Leeds Can Land Gnonto Partner With £3.4m Swoop

Leeds United have allowed a host of first-team players to move on from Elland Road this summer but are trying to keep hold of Wilfried Gnonto.

Who has left Leeds this summer?

Robin Koch, Brenden Aaronson, Max Wober, Marc Roca, and Rasmus Kristensen have all left the club on loan deals until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Rodrigo, Tyler Roberts, Joel Robles, and Adam Forshaw have also departed the Yorkshire-based outfit either on permanent or free transfers.

However, they are not prepared to let Gnonto leave without a fight. The Italy international was absent for the League Cup win over Shrewsbury after he asked to be left out of the squad.

He is now back in training and is expected to be with the team for the Championship clash with Birmingham City, with The Athletic's Phil Hay reporting that the club are resisting the temptation to cash in on him.

If Leeds are able to keep hold of the talented youngster, Daniel Farke could land Gnonto a dream partner in attack by signing reported transfer target Joel Pohjanpalo, who reportedly has a release clause of €4m (£3.4m).

How good is Joel Pohjanpalo?

The Venezia centre-forward is coming off the back of an impressive campaign in Serie B and could be the ideal player to play alongside the Italian dynamo this season.

Pohjanpalo is a physically imposing striker who "creates problems" – as per journalist Josh Bunting – for defenders with his strength, which could allow him to complement Gnonto as the 19-year-old ace is not a towering attacker who can bully the opposition.

Leeds striker Wilfried Gnonto.

Last season, the teenage wizard won 0.3 aerial battles per game across the Premier League campaign and lost a whopping 69% of his duels in the air.

Whereas, the Finland international won 2.9 aerial contests per match for Venezia and came out on top in 51% of that type of physical duel, which shows that the 28-year-old brute is strong in the air and capable of holding off opposition defenders to win flick-ons and hold the ball up.

This means that Pohjanpalo could be the focal point of Farke's attack and this would allow Gnonto to use his sharpness and pace to make things happen around the ex-Bayer Leverkusen forward.

The current Leeds attacker ranked within the top 13% of his positional peers for progressive carries per 90 in the Premier League last season. This suggests that the talented hotshot excels at picking up the ball in deep positions to drive the team up the pitch.

He would, therefore, be suited to a deeper role – possibly as a number ten – behind Pohjanpalo to utilise their respective strengths in the best possible way as an exciting pairing at the top end of the pitch.

Pohjanpalo could also be a fantastic addition to the squad as he is a proven goalscorer. The Finnish marksman racked up 19 goals in 37 Serie B matches for Venezia last term, which is six more than any Whites player managed throughout the 2022/23 top-flight campaign.

Therefore, the reported Leeds target could improve Farke's options in attack and provide him with the perfect foil for Gnonto, if the club can keep hold of the ex-Inter prodigy.

Leeds: Farke Could Land "Classy" £75k-p/w Ampadu Partner As Next Signing

Leeds United need to get bodies through the door quickly if they are to get their league campaign back on track, with one touted addition certain to have a monumental impact…

Who are Leeds United signing?

With Ethan Ampadu comfortably their star addition for the window thus far, his impact has been stellar despite only making three Championship appearances.

With experience and quality that belies his youth, there is a fine foundation for a stunning engine room to be forged should Daniel Farke recruit intelligently to rebuild his shattered squad.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Reeling from the permanent exits of Rodrigo and Tyler Adams, alongside no less than six loan departures, the need for additions is huge.

Therefore, reports linking them with a swoop for Jonjo Shelvey should not be turned away, as he would bring an immense level of talent and many appearances at a level way above the Whites’ current one.

Despite having only joined Nottingham Forest in January, already it seems like the 31-year-old is ready to move on from his £75k-per-week deal and pursue regular first-team football elsewhere.

How good is Jonjo Shelvey?

Having starred for prestigious clubs such as Liverpool and Newcastle United, making 202 appearances in total for the latter as he went down and earned promotion back to the top flight, to add Leeds to this list would not look out of place.

Historic in size and stature, the west Yorkshire outfit have endured a troubled past two decades, the bulk of which they were absent from the Premier League.

Farke will not only be desperate to ensure they can earn an instant return, but also build a solid foundation for consistent and longstanding success that helps cement their status alongside the elite of English football.

Therefore, pairing the ageing but experienced maestro in question with Ampadu could mark a dream combination, placing two tough-tackling and tireless midfielders at the heart of the German’s all-action system.

Given his lack of playtime over the last year, it is Shelvey’s 2021/22 season that is the most relevant for analysis given he featured 24 times as the Magpies turned a relegation-threatened term on its head.

His 6.93 average rating was admirable and was underpinned by his three goal contributions, 81% pass accuracy, and 1.3 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

However, at his peak, the maestro was a combative and cultured ace who could score and create. During the 2019/20 season, his 7.14 average rating fed into his eight goal contributions, via Sofascore.

Former teammate Isaac Hayden even went as far as to brand him a “Rolls-Royce of a player”, with his conduct and personality emphasised by his “classy” departure from Tyneside, as journalist Dominic Scurr outlined.

Should he recapture that kind of goalscoring form, which Ampadu’s presence would facilitate, then he could actually be the shock signing that spurs them towards promotion.

Especially given how the 22-year-old has taken to life at Elland Road, maintaining an 87% pass accuracy alongside 1.3 interceptions, 2.7 tackles and 1.7 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

He is incredibly solid yet economical with possession, and he could help bring back the firepower that once made Shelvey so great.

History says Australia but new chapter can be written

England have not won at the Gabba in 31 years and few give them a chance on this occasion, but for all the talk Australia are not without their issues

The Preview by Daniel Brettig22-Nov-2017Big PictureHaving played three series within two years from 2013 to 2015, Australia and England resume their rivalry with a pair of vastly recast teams. There are new captains in Steven Smith and Joe Root, a pair of largely youthful and uncertain batting orders, while Australia’s much vaunted bowling attack boasts only one man – the skilful and durable Nathan Lyon – to have played a home Ashes Test before this week. England have their two greatest ever wicket-takers in James Anderson and Stuart Broad, but for now at least there is no Ben Stokes, the best performer in an otherwise horrid 2013-14 series.Perhaps because of the aforementioned newness, there has been plenty of talk about that encounter in particular. Lacking much in the way of first-hand experience, the Australians have sought to remind themselves as much as England of exactly what happened four years ago, with a hearty slice of intimidatory rhetoric thrown in. By contrast, Root has led his touring party in reminding all and sundry of the fact that few of the visitors went through that experience, which was the exception to recent Ashes history that has seen the Three Lions emerge victorious in four of five series. At the same time Australia’s formidable record at the Gabba, making the most of its pace and bounce to be unbeaten in Brisbane for 29 years now, serves as a source of comfort to the hosts but also opportunity for the tourists. Alastair Cook, Anderson and Broad can remember how the 2010-11 team escaped Queensland with a fighting draw that also fatigued the Australian bowlers, and the avoidance of defeat in this first match would take on even greater significance given the conditions likely to favour English seam and swing in Adelaide, with its floodlights, pink ball and grassy surface.Nevertheless, it is Smith who holds the most obvious aces in this series in the shape of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, a trio of contrasting yet highly skilled pace bowlers who possess an array of speeds, angles and approaches the envy of the rest of the world. Australia’s tough talk is built upon a strong belief that these fast men can crack England open at the first time of asking much as Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle did four years ago. Should Root’s men be able to stand up to their examination after seeing nothing like the same pace or bounce in their desultory lead-up matches, this encounter may well run a rather different course.Form guideAustralia WLLDL (last five matches, most recent first)
England WLWWWIn the spotlightAustralia’s eagerness to reference 2013-14 will only be relevant if they can find a bowler capable of having the same sort of visceral impact as Mitchell Johnson, and Pat Cummins seems most likely to fit the bill. Should he be used in short, sharp spells by Smith he can be every bit as fast as Johnson, with a steep, rearing trajectory and plenty of venom. However unlike Johnson, Cummins is not entering this series with years of experience behind him – the Gabba will be Cummins’ first ever Test match on home turf. Also intriguing is how behind Cummins and Mitchell Starc, Australia have few other viable options of similar pace following injuries to James Pattinson and Nathan Coulter-Nile.A key to success in Australia is to take plenty of wickets with the new ball before it becomes appreciably easier to bat, and for England to succeed they will need Alastair Cook to blunt the home side’s pacemen. On his fourth Ashes tour, Cook was dominant in 2010-11 but struggled against higher class bowling on his other two visits and started this one with a first-ball duck in a Perth tour match. Yet freed from the burdens of captaincy and with a deep knowledge of what works in Australia, he has the capacity to set-up England’s innings for the 400 plus totals that will be necessary to dictate terms.Teams newsAs expected, Australia left out Jackson Bird and Chadd Sayers from their final XI, while Warner is likely to play despite suffering from a neck complaint during training in Brisbane this week although Glenn Maxwell was added as cover. Shaun Marsh had a stiff back as well so Maxwell could come in for either Marsh or Warner. Cameron Bancroft will debut at the top of the order with Shaun Marsh at No. 6, and the wicketkeeper Tim Paine playing his first Test match since 2010.Australia: 1 Cameron Bancroft, 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Pete Handscomb, 6 Shaun Marsh, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodJake Ball was named in the XI as the fourth seamer ahead of Craig Overton*, while Moeen Ali will be seen at No. 6 and Jonny Bairstow at No. 7 with the latter’s ability to bat well with the tail.England: 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Mark Stoneman, 3 James Vince, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Dawid Malan, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Jake Ball, 10 Stuart Broad 11 James AndersonPitch and conditionsThe final pitch prepared by Kevin Mitchell Jnr is likely to offer pace and bounce, generally more so on days two and three than the opening day, before offering cracks and footmarks for the slower bowlers later on. It will have a smattering of grass. Showers are forecast to fall at times throughout the match.Stats and trivia Australia have not lost a Test match at the Gabba since 1988, with England not winning there since 1986 England have claimed the Ashes in four of the past five series between the two nations, leaving 2013-14 in Australia as the exception Six Australian players – Smith, Warner, Lyon, Hazlewood, Marsh and Starc – remain from the team that lost to England in the previous series in 2015. England, too, have six from that series – Cook, Root, Bairstow, Moeen, Broad and Anderson. Lyon enters the series needing 23 wickets to surpass Craig McDermott and move into sixth on the all-time list of Australian Test wicket-takersQuotes”I think we saw last time England came out here a few blokes struggled with extra bounce in the wicket. Hopefully we can exploit that again.”
“We’re about due to win here. It’s the reason why Australia play the first Test of a series here because they have such a good record here. But what a way to start the series if we can go one up here. It would really upset the apple cart and could give us a lot of momentum.”

Manchester United Make Approach To Sign £50m "One-Man Army"

Manchester United have enquired about a deal to sign Everton's Amadou Onana this summer, but a new report has revealed that he’s not their first-choice candidate in defensive midfield.

What nationality is Amadou Onana?

Onana was originally born in Dakar, Senegal, but represents Belgium internationally and first made the move to the Premier League from Lille last summer where he’s made a total of 36 appearances following his arrival, but there’s a chance that he could already be on the move after just one campaign at Goodison Park.

The Toffees’ 21-year-old still has another four years remaining on his contract on Merseyside, but having made an instant impression to establish himself as Sean Dyche’s third best-performing defensive player last season, he appears to have caught the eye of Erik ten Hag in M16.

The Daily Mail previously reported that the Red Devils were assessing the possibility of a move having internally “held discussions” prior, and whilst talks have “not progressed” since then, the boss could be forced to enter the market to consider what options are out there.

Scott McTominay could be on his way out before the end of the window having been the subject of a £30m rejected offer from West Ham United and Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat has been the player most heavily linked to replace him should he depart, but with negotiations having not yet developed, the talented top-flight prospect has emerged as a possible alternative.

Are Man United signing Amadou Onana?

According to The Guardian, Everton have received an “approach” from Man United regarding a summer swoop for Onana. Ten Hag is looking to bolster his ranks with more “physicality” and therefore wants to recruit a “commanding” central talisman.

The Blues are “reluctant” to lose their prized asset and hope to retain his services for at least another year, but it’s stated that a bid of £50m could “convince” them to sanction his sale. Old Trafford chiefs view their target as “more than a destroyer” and believe that he is “good enough” to operate alongside the likes of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

How tall is Amadou Onana?

Standing at 6 foot 3, Onana adds a different dimension to the centre of the park with his height and has previously been dubbed a “one-man army” by talent scout Jacek Kulig due to his big stature, and there’s no doubt that he would dramatically improve Ten Hag’s defensive midfield ranks if he was to sign on the dotted line.

The BTFM client last season ranked in the 93rd percentile for aerial wins and won 43 out of his 72 tackles which was the second-highest success rate at Everton, via FBRef, showing that he’s not afraid to throw himself into challenges to clear the danger for his team.

The 2022 World Cup participant, who has the versatility to operate in five different positions over the grass, can also pose a threat when it comes to efforts in the final third having scored ten goals and provided five assists throughout his career, so for such a well-rounded player, testing the waters by tabling an offer may well be seen as a no-brainer of a decision for United.

Mashrafe Mortaza backs pace-heavy plan

Bangladesh will keep backing a three-man pace attack in the tri-nation series at home despite their recent poor form, according to their ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza. The hosts have five pace bowlers to pick from in their 16-man squad, which also contains three frontline spinners. The cold conditions in Dhaka over the last two weeks, however, suggest that seam and swing are more likely than spin. There is also the chance that dew could negate the effectiveness of Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Sunzamul Islam.Mashrafe said the fast bowlers had to be backed because of how they had delivered since the 2015 World Cup. And with another World Cup coming up in 18 months, he said, persisting with a pace-heavy attack made more sense to him.”We have hardly played too many games since 2015 with less than three pace bowlers,” Mashrafe said. “They have helped us win games and have also been cause of some losses too. There can be a bad patch, but it is important to have faith in the pace bowlers, especially with a World Cup in England coming up.”In the current squad, Mashrafe and Mustafizur Rahman are the first choices with Rubel Hossain, Abul Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin vying for the third seamer’s slot. If the pitch and conditions demand a very pace-heavy attack, Bangladesh could play four seamers, and Shakib as the lone spinner. The pace bowlers have to bounce back from an underwhelming tour of South Africa. Rubel returned the best figures there, having taken a seven scalps at an average of 53.14. Mashrafe, Mustafizur and Saifuddin took only five wickets in all, while Taskin Ahmed took two wickets across all formats. He was then dropped from the ODI squad.Mashrafe, who went wicketless in the ODI series in South Africa, was the only pace bowler who bounced back well in the BPL, bagging a tally of 15 wickets.”There is always pressure when you are playing for your country,” he said. “It is a good thing, because the best performance comes out in a pressure situation. But I think many of our players have played under more intense pressure. We didn’t get what we wanted from our last tour but I am hopeful that we will be able to execute better this time.”

Zimbabwe look to revive happy times against Sri Lanka

Liverpool Reignite Interest In £14k-p/w "Monster"

Liverpool have reignited their interest in Nice central midfielder Khephren Thuram, but a new report has revealed that he isn't the only candidate being considered in the centre of the park.

Is Khephren Thuram the son of Lilian?

Thuram is indeed the son of former professional Lilian Thuram and also the younger brother of Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, and the talent clearly runs in the family because he’s been one of the club’s main targets over the course of the current window.

Fabrizio Romano previously reported that following the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, FSG and Jurgen Klopp held direct contact with the 22-year-old’s agent to decide whether they wanted him to be their next recruit, but eventually decided against a move considering his lack of experience in the Premier League.

The Reds have since signed Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo, but with one more fresh face being added still a possibility before Friday, France’s youth international appears to have been brought back onto the hierarchy’s radar as they consider a late swoop.

Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.

Are Liverpool signing Khephren Thuram?

According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool have placed Thuram "high up on the list" of central midfield options, with chiefs still in the market to bring in another fresh face before the transfer deadline.

Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch has also emerged as a top target, alongside Borussia Monchengladbach's Manu Kone, but it's thought that the latter is "lower down" on the priority list.

The Reds have therefore "opened up another possibility" of a swoop for the Ligue 1 gem, with Nice having previously anticipated selling him this summer.

Likes to play short passes

Does not dive into tackles

(Information via WhoScored)

Liverpool are clearly very fond of Thuram to have returned to the table in the closing stages of the window and it’s no surprise considering that he’s been described as a player who can become a “monster” under Klopp by reporter Sam McGuire, so should the talisman put pen to paper, it could be a massive coup.

The Reggio Emilia native, who pockets £14k-per-week, has won seven out of his nine tackles made so far this season which is the highest success rate throughout his squad, via FBRef, but he can also be a threat in the final third having posted 19 senior contributions (11 assists and eight goals) during his time at Nice.

Standing at 6 foot 3, Didier Digard’s colossus also ranks in the 94th percentile for successful take-ons so loves to dribble past his marker, alongside recording 18 shot-creating actions at this stage in the campaign which is more than any other of his teammates, showing what a standout star he is.

Finally, Thuram has the ability to operate in four different positions over the grass, including three roles in the midfield and even out wide on the left wing, so not only would he provide the manager with welcome versatility, making this one to keep an eye on before Friday.

Chelsea Also Submit Moscardo Bid Alongside Palmer Deal

After working on improving Mauricio Pochettino's immediate squad at Chelsea, the Blues have seemingly turned their attention back towards the future, as the summer transfer window approaches ever closer to slamming shut.

The London club have once again been busy with incomings and outgoings this summer, continuing the trend under Todd Boehly, and are not just attempting to return to Europe's top table. Instead, it looks as though they're making sure that their seat is a permanent one this time around.

With that said, Chelsea have reportedly submitted a formal bid for a player who could play a large part in their future amongst the upper echelons of the Premier League.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Just when it looks like Chelsea are done for the summer, another player is ready to be seen holding up the famous colours at Stamford Bridge, scarf in hand, contract signed.

The latest big player set to come through the door is Manchester City academy graduate Cole Palmer, who will complete his move to the London club in a deal worth £40m, plus £5m in add-ons, according to Fabrizio Romano.

And according to Romano, Chelsea have also presented a formal bid to Corinthians for 17-year-old midfielder Gabriel Moscardo, who is valued at €25m (£20m) by the Brazilian club.

The bid has reportedly already been discussed, and now the Blues must await the verdict from Corinthians.

If the teenager does complete a move to Stamford Bridge this summer, it would be a move for the future, instead of one that plays a part in Pochettino's plans this season.

Should Chelsea sign Gabriel Moscardo?

Adding a 17-year-old midfielder who has already broken into Corinthians' first-team wouldn't exactly be bad business for Chelsea, as they look to secure their future in the middle of the park.

It's little surprise that Chelsea are looking to sign Moscardo, either, given his recent performances. According to FBref, the teenager has made 11 progressive passes in his last five games, as well as making eight progressive carries. Those two statistics, in particular, show that Moscardo, even at such a young age, is a player willing to take control of games in midfield, highlighting his maturity.

Meanwhile, when it comes to keeping hold of the ball, the Chelsea target's composure stands out once again, as he enjoyed a pass completion rate above 80% in three of his last five games, even completing 50 passes against Cruzeiro.

Of course, it would be some step-up for Moscardo, going from Corinthians to Chelsea, but given time, the likes of Pochettino can use the clear foundation of quality that the midfielder already possesses to potentially create the next best thing at Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen whether or not Chelsea will be successful with their reported bid, but with time running out in the transfer window, the Blues may have to act fast if they do want to secure Moscardo this summer.

Everything points towards a player with plenty of potential. Now, it's just about unlocking that potential in the coming years, whether that be at Corinthians or Chelsea.

Boost For Leeds: Josh Sargent Transfer Update

Leeds United have just been handed a boost in their pursuit of Norwich City striker Josh Sargent, who Daniel Farke is keen on signing this summer…

Is Josh Sargent signing for Leeds?

On Friday, it was reported that Leeds' owners, 49ers Enterprises, are ready to back the club's pursuit of Sargent, given that previous American signings have really helped increase their appeal to fans in the United States.

The Whites are said to have drawn up a striker shortlist, given that Patrick Bamford is still out injured, and last season's top scorer, Rodrigo Moreno, has left for Qatar, with the Norwich striker making the cut.

It has been detailed that a bid for the 23-year-old could be expected in the coming days, with Farke well aware of his abilities due to their time working together at Carrow Road, and there are now indications the player would be keen on a move to Yorkshire.

In the latest update from Football Insider, it is detailed that the American is keen to complete a reunion with his former manager, which could hand Leeds a major boost as they look to get a deal over the line in the latter stages of the transfer window.

Norwich are reluctant to part ways with the forward, given that he is already off the mark this season, but it is believed that it would not take a huge fee to tempt them into a sale, in what could be another boost for Farke's side.

Farke was the manager to bring the USMNT international to England, signing him for Norwich from Werder Bremen for a reported £8m back in August 2021, and he is now well-placed to seal a reunion with his former player.

How good is Josh Sargent?

Lauded as "fantastic" by members of the media, the former Werder Bremen man really started to come into his own last season, weighing in with 15 goal contributions in 40 Championship games for Norwich, in a much-improved campaign in front of goal.

The versatile attacker, who is capable of playing at right-wing, struggled to find the back of the net in the prior season, scoring just two league goals, although Norwich were in the Premier League at that point, so he could still be a good signing in the second tier.

Farke is clearly a big fan of the Norwich star, given that he is now willing to sign him for the second time, and he has previously lauded him as "unbelievably bright".

josh-sargent

That being said, the £12k-per-week forward is yet to have a prolific season in front of goal, and it could be worth Leeds also bringing in a more out-and-out goalscorer alongside him, if they can afford to do so.

At 23 years of age, however, Sargent is still developing as a player, and it is promising news that he would be keen on reuniting with Farke and moving to Elland Road, so Leeds may look to test the waters with an opening bid in the upcoming days, making this one to watch.
