Leeds United have now been handed a boost in their pursuit of Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer, with Burnley recently dropping out of the race for his signature, according to a report from LeedsLive.
Is Gustavo Hamer staying at Coventry?
Coventry have a real fight on their hands as they try to keep hold of Hamer this summer, with a number of clubs already making bids for the midfielder, who is set to be out of contract next summer.
When asked whether any offers have been made for the 26-year-old, Sky Blues boss Mark Robins admitted he has fielded some proposals, saying:
“The honest answer is yes, we have had offers but they haven’t been acceptable. That could change, who knows. He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about it, and other clubs covet them and put things in his head and that’s something that you can’t remove from his head.
I think really what I would like to see is us finish our recruitment and then see what’s what, but ultimately it’s his decision."
It is unclear which teams have come forward for the Dutchman, but Fulham previously been named as potential suitors, while Football Insider report that Premier League side Burnley have already had a player-plus-cash bid rejected this summer.
The same report claims that Coventry are set to demand at least £12m for the Brazil-born midfielder, as they are desperate to keep hold of him.

While Burnley were interested earlier in the transfer window, Leeds Live report the Clarets have now dropped out of the race for the Coventry star, as they are closing in on two other signings which would rule them out of contention.
As such, Leeds have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the former Feyenoord man, who they are understood to be admirers of, however they are yet to test the waters with an official offer.
How good is Gustavo Hamer?
With the Whites aiming to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, they need to strengthen their squad with some top players at Championship level, which could make the £6.5k-per-week maestro a perfect addition to the squad.
Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca has recently lauded the defensive midfielder as "one of the best in the Championship", while former teammate Marko Marosi has described him as "unbelievable."
It is clear to see why the Championship star has received such rave reviews, as he ranks in the 99th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, and in the 95th percentile for non-penalty goals.
Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
Not only is the playmaker a real threat on the front foot, but he is also very much capable defensively, averaging a total of 2.6 tackles per game in the Championship last season, which could make him a solid replacement for Tyler Adams, who registered 89 tackles in the top flight last term.
It is exciting news that Leeds are still in the race for Hamer, and they should look to launch a move once Adams is sold, with Chelsea now closing in on the American's signature.
Liverpool's transfer objective for the remainder of the summer transfer window is no secret: the Anfield side need to sign a first-class defensive midfielder after missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea.
Who are Liverpool going to sign?
After suffering the plight of losing a transfer battle to the Blues twice over recent days, Jurgen Klopp's side still need to replace Fabinho after the Brazilian was sold to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad for £40m in July.

The Reds are said to have compiled a shortlist of options to fortify the Anfield centre, with Fulham's Joao Palhinha and Crystal Palace's Cheick Doucoure at the forefront of the shopping list.
However, according to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have leapt into contention to sign Lille's rising star Carlos Baleba this month, looking to bypass Brighton & Hove Albion's pursuit, with the Seagulls currently seeking to replace Caicedo with the Cameroonian talent, who is valued at €30m (£26m) by his French side.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano even went as far as to describe the talent as the "perfect" replacement for Liverpool's former target.
Who is Carlos Baleba?
Some would argue that Liverpool's ostensible interest in Baleba is lazy and lackadaisical, but the Reds have been credited with an interest in the 19-year-old midfielder back in March, with Arsenal and Manchester United also monitoring his situation.
And he has certainly been making waves in Ligue 1, with his performances leaving journalist Graeme Bailey waxing lyrical and calling him a "future star", with the teenager breaking into the Lille first-team last term and displaying his passing composure by completing 84% of his passes across 19 outings in Ligue 1.
He also ranks among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for blocks, the top 12% for tackles, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 9% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref, illustrating his defensive tenacity and aptitude as a forward-barrelling midfield vehicle.

It is this skill set that has left Brighton pushing for his services and Liverpool closely monitoring the situation, and there is every possibility that the teenager will prove to be an apt alternative to Caicedo for Klopp's men.
Caicedo joined the Seagulls for £4.5m from his homeland side Independiente del Valle in 2021, and completed 89% of his passes, averaging 2.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the Premier League last season, earning an average match rating of 7.08.
The Ecuadorian, still only 21, is one of the crispest passers on English shores and boasts a destructive defensive presence to stifle the most fluid and threatening of attacks, ranking among the top 5% of midfielders for pass completion, the top 14% for tackles and the top 15% for interceptions per 90.
Hailed as the "crown jewel" of Ecuadorian football by football expert and historian Enrico Castro-Montes, the failure to sign Caicedo has left a sour taste in the mouths of all affiliated with the Merseyside outfit, but by swooping for Baleba, such concerns could quickly evaporate.
And while there will be concerns over the player's age and inexperience, Baleba could be signed for a relatively paltry fee, leaving room to bolster the midfield further and providing Klopp with a prodigious talent who could be moulded into a superlative star capable of rivalling his South American counterpart as the Premier League's standout No. 6.
Mitchell Starc marked England’s Ashes arrival with a devastating, career-best 8 for 73 for New South Wales to dismantle South Australia in the day-night Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval. National captain Steven Smith, however, made another low score before the Blues sealed a six-wicket victory. In a match where ball dominated bat, Starc’s dominance was aided by a pair of wickets for fellow Test bowler Nathan Lyon, as the Redbacks were unable to set NSW a truly challenging target on the third afternoon of the fixture.Starc had never previously taken more than six wickets in an innings, but his fast yorkers were much too good for SA’s lower order, including the Test wicket-keeping aspirant Alex Carey, who was pinned lbw. SA’s captain Callum Ferguson provided most of the hosts’ resistance, but he was fortunate to be dropped by Peter Nevill – another wicket-keeping candidate – off Pat Cummins.Left needing only 57, the Blues made hard work of it, losing Nic Maddinson, Smith, David Warner and Kurtis Patterson before they were able to close the match out. Chadd Sayers, 12th man for the Adelaide Test a year ago, was another bowler to have an excellent match, claiming six wickets without having much in the way of scoreboard pressure to help him.
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShane Watson’s best is still better than the rest. But even after a producing a sublime 77 from 46 balls, more than double the next-highest score in the match, Sydney Thunder still needed Arjun Nair and Aiden Blizzard to conjure 16 from the final over to steal the game off the final ball.Daniel Sams, on his T20 debut with just three first-class matches to his name, appeared to have won the game for the Sixers with the ball. In the 18th over of the chase, with just 26 needed, he conceded two singles and a leg bye and removed Ryan Gibson and Watson with consecutive balls. But the Thunder still found a way via a couple of powerful strikes and a fortunate top-edge.Sams’ 4 for 14 aside, spin was the most effective weapon at Spotless Stadium. Nic Maddinson looked in phenomenal touch, taking Watson to task in his only over. Watson turned to Fawad Ahmed and the legspinner spun a web. He removed Maddinson in a wicket-maiden in the seventh over of the innings.Nair overcame a nervous start to combine with Fawad to take 3 for 5 in 15 deliveries in the middle of the innings to grind the Sixers to a halt.Sam Billings salvaged the sinking ship with 32 from 21 to help the Sixers to a slightly-above-average total of 149.Sams started beautifully showcasing all his skills in the first over. A quick bouncer to Jos Buttler preceded a full and straight delivery and then the three-card trick, an off-cutter slower ball that forced Buttler to check his shot and pop up a return catch.Kurtis Patterson placed enormous pressure on Watson by striking at just 78 in his innings of 29. But Watson was unfazed. The veteran showed the value of continuing to play cricket at lower levels despite stepping away from two formats of the professional game. His two hundreds in Sydney grade cricket this summer helped prepare him for his masterclass tonight. He struck the ball with trademark power and authority. He showed the controlled hitting and calmness that made him one of the best T20 players on the planet in his prime. His dismissal to Sams came as a shock, but he wasn’t deceived so much as he failed to elevate his cover drive high enough. But Blizzard and Nair found the 24 required from the last 13 balls, mainly at the expense of Sean Abbott who gave up three boundaries in the last over.

Glasgow Rangers secured a solid 2-0 victory over Ross County in the pouring rain at Dingwall, setting them up nicely for the trip to Eindhoven in midweek.
Michael Beale made a few changes from the 2-2 draw against PSV at Ibrox on Tuesday, and this included a start for Kemar Roofe – his first since April 2022.
Having lost their first Premiership tie against Kilmarnock and slipping immediately behind Celtic, all three points were required, and they duly delivered.
How did Rangers perform vs Ross County?
A solid, if unspectacular performance secured another win, and Beale will be pleased by how comfortably the game went by, especially in the first half.
Captain James Tavernier led by example with yet another wonderful performance, and his goal was a sight to behold.
Striding forward with purpose, the right-back looked in a menacing mood and unleashed a stunning, dipping shot that nestled into the top corner to give the Light Blues a two-goal advantage following Kemar Roofe’s opener.
Alongside his goal, the Englishman also demonstrated how effective he is going forward by making four key passes during the tie, while also succeeding with one successful dribble and taking three shots during the game.
Defensively, he won 50% of his ground duels along with making one tackle and one interception, as well as committing just one foul, which was good enough to help his team keep a clean sheet.

But as good as Tavernier was, it was centre-back John Souttar who was an absolute rock at the back for Beale against the Highland side, and he was a major contributing factor to the club keeping a clean sheet.
How did John Souttar perform against Ross County?
Speaking to the media before this match, fellow defender Leon Balogun praised the Scot, saying:
“I think he’s a very strong player. Last season didn’t go the way he planned as he got injured early on. Since I’ve come back, you can see that he’s a good defender and there are a few things that I’ve wanted to copy from him.
“We’ve got really good defenders in the backline and there’s no point being sour because we have big targets this season. In order to achieve them, you need a strong squad and that’s what we have.”
John Souttar
Against County, Souttar was a rock, while also showing how comfortable he is on the ball by taking 77 touches and completing 48 passes as he looked to start attacks from the back often.
Souttar won eight of nine total duels during the match, showcasing his physicality. He also made seven clearances, three interceptions and two tackles, and wasn’t dribbled past once across the 90 minutes.
It was a commanding performance by the former Hearts defender, and he has certainly emerged as a first-choice centre-back alongside Connor Goldson.
With two tough games against PSV and Celtic to come next week, seeing the 26-year-old in this sort of form will undoubtedly please Beale ahead of tougher tasks.
Arsenal appear to be eyeing up a late move for Torino defender Perr Schuurs, however, the Gunners aren’t the only Premier League side keen on the player.
What’s the latest Arsenal transfer news?
Mikel Arteta and those at the Emirates have been relatively busy in the transfer market this summer, with four new players brought in at a cost of around £200m.
Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya have all made the move to north London, however, Timber has already suffered a serious ACL injury and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
As a result, the Gunners, and by extension sporting director Edu, could dip into the market once again for another defensive addition but may need to sell first. Reports have suggested that Arsenal are looking to raise £100m in player departures before the end of the window. Should they do that, it appears as if Schuurs is a new name on the club’s radar, with a fresh update emerging.
Football London relayed the latest news on Schuurs and a possible move to England in the last 48 hours, with top-flight rivals Tottenham and Liverpool also seemingly keen on the defender, who appears to be valued at £35m.
When it came to Arsenal, the report said:
“Arsenal have closely followed the progress of Perr Schuurs and could soon make a move to sign the defender, but first Mikel Arteta will have to make a key decision.”
Speaking about the club’s transfer plans at the back following Timber's injury, Fabrizio Romano has claimed:
“It’s important for Arsenal to decide if they want a new centre-back or full-back, because we know Timber can play both positions.
“Arsenal need to decide what the right signing will be, and they will only act if they are convinced they’ve found the right option, that’s always their strategy – I don’t see them spending crazy money.”
Former Ajax defender Perr Schuurs.
Who is Perr Schuurs?
Schuurs is 23 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-back who journalist Josh Bunting described as a “mountain" last year.
Sponsored by Nike, the player began his career in Fortuna Sittard’s academy before moving to Ajax in 2018. Schuurs went on to make 95 senior appearances for the Eredivisie giants and joined Torino last summer.

He appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €25m Transfermarkt valuation and during his time in Italy, Schuurs has turned out on 35 occasions.
Over the past 12 months, as per FBref, Schuurs has impressed in a number of areas. He ranks in the top 8% of centre-backs for long pass completion and assists per 90, while also placing in the top 20% for tackles. He hasn’t averaged an error per 90 either and is in the 83rd percentile for ball recoveries, so a move for Schuurs could be a shrewd one.
However, he appears to be limited when it comes to his versatility as he only plays as a centre-back, but by the looks of things, a move could be one to keep an eye on before the deadline.
Moeen Ali has had an unhappy Ashes tour and an attritional Melbourne pitch did nothing to alleviate the suffering
George Dobell in Melbourne26-Dec-20172:12
Nannes: “Can’t judge the pitch based on just the first innings”
When Australia’s captain Steven Smith suggested that Dawid Malan had been the pick of the England spinners in Perth, it was dismissed as “stirring” by Joe Root. But, as the first day of the Boxing Day Test wore on, you wondered if Root wasn’t starting to come round to Smith’s way of thinking. It wasn’t that Malan – a man with 14 first-class wickets in the last five years – looked especially dangerous. Oh, no. England aren’t setting the bar that high when it comes to spin bowling at present. It was simply that Root could rely on him to offer a semblance of control while his first-choice spinner, Moeen Ali, conceded almost a run-a-ball.So while Malan, a bowler of gentle legspin, delivered his first six overs for just 13 runs and did not concede a boundary until his seventh over, Moeen went for 35 from the only six overs with which he was entrusted. Among those runs were four fours and a six.If that doesn’t sound bad enough, it is worth reflecting on England’s tactics here. Accepting that they do not have the bite to dismiss Australia with an attacking approach, they have instead resolved to frustrate them. So, after a first session in which Australia (and David Warner in particular) thrashed 102 runs in 28 overs, England bowled with such control that the subsequent 71 overs realised only 142 runs and brought three wickets. It’s not a perfect ploy, for sure, but it may be the best they have available to them.Moeen is struggling to fit into such a game plan. Unable to prevent batsmen hitting him over the top, he has his mid-on and mid-off too far back to stop singles. And while a captain might be able to live with that, the addition of the occasional horrid long-hop – there was one at the end of his first over here – or half-volley renders it almost impossible to set a field for him. He can be milked like a Friesian.Stuart Broad, by comparison, also conceded four fours. But Broad, looking considerably better than he had in Perth, did so having delivered 13 more overs with only two of those boundaries coming after his first spell. James Anderson conceded five fours in 21 overs but none in his final 12. Together they frustrated Australia and made them work hard for nearly every run. Moeen threatened to release that pressure so forced the seamers into longer, more frequent spells.Moeen Ali reflects on a dispiriting tour•ESPNcricinfo LtdThere were caveats earlier in the tour. The side strain sustained on the first day of training robbed him of the opportunity to gain the bowling he required ahead of the first Test, while the cut finger sustained in Brisbane robbed him of the ability to give the ball much of a tweak. Even on Christmas Day he took a blow on the left wrist that put his inclusion in jeopardy here. But we can’t keep making excuses. England have been in Australia for two months now. And in this Test series Moeen has claimed three wickets at a cost of 117 each while his Australian counterpart, Nathan Lyon, has taken 14 at 26.07. If he’s not taking wickets – and this was a day crying out for his long-forgotten doosra – or offering control, it’s not really working as a selection.Moeen is not, of course, the first spinner to struggle in Australia. Since 1990, bowlers with reputations as high as Muttiah Muralitharan (who averaged 75.41 per wicket) and Harbhajan Singh (73.22) have struggled here. Last year Yasir Shah took his wickets at a cost of 84 apiece. All three of them actually conceded more runs per over than Moeen’s rate of 3.44, though that may be as they continued to bowl a heavy volume of overs. This was the first day of the Test, too, and it is not so long since Moeen was Man of the Series for his bowling against South Africa. He has earned the extended run he is receiving and it is not as if there are obvious alternatives demanding selection. But Moeen is not contributing with the bat, either. He has made 38 runs from his last four innings combined and is averaging 19.33 in the series. For perhaps the first time in his career, neither skill is mitigating for the struggles in the other. As a consequence, his place looks more precarious than it as for some time. He needs a performance, either here or in Sydney.Would it have been different if Mason Crane had been selected? Or if Samit Patel had been brought along as a support spinner and strong middle-order batting option? Of course it might. But Crane, unsurprisingly for a 20-year-old legspinner, bowls his share of boundary balls, too, and, on the evidence of this tour (where he has claimed five first-class wickets at a cost of 58.20 apiece), he would be equally unable to play the part of containing bowler in England’s attritional attack. And while he is an improving batsman, his highest first-class score is 29 and he would go in no higher than No. 9. As a result, he would further add to a tail that already has a hint of diplodocus about it.Crane might be an indirect victim of the Ben Stokes debacle. Had Stokes been available, England would have had greater allrounder cover to enable them to take a risk in selecting a young legspinner. It is so hard to balance the side in Stokes’ absence, however, that Crane has been left on the sidelines. It was a demanding day for more than 88,000 at the MCG•ESPNcricinfo LtdBut might this not have offered an ideal opportunity to try new players and new approaches? They series is lost, after all. So why are England still playing safe? Having spent an average of 160 overs in the field in the opposition’s first innings of their most recent eight away Tests, it seems fair to conclude that the current approach isn’t really working. Perhaps it was worth abandoning the attrition and attempting the attack?Whether this pitch offers any options other than attrition may become more apparent when Pat Cummins and co bowl on it. On the evidence of the first day it looked a disappointing slow, low wicket that did nothing to encourage bright and positive cricket.Whether the tastes of modern life have any room for attrition as entertainment is open to debate. It does seem cricket – well, Test cricket, anyway – missed an opportunity here, though. With almost 90,000 people in the ground, a fair number of them young and attending, perhaps, their first such day of cricket, there was a chance to win them over to the sport for a lifetime. Instead this wicket will have risked putting them off for a lifetime. Really, pitches like this do nothing for Test cricket’s future.”You’d think the 90,000 people that turned up don’t want to see 244 for three,” Anderson said afterwards. “People want to see entertaining cricket, especially in an iconic Test like the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. People want to see exciting cricket.”It wasn’t exciting to watch. It wasn’t exciting to play in, to be honest, when it’s attritional like that. But that’s the pitch that we’ve got, and we’ve got to put up with it.”The paying spectator doesn’t, though. And in a city like Melbourne, with its park and beaches and shopping and countless other attractions, Test cricket has to do better if it wants to remain relevant. The crowd left in its droves long before the end. It would be complacent to presume they’ll all be back.
