Newcastle: Magpies "Remain In Talks" With Axel Disasi

Newcastle United "remain in talks" with Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi over a summer move to the club, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

How much does Axel Disasi earn?

The 25-year-old is currently earning £18,000 per week at Monaco and has matured into an important player who generally walks into the starting lineup week in, week out. Last season, he started an impressive 37 out of 38 Ligue 1 matches, highlighting both his influence at the back, and also his fitness levels and consistency.

Disasi could feel that now is the right time for him to enjoy a fresh challenge, however, and there is plenty of interest in him from Premier League clubs. Newcastle are one of them, seeing the Frenchman as a strong to bring in and make them even more formidable defensively, having only conceded 33 goals in the league in 2022/23.

He still has two years left on his current Monaco deal, but there could well be a temptation from the French side to sell him this summer, in order to receive a big amount of money, rather than a smaller fee in 2024, or even worse, losing him for free 12 months after that.

What's the latest on Axel Disasi to Newcastle?

Taking to Twitter, Romano dropped a brief update on Newcastle's interested in Disasi, claiming that talks are ongoing over the signing, although Manchester United are also in the picture:

"Newcastle and Man United remain in talks for Axel Disasi deal, as reported two weeks ago."

Disasi may not necessarily be a household name compared to some centre-backs across Europe, but he is someone who could be a superb addition at Newcastle, having impressed so much more Monaco.

At 25, he is still relatively young, especially for a player in his position, and he could be viewed as Sven Botman's centre-back partner for the next five or six years, assuming the Dutchman stays put at St James' Park.

Disasi averaged 2.9 clearances per game in Ligue 1 last season, and also completed 84.7% of his passes across eight Europa League appearances, showing that he can impress both in and out of possession. He won 2.6 aerial duels per match in the former, too, with such dominance in the air something that is needed in what is a physical Premier League.

The fact that United are also competing for Disasi's signature is a potential issue, considering their continued reputation as one of the world's biggest clubs, but the days are gone of them having such a big advantage of Newcastle when it comes to signing players, with the Magpies now back in the Champions League and only going from strength to strength.

Joining this exciting project at St James' could appeal to the Monaco ace even more than a switch to Old Trafford, and he arguably has more chance of being a regular for the Magpies, too. Manager Jean-Luc Vasseur has said that the player's "great quality is his intelligence" in the past, further showing what a shrewd addition he could be to Newcastle's back-line.

Man United: Goldbridge drops big Hojlund price tag claim

Mark Goldbridge believes Manchester United will not pay anywhere near the £86m quoted for Rasmus Hojlund, instead constructing a deal worth somewhere around £50m with add-ons.

Is Hojlund joining Man United?

It's no secret that Man United are desperate to sign a new number nine this summer and the man Erik ten Hag is eager to fill the role with is Atalanta's Hojlund.

There had been links with Randal Kolo Muani, links with Victor Osimhen and, of course, links with Harry Kane. However, a mixture of price and availability scuppered any potential deal, which could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Ten Hag.

The Dutch coach is keen to work with Hojlund, as the forward is to work with Ten Hag, and it appears the saga is set to reach a satisfying conclusion for all parties.

One issue in negotiations has been La Dea's large asking price with the Serie A side publicly suggesting they would require a fee of approximately £86m.

However, there have been contrasting reports about the finances involved, with some sources indicating a deal closer to £60m could be enough to sign the Denmark international.

Goldbridge believes this figure will be even lower though, suggesting that United would only be willing to pay roughly £50m plus add-ons.

Speaking on The United Stand, he stated: "I'm going to repeat what we've always said: Atalanta are looking for about £60m. You know, £60m, which is about €67m. Man United are looking to pay between £40-50m. I would suspect the deal would get done for around £50m with add-ons.

"That is not £86m, it's not £80m, it's not even £70m and it's not £60m. We are looking around €60m/€50m, [which is] £50m/£40m with add-ons, and that's what it's always been. So, my only frustration in this deal is that every now and again, you go get a cup of coffee, you check Twitter, and you see some UK source talking about £90m and the fanbase starts panicking."

Goldbridge's optimism is buoyed by the fact that United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Hojlund according to Fabrizio Romano, although he quotes the asking price at around £56-60m.

Hojlund has only enjoyed one season in a top five European league, scoring nine goals in 32 appearances for Atalanta, while also having netted six in six for the Danish national team.

He has been praised for his physicality, pace and technical ability by Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini, who even compared the forward to Erling Haaland.

Who else will United sign?

It appears the next target on Ten Hag's shortlist is a midfielder and more specifically Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan impressed at the 2022 World Cup and helped La Viola reach two finals last season, albeit they lost both 2-1.

He was described as "essential" by former England manager Fabio Capello (via Voetbal) following an impressive World Cup and boasts a great range of passing, a tireless work rate and a unique ability to break up danger.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has suggested that Amrabat has agreed to move to Old Trafford and a deal could be conducted for approximately €30m including add-ons.

If Amrabat were to follow Hojlund to Manchester, then the Red Devils would have completed five signings during the transfer window with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Jonny Evans having already finalised moves.

Liverpool Obsessed With Signing £69m ‘Unsung Hero’

Reports tethering Liverpool's attention to Real Madrid's Federico Valverde are not going away, and Jurgen Klopp could make his move for the Uruguayan dynamo over the coming weeks.

Is Fede Valverde leaving Real Madrid?

Recent rumours from Spain claim that Liverpool are 'obsessed' with the prospect of signing Valverde, and that they are preparing a bid of €80m (£69m) to secure the star's services.

Granted, this seems unlikely with the Reds already completing deals for Alexis Mac Allister (£35m) and Dominick Szoboszlai (£60m), but with Los Blancos' midfield somewhat overloaded, Klopp will be at the forefront of the suitors should he truly be made available.

And with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both heading for the exit at Anfield, Liverpool might be tempted into entering formal negotiations for the 25-year-old, who has been instrumental to the LaLiga giants' success over the past several years.

How good is Federico Valverde?

Liverpool's priority will focus on securing the services of a new first-rate holding midfielder, and while this will take centre stage, Valverde could complete the club's midfield and flourish in the Premier League with his dynamic abilities and unrelenting intensity.

Having made 204 appearances for Real, the 49-cap Uruguay international has plundered 18 goals and 15 assists – with 19 direct contributions coming last term.

Hailed as "untouchable" by manager Carlo Ancelotti one year ago, Valverde has gone from strength to strength and now ranks among the top 7% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 15% for assists and the top 9% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Such a progressive, burgeoning midfielder would provide a fresh dimension to Liverpool's midfield, a cutting edge to unlock the attacking quality of a squad desperate to return to prominence following a fall from grace last season, and he could be the solution to unleashing the full scale of his compatriot Darwin Núñez's talents.

Real Madrid Federico Valverde.

Arriving from Benfica for a club-record £85m last summer, the 24-year-old endured a turbulent ride and was harangued at times for his profligate shooting, having been branded "too wasteful" by club legend Robbie Fowler.

Irrespective of this, he remains a first-rate talent and still ranks among the top 12% of forwards for goals and the top 6% for progressive carries, though he does also rank among the top 1% for non-penalty xG and total shots per 90, which underscores his blunted cutting edge.

The £140k-per-week Uruguayan could yet be refined and shaped into a striker of the highest distinction, however, and with Valverde driving the ball into the final third behind him, the link-up play could prove to be a resounding success.

Indeed, Valverde has gone somewhat under the radar despite revelling in success under Ancelotti's stewardship, with Joe Cole saying last year: "He's standing right at the top of the tree with Bellingham in the young players, and he's on the verge of becoming the best.

"He's box-to-box, he scores goals, he's a technician he was the unsung hero in the final, I thought he was outstanding against Liverpool."

Whether Klopp and co decide to part with a lucrative sum yet again remains to be seen, especially considering the likelihood that the next move will be for a No. 6, but should Valverde arrive, he would undoubtedly be a sensational signing.

Aston Villa Express Interest In 22 y/o "Huge Talent" Ibrahim Adel

Aston Villa have expressed an interest in signing Pyramids FC winger Ibrahim Adel, but there are several other Premier League clubs also vying for his signature, according to a recent report from 90min.

What's the latest Aston Villa transfer news?

Villa have now joined the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby, with the German club set to hold out for a fee of at least £50m to sanction his departure, which means a club-record fee would need to be paid in order to win the race for his signature.

A new winger appears to be one of Unai Emery's transfer priorities this summer, as the Villans have been linked with a number of different options, including Federico Chiesa, with journalist Dean Jones stating the Italian would be an upgrade on Leon Bailey.

Contact was made over a move for Sporting CP winger Pedro Goncalves, however that move now appears to be on the rocks, as the Portuguese side were only willing to sell the 25-year-old if his €80m (£68m) release clause was paid in full.

As such, Villa could now move on to other targets, and they have now been named by 90min as potential suitors for Adel, who has been attracting the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United and Brighton.

There is also interest in the Pyramids FC star from clubs in France, Spain and Germany, but he would prefer to move to the Premier League, where several clubs are waiting in the wings.

The 22-year-old, who is regarded as one of Egypt's brightest young talents, was recommended to Liverpool by Mo Salah last year, but any move was off the table due to the complications of obtaining a work permit.

However, the rules have now been changed, allowing up to two players who would not have previously qualified for a work permit to be signed, potentially opening the door for a move to Villa Park or another English club.

Who is Ibrahim Adel?

The Egyptian is yet to play outside his home country, but he has been very impressive for Pyramids FC over the past few seasons, most notably scoring ten goals and registering one assist in the 2020-21 campaign.

Primarily a left-winger, the Port Said-born attacker is also capable of playing at striker, having scored ten goals in 23 games as a centre-forward throughout his career so far, earning himself a call-up to the Egyptian national side.

Ammar Hamdy of Egypt celebrates scoring their second goal with Ibrahim Adel of Egypt

As such, the winger could be a versatile option for Villa, and he has been praised by Pyramids FC director of football Mahmoud Fathallah, who described him as a "huge talent for us and for Egyptian football".

Of course, it would be a risk to sign a player unproven outside of Egypt, but he has impressed for Pyamids FC, and he could be worth taking a chance on.

However, Villa should still pursue another winger who is more proven at the top level, such as Diaby, who racked up 18 goal contributions in the Bundesliga last season.

South Africa steady themselves after Lord's horror show

South Africa needed a response after their 211-run defeat in the first Test at Lord’s and the memories were put behind them on an evenly-contested opening day at Trent Bridge

The Report by David Hopps14-Jul-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSouth Africa needed a response after their 211-run defeat in the first Test of the series at Lord’s and the memories of their second-innings collapse were put behind them on an evenly-contested opening day at Trent Bridge.Nevertheless, it might have been even better. The loss of four wickets for 56 runs in 15 overs immediately after tea – an interval during which South Africa had been excellently placed at 179 for 2 – was a haphazard period which invited England back into the second Investec Test and rewarded a day in which James Anderson and Stuart Broad, in particular, persisted with an experienced air, drawing help where they could on a slow surface.Anderson became the first Test bowler to reach 300 Test wickets in home Tests, while Broad was the day’s most successful, and insistent, bowler with 3 for 47. As their Test tallies build, and their status as one of England’s most prolific fast-bowling pairs is further implanted, their respective Test averages remain locked around 28.5 as if somehow it has been pre-ordained that it must always be this way.England’s optimism had been tested in an afternoon session in which Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock took command on an easy-paced pitch, gambolling along at more than four an over as they added 123 between lunch and tea. If Amla possessed the munificence of a warm sun, uncluttered by clouds, alongside him de Kock, promoted to No. 4, was as playful as a sunbeam dancing upon a car windscreen. That sunbeam disappeared instantly after tea – de Kock, on 68, chopping at a length ball from Broad and depositing it into the hands of Alastair Cook at first slip. Amla seemed to have settled back into his orderly routine, but on 78 he succumbed to Broad, too, as a top-edged pull sailed to Mark Wood to deep square leg: a shot where he had been a little flighty more than once.Nobody can fairly claim to have Amla’s measure, but Broad can claim it more than most: he has now dismissed him eight times in Tests and no bowler has achieved as many.Du Plessis and Temba Bavuma both fell to wicketkeeper catches off Ben Stokes and, if Bavuma’s departure was routine, a comfortable catch as he failed to withdraw the bat, the manner of du Plessis’ dismissal will have delighted the England dressing room, and no-one more so than their wicketkeeping coach Bruce French.Du Plessis imagined his review would be successful, knowing the ball had struck his hip, but there was also the merest hint of a glove – umpire Paul Reiffel having made either a brilliant or fortunate decision – and so attention turned to the catch itself, a leaping affair down the leg-side as Bairstow clutched the ball one-handed. He pulled off a similar catch to dismiss Bavuma at Lord’s and in both cases displayed a spring and lightness on his feet that would have been unimaginable a year ago.Vernon Philander drives through the covers during second half-century of the series•Getty ImagesAfter South Africa’s extravagance, came a recovery from the sixth-wicket pair Vernon Philander and Chris Morris, who added 74 to take them to stumps at 309 for 6, and survived the second new ball in the process, the last delivery of the day falling mockingly short of England’s captain Joe Root at second slip. Philander’s flowing off drives stressed that he is a batsman of some quality, one who should not regard his seventh Test half-century as the height of his ambition.Anderson’s 300th Test wicket in England had been a statistical landmark in an otherwise mournful start to the Test with only 23 overs possible on a blustery morning briefly interrupted by a flurry of rain. He wangled the wicket of Dean Elgar, drawing him into an insecure drive at a slightly wide one and winning his wicket courtesy of a fine, diving catch to his right by Liam Dawson at backward point. Elgar, who can be a bit of a stodge when conditions are testing, would have berated himself for that. There was uncertainty for Heino Kuhn, too, who took a blow on the back of the helmet in Wood’s first over. Wood, displaying a hostility at the start of his first spell that he did not quite sustain, beat Kuhn for pace with his fourth delivery and caused the batsman to turn away and take the blow. Earlier, he had also taken a blow on the bottom hand from Broad, discomfort aplenty which was sure to ginger up England’s seamers. The loss of only one wicket by lunch represented decent damage limitation.Kuhn represented England’s one wicket in the afternoon, a wicket well won as he was subjected to a succession of induckers by Broad, in particular, and eventually dragged one on.Less impressive for England was their wasting of two reviews, on either side of lunch, in their anxiety to make progress. They reviewed a rejected lbw appeal against Amla, on 14, the batsman surviving survived courtesy of an inside edge and a front pad outside the line, neither of which had not entered the computation of a clearly enthusiastic bowler, Stokes. Broad, also voracious when it comes to reviews, then lost a review because the ball was too high.Joe Root, a new captain, looked somewhat biddable as both reviews fell on stony ground. On the second occasion, his predecessor in the job, Cook, offered a few quiet words alongside him at slip. Cook might have been just expressing relief that the decision was no longer his, but if he was advising Root to temper first-term ambition with realism it would have been no bad thing.Amla and de Kock dominated the afternoon. Amla started uncertainly and Anderson, in particular, taunted his outside edge and, on 37, forced an edge which fell agonisingly short of Root at second slip.Amla ticked along with leg-side nudges but saved his biggest shots for the square boundaries on the off side. He reached his half-century with a blissful straight six against Liam Dawson, who entered the attack 10 overs before Moeen Ali. A pecking order designed to take the pressure off Moeen might yet put the pressure on England and it could remain a talking point of the summer.De Kock’s insatiable appetite for adventure has made South Africa reluctant to card him in the middle order but they were rewarded for their boldness. Many will regard his promotion as unwise – comparable perhaps to fielding the great Australian wicketkeeping No. 7 Adam Gilchrist up the order – and would certainly argue the case for him to come in behind du Plessis at five. But, for all the misadventure of his get-out shot, there is a roundness to his game that suggests he has the aptitude to cope and his four boundaries in quick succession off Dawson and Wood helped seize the initiative.Anderson’s was not the only statistic of the day. Amla had gone past 8,000 Test runs and another landmark was also marked as the impending retirement of Henry Blofeld, the long-serving Test Match Special commentator, was marked by his very own bus – a green one named in his honour which one hopes will draw highly-coloured bursts of adjectival delight from generations to come. There was also a replica to go with it, presented no less by the Sheriff of Nottingham – a local councillor of upstanding repute, rather than the lecherous Robin Hood villain.

Wood finds form – but is it too late for England?

ScorecardMark Wood proved his fitness for the Test series against South Africa by taking 5 for 54 before rain halted the second day’s play in Durham’s Specsavers County Championship match at home to Worcestershire. The paceman took the visitors’ final two wickets with the new pink ball, but not before they had established a lead of 170.Brett D’Oliveira completed his century and Moeen Ali made 58 in Worcestershire’s total of 367.Prior to England one-day duty, Wood took 3 for 206 in two matches for Durham at the start of the season as he felt his way back from ankle surgery.Looking sharper now, he had already taken three of the wickets when Worcestershire resumed on 213 for four. He completed his haul by knocking out Ed Barnard’s off stump with his seventh delivery with the new ball before forcing last man Josh Tongue to fend a catch to short leg.It was his penultimate, perhaps even his last, bowl before England’s selectors meet to select the squad for the first Test against South Africa at Lord;s next week. The squad is due to be announced on Sunday.Wood said: “The pink ball held together well but it seemed to go soft quickly, so I think the jury is still out. Moeen Ali said he struggled to time it because it wasn’t coming off the pitch. Getting wickets is a big confidence boost for me. My rhythm wasn’t there in early season, but I’m fine now.”There were four wickets for off-spinner Ryan Pringle, who had been treated with the utmost respect by Glamorgan last week but found himself under attack this time, conceding 73 in 12 overs. In gloomy conditions, with the floodlights again on from the 2pm start, runs came briskly as Moeen played in carefree style.Mark Wood made his first big Championship contribution of the season•Getty Images

When Durham posted a short extra cover he chipped Chris Rushworth over the fielder, but was fortunate as two inside edges took him to 50 off 59 balls.D’Oliveira, who resumed on 91, drove Rushworth for three through extra cover to complete his 159-ball century with 15 fours and a six then top-edged Ben Stokes’s second ball of the day over the wicketkeeper for another boundary. Stokes finished with none for 80.When Pringle was introduced D’Oliveira hit him for four to mid-wicket then lifted a no-ball over long-on for six – counting eight – before whacking a full toss straight to cover to depart for 122.Following the stand of 130, Moeen swiftly followed, missing a sweep in Pringle’s next over to fall lbw.Three wickets had gone down for six runs when George Rhodes sat back to cut and edged to wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter.Ross Whiteley was on one when he drove Pringle for a straight six as he and Ben Cox stopped the rot with a stand of 73.In Pringle’s final over before the new ball was due Whiteley tried to heave him over mid-wicket and was bowled for 43. Wood did the rest, leaving Cox unbeaten on 32.

Sunderland Could Sign £3m Ross Stewart Replacement

Sunderland appear to be homing in on Everton's Tom Cannon as they ramp up their search for another striker ahead of the start of the new Championship campaign.

Who are Sunderland's strikers?

Bringing in replacements for Ellis Simms and Amad Diallo was always going to be a priority for Tony Mowbray this summer, with the pair netting 20 goals between them during the regular league campaign last time out.

Simms returned to parent club Everton prior to joining Coventry City on a permanent deal, while Diallo is now back with Manchester United and will not be returning to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have added Luis 'Hemir' Semedo to their squad this window, but the youngster did not play any senior football during his time with Benfica.

Throw in uncertainty over the future of Ross Stewart, who has been strongly linked with second-tier rivals Southampton, and it is clear that another player who can find the net is required by Mowbray.

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, via his Patreon page, Everton are willing to let Sunderland target Cannon leave on loan this coming campaign, though the Black Cats are said to be lining up a cash offer should Stewart leave in the coming weeks.

How many goals has Tom Cannon scored?

It has previously been reported that Sunderland are hopeful a £3m offer plus bonuses would be enough to tempt Everton to cash in on Cannon, who has made three senior appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

The 20-year-old has spent more than a decade on Everton's books, but it may well be that his future lies elsewhere, with the likes of Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday also said to be eyeing up the youngster.

It was with Preston that Cannon made a name for himself last season when scoring eight goals and assisting one more in 20 Championship appearances.

The 0.65 goals per 90 minutes Cannon registered in the second tier last season, as per FBref, was bettered only by Stewart (0.86) among Sunderland players.

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

Even when not scoring, the Republic of Ireland international still proved to be a nuisance for opposition defenders. Indeed, Hull City boss Liam Rosenior hailed Cannon as "outstanding" and "one of the best players we've played against by far."

Cannon only spent four months at Deepdale, and he will no doubt hope to better his eight-goal tally across the duration of an entire season should he again drop down a level.

On top of both being able to find the net regularly, there are other similarities between Cannon and Stewart. For example, they scored from 0.17 and 0.19 of their shots last season respectively, while they completed 64.5% and 68% of their passes.

Stewart is a lot better than Cannon in the air, winning 48.9% of his aerial duels compared to the Everton starlet's 32.1%, but the latter is better at beating an opponent as he averaged 1.22 successful take-ons per 90 to Stewart's 0.60.

Ultimately, Sunderland's decision on whether to sell Stewart this summer before he becomes a free agent next year could come down to Cannon's availability. If they can make a nice profit and bring in a player of very similar quality, it would be good business indeed.

West Ham: Conor Gallagher "in limbo" amid interest

West Ham United have seen their £40m bid for Conor Gallagher rejected by Chelsea with the player left "in limbo" at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Dan Bardell.

Is Gallagher joining West Ham?

With Declan Rice's move to Arsenal now complete and £105m pocketed, David Moyes now must turn his attention to how he is going to replace his former captain.

West Ham's midfield options without Rice look threadbare, especially in deeper roles, with Tomas Soucek and Flynn Downes the only traditional first-team central midfield options.

With European football again next season, the Irons will need to bring in several players in the middle of the park, one of whom could be Chelsea's Gallagher.

The Hammers are admirers of the 23-year-old who featured 35 times for Chelsea in the Premier League last season, having now submitted a £40m bid for the England international.

The bid was swiftly rejected and at present it appears that Mauricio Pochettino considers Gallagher part of his plans for next season, although an increased West Ham bid might change his stance.

However, journalist Bardell doesn't see where Gallagher would naturally fit in Pochettino's new-look Chelsea team and formation, suggesting the player is in "limbo" at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Bardell said: "It's a weird one isn't it because Chelsea aren't blessed with an abundance of central midfielders at the moment. From looking at pre-season and speaking to Chelsea fans, it's clear that Poch is going to play this 4-2-3-1 [formation], which I would say leaves Gallagher a little bit in limbo because he's not really a number six, and I wouldn't say he's creative enough to be a number ten either.

"His best season was at Crystal Palace playing as a number eight and he had a really, really good season. I think it maybe gets forgotten a little bit how good he was at Crystal Palace."

He added: "So, Gallagher's a little bit in limbo. I feel a bit sorry for him because it feels like every window his future is a little bit up in the air. We talked about him a lot in January when Chelsea were signing all those players. He's ended up staying and, to be fair, he did play a lot of football in the second half of the season.

"But I just think if Gallagher's going to reach his potential and be allowed to do the things that he's good at he needs to go somewhere permanently."

The indefatigable midfielder was not shy of putting in the hard yards last season but ultimately struggled for consistency, frustrating fans with subpar performance levels under Graham Potter and Frank Lampard.

Pochettino may be able to revive Gallagher's Chelsea career but the arrival of Enzo Fernandez in January and the potential arrival of Moises Caicedo this summer means his game time might be limited under the Argentinian coach.

How good is Gallagher?

During his loan spell at Palace in the 2021/22 season, Gallagher frequently showcased his best attributes as a box-to-box midfielder capable of scoring and creating in the opposition penalty area.

Gallagher scored eight goals and made another four in 39 appearances for the Eagles, while also diligently performing his defensive duties on a weekly basis.

His work ethic and persistence has never been in question, but the same quality he showed at Selhurst Park didn't transfer over to Stamford Bridge.

Last year he managed a comparatively poor combined four goals and assists in 45 games for the Blues, often looking nervous and uncomfortable in possession, as well as picking up nine yellow cards and one red.

Gallagher may yet have a future at the top level if he can rediscover his Palace form, but Pochettino could be tempted to cash in on the midfielder while interest in him is so high.

Tottenham: Postecoglou could be about to repeat Richarlison howler

Tottenham Hotspur supporters are likely to be facing an anxious few weeks ahead of the September deadline, with uncertainty growing regarding Harry Kane's future at N17.

Having been the Lilywhites' main man for almost a decade – netting a record total of 280 goals in that time – the 29-year-old looks set for pastures new with just under a left on his existing deal, with speculation rife that the England captain will be on his way to Bayern Munich.

As the Telegraph's Miguel Delaney recently noted, a departure from north London now seems 'more realistic' for the long-serving striker, ensuring that Ange Postecoglou's side are set to be forced to consider possible replacements over the coming weeks.

Who will replace Kane at Tottenham?

One name that has been suggested of late is Lille ace, Jonathan David, with reports in France earlier this month having claimed that the Canada international is being eye up by the Premier League outfit, with a fee of around €60m (£51m) having been suggested.

harry-kane

While the former Gent hotshot is coming off the back of another productive season in Ligue 1 – having scored 24 league goals in the 2022/23 campaign – there are concerns as to whether he is the man that Tottenham are in need of to fill Kane's goalscoring void.

That is the view of journalist Paul Brown, at least, with the respected insider telling Football FanCast that the 23-year-old is not of the same ilk as the long-serving marksman:

"Spurs aren't going to be signing a 30 goal a season striker to replace Harry Kane. It's just not possible this window. So, Jonathan Davies is a very talented player, if he comes in and scores some goals for them, I think everyone will be reasonably happy. He's not in Kane's class. I wouldn't expect him to reproduce what Kane did."

Tottenham's succession plan with regard to Kane has already gone somewhat awry following the dismal start to life at N17 for £60m man, Richarlison, with Daniel Levy facing a repeat of that transfer howler if he is to snap up David this summer.

How good is Jonathan David?

It would appear that despite David's scoring heroics at Lille – for whom he has netted 58 times in 136 games across all fronts – there are those that share Brown's concerns regarding his talent, with journalist Dean Jones revealing that the 42-cap hitman had recently failed to impress watching Manchester United scouts.

The north Londoners will no doubt be keen not to spend big once again on a forward who is not yet a proven goalscoring option, with the case of Richarlison needing to be a warning sign for future, high profile additions.

The Brazilian notably enjoyed an almost identical record at Everton to what David has achieved in France, having scored 53 goals in 152 games for the Toffees prior to leaving Goodison Park last summer.

That respectable scoring return has not been replicated in the capital, however, with the 26-year-old notably scoring just one league goal last season, having been criticised by pundit Gabby Agbonlahor for having "no standout attributes".

With Richarlison having found the transition from Merseyside to north London rather difficult, it remains to be seen what David would be able to achieve after leaving France for England, with it no small feat trying to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Of course, as Brown alluded to, it may prove rather impossible for anyone to try and replicate Kane's stellar impact in a Tottenham shirt, although, having been stung by Richarlison's costly capture, Levy must be cautious before splashing the cash on another expensive gamble.
