Rangers could have signed big Scott Wright upgrade at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers enjoyed a somewhat productive summer transfer window, releasing various players such as Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, who were on big wages, while managing to lure some quality to Ibrox in the process.

The likes of Danilo, Jack Butland and Jose Cifuentes are players who have proven their class elsewhere and are the kind of pedigree that can only improve the Gers in the long run.

Michael Beale failed to secure the club Champions League group stage football for the second season in a row and will have to be content with the Europa League following a poor display against PSV Eindhoven.

This wasn’t his only blunder either, as the 42-year-old missed out on a few players during the window, and one could have been a major upgrade on a player who has made just one appearance this season – Scott Wright.

What’s happened to Scott Wright?

The right-winger has failed to light up Ibrox during his two-and-a-half seasons at the club, netting only eight goals and registering seven assists across 85 games, a poor return for a player who was signed in order to add some goal contributions from the flank.

Indeed, across 34 matches last term, Wright managed just one assist, while ranking in a lowly 30th spot for overall Sofascore rating (6.64), tenth for successful dribbles (0.5) and 21st for key passes (0.4) per game, indicating that he failed to really take his chances when given an opportunity to shine.

It’s evident that Beale shouldn’t rely on the Scot during the 2023/24 campaign and the 42-year-old missed a great opportunity to sign a player who was starring in the MLS for Los Angeles FC – Kwadwo Opoku.

Who did Rangers miss out on signing?

Despite Beale completing a major overhaul of his squad, the Ibrox side did miss out on a few targets, such as Luis Palma, Morgan Whittaker and Auston Trusty, yet it could be the failure to sign Opoku that leaves the Gers short of wide options.

Glasgow Rangers forward Scott Wright.

The Ghanaian was linked with a move to the Light Blues back in June, with Old Firm rivals Celtic also showing interest, and it looked as though he could’ve been available for €4.8m (£4m), which wouldn’t have been out of their price range.

The right-winger registered 11 goal contributions during the 2022 MLS season – eight goals and three assists – as he played a starring role in the club claiming the MLS cup.

He ranked third for big chances created (11), sixth for key passes per game (0.8) and for successful dribbles per game (one), clearly suggesting he’d be an upgrade on Wright, especially with his eye for goal.

The 22-year-old was hailed by journalist Owuraku Ampofo following LAFC winning the title, saying: “Kwadwo Opoku caps off a magnificent season with LAFC, helping them lift the MLS trophy.

“Opoku had 8 goals and 3 assists this season, and was vital in the playoffs – providing an assist in the Quarterfinal, and scoring in the semi-final. A fairytale story for the forward.”

It wasn’t to be for Rangers however, as the 5 foot 4 starlet made the move to CF Montreal instead of heading to Europe, and it could certainly come to represent an opportunity missed by the club, especially if Wright barely features before Christmas.

De Kock ruled out of ODIs, T20s against India

The South Africa wicketkeeper suffered a left wrist injury during the second ODI in Centurion, and will need two to four weeks to recover

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Feb-2018South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series, and the T20s against India after suffering a left wrist injury during the second ODI in Centurion. De Kock will require two to four weeks to recover, which could put his participation in the Test series against Australia, which begins on March 1, in doubt.Heinrich Klaasen, the only other specialist wicketkeeper in the squad, is almost certain to make his ODI debut in Cape Town. AB de Villiers is also injured but is expected to return for the fourth ODI at the Wanderers on Saturday, though it is not yet known whether he will take the gloves. The selectors have not named a replacement in the squad.BCCI”Quinton suffered an extreme blow to the left wrist while batting in the second ODI on Sunday and felt severe pain and discomfort,” team manager Mohammed Moosajee said. “Further investigation revealed severe bony bruising to the area, with associated swelling around the tendon in the wrist. This type of injury will require between 2-4 weeks to heal. The Cricket South Africa medical team will aim to have him ready for the Test series against Australia starting next month.”De Kock’s injury leaves South Africa without an opening batsman and their first-choice keeper, but he has endured a torrid time during the India tour. He has not crossed fifty once in eight innings across all formats.De Kock is the third South African player to suffer an injury in the last 10 days, after de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, who are currently recovering from finger injuries. Dale Steyn, who was not named in the ODI squad, is still recovering from a heel concern.India lead the six-match series 2-0 after routing South Africa by nine wickets in the second ODI at SuperSport Park.

Newcastle Transfer News: Hirving Lozano Linked With Deadline-Busting Move

Newcastle United have enjoyed a fairly strong start to the Premier League season, humiliating Aston Villa on the opening day, 5-1 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Premier League champions Manchester City.

Eddie Howe's side could get even better yet, too, with the transfer window coming to a close, and reports suggesting that the Magpies could make a last-gasp attempt to welcome another attacking reinforcement.

What's the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

So far this summer, Newcastle have welcomed a total of five fresh faces, with Harvey Barnes, Sandro Tonali, and, most-recently, Lewis Hall being the pick of the bunch.

Whilst Hall is still awaiting his debut after securing his move from Chelsea so recently, Barnes and Tonali have already impressed for their new club, scoring on their respective debuts against Aston Villa.

It comes as little surprise that Newcastle have added plenty of depth this summer, too, given that they've got Champions League football to contend with this season, as well as an attempt to make it back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League.

Howe will know just how important it is to welcome as much quality as possible if he wants to compete on all fronts, and with that, could reportedly add one more reinforcement.

According to Spazio Napoli, as per Sport Witness, Newcastle could make a "last-minute" attempt to sign Napoli winger Hirving Lozano before the summer transfer window comes to an end.

The Mexican has found himself at somewhat of a crossroads in Italy with his contract coming to an end next summer, and Napoli keen to cash in, perhaps ending in a farewell in the coming days.

It remains to be seen just how much the Serie A champions would demand for Lonzano, but, given that his contract comes to an end next summer, it will not be an inflated price.

Should Newcastle United sign Hirving Lozano?

hirving-lozano-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

After losing Allan Saint-Maximin to Saudi Arabia this summer, Newcastle could certainly do with depth on the flanks, even after welcoming Barnes.

Lozano, like Saint-Maximin, is more of a direct option than others, with his take-on success sitting at 48.7% last season, and significantly better than Barnes' 29.7%. Saint-Maximin, meanwhile, had a take-on success rate of 57.6%.

At his best, Lozano is a player capable of causing havoc in one-on-one situations, and has earned plenty of praise when on top form in the past, including from former Napoli manager Luciano Spalleti.

Spalleti said, via American Post: "He is a splendid boy, above all, of a unique quality. But here everyone has that ability. He is very good, he has delayed his condition a bit in this championship due to the injury he suffered. Now I see him very motivated and smiling. I see him a bit like Osimhen, I see him in the right environment for him."

With that said, everything points towards a player that Newcastle would do well in welcoming before the end of the transfer window. As things stand, however, their interest is that, and only that, as we wait and see whether they push on with a deal for Lozano.

Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar give India 1-0 lead

On a flat pitch, in the thin air of the Highveld, India’s batsmen piled up 203 for 5, and that total proved more than adequate against a South African line-up missing a number of its biggest names. A 28-run win, with starring roles for Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series, but they may not have left the Wanderers entirely thrilled about their performance, particularly with the bat.India’s batting in T20s often seems more risk-averse than the format demands, built on a platform-setting template borrowed from ODIs. This innings was different. Short and wide bowling from Dane Paterson to Rohit Sharma allowed them to plunder 18 from the first over, but they kept going after the bowling even when it wasn’t so charitable. Suresh Raina took it to an extreme, exposing all his stumps and slogging at everything to score a chancy 15 off 7 at No. 3. Dhawan also kept going hard, his top-edged hoicks over the keeper making the same impact on the scorecard as his pristinely-timed flicks over square leg and slaps either side of point. This approach, aided by the bang-it-in tactics of South Africa’s seamers, who didn’t vary their pace nearly as much as they could have, brought India 78 runs in the Powerplay. By the time a Tabraiz Shamsi skidder trapped Virat Kohli in front in the 10th over, their score had already motored past 100. A pair of leg-side boundaries from Dhawan in the 14th over, off the debutant Junior Dala, moved India to 149 for 3. Getting to 200 seemed like a given now; the question was how much more they could get.BCCI

Dhawan fell in the 15th over, lap-scooping an Andile Phehlukwayo slower ball to the keeper. From that point, India simply weren’t able to keep their momentum going; they only managed 46 off the last five overs, with Manish Pandey only managing one boundary in an unbeaten 27-ball innings. South Africa’s bowlers, particularly Paterson who nailed his slower balls and yorkers in the 18th and 20th overs, brought the innings back under some sort of control at the death, but Pandey struggled to come up with answers to the questions he was being asked.Still, 203 seemed like a winning total, despite the last four T20Is at this venue going to the chasing side – but how might things have panned out had South Africa fielded a full-strength batting line-up, or even if they had AB de Villiers available?Even without de Villiers and the rest of the big names, there were moments during South Africa’s innings when they seemed capable of chasing down this total. The first 15 balls of their innings, for instance, brought 28 runs, with Reeza Hendricks and JJ Smuts hitting merrily on the up. But, in Bhuvneshwar, India had a bowler who could get the ball to move sideways as well as use imperceptible changes of pace. His knuckle ball brought them the wickets of Smuts and JP Duminy, and put India firmly back on top. When Hardik Pandya followed up with a slower-ball dismissal of his own to send back David Miller, South Africa were 48 for 3 in the seventh over.South Africa weren’t done yet. Hendricks and Farhaan Behardien clattered 81 in 8.4 overs, and at one point during their fourth-wicket partnership the equation was a difficult but doable 86 off 41 balls. With all the risk-taking that task demanded, however, a wicket was always around the corner. It fell to Yuzvendra Chahal, Behardien holing out to long-on for 39. Then Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen took 25 off the next two overs, leaving 50 to get off the last three, with six wickets in hand.It took only six balls for India to wipe out four of those wickets and end the contest abruptly, South Africa crumbling in their desperation for boundaries; Bhuvneshwar grabbed three of them, in the process picking up his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is, and a run-out did for the other.

Spurs could sign £52m "phenom" who’s better than Nicolas Jackson

Tottenham Hotspur may well be enjoying a brief period of success under their new boss, but there still remains an elephant in the room that Ange Postecoglou must address before deadline day later this week; replacing Harry Kane…

Who could replace Harry Kane?

The Australian is still yet to invest in a successor to Kane, despite the entire summer being dominated by rumours of his exit, which was confirmed over two weeks ago.

Whilst seemingly an impossible task to replace the England captain, there are options on the market that could more than make up for the huge amount of goals they are set to lose.

One such option has been outlined by journalist Rudy Galetti, who spoke to GIVEMESPORT on this topic:

"Tottenham are still looking at a replacement for Harry Kane and this is their first priority. Jonathan David and Gift Orban remain the preferred names in the list and talks will go ahead for them in the next days."

It was noted earlier in the window that the LOSC Lille man, who would represent a much more experienced and proven option, would cost around €60m (£52m). This would still leave plenty leftover from the fee gained from that aforementioned sale to Bayern Munich.

How good is Jonathan David?

Despite being only 23 years old, it feels like David has been around the top of the game for many years now.

Boasting a bulky 5 foot 9 frame, he is more than capable of competing with the combative style of English football, with his turn of pace an added asset to petrify defenders.

Such a well-rounded physical profile, combined with his lethal touch in front of goal, have made him one of Europe's most promising young frontmen.

jonathan-david-1

Just last season saw him score 24 times and assist a further four in Ligue 1, having built upon his 15-goal haul the year prior. With two goals in three league matches already this term, it seems the Canada international is once again poised to enjoy another clinical period.

The only question is for whom will those goals be scored?

Should he choose Spurs, the injection of proficiency that his presence would provide could be the catalyst that takes Postecoglou's early-tenure success to new heights, surpassing all expectations to propel them way up the Premier League table.

His acquisition would certainly aid in their efforts to outperform rivals Chelsea, given the similarities shared between the former Gent star and Mauricio Pochettino's new star forward, Nicolas Jackson.

Having signed from Villarreal just this summer, already the Senegalese star is catching the eye, with his electric play style having drawn praise from his new boss: "I think when Chelsea sign a player like him it's because they detect something important in quality and talent. He is a big talent, he needs time to adapt to the new club, the Premier League.

"He is young also, we need to help him to develop and evolve and be an important player for Chelsea.".

The Analyst seeks to emphasise their similarities, with Jackson boasting a 79.2% similarity score and also ranking in the top 9% for goals, compared to David's top 6%.

However, when placing their goalscoring and experience at the top level beside one another, a gulf quickly appears.

Last season saw the 22-year-old Jackson score just 13 goals in Spain across all competitions, with his £32m price tag a huge fee for someone so unproven. Meanwhile, David would cost slightly more but outranks Jackson in nearly every area.

Comparing them from last season, the Lille star boasts far more shot-creating actions (116 v 47), higher expected assists (5.7 v 2.0), a far higher expected goals tally (23.6 v 8.0) and even more tackles (24 v 14), all across the campaign, via FBref.

After all, the words of podcaster Tony Marinaro still ring true: "To all Canadians, enjoy Jonathan David. He is a student of the game. He does everything right. Simply put, he’s a phenom. One of the best strikers in the world is Canadian."

For just £20m more, Postecoglou could give his side an even bigger advantage over Chelsea, although, with the acquisition of the forward in question, he would likely set his ambitions at a higher level.

Arsenal Now Looking At Signing £21m "Lion"

Arsenal have now been provided with another update on their pursuit of Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson by journalist Rudy Galetti.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

With Jurrien Timber forecast to miss the majority of the season due to the serious knee injury he sustained in the 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest, Mikel Arteta is scouring the market for a replacement, and he has settled on a four-man shortlist.

Although he remains firmly in Galasaray's plans for now, Nelsson is one of the players on the manager's list of targets, with a deal seemingly doable, considering he has a release clause of just €25m (£21m) included in his contract with the Turkish club.

A move for the 24-year-old may end up being the most viable option available to the Gunners, as deals for the other centre-backs they are known to have an interest in could prove to be very tricky, with Crystal Palace set to hold out for more than £60m if they are to sell Marc Guehi.

Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba would also be very expensive, with the Bundesliga club demanding £50m if they are to sanction the Burkina Faso international's departure, while Barcelona have no interest in letting Eric Garcia leave on loan at this stage of the window.

With their shortlist thinning, Arsenal could end up making Nelsson one of their priority targets, and Galetti has recently told GiveMeSport that the defender is of growing interest to the north Londoners.

The journalist said: "Talking about the possible incoming moves after the injury of Jurrien Timber, Arsenal are looking for a new centre-back. On their list is four different options. One of them is Victor Nelsson. The Galatasaray defender has a release clause of €25m (£21m) and he's climbing position on Arsenal's shortlist, which has four different names."

Is Victor Nelsson signing for Arsenal?

It would be a surprise if Galatasaray are happy to let the Denmark international leave this summer, with board member Resit Omer Kukner clearly a big fan, considering how highly he spoke about him on X in March 2022, saying:

"Dear Victor Nelsson, You are Galatasaray's first Danish player. Beside being a great athlete devoted to his Club, your attitude on and off the pitch is winning hearts of millions. Your jersey gesture after the match is beyond description. You are our Danish lion!"

However, as the Galatasaray star has a £21m release clause in his contract, the club's hands are tied, and the player himself reportedly wants to move to the Premier League, with journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu claiming England would be his first choice, ahead of La Liga.

Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.

As such, Arsenal would seemingly stand a very good chance of signing the Danish defender, should they be willing to fork out £21m, and there are indications he could be a solid addition to Arteta's squad.

At 24, Nelsson is likely to be entering his prime over the next few years, but he has already done enough to establish himself as a vital player for Galatasaray over the past two seasons, making 86 appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal team news: £120k-p/w star must be benched v Man Utd

Arsenal are back in Premier League action today, however, they face a tough task as old rivals reunite at the Emirates, welcoming Manchester United to north London.

What's the latest Arsenal team news?

Having endured a stuttering start to the league season, with their two wins coming by just a sole goal, and having surrendered two points to ten-man Fulham just last week, Mikel Arteta will have a real headache regarding how he can turn his team around and get them thriving once again.

Fortunately, the travelling Red Devils have hardly set the world alight either, having come from two goals down most recently to defeat Nottingham Forest at home.

It is expected that the Spaniard could make wholesale changes in an effort to reignite his side's spark, with players such as Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah surely meriting a start after they shone from the bench against Fulham.

However, there is a far greater call that he must ruthlessly make, by surely handing David Raya his debut and finally ditching Aaron Ramsdale.

Who is Arsenal's number-one goalkeeper?

When the Gunners swooped for the former Brentford shot-stopper, many questioned the decision to unsettle the England international who had grown into a fine asset under Arteta.

However, at key moments last campaign the 25-year-old buckled, with his start to the season showcasing the continuation of a worrying trend that could be eradicated with the inclusion of Raya.

That, therefore, makes it difficult to pin down exactly who is their number one at this moment in time, especially after last week's shocker from Ramsdale.

aaron-ramsdale

Posting the worst rating of any throughout the Arsenal side, only Calvin Bassey on the entire pitch recorded lower, and he was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards, via Sofascore.

His positioning for Andreas Pereira's opener was ludicrous, and he was comically beaten from range as he stumbled backwards into his own goal.

Although not registered as an error that led to a goal, it has drawn criticism, with Martin Keown telling BBC Sport: "Ramsdale is so far off his line, he does this so often and I’m not sure why, and Pereira shoots into the near post.”

After all, just last season saw him make two errors that led to a goal, and four that led to a shot on his goal, via Sofascore.

It seems that errors are becoming more and more commonplace in his game, coincidentally proving right the claims of ex-keeper Paul Robinson from even before the £120k-per-week ace had signed for Arsenal: "I think he conceded too many goals at Bournemouth and made too many mistakes, and the same again at Sheffield United. I haven’t seen enough from him yet."

To compare this with Raya, who last term recorded the most saves in the division whilst also keeping an impressive 12 clean sheets for a far worse side, it seems that a gulf has started to open up between these two elite goalkeepers that could see the Spaniard now star.

It may be a strange tactic to employ two shot-stoppers of this quality in the same side, but in times like these, when Ramsdale perhaps cannot be trusted, it certainly helps to have someone as experienced and exceptional as the 27-year-old to step up.

Miller, Klaasen hammer spinners to keep series alive

South Africa had to win Saturday’s game to keep the series alive, and they did so in emphatic style, hitting Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal for 119 runs in 11.3 overs

The Report by Alagappan Muthu10-Feb-2018
Scorecard and ball-by- ball detailsIt was thrill-a-minute at the Bull Ring, testing the mettle of both teams and the nerves of packed crowd. For the longest time, India were dominant, Shikhar Dhawan’s 109 leading the way. Then lightning struck, literally, to stop play and allow South Africa some time to regroup. Led by a miserly Kagiso Rabada, they conceded only 92 runs in the last 16 overs and earned themselves a target of 290. That was top work considering the Wanderers rarely entertains ODI chases of less than 300.South Africa handed over-rate fine

South Africa were ruled to have missed their over-rate target by one over in Johannesburg, after allowing for various delays. Match referee Andy Pycroft subsequently – in accordance with the ICC’s rules – fined captain Aiden Markram 20% of his match fee, and the rest of the team 10% each. If South Africa pick up another over-rate offence under Markram in an ODI over the next 12 months, Markram will face a suspension.

And there would be more. Rain reduced the game to 28 overs and South Africa were told they needed 202 to keep the series alive. It was under this pressure – with their two best batsmen already dismissed – that they played shots that were absolutely jaw dropping and won moments that were nothing short of match-changing. At the centre of it all was a newbie.Heinrich Klaasen, the stand-in wicketkeeper, took a ball of wristspin – you know, the thing that’s made South Africa spontaneously combust in this series – from outside the cut strip and pulled it for a one-bounce four to square leg. He then launched a free hit delivery so far into the night sky that it came down with a bit of star dust. An unbeaten 43 off 27 in a highest of pressure scenarios to seal victory is a grand return. “Best feeling in my career,” the 26-year old gushed at the presentation.David Miller, at the other end, was equally destructive. He even one-upped his partner, sending a six so far into the crowd that the ball had to be changed. Clearly, he hasn’t taken too well to India making him look like a walking wicket. Ironically, it was he was bowled neck and crop by Yuzvendra Chahal, off a no-ball, that he unfurled his full and devastating power. By the end of the night, India’s wristspinners nursed figures that read 6-0-51-2 and 5.3-0-68-1.Heinrich Klaasen struck some lusty blows•AFP

India would feel rather hard done by considering the weather in Johannesburg played a part in spoiling their batting effort in the middle overs and returned later in the day to give South Africa the kind of clarity that they did not seem capable of when playing Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav earlier in the series. It was hit out or get out and with almost nothing to lose, Klaasen and Miller indulged in batting that was very near maniacal. Andile Phehlukwayo was worse. He faced five balls, and walked back with 23 runs, including the winning hit. Those cameos put the highest scorer of the day wondering what if. Bowlers cramping Dhawan for room is normal in any form of cricket. His abandoning that trademark, off-side dominant game and still managing to be a threat? Not so much. A century on his 100th ODI needs no added frills, not after it came with the addendum that he was the first Indian to do so, but sending out a message that he isn’t as one-dimensional as he seems must have felt sweet.South Africa did not allow him any runs on the cut until the 43rd delivery he faced. He went for the shot often enough, and was lucky to avoid chopping onto his stumps, but eventually decided that there were other ways to score and he was good enough to exploit them. At one point, he was 85 off only 75 balls, with flicks reminiscent of Sanath Jayasuriya and drives – the first one especially – that could fit into a Matthew Hayden highlight reel. Dhawan made 69 runs in the arc from long-on to long leg, and only 21 between long-off and third man.But with India on 197 for 2 in the 35th over, a break in play for nearly an hour upset the momentum to such an extent that their top-scorer ended up spooning a catch to mid-off seven balls after play resumed. No sooner had Dhawan walked back that Ajinkya Rahane pulled a short ball straight to deep midwicket. Suddenly, two new batsmen were at the crease: Shreyas Iyer, playing his first innings on this tour and MS Dhoni, who needs time early in his innings to be properly destructive.South Africa recognised their chance, which was a miracle in itself considering Virat Kohli has had them under his thumb this series. He was outstanding on Saturday too, moving to fifth place on the list of top ODI run-getters for India, but his wicket for 75 in the 32nd over, minutes before the weather soured, changed the game.Rabada had a lower-middle order in front of him. And he turned so very hostile. He didn’t care that he held an older ball in his hand, didn’t care that it wasn’t zipping through as before, he kept digging it hard into the pitch, cramping batsmen and hitting them on the body. His final five overs – bowled from the 33rd to the 49th – cost only 28 runs and yielded only one boundary.Rabada also took out India’s hitter Hardik Pandya – with ample help from Aiden Markram. South Africa’s stand-in captain was at cover when a full-blooded slash came his way. He took a split second to position himself, then leapt back, stuck his right hand up and pulled off a screamer that would have had the man he was standing in for – Faf du Plessis – nodding with approval. With Rabada in charge of the final 10 overs, India could scramble only 59 runs. Even Dhoni could only get seven runs off 10 balls in the head-to-head.South Africa ended the day with a sixth straight victory on pink day, while off the field, 1.6 million Rand was raised to fight breast cancer.
