Everton Bid For Che Adams: Update From Southampton Reporter

After struggling for goals last season, Everton are reportedly looking to sign a forward this summer, potentially giving Sean Dyche the forward he needs to lead the line.

Last season, the Toffees scored the second least number of goals in the Premier League, with their tally of 35 only better than Wolverhampton Wanderers' total of 31.

The Merseyside club are working on a solution to their problems, however.

What's the latest on Che Adams to Everton?

Providing an update on Everton's pursuit of Che Adams, Jacob Tanswell and Paddy Boyland of The Athletic have reported that the Toffees have made a £12m bid for the Southampton striker.

Tanswell revealed noise from the Saints end is that the offer is reasonable: "Everton have made a £12m offer to sign Che Adams from Saints. Adams is in final year of his deal with no extension discussed. #NFFC & #afcb have shown interest but #EFC are long-standing admirers & put in a bid viewed as reasonable."

The Merseyside club look set to win the race to sign the Scotland international, who has also reportedly attracted interest from Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth this summer.

Adams, of course, has been busy getting off to a flying start in the Championship, scoring twice in as many games for the Saints, who will no doubt be desperate to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

They may have to do it without their star striker, though, as the end of the transfer window looms.

Should Everton sign Che Adams?

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Everton's goal scoring problems were exposed for all to see on the opening day of the season, as Fulham defeated the toothless Toffees 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Given Dominic Calvert-Lewin's consistent injury problems, too – the England international missed 14 games last season – signing a striker is imperative for Everton's top flight status. And that's where Adams could come in. The 27-year-old is Premier League proven, making him an ideal option to provide support to fellow new arrival Youssef Chermiti.

In the last campaign, even as Southampton suffered the heartbreak of relegation, Adams scored 10 goals in all competitions, which would have made him Everton's top goal scorer.

Even as his future remains undecided, too, the forward's attitude has not changed, resulting in praise from Saints manager Russell Martin, who said, via The Irish News: "The hardest decision for the team was to decide which one (striker) we played, I think we can get both on the pitch as well. They both got a goal and the way Che reacted to not playing was amazing – brilliant energy and so respectful.

“There was a lot of noise around him, we turned down a bid for him a couple of weeks ago and nothing has happened since. The way he dealt with that is amazing. He got a nice reception getting off the bus from Sheffield Wednesday fans, so for him to score I am delighted.”

Statistically speaking, too, Adams would be an instant upgrade on Neal Maupay.

According to FBref, the Scottish forward made more progressive passes and carries, enjoyed better take-on success, and was dispossessed fewer times throughout last season.

Every way you look at it, Adams seems like a player who would improve Dyche's side, and potentially steer them away from the relegation scrap this season. With their £12m bid reportedly deemed reasonable, we may well see the Southampton man make the move before the window slams shut.

Phil Hay: Leeds disappointed with how £1m signing has turned out

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has not managed to reach the levels that the club "hoped he would when they first signed him" due, in part, to the "way it's been" at the club, claims The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Leeds United news – Joe Gelhardt

It has been a tough couple of years for the Peacocks. After managing to stave off relegation by the skin of their teeth in 2022, the club ultimately succumbed to the drop last season for a multitude of factors, including poor decision-making from the club's ownership.

The prospect of life in the second tier has prompted an exodus of sorts as several players who couldn't keep the club in the Premier League have left to find top-flight football elsewhere.

However, one of those who looks set to stay with the club is youngster Gelhardt, and following a string of injuries to the senior forwards, he has now found himself much closer to regular starts than perhaps he was even expecting.

Daniel Farke put him in his starting eleven for The Whites' EFL Cup game against Shrewsbury on Wednesday night, and despite a rocky first half, he repaid his gaffers' faith by scoring the side's equalising goal.

Speaking after the game, the German was very honest about the situation, saying:

"It's always important to count on the young products out of the academy. What I like a lot about him is he totally identifies with the club.

"Yesterday perhaps there are some errors in his game where he can improve, he knows this, and we're speaking quite honestly and working quite hard in training about it. He needs to step up in a few areas, but what I like is he puts a shift in.

According to The Athletic's Phil Hay, the feeling that the energetic forward needs to improve in certain areas – whilst still having genuine talent – is echoed by many at the club.

He explained the situation on The Square Ball podcast YouTube channel, saying:

"Another really talented player Gelhardt but someone who just, and I think as much as anything because of the way it's been at Leeds, just hasn't been able to follow what would have been the development plan for him.

"I don't think anybody at Leeds would pretend that where he is now is where they hoped he would be when they first signed him back in that summer after promotion."

How old is Joe Gelhardt?

Born May 4th, 2002, in Liverpool, the 21-year-old has struggled during his time in West Yorkshire, scoring just three goals and providing four assists in 42 appearances for the club – granted, most of those were off the bench, but it's still not good enough.

His underlying numbers from the last year of football – mostly from his time with Sunderland – are reasonably impressive, however, and suggest that at Championship level, he could be a valuable player for Farke.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across what it defines as the next best eight competitions, he sits in the top 1% for blocks, the top 2% for tackles, the top 6% for pass completion, the top 8% for assists, the top 11% for progressive passes and the top 16% for shot-creating actions, all per 90.

Sunderland forward Joe Gelhardt.

It was towards the final games of the 2021/22 season that he was able to show glimpses of his quality to Premier League viewers, with then-boss Jesse Marsch describing him as "incredible" following a performance against Brighton & Hove Albion.

While he might've scored less than he would've liked for Sunderland last season, he still showed moments of brilliance along the way, with James Hunter of the Chronicle describing his performance against Huddersfield Town as 'excellent.'

Ultimately, Hay's observation that Gelhardt has failed to live up to the club's expectations of him so far certainly seems accurate. However, there is still a talented player in there, and given a chance, he could prove his worth in the Championship this year.

Southee out of first Test, Matt Henry picked in XI

Matt Henry was picked over Lockie Ferguson, who had been called up as cover last week for Tim Southee

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Nov-2017New Zealand have picked Matt Henry as a replacement for Tim Southee, who is expecting the birth of his child, in the XI for the first Test against West Indies in Wellington, which starts from Friday. Henry was picked over Auckland fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, although captain Kane Williamson admitted the team management had considered the prospect of selecting Ferguson, who had been called up as cover for Southee last week. New Zealand had also added George Worker to their ranks once Southee’s unavailability was confirmed, although Worker does not find a place in the XI. The home team will have only one debutant on Friday, as Tom Blundell steps into the wicketkeeper’s slot in place of the injured BJ Watling.New Zealand XI for first Test

Kane Williamson (captain), Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell, Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

Henry last played a Test for New Zealand against South Africa in March this year, taking five wickets in the game.”He’s been playing well for a long time and hasn’t had the opportunities that he’s deserved. He’s a different bowler to Lockie and has been bowling with good pace, does tend to move the ball well and it’s exciting for Matt,” Williamson said. “He’s been waiting for an opportunity and doing all the right things, and performed well in our last Test match. He was outstanding.”Williamson said the team had considered the option of picking Ferguson, who has shown great form in domestic cricket over the last month.Ferguson took a 12-for against Otago in a Plunket Shield fixture and then picked up seven wickets for New Zealand A in the tour match against the West Indians, including a five-for in the first innings.”We did think about it. You’re always looking at the balance of your attack. Lockie’s been playing superbly well and he’s a really exciting talent. It’s always a tough decision.”Uncapped wicketkeeper Tom Blundell is also set to make his debut after he was added to the squad as BJ Watling’s replacement. “Closer to the time, like Thursday, I’d probably get a few more nerves,” Blundell said. “At the moment, I’m just treating it like another game, as cliched as it sounds.”On Wednesday, New Zealand had added Worker to the Test squad for the first time, on the basis of his first-class form. In nine first-class matches this year, Worker has scored 737 runs at an average of 49.13. He has not yet represented New Zealand in Tests, but has played six limited-overs international matches. He made his debut in a T20 against Zimbabwe in October 2015.”Obviously there are things more important than cricket and we support Tim and his decision to stay with his family right now,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “George will join the Test squad for the first time on the back of his form in First Class cricket over the past couple of seasons.”Coming off a series in Zimbabwe that was played primarily on slow pitches, West Indies have practiced with just the solitary warm-up game. Three days ahead of the first Test on December 1, the Basin Reserve surface in Wellington was covered with grass, almost indistinguishable from the rest of the outfield.*0355 GMT. Everton Could Sign ‘Electric’ £22m Calvert-Lewin Partner

Everton Director of Football Kevin Thelwell is believed to be strongly considering a late swoop to complete the club's attack this summer.

Youssef Chermiti has been signed for £15m from Sporting Lisbon, but is inexperienced and only 19-years-old, while dynamic forward Arnaut Danjuma has also been secured on a season-long loan.

The Premier League club finished 17th last term as the second-lowest scorers, but such subpar cutting edge could be transformed with the signing of Patson Daka.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

According to Football Transfers, the Toffees are 'strongly considering' a move for a Leicester City player, who suffered relegation from the English top-flight with the Foxes this year after Everton's final-day victory over Bournemouth.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

That happens to be the exciting Patson Daka. He only signed for his current outfit from RB Salzburg for £22m in 2021, and it is no surprise that the attacker is leaning toward an exit this summer given his array of qualities.

The player is now valued at £17m, as per Football Transfers.

How good is Patson Daka?

Having only scored 15 goals and supplied eight assists from 74 matches for Leicester, Daka did not live up to the same prolific heights in Austria that saw him plunder 27 goals from 28 league matches for the imperious Bundesliga champions.

While he has not quite emulated his former feats on English soil, the Zambian forward remains a slippery figure with "electric pace" and a "ruthless" approach to his attacking output, as described by journalist Ryan Taylor.

Despite his down-swing in direct contributions – and peripheral role, starting just 13 Premier League matches last term – the 35-cap international still ranks among the top 2% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 16% for tackles, the top 5% for interceptions and the top 10% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

patson-daka-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

The defensive metrics are likely a big reason behind Everton's supposed interest, with manager Sean Dyche preferring to implement a direct, defensive style, and his creativity and 'electricity' could prove to get the best out of the struggling Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 26-year-old Englishman has been hampered by consistent injury problems over the past few years, missing 46 matches of competitive action since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, and while he has scored 60 goals from 209 outings for the Goodison Park side, he clinched only two from 18 matches last year.

The 6 foot 2 marksman, who utilises his aerial dominance to great effect, ranking among the top 8% of forwards for aerial wins per 90, has undergone a 'factory reset' this summer as he strives to rekindle the form that saw him earn 11 England caps – scoring four goals – and be hailed as a "monster" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Daka's creativity and pace could open up the field of play and provide Calvert-Lewin with the perfect strike partner, with the differing skill sets perhaps blending together to finally restore some of the panache to the Toffees frontline, in what could be a pivotal moment for the club as Dyche looks to navigate away from the danger area this year.

Sunderland: Mowbray Can Find Simms 2.0 In Swoop For 6 ft 1 Whiz

An update has emerged on Sunderland and their plans to add another centre-forward to their squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Sunderland transfer news?

According to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are 'pursuing' a swoop to sign Jay Stansfield from Premier League side Fulham.

The report claims that Tony Mowbray and Kristjaan Speakman are eyeing up a loan deal for the number nine to bolster their forward options.

Fellow Championship teams Queens Park Rangers and Millwall have also been named as interested suitors, which means that the club are facing stiff competition to secure the talented youngster's signature.

How good is Jay Stansfield?

Mowbray could land the club's next Ellis Simms by securing a deal for the 20-year-old striker as he could make the step up to Championship football after an impressive spell in League One.

Stansfield went on loan to Exeter in the third tier last term and caught the eye with nine goals and seven assists in 28 starts, which means that he averaged a goal contribution every 1.75 starts.

Simms enjoyed an excellent time on loan at Blackpool in League One prior to his move to Sunderland as he scored ten goals and assisted one in 19 starts – an average of one every 1.73 starts.

After a stint at Hearts in Scotland, the then-Everton finisher moved to the Stadium of Light and impressed last season with seven goals and two assists in 14 Championship starts before being recalled in January.

Stansfield could follow in his footsteps by taking his game to the next level in a move to Wearside after an excellent level of production in League One.

Fulham striker Jay Stansfield.

Ross Stewart (ten) is the only current Sunderland player who scored more than nine league goals and only Jack Clarke (12) managed more than seven assists, which shows how impressive the youngster's displays were last term.

Fulham boss Marco Silva claimed that the 6 foot 1 whiz became stronger and developed as a player during his spell at Exeter, which suggests that he could now be ready to take the next leap in his development.

The 20-year-old marksman's form for the Cottagers at youth level suggests that there is a prolific centre-forward to be unearthed there as he racked up a staggering 38 goals and seven assists in 49 U21 and U18 matches combined.

Therefore, the England U20 international has the potential to be a fantastic scorer for Sunderland if he is able to push on and improve upon his performances for Exeter. He now has experience of playing first-team football week-in-week-out and could use that to thrive for the Black Cats.

Stansfield, whose runs were hailed as "powerful" by journalist Josh Bunting, is yet to prove himself at Championship level but neither had Simms when he arrived on Wearside on loan from a Premier League side, which is why he could be the next version of the now-Coventry ace.

It would be a gamble from Mowbray but one that has the potential to result in a huge pay-off for Sunderland if the exciting talent is able to hit top form and make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch.

Everton ‘Evaluating" Move For "Immaculate" 23 y/o Dynamo

Everton are interested in signing Brazilian winger Tete this summer after he impressed in spells on loan with Leicester City in the Premier League last season.

What's the latest on Tete to Everton?

That's according to transfer insider Rudy Galetti – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – who has stated that the 23-year-old is considering a move to Goodison Park following the club's interest, though he is attracting attention elsewhere too.

Galetti said:

“Tete from Shakhtar Donetsk is another name under discussion. His entourage is offering him around Europe and Everton are evaluating the moves to make. Youssef Chermiti from Sporting is a leading into finalisation and is a shot for the future. Over the weekend, he should do his medical visits at the club.”

Tete is believed to have terminated his contract with Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk and, as such, could represent an excellent and shrewd piece of business for Sean Dyche's side.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

Only Wolverhampton Wanderers finished with fewer goals in the 22/23 Premier League season, and while Tete suffered relegation with the Foxes this year, he could make a marked impact on Everton's future fortunes.

How good is Tete?

Leicester completed the signing of Tete on a six-month loan deal in January and while the player started well, scoring a goal on his Premier League debut as the Foxes dismantled Aston Villa 4-2, he failed to add to the tally.

He did complete 77% of his passes, averaging 1.2 shots per game and completing 67% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore, which illustrates the impact he could have on an Everton outfit yearning for a progressive, forward-thinking force.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 26% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 25% for progressive carries, the top 23% for tackles and the top 27% for interceptions per 90.

While said metrics aren't the most striking, they highlight his all-encompassing skill set that could be nurtured and used as a framework at Goodison Park, with the opportunity to cement a regular starting berth as one of the Toffees' centrepieces surely an arresting element.

The "hurricane" – as he has been described by Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin – is a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm, with a fleet-footed stride to faze the opposition in their defensive objective.

Crystal Palace'sWilfriedZaha

FBref lists Wilfried Zaha as a comparable player to the 5 foot 9 dynamo, and given the Crystal Palace legend's talismanic career at Selhurst Park, Tete could emulate his positional peer with Everton and provide Dyche with his own version.

Zaha has recently signed for Turkish giants Galatasaray on a free transfer after making 458 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 90 goals and supplying 76 assists, and departing as a revered figure, he has been dubbed "electric" and a "complete player" by Neil Warnock.

The 30-year-old ranks among the top 30% of attacking midfielders and wingers for goals, the top 22% for successful take-ons and the top 29% for interceptions per 90, and again, while these are not the most impressive rankings around, he remains a first-class ball-carrier and makes an impact that falls outside the conventions of direct goal contributions.

Everton need to rekindle their offensive fluidity and after selling Richarlison and Anthony Gordon over the past year, it is now imperative that a new star arrives at the club, and Tete, who is currently a free agent and was hailed as "immaculate" by Brendan Rodgers, must be snapped up in a heartbeat.
