Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales condemn Australia to heaviest defeat after record-smashing 481 for 6

England 481 for 6 (Hales 147, Bairstow 139) beat Australia 239 (Rashid 4-47, Moeen 3-28) by 242 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsEngland thrashed the highest score in the history of ODI cricket to set up the most crushing defeat – in terms of runs – ever inflicted upon Australia. On the same Trent Bridge ground where they plundered the previous record – 444 for 3 against Pakistan in August 2016 in the most recent completed ODI on the ground – England thrashed 21 sixes and 41 fours in becoming the first side to reach 450 in ODI history. Only once in the 56-year history of List A cricket – when Surrey scored 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007 – has any side scored more. The result means England have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Australia have now lost five ODI series in succession and eight of their last nine ODIs against England. Indeed, they have won only two of their last 16 ODIs against all opponents. It is the first time England have won back-to-back ODI series against Australia since 1986-87 and, with two games to go, they now have a chance to complete their first 5-0 whitewash over them. They won 4-0 in 2012 with one game abandoned due to poor weather. The foundation of England’s total was high-class centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales and the quickest half-century in their ODI history from Eoin Morgan. For Bairstow, in magnificent form, it was his fourth ODI century in six innings and his sixth in 19 since his recall less than a year ago. He now has the highest batting average – 65.76 – of any man to open in ODI cricket on more than 10 occasions. The fact he is one of only two men in the top 50 of that list with a strike-rate in excess of 100 (his is 114.19) demonstrates how well he is batting. The fact that the other is his opening partner, Jason Roy, demonstrates how the game has developed and how England have been at the vanguard of that change. The pair combined perfectly here. With Roy murderous against the short ball – he played a hook in the opening overs that travelled far enough to require a visa – and Bairstow in the sort of form that makes a length delivery an opportunity to drive or pull, they posted an opening stand of 159 in 19.3 overs; the 10th highest opening partnership against Australia in ODI history. There were a couple of nervous moments. Australia called for a review when they thought they detected an inside edge on one from Stanlake that nipped back at Roy (replays showed the ball brushed his trousers), while Bairstow was dropped on 30 by Marcus Stoinis running back from mid-off and reprieved on review having been given out leg before attempting to sweep Ashton Agar. Those moments apart, this was one-way traffic. On the sort of pitch that most batsmen would like to whisk to Paris for the weekend – and most bowlers would like to never see again – England gorged and feasted on runs until they dripped down their chins.Hales soon dispelled any thought that the wicket of Roy – attempting an unwise second run – would ease Australia’s pain. A day after he had admitted – quite rightly – that he was likely to be the man to make way once Ben Stokes returned, he provided a strong case for his retention with a 62-ball century; the sixth-fastest in England’s history, all of which have come since the 2015 World Cup. Back on his home ground – the ground where he thrashed 171 against Pakistan in 2016 – he showed tremendous power but also nice placement and shot selection. Nearly two-thirds of his runs were heaved through – or over – the leg side.It looked, for a while, as if England might reach 500. Despite losing Bairstow, heaving down the throat of deep midwicket, and Jos Buttler, deceived by a slower ball, Morgan thrashed a 21-ball half-century. Having recovered from the back spasm that kept him out of the Cardiff match, Morgan not only recorded the quickest fifty in England’s ODI history but passed Ian Bell’s record to become England’s most prolific ODI run-scorer in the process. While Australia tried just about everything in the field – going round the wicket, bowling short, bowling full, even trying eight bowlers – none of it made much difference. AJ Tye, who became just the 11th man to concede 100 in an ODI innings and just the fourth to do so in fewer than 10 overs, had the ugliest figures but this was a day all of them will wake up screaming about in years to come.Australia’s reply started well enough. D’Arcy Short carved David Willey’s first ball for six and his second for four, while Travis Head brushed off a painful blow from a Mark Wood bouncer (Wood exceeded 91 mph in that first spell) to help Australia keep up with the rate for the first 12 overs. But that target – that vast target – required endless risk-taking. And after Short chipped one to mid-on, Head poked a return catch to Moeen Ali and Shaun Marsh lofted to long-on. Aaron Finch, attempting to repeat a six clobbered over long-on, was deceived by one nicely held back by Adil Rashid (Finch, moved into the middle-order to combat spin, has been dismissed by it three times in 13 balls this series) and Marcus Stoinis attempted an unwise second to Bairstow’s arm in the deep. By the time Glenn Maxwell was brilliantly caught at long-on by a leaping Liam Plunkett, it was clear this was to be a rout. Never had England won by such a large run margin in ODI cricket. England’s spinners – a key point of difference between the sides in this series – finished with seven wickets between them. Are such conditions – white balls offering little lateral movement and surfaces offering certainty of pace and carry – good for the game? The debate will continue. Certainly there were aspects of this match – mostly some outrageous hitting – that created an entertaining and memorable spectacle. And there is no doubt that the groundstaff at Trent Bridge have produced exactly what was asked of them. We can expect more of this – and not just at Trent Bridge – during next year’s World Cup.There is, though, an inflationary aspect to boundaries. At some stage, they begin to lose just a little of their novelty and, perhaps, appeal. Suffice to say, all pretence of maintaining a balance between bat and ball disappears in such circumstances. Bowlers compete in much the same way a clay pigeon does when someone goes shooting. It was a remarkable day’s cricket, but you wouldn’t want every day to be like this. There are a couple more caveats, too. This Australia attack, missing at least three first-choice seamers as it is, is not the strongest and the relatively short boundaries meant that, a couple of times, top-edges carried for sixes. On Australian grounds they may have gone to hand. But there have been weaker attacks and shorter boundaries. This was still an incredible effort from a remarkable England batting line-up that is playing wonderfully fearless, innovative and powerful cricket. As this series has progressed, it has become hard to fathom how roles have reversed since the 2015 World Cup when one of these sides lifted the trophy and the other was humiliated. It will amount to little until England do it in a global tournament but you can be sure that no side – and certainly no bowling attack – will relish facing them in conditions like this.

Joe Hart plays cricket as England progress to World Cup semi-finals

England’s former World Cup goalkeeper turned out for Shrewsbury in his first league cricket match since 2007

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jul-2018Club cricket up and down the country took a back seat to World Cup football at the weekend, with England’s 3pm quarter-final against Sweden on Saturday causing postponements galore as captains struggled to rally their teams. One man who had more reason than most to take his eyes off the events in Russia, however, was England’s former World Cup goalkeeper Joe Hart, who chose instead to turn out for Shrewsbury in what would prove to be his first league match since 2007.Hart, 31, won the last of his 75 England caps against Brazil in November and had been his country’s first-choice keeper at both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.However, he was overlooked for the 23-man squad for the on-going World Cup, with Jordan Pickford, Gareth Southgate’s preferred pick, going on to make a string of world-class saves in a man-of-the-match-winning display in Samara.Hart’s contribution to his day of sport on Saturday was rather less telling. He came in to bat at No.9 for Shrewsbury, who started the day in third place in the Birmingham & District Premier League, and made 6 from 11 balls in a total of 250 for 8 from 55 overs. And despite a best haul of 5 for 13 in his previous appearances for the club, Hart was not called upon to bowl as Knowle & Dorridge made 203 for 9 in reply. Mike Barnard (6 for 48) and Henry Blofield (2 for 52) shared the bulk of the honours as Shrewsbury fell just short of forcing the win.”Joe was a credit to himself, his cricket club and his community yesterday,” tweeted Knowle bowler Chris Cheslin. “Great to see him back on the cricket field enjoying the game surrounded by his friends and family.”As a teenager, Hart had been in the same Worcestershire youth team as Steven Davies, the former England wicketkeeper, but put his cricket ambitions on hold as his football career developed.

Newcastle: Toon could sign Willock 2.0 in "wonderful" £60m star

Newcastle United look a force to be reckoned with once again this season, but despite the club's successes, it seems that manager Eddie Howe is still looking to bolster his ranks come January.

Who could Newcastle sign next?

The Toon boss' strategy is hardly surprising; Newcastle boast wealth unrivalled by the majority of their Premier League foes and have been steadily improving the squad ever since the PIF takeover two years ago.

With this in mind, the Magpies might be preparing a raid on rivals Arsenal for disgruntled midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, with TEAMtalk reporting that the club officials will meet imminently to discuss transfer plans, with the 23-year-old at the heart of discussions.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

TEAMtalk have also recently highlighted West Ham United's interest in the player, but that the Gunners would only consider a sale if their £60m valuation is met.

How good is Emile Smith Rowe?

That exorbitant price tag is undoubtedly a deterrent for interested parties – for West Ham, it would mean breaking their record transfer fee; Newcastle, putting him on the same pedestal as club-record acquisition Alexander Isak, who joined for £63m.

And for a midfielder who has sat on the fringe for some time – a talented midfielder, mind – this will likely need whittling down before concrete negotiations can commence.

Smith Rowe is now fully fit after enduring a lengthy layoff that cost him prominence at the Emirates Stadium, but has only made two brief substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, sitting on the bench for six outings.

He is undoubtedly a quality-filled gem – dubbed "wonderful" by pundit Gary Neville – who could make a marked impact on Newcastle's team, with the 2021/22 league season illustrating his first-class attributes.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

As per Sofascore, the £40k-per-week dynamo scored ten goals from just 21 starts that year, completing 87% of his passes and succeeding with 60% of his dribbles, hailed for his "incredibly prolific" form by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Securing his signature, Newcastle could repeat their success in signing Joe Willock, who joined the Tynesiders on an initial loan deal in January 2021 before wrapping up a £25m move in the summer.

Having enjoyed an immense goalscoring run of his own during that loan spell, bagging eight times from 14 matches – including a seven-match scoring streak – Newcastle may well emulate their signing with Smith Rowe.

Willock is described as a midfielder with "limitless" potential by writer Simon Collings, and while he is out injured at the moment, his qualities are clear after serving a central role in his club's sensational 2022/23 campaign, landing a top-four spot.

With two interchanging stars of impressive technical ability, Howe would have exactly what his squad needs to compete across multiple fronts and push for Champions League football and silverware with regularity.

As relayed by Fabrizio Romano in June 2021, Arteta was emphatic in proclaiming the players' positions in the Emirates Stadium side's plans, but Willock was soon to leave permanently, and Smith Rowe might now be next.

Perhaps Arteta was confident in his squad's options, and perhaps he was right; Arsenal aren't exactly struggling under the Spaniard's wing, but both players could now unite to prove their worth with Newcastle, starring as the Magpies take flight.

Man Utd: Solskjaer’s "massive waste of talent" has seen his value crash by £39.5m

Manchester United have struggled to replicate the form they displayed at times throughout 2022/23 during the current campaign as Erik ten Hag finds himself under some pressure.

United have won just five matches out of 11 this season, losing four times in the Premier League while also slipping to defeat against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League as their hopes of reaching the last 16 are drifting out of their hands.

Despite luring the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana to the club, the Dutchman missed out on several players who could’ve taken the Red Devils to the next level.

He has also failed to inspire some current United players to take that next step and become truly world-class and Jadon Sancho is a fine example of this, having failed to replicate the form he showed at Borussia Dortmund.

What has happened to Jadon Sancho?

The winger made 41 appearances under Ten Hag last term, scoring seven goals but the season was littered with inconsistency – including three months of absence between November and February – and he was even training by himself after missing out on a place in England’s World Cup squad.

A solid spell towards the end of the season looked as though it would revitalise the youngster, yet he managed just three appearances from the substitutes bench across United’s opening three league matches of 2023/24.

He hasn’t been seen since however, as he was axed ahead of the Arsenal clash at the start of September, with Ten Hag saying afterwards: "On his performance in training we didn't select him."

Sancho responded by releasing a statement on X, where he said: Please don't believe everything you read! I have conducted myself in training very well this week.

"I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won't get into, I've been a scapegoat for a long time which isn't fair!"

This apparent friction has stalled whatever progress he made at Old Trafford towards the end of last season and his market value has dipped as a result.

How much did Man Utd sign Jadon Sancho for?

Sancho had registered 114 goal contributions – 50 goals and 64 assists – across just 137 games at Dortmund, and he was arguably one of the most in-demand young talents on the continent during the summer of 2021.

The winger had starred for England during their run to the Euro 2020 final, and it appeared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had earmarked the player as someone who could not only improve the United side straight away but be a mainstay in the squad over the coming years.

The Norwegian finally secured his signature, splashing out £73m to lure him from Germany, and he was lavished with praise by former Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus, who said: "He’s a natural footballer. A player who has everything: fantastic speed, great technique, a good eye for his colleagues and that key pass. For me he is a perfect player.”

While he may have been near perfect in the Bundesliga, his spell in England so far has been rather underwhelming, and it now appears as though the £73m that was shelled out to sign him has turned into a colossal waste of money.

What is Jadon Sancho’s market value now?

After two full seasons at United, Sancho is now only valued at €38.7m (£33.5m) according to Football Transfers which represents a staggering decline of 54% from his original transfer fee.

Indeed, his value has continued to decline ever since joining the Red Devils two summers ago and unless he embarks on a stunning resurgence throughout the remainder of the season, the club will struggle to recoup even half of his £73m fee if and when they sell up.

It is a shame to see the player struggling to showcase his talents, especially when he lit up the Bundesliga with his creative abilities and goal-scoring ability.

Why has it gone so wrong at United, and will he ever recapture his previous scintillating form?

Why is Jadon Sancho worth this much?

With Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo among the new signings heading into the 2021/22 season, Solskjaer would have been hopeful of his team's chances of securing their first silverware since 2017.

The Englishman played 38 games across all competitions during his debut campaign in Manchester, yet he struggled to really get off the ground in terms of goals or assists.

He had scored 16 goals and grabbed 20 assists during his final season in Germany with Dortmund, but he couldn’t adapt well to English football as he managed just three goals and three assists, failing to inspire the club to glory.

Indeed, across the whole squad for Premier League performances, he ranked seventh for goals and assists (six), 13th for shots on target per game (0.3), fifth for big chances created (five) and fourth for successful dribbles per game (1.6), clearly indicating that he didn’t have the desired impact the Old Trafford faithful expected.

He managed to improve slightly last term under the Dutchman with regard to goals and assists, ranking third across the squad (nine) while also ranking eighth for shots on target per game (0.4), fifth for big chances created (six) and second for successful dribbles per game (1.3).

These displays, while inconsistent at times, evidently showed some progress towards a brighter future at the club, yet it hasn’t materialised, and he still finds himself on the sidelines after his fallout with the Dutchman.

Sancho is now at a crossroads in his career where it looks as though he will have to depart Manchester in order to return to the sort of form which secured the big-money move to England in the first place.

It's a huge shame for all parties, with journalist Muhammad Butt notably saying it was a "massive waste of talent", and indeed they now must be prepared to lose a lot of money when they eventually sell him on.

This looks inevitable, especially given the events which have taken place recently and Ten Hag must be careful in the future to avoid the same mistakes as his predecessors.

'Squeeze your butt tight' – Reims boss Will Still reveals 'plan' for PSG super subs Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele & Randal Kolo Muani after masterminding shock 2-2 draw at Parc des Princes

Reims did the unthinkable on Sunday as they managed to hold a much stronger Paris Saint-Germain side to a 2-2 draw at Parc des Princes. The visitors took an early lead against the run of play but Luis Enrique's side responded soon by scoring two quick goals. At the stroke of halftime, striker Ousmane Diakite cleverly beat the PSG high line and netted the equalising goal.

Desperate for a third goal, Enrique decided to make three attacking changes as he introduced Randal Kolo Muani, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in the final 20 minutes of the game.

When Reims manager Still was asked about his plan after the PSG trio took the field, the Belgian told , "When they come into play? You squeeze your butt tight and you hope… No, I'm joking! (Laughs) We thought they were going to start. We had a plan, an idea in mind before the match. So we don't have to change too much.

"We have to stay disciplined. Come and split (on the) side when it comes to one-on-one so as not to experience this kind of situation. We have to maintain discipline and organization. Always have the idea of pushing as soon as a back pass is given, we have to push, push, gain meters and try to stay as organized as possible."

Mercurial French winger Mbappe did not make it to Enrique's starting lineup for the third time since the news of him leaving the club for Real Madrid in the summer became public. There have been rumours of trouble brewing between the player and the manager, although the 25-year-old has refuted such claims.

Spurs once tried to sign £32m ace, he then became a £130m superstar & better than Ginola

Tottenham Hotspur have played host to plenty of talented players, managed by a plethora of intelligent managers, across their rich and lengthy history.

However, in recent memory, it almost seems like the two have evaded one another, with stars such as Luka Modric and Gareth Bale having been produced just years before Mauricio Pochettino would build a side worthy of their presence.

Such has been the frustration surrounding the club across the past few seasons, it was valid to voice frustrations that head coaches like the Argentine were seldom backed. However, this seemingly spurred Daniel Levy to shift aggressively in the other direction, dismissing the now-Chelsea boss in favour of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and later Antonio Conte: three disastrous appointments.

Seeking a return to the free-flowing football that has the potential to unite the club, Ange Postecoglou is now at the helm and has enjoyed a fine start to life in north London.

Whilst enjoying the present, and praising the recent work of the chairman, that does not expunge his failures of the past which often stunted their growth towards the pinnacle of English football. It goes without saying that the most successful periods in their history came well before Levy began his time at the club in 2000, having only overseen one trophy during that period.

A man who typifies that earlier notion of a top player featuring in a squad that is not worthy of his calibre was David Ginola, who actually left right around the time that the 62-year-old businessman completed his takeover of the Lilywhites.

How many goals did David Ginola score?

Having joined from Newcastle United in 1997, the silky Frenchman had endeared himself to the Toon Army with a string of stellar performances as the front man of Kevin Keegan's attempted revolution.

Seeking to turn the Magpies into a major European force, he pursued the 56-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain and got his man. However, with 23 goal contributions across 76 games for the club, Ginola's stint was marred by the disappointment of the 1995/96 season, as despite finishing a strong second, they actually led the league by ten points in January.

Even adding Alan Shearer to their lineup could not help them over the line, and another second-place finish saw him seek greener pastures, a decision reinforced by the resignation of Keegan. Spurs would then profit.

However, the forward's time at a new club would share many similarities with that Tyneside spell, as he starred for a side that could not reach the heights he required. After all, in 1999 Ginola would emulate Dennis Bergkamp with a second Player of the Year award in the same season, becoming the first player in Premier League history to win it while at a club that finished the season outside of the top four.

His majesty was outlined by former Newcastle centre-back Steve Howey: "Everyone knew straight away how good he was." This was a notion supported by ex-Spurs defender Justin Edinburgh: "We had seen how well he had done since arriving at Newcastle. It was a very exciting time and obviously the lads were buzzing with his signing."

He continued: "He took his football very seriously and he was someone who wanted to win," says Edinburgh. "He had an opinion, and it wasn't always what I thought was right or what was best for me, but he was a big character and a good mixer in the group."

Such was the trickster's quality, the full-back was even willing to allow the winger free reign: "Luxury players do other things. At times he would leave me exposed and I came in for some flak, but when you have someone who can produce that moment of magic then is that a luxury player? I think that's someone who is a creator or a catalyst. Everyone plays their part in a team and he played a massive part in ours."

However, he would exit north London with a sole EFL Cup, and left having scored 20 and assisted 20 more across 121 appearances for the Lilywhites. A mesmeric three years that lives long in the memory, but a legacy that could have been overshone had Levy gone deeper into his pocket to sign Eden Hazard when he had the opportunity.

How good was Eden Hazard?

A similarly enigmatic ace, the Belgian winger may have overseen a dramatic career nosedive since leaving Chelsea, but is widely recognised as one of the greatest to have ever graced the Premier League.

After all, across the 2018/19 season at Stamford Bridge alone, the 32-year-old nearly matched Ginola's tally during his entire stay at Spurs. Hazard would score 16 and assist 15 in the league alone, earning his £130m move to Real Madrid and praise from former Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier: "Hazard is head and shoulders above everyone in the league so far this season. I saw him at Southampton when he didn't have his best game but was still a huge danger every time he got the ball."

His fellow pundit Charlie Nicholson would agree: "He's magnificent technically, he's the best footballer in the Premier League and the most exciting." Then, journalist Liam Canning would cap off such praise by writing: "Eden Hazard has scored an incredible solo goal tonight. This is season is going to be huge from the Belgian wizard. Why he is currently the best the Premier League has to offer."

Did Spurs nearly sign Eden Hazard?

Signed by Chelsea for just £32m in 2012, Harry Redknapp actually regaled a story where they could have instead signed the magician, who would go on to win two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues and numerous other domestic honours, alongside his own PFA Player of the Year award.

The former Portsmouth boss would tell talkSPORT: "I tried to sign him for Tottenham.

“Joe Cole was playing with him at Lille and Joe rang me saying,’ Harry, I’m playing with a boy at Lille and he’s the best player I’ve ever played with’, and Joe played with some top players at Chelsea.

“So I went over to Lille four times, but the first time I saw enough, I knew. I kept turning up trying to actually meet with him. I watched to have a chat with him."

However, the classic frugality of Levy was set to scupper another deal for the club, as the 76-year-old former boss would continue: "Eventually I met with him in a hotel and spent an hour or so chatting with him. He wanted to come to Tottenham at that time, but unfortunately the deal didn’t get done. It was a shame."

One of the great 'what could have been' stories, had Spurs secured this deal, perhaps it could have been them who benefitted from the bountiful silverware Hazard's presence ushered in at Stamford Bridge, usurping Ginola's legacy with ease.

  • Alexander-Arnold hailed rivals as team 'built to win'
  • But says trophies 'mean more' to Liverpool
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are competing with City for the Premier League and FA Cup trophies this season as the Reds hope to stop Pep Guardiola's side from defending two of the three titles they claimed in 2022-23. Anfield hero Alexander-Arnold admits his side face a daunting task in dethroning the European and English champions, but says that his side will enjoy the success more than their rivals.

    WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

He told : "It's tough. We're up against a machine that's built to win – that's the simplest way to describe City and their organisation. Looking back on this era, although they've won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially. How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool and City will go head to head on Sunday in a clash that may prove decisive in the fight for the Premier League title. Alexander-Arnold's side sit just one point above the reigning champions going into the game, while Arsenal are a point further adrift of the leaders.
