international appears to be edging back towards the big time – with Spurs repeatedly mooted as potential suitors since last summer. The latest murmurings come courtesy of Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones.

“Wilfried Zaha should have been on the verge of greatness when he joined Manchester United in 2013, but the move did not go to plan, and within two years, he was back at boyhood club Crystal Palace.

“That could have proved a career setback, but he responded with consistent good form for the Eagles, which has put him back in the shop window. Palace know it is only a matter of time before a big offer comes along, and Tottenham Hotspur are set to test his loyalty this summer.”

Dean Jones, Bleacher Report 2017

On the surface, Zaha seems more like a squad addition than a signing who can take Tottenham to the next level. Six goals and seven assists in 26 Premier League outings is a decent return for an attacker plying his trade with a side who’ve been battling relegation all season, but not the kind of return that suggests Zaha would revolutionise Spurs’ starting XI or make them ore clinical in the final third. For starters, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen – Mauricio Pochettino’s four main attacking options – have all scored equal or more goals than him this season, albeit in a considerably more successful team.

Wingers are inevitably judged upon how much they produce, but Zaha’s about much more than that. He’s prepared to roll his sleeves up and commit to the more thankless side of what Premier League wingers are all about; driving their team up the pitch on the counter-attack, drawing fouls to win free kicks in crucial areas of the pitch and closing down opposition full-backs off the ball. Rather tellingly, he’s averaged the most tackles per match – a staggering 2.6 – of any wideman in the division this season.

That suits Mauricio Pochettino’s philosophy of industrious yet creative football perfectly, and the other obvious asset Zaha offers Spurs is his scintillating pace – one of the only weapons the White Hart Lane gaffer lacks in his current arsenal. Eriksen can unlock defences with the ball, Alli can provide goals from midfield and Heung-min Son can glide through tight areas, but no player truly trusted by Pochettino can stretch defences, create width and expose teams so quickly on the break in the same way.

But Zaha’s true value to Tottenham Hotspur may well lay in his performances against elite opposition, something that has become particularly prevalent during the 2016/17 campaign and most recently during a stunning performance to silence table-toppers Chelsea last weekend.

To say Spurs aren’t in second place on merit would be unfair, but it’s certainly not a consequence of their results against top six rivals, winning two and losing three of eight. Chelsea’s record is similar; this title race has been mostly decided by consistency against the rest of the top flight. But with both Manchester clubs growing stronger, Liverpool progressing under Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes in the summer, next term could well come down to who dominates the mini-league at the top of the table.

That could squeeze Spurs out of the picture, but also highlights why Zaha could prove so vital. 43% of his assists this season have come against top six teams, but it’s the consistency he’s shown against such opposition that truly stands out, both with and without the ball. Five successful dribbles per match is a phenomenal return, whilst those 3.3 fouls won double or even triple in importance when put in the context of a top-of-the-table six-pointer – where one set piece expertly delivered into the box can make all the difference.

Likewise, three tackles per match highlights Zaha’s commitment to the cause. In fact, from the seven games in question this season, he’s failed to provide less than two tackles in ninety minutes just once. To give some context, no Spurs player has averaged more than 2.8 tackles this season, whilst the highest return from an attacking player is Dele Alli with 1.4.

Of course, the counter-argument is that the setups of these matches flatter Zaha statistically. Palace average just 48% possession per match and from those seven games against the top six in which Zaha has largely excelled, they’ve averaged 6% less. That gives him more room to operate on the counter and obliges him to make more tackles.

But to say Tottenham won’t find themselves in similar positions next season would be naive – they saw just 45% of the ball during a 2-2 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in January – and it’s Zaha’s industry that could make him such a success at White Hart Lane. We’ve seen Pochettino mercilessly cull countless players who couldn’t meet what he demands in workload; Zaha, on the other hand, has the potential to raise the bar for his accomplices in attack.

“We would love to keep Wilfried. We will sit down and talk to him as soon as we’re safe and I’m very hopeful of doing so”

Palace chairman Steve Parish

Of course, it’s not as simple as Spurs putting some money on the table and Zaha moving from south to north London. Palace have plans to offer him a new contract that would underline his importance to the club. But it feels like Zaha is on the verge of proving Sir Alex Ferguson right and David Moyes wrong by moving back to the top end of the table one way or another. Tottenham would be wise to act on his efficiency against top six opposition before one of their divisional rivals beats them to it.

Five PL fixtures that could decide Tottenham’s top four bid next season

A thrilling 2015/16 campaign for Tottenham Hotspur may have ended in disappointment but there's no doubt the north London club are on the rise.

Mauricio Pochettino has forged a young, energetic and exciting team that only grew in statute and confidence with practically every game last season – and they're now about to undertake a new challenge of competing in the Champions League.

Admittedly, involvement in Europe's top competition could affect the Lilywhites' form domestically and with the move to a new stadium just around the corner, Pochettino may not be able to spend as lavishly as some of his Premier League counterparts this summer.

But the Premier League's official fixture list for 2016/17, released online just moments ago, should give a hint of whether the White Hart Lane outfit will be competing at the top end of the table once again next season.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at FIVE key fixtures that could decide Tottenham's 2016/17 campaign.

SPURS VS LIVERPOOL – August 27th

Should the Premier League return to more normal proceedings next season, it's more than likely Liverpool and Spurs will find themselves in a bar fight for fourth-to-sixth-place. The Reds are improving all the time under Klopp and haven't actually lost to the Londoners in their last seven meetings, so it's crucial Tottenham get a good result at home.

ARSENAL VS SPURS – November 5th

If Spurs are to ever break the curse of finishing behind Arsenal, they need to claim points against their local rivals at the Emirates – which will not only ensure bragging rights but could make the difference between a title bid and a top four push.

SPURS VS CHELSEA – January 2nd

Spurs' record against Chelsea is far from the best and that 2-2 draw at the end of last season has left the London rivalry with a really sour taste. Beating the Blues will undoubtedly have an impact at the top of the Premier League table next season and heel some wounds amongst the fan base. Th

WEST HAM VS SPURS< – 6th May

Losing to West Ham cost Spurs dearly last season and Pochettino will be desperate not to make the same mistake again. Likewise, winning at the Olympic Stadium could well eliminate West Ham from top four contention.

SPURS VS MANCHESTER UNITED – 13th May

This fixture has become a lot closer in recent years with two wins, two draws and two defeats apiece from Spurs and United's last six meetings. During that time, the two clubs have moved in opposite directions so a home win for the Lilywhites could continue to polarise their fortunes.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He will be hoping to enjoy a better time under Reds legend Gerrard than he has done while working with Dyche at Goodison Park. Gray impressed many upon returning to England at Everton in 2021, with six goals recorded in each of his campaigns with the Toffees.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Gray has, however, failed to win over Dyche – leading to him being overlooked this season – and is heading for the exits after posting on Instagram: “Everton fans have always been great with me but it’s so difficult to play for someone who don’t show you respect as a person.”
