Chelsea face competition for 18 y/o prospect

Chelsea have identified Mikayil Faye as a potential target this summer, according to the latest reports.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

The Blues have a busy summer on their hands, with Mauricio Pochettino taking the reins at Stamford Bridge, and several mainstays set to leave the club.

Mason Mount's potential move to Manchester United continues to gather steam, Kai Havertz is reportedly on his way out of the club now as well, with Real Madrid interested in the German, but the two-time Champions League winners are just as busy looking at possible incomings as they are dealing with departures.

Chelsea's Mason Mount

Having pursued Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte, the club recently lost out on the Uruguayan after they were outbid by Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germain.

The 22-year-old was far from the only player they're interested in, though, with Poch's side also linked to a number of other midfielders, including Brighton and Hove Albion's Moises Caicedo and Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga.

Midfield isn't the only area the side is looking to transform, with the latest talent linked to Stamford Bridge being NK Kustosija defender, Mikayil Faye but they face competition from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, the Daily Mail reports.

Will Mikayil Faye join Chelsea?

Despite having made just 13 appearances for his club this season, the 18-year-old centre-back has caught the eye of the Blues, and the club have identified him as a potential signing as they look to build to the future.

While they had the sixth-youngest squad in the Premier League this season, with an average age of 25.6 years old, the club's defence could use an injection of youth, with Thiago Silva (38) and Kalidou Koulibaly (31) playing more minutes than any other defender at the club this campaign.

In fact, Silva was the oldest player to appear in the league this season, and only two players at Chelsea played more than he did this year. It's fair to expect that he won't be able to keep up that level of production as his career winds down, so adding a promising prospect like Faye makes a tonne of sense.

Labelled a 'no-nonsense defender' by Daily Mail reporter Simon Jones for his fierce tenacity at the heart of the defence, the Senegalese prospect has also drawn interest from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, so Chelsea have their work cut out for them if they're to lure the 18-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

Nicknamed 'The Monster' for his intimidating presence at the back, adding Faye would be shrewd business for Chelsea and a huge get as Pochettino gets ready for his debut season at the club.

Piedt among SA players looking to England

Dane Piedt is “considering all options” to further his cricket career in England and would not be averse to a Kolpak deal, according to his agent

Dane Piedt is “considering all options” to further his cricket career in England and would not be averse to a Kolpak deal, according to his agent Francois Brink. Piedt, who has played seven Tests for South Africa, most recently in August, would ideally welcome a stint as an overseas player on the county circuit but is open to other offers as well.”He is looking for a deal but whether that is overseas or Kolpak, we are waiting to see,” Brink told ESPNcricinfo. “Dane is still keen to play for South Africa and if a Kolpak offer came it would require heavy consideration. At the moment, there is nothing on the table and he is fully committed to South Africa.”Should Piedt opt for the Kolpak route, he would be the fourth recent Test cap to pause his international career and head for England after Stiaan van Zyl, Simon Harmer and Hardus Viljoen all signed for counties from the 2017 season. There is talk of at least two other players involved in the South Africa Test set-up being interested in similar deals.A source close to the players revealed that their reasons have as much to do with financial security and limited opportunities at home as they do with the uncertainty over what Brexit – the UK vote to leave the EU – will mean for South Africans looking to work there.”We all know the Rand is declining but it’s when you see players like Dane Piedt or Stiaan van Zyl struggling to get into franchise teams for the domestic T20 because the teams need to meet targets, you understand why some of them are looking to leave,” the insider said. For Piedt, who is non-white, the argument takes a different twist. CSA’s transformation targets stipulate that franchises must field six players of colour, of which three must be black African – effectively leaving only three places for those of mixed race or Indian descent. As a result, Piedt has found it difficult to get game time at the Titans, where he is on loan from the Cobras. Piedt has been a regular in the Cobras’ first-class campaign this year.At national level, the team is required to have an average of six players of colour over the course of a season, of which at least two must be black African. Piedt has lost ground to Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi in the national selectors’ eyes but he has been included in the South African XI to play the touring Sri Lankans in a warm-up match starting this weekend. While transformation is being blamed for the possible talent drain, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith played it down as the reason for players looking elsewhere.”Everyone is probably going to go the transformation angle but CSA have been honest and open about their transformation policies and I actually like that,” Smith said. “I think it’s nice to see that they’ve put themselves out there. Free agency is one of the greatest challenges to world cricket today, with the twenty-over competitions and the opportunities to not only make money but forge careers in other parts of the world.”He urged CSA to do its best to keep hold of the majority of players. “That’s why the culture of South African cricket, the honesty, the value system needs to be really strong and hopefully that you will keep creating dreams that people want to play for the Proteas, that are greater than the monies they can earn elsewhere or the opportunities that lie out there,” he said.CSA has indicated it is not overly concerned about the numbers that may be lost. Haroon Lorgat told the: “We cannot restrain individuals from plying their trade. Over and above our regular reviews of the domestic playing rules and regulations to ensure it is fit for purpose, we will continue to rather focus on making sure that we have the best systems to produce the best cricketers in numbers. We have realised a long time back that the world is a global village with people very mobile. Like in every other country and across every other profession, South African citizens will venture abroad to take advantage of stronger currencies and employment opportunities.”While the Rand has strengthened against the pound, it sits at over R17 at the moment and the lure of building a nest egg is too strong for some players to turn down, especially because they may not have that for much longer. The uncertainty over what changes to the UK’s relationship with Europe will mean for Kolpak signings – which rely on trading agreements with the EU – means that “a lot of players are looking to get in while they still can,” the source said.

Jadeja seven-for seals 4-0 series win

Ravindra Jadeja took seven wickets in an innings for the first time to bowl India to victory over England by an innings and 75 runs to give them a 4-0 series win

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy20-Dec-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:50

Ganguly: Kohli’s captaincy, India’s bench strength stood out

In Mumbai, England had slipped to an innings defeat after batting first and scoring 400. In Chennai, they batted first again and scored 477. At lunch on the fifth day, they were 97 for no loss in their second innings, trailing by 185. This was a flatter pitch than Mumbai, less bouncy and a lot slower. Surely it couldn’t happen again? It did. This time, they lost by an innings and 75 runs, their punishing seven-Test tour of the subcontinent ending at 3.56pm IST, with a draw nine overs away. In Mirpur, they had lost all ten wickets in one session. Here, in less frightening conditions, they lost all ten in 48.2 overs, for the addition of 104 runs, after their openers had added 103.Ravindra Jadeja was India’s match-winner, taking seven wickets for the first time in a Test innings and ten for the first time in a match as well as grabbing two catches, including what was surely the catch of the series. England, though, were their own worst enemy, batsman after batsman getting himself out to hasten India to a 4-0 series win.England still had six wickets in hand when the final session began, and, in Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, batsmen at the crease with three hundreds between them in the series. But Jadeja hounded them, pounding the rough outside their off stump relentlessly. Moeen stepped out, looking to hit him off his length, and only found a leaping R Ashwin at mid-on. Stokes went on the back foot, looking to work him with the turn. The ball stopped and popped to midwicket. This was no longer an entirely flat pitch. It still wasn’t doing much for the bowlers from the Pattabiraman Gate End, but there was something in it now for those approaching from the Anna Pavilion End. England could have negotiated it if the decisions made by their top order hadn’t exposed Nos. 8 and 9 to it. Amit Mishra bowled the No. 8, Liam Dawson, with a googly as he looked to drive against the turn. Umesh Yadav had the No. 9, Adil Rashid, caught off the leading edge, at point, by, who else, Jadeja.Out of the attack for seven overs, Jadeja returned with 12 overs remaining. Stuart Broad saw out the first over of his spell, but could do nothing about the first ball of the second; it jumped out of the rough as he stretched out to defend, and popped up off the glove to leg slip. Three balls later, it was all over. Turn and bounce again, this time to the right-handed Jake Ball. The No. 11 poked, and Karun Nair caught the ball at slip.Broad and Ball, the Nos. 10 and 11, were the only two England batsmen dismissed while trying to defend. It was an indictment of their approach after they had made the best possible start to the fifth day, a wicketless first session. Both sides of lunch, Jadeja had threatened to dismiss Alastair Cook for the sixth time in the series. He produced a loud lbw shout with his first ball of the day, turning the ball past the inside edge when Cook, on 25, pressed forward to defend. India did well not to review umpire Marais Erasmus’ not-out decision: replays suggested the ball struck Cook in line with off stump but would probably have spun past leg stump. Then, on 47, Cook shuffled across his stumps and missed a flick; this time India reviewed, and ball-tracking suggested the ball was turning too much to hit leg stump.Eventually, Cook’s shuffling unease about getting lbw caused him to play at a ball fired a long way down the leg side, and he effectively glanced the ball straight to leg slip. He fell one short of a half-century in his final innings of this long and difficult tour of the subcontinent, and what might possibly be his final innings as England’s captain. It was a typical innings in cussedness if not in length, taking no risks and forcing India to bowl their best balls at him even as he struggled against both Jadeja and Ashwin, who had beaten his outside edge frequently in the first hour. There was a dropped catch too, Ashwin finding dip and turn in the third over of the day to find his outside edge, but not the desired support behind the wicket, the ball bouncing off Parthiv Patel’s gloves.Keaton Jennings had played the spinners well, sweeping and reverse-sweeping confidently and also using his feet to try and get to the pitch and work Jadeja and Amit Mishra with the turn. This enabled him to clip both of them for fours through midwicket, but having done this to go from 50 to 54, he stepped out again, premeditatedly, and Jadeja fired it in low and full. The ball hit Jennings on the front foot, and then bounced up into the face of his bat, and looped back for a simple return catch.Joe Root, England’s best batsman of the series, got himself out six overs later, sweeping unwisely off the line of the stumps. The ball was too full for the shot, and it sneaked under his bat and hit his front pad instead. India reviewed Simon Fry’s not-out decision – a fair call, given it wasn’t immediately apparent whether the ball had straightened enough to hit the stumps – and ball-tracking said it was hitting more than 50% of leg stump.Jonny Bairstow was next to go, perhaps unfortunate to see a perfectly acceptable flick, off a full, leg-stumpish Ishant delivery balloon into the air, the ball perhaps stopping on him. He was even more unfortunate that Jadeja was the fielder sprinting from midwicket towards the square leg boundary with his back to the pitch, looking over his shoulder to keep his eye on the ball. Perhaps no one else on the field would have been able to pull off the catch.

West Indies to host Pakistan in March-May 2017

West Indies will host Pakistan for a seven-week tour beginning at the end of March, comprising two T20Is, three ODIs and three Tests spread across five venues in the Caribbean. It is the first Pakistan tour of the West Indies since 2013 – when Pakistan won a five-match ODI series 3-1 and swept a pair of T20Is – and their first Test series in the Caribbean since a drawn two-match series in 2011.

Pakistan tour of WI 2017

1st T20I, March 31, Port of Spain
2nd T20I, April 2, Port of Spain
1st ODI, April 7, Providence
2nd ODI, April 9, Providence
3rd ODI, April 11, Providence
Tour game, April 15-17, Trelawny
1st Test, April 22-26, Kingston
2nd Test, April 30-May 4, Bridgetown
3rd Test, May 10-14, Roseau

However, there was no announcement regarding any agreement for West Indies to travel to Pakistan to play a pair of T20Is in mid-March, despite recent discussions being held between the WICB and PCB regarding a possible visit to Lahore. Such an agreement would need approval from the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) as well as a security clearance, something that may be problematic after a report issued by FICA regarding player safety and security strongly discouraged players from going to Lahore for the Pakistan Super League final, confirmed for March 5.The Pakistan tour begins in Trinidad & Tobago, where the pair of T20Is will be played at Queen’s Park Oval from March 31. According to multiple sources, the WICB had explored the possibility of staging the T20Is at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, the same Florida venue where West Indies played a pair of T20Is against India in August. Central Broward Regional Park officials confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they had been contacted by the WICB regarding availability for dates toward the end of March but in the end the WICB opted to keep all matches for Pakistan’s tour at Caribbean venues.Guyana will be the host country for all three ODIs beginning on April 7. The ODIs will be crucial heading into the September 2017 cutoff date for 2019 ICC World Cup qualification. Pakistan are currently ranked eighth on the ICC ODI rankings table, the last automatic-qualification spot, with 89 points while West Indies are three points behind them in ninth position with 86 points. If West Indies fail to get into the top eight spots by September, they must participate in the 2018 ICC World Cup Qualifier. That tournament is currently scheduled to be held in Bangladesh, although that may change if Bangladesh – currently ranked seventh with 91 points – gains an automatic qualification.Pakistan will have a three-day warm-up match at Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica starting on April 15 before the first of three Tests begins at Sabina Park on April 22. There is a three-day gap before the second Test begins at Kensington Oval in Barbados on April 30, while the final Test is scheduled to be played at Windsor Park in Dominica starting on May 10. As per the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP), four Tests had been originally slated for this series.Pakistan defeated West Indies in all three formats last year on West Indies’ tour of the UAE. West Indies were in turmoil from the start of the tour after coach Phil Simmons was sacked on the eve of the team’s departure to Dubai. Pakistan went on to sweep both the T20I and ODI series by identical 3-0 scorelines before taking the Test series 2-1. It was Kraigg Brathwaite’s 142 not out followed by a 60 not out that helped West Indies to a five-wicket win in the final Test in Sharjah.

Journalist Discusses Aston Villa’s Move For £48k-A-Week Defender

Aston Villa could potentially sign Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres on the cheap this summer, according to an update from journalist Ryan Taylor.

After Villa after Torres this summer?

This summer promises to be an exciting one at Villa Park, with Unai Emery expected to be backed in the transfer market, bolstering his squad significantly in the process.

Centre-back is one area that Villa could certainly look to strengthen in and Torres is someone who has been linked with a move to the club a number of times in recent months.

The £48,000-a-week Spaniard again enjoyed an impressive season for Villarreal, starting 34 of his side's 38 La Liga matches, and he also featured once for Spain at the 2022 World Cup.

There is nothing to suggest that Villa won't keep looking to bring in Torres before the start of next season, with a fresh update hinting at as much.

pau-torres-villarreal-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

Could Villans sign Torres on the cheap?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Taylor continued to talk up Torres' possible move to Villa, claiming they could sign him for cheaper than the amount in his release clause:

"I think they'll be looking at Torres. Torres has one year left on his contract and a substantial release clause, but I think Villarreal will probably sell for significantly less than that this summer.

"The only thing I'd probably say is that he is a left-sided centre back and they do have Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos at the moment. So I'm not sure whether it is 100% viable, but he's a player highly rated by Emery."

Torres could be the perfect centre-back signing for Villa, coming in as someone with genuine experience at an elite level, and an individual who can take Emery's team to new heights.

The 26-year-old's pedigree is summed up by a tally of 23 caps for Spain, in a squad featuring world-class talent everywhere you look, from Rodri to Pedri, and also 136 outings in La Liga overall.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves has described Torres as "fantastic" in the past, also lauding his "fabulous left foot", and his combination of defensive expertise and quality in possession could help make Villa even more formidable under Emery next season.

More signings would still be needed for that to happen – fitting both him and Tyrone Mings may not be easy either, due to both being left-footed – but the Villarreal man would be an ideal place to start, linking up with his former manager and immediately coming in as arguably the best defender at the club.

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett, who were part of England’s Test squad for the tour of India, have been named in MCC’s squad to face Middlesex, the champion county, in the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2017 English season.Haseeb, who missed the latter stages of the India series after breaking his hand during the third Test in Mohali, is expected to have returned to full fitness by the time the four-day fixture gets underway in Abu Dhabi on March 26.The fixture will once again be played with a pink ball under the lights at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, match conditions that will be of particular significance this year, given that England are due to play their first day/night Test against West Indies at Edgbaston in August.MCC squad to face Middlesex

Haseeb Hameed (Lancashire), Tom Alsop (Hampshire), Sam Northeast (Kent, capt), Ben Duckett (Northamptonshire), Joe Clarke (Worcestershire), Ben Cox (Worcestershire), Lewis Gregory (Somerset), Matt Coles (Kent), Matt Fisher (Yorkshire), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Jack Leach (Somerset)

The MCC side will be captained by Kent’s Sam Northeast, and also includes the England Lions trio Joe Clarke, Tom Alsop and Lewis Gregory.Jack Leach, the Somerset left-arm spinner who was omitted from England’s Test plans this winter after doubts surfaced about his action, has also been selected alongside fellow the Hampshire legspinner, Mason Crane.”It’s special for me to be selected to play for MCC, as someone who came through the MCC Universities scheme,” said Leach. “I’ve got a lot of happy memories of my time at Cardiff, and it played a big part in my cricketing development.”There is a call-up, too, for the promising Yorkshire fast bowler, Matt Fisher, who is about to lead England Under-19s in India.”Having worked closely with the England selectors to assemble this group, I am very pleased with the fantastic talent we have at our disposal,” said John Stephenson, MCC’s Head of Cricket.”Haseeb Hameed, Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett are three of the most exciting young batsmen in the country at the moment, and I’m looking forward to seeing them. We’ve also selected a youthful and varied bowling attack which I’m sure will pose problems for the Middlesex batsmen. The facilities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai remain excellent for first-class cricket and we’re looking forward to a competitive match.”Last season’s MCC team overcame 2015 County Champions Yorkshire by four wickets, thanks to impressive performances from Ian Bell, Jake Ball and James Tredwell.

Leeds Eyeing Summer Move For £28k-A-Week Youngster

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United youngster Amad Diallo on loan this summer, according to a fresh update.

How good is Man United youngster Diallo?

The £28,000-a-week attacker is an exciting prospect at Old Trafford, with a potentially strong career ahead of him, wherever he eventually ends up.

Diallo spent last season on loan at Sunderland and his performances caught the eye, with 14 goals and three assists coming his way in the Championship, and it could be that another temporary move comes his way in 2023/24, in order for him to continue his development.

The 20-year-old could be a future regular at Old Trafford, depending on how much he kicks on in the coming years, and any Championship club would surely be happy to have him.

With Leeds preparing for life back in the second tier, following their relegation from the Premier League last month, it looks as though Diallo has emerged as a summer target for new owners the 49ers Enterprises.

Sunderland loanee Amad Diallo.

Are Leeds keen on signing Diallo this summer?

According to The Mirror, the Whites are "on the trail" of Diallo ahead of a potential loan move this summer, seeing him as an ideal replacement for the likes of Jack Harrison and Wilfried Gnonto, both of whom could move on before the start of next season.

It is stated that United manager Erik ten Hag "plans to take him on the club’s summer tour to the USA", but it could be that he doesn't yet see him as a key part of his plans, therefore paving the way for a short-term exit.

Diallo could be such an exciting signing for Leeds, with his displays for Sunderland last term showing exactly what he is capable of, being hailed as "incredible" by Black Cats hero Luke O'Nien. He has the unpredictability, trickery and end product to immediately make the Whites a potent force in the Championship, and he would help fill the possible void left by Harrison and Gnonto.

Granted, it seems highly unlikely that the Ivorian will be at Elland Road for more than a season, but Leeds needs a quickfire return to the Premier League and the United starlet could be the man who helps inspire them back into the top flight.

Diallo already has three caps and one goal to his name for the Ivory Coast, despite his tender years, while six goals and four assists in just five appearances for United's Under-21s further highlight what a talent he is.

Wolves "Ready To Push" To Sign Coventry’s Gyokeres

Wolverhampton Wanderers are “ready to push” to bring Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres to the Premier League, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Is Viktor Gyokeres leaving Coventry?

The Sky Blues' forward’s contract is set to expire next summer meaning that this window will present Mark Robins with his final big opportunity to cash in on his prized asset, which shouldn’t be too difficult considering that he was his top-performing offensive player last season.

Back in May, TalkSPORT reported that the Old Gold were preparing an approach for the Sweden international, who has had a £25m price tag placed on his head, as Julen Lopetegui looks to bolster his attacking ranks.

On the same day, Football Insider stated that the Molineux outfit were the one suitor trying the hardest to sign the 25-year-old despite interest from the likes of Everton, Burnley and Leeds United, with his club resigned to losing him having failed to achieve promotion to the top-flight.

Are Wolves signing Gyokeres?

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that Wolves are prepared to fight for Gyokeres and are willing to do whatever it takes to secure his services ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. He wrote:

“Viktor Gyokeres future, key hours/days ahead. Decision has not been made by player and his camp — potential free transfer in 2024 being discussed. Coventry owner, asking for huge amount with just 1 year left on contract. Fulham, Wolves, West Ham & Sporting are ready to push.”

Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Should Fosun table a bid for Gyokeres?

Wolves lacked any kind of firepower and were missing a prolific out-and-out centre-forward last season so it’s easy to understand why they want to add to their attacking department, and having been dubbed “unplayable” by his former teammate Maxime Biamou, Gyokeres is 100 per cent a player worth submitting an offer for.

The Building Society Arena talisman clocked up 31 goal contributions (21 goals and ten assists) in 46 Championship appearances during the previous term, with this outstanding form seeing him receive ten man-of-the-match awards, so it really is no surprise that he's in such high-demand.

Gyokeres, who also recorded 191 shot-creating actions – higher than any of his fellow peers – is additionally a versatile operator having been deployed in six various positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even in the midfield, so he possesses all the qualities that would make him the perfect candidate to slot into Lopetegui’s squad.
