Simon Harmer hadn’t had a particularly rewarding Blast season. Unstoppable in the Championship, he had generally become a mere mortal over 20 overs. Then Derbyshire, in their first T20 Finals Day, had to contend with him on a turning Edgbaston pitch and the story changed as his destructive display pointed Essex towards a comprehensive victory and added another satisfying memory to an outstanding summer.Harmer has been Essex’s Championship showstopper: his 78 wickets at 18.12 are the prime reason why they have a title showdown with Somerset at Taunton next week. As Essex’s captain in the Blast, however, he had mustered 10 wickets all season and disappeared for nine an over. He was just another player hoping that Edgbaston might look favourably upon him.All that changed in a second semi-final in which Derbyshire succumbed meekly on a turning surface, falling 34 runs short of Essex’s challenging 160 for 5. They didn’t play spin particularly well, and a couple of their dismissals could fairly be described as naïve, but when it comes to facing Harmer they are not alone in that charge.Harmer finished with 4 for 19, his tranquillity never threatened, and he had quite an ally, too, in Aron Nijjar, a 24-year-old left-arm spinner from Romford, who had the onerous task of replacing the modish Australian leggie Adam Zampa on Finals Day in only his second Twenty20 match, conceded 14 runs in his first four balls, but lived to tell a glorious tale as Essex won a T20 semi-final at the fifth attempt.Harmer and Nijjar took three wickets apiece in the space of 58 balls, five of them hitting the stumps. When the sixth batsman to perish, Alex Hughes, was lured down the pitch by Nijjar and stumped, so fell Derbyshire’s top-scorer, on 23. There was another wicket for a spinner, too, when Dan Lawrence bowled Fynn Hudson-Prentice.Harmer’s first ball jolted Derbyshire, their captain, Billy Godleman, the second batsmen to fall as he turned one sharply to hit the left-hander’s off stump. He repeated the dose in his third over against Leus du Plooy, another left-hander, another delivery that turned big. Next ball, Anuj Dal, determined to use his feet, ran at one and was bowled through the gate. His last wicket was Daryn Smit, who tried to reverse sweep him past two fielders at backward point, the most befuddled shot of all.”I’m used to seeing the ball disappear so it’s nice to bowl on something that suits me,” Harmer said. Essex started their Blast campaign in the South Group so badly that they have essentially been playing knockout cricket for six matches, knowing that one more defeat would be fatal, and the knowledge has improved them.Nijjar will attract less attention, but his contribution was, in a way, all the more remarkable because he had not bowled a single delivery in Essex 1st XI cricket all season. His last game of note was a 2nd XI match against Hampshire at Southampton in the first week of August. When Wayne Madsen sniffed vulnerability and struck him for 4-6-4 in his first four balls, things looked ominous; for him to then bowl Madsen round his legs, trying to sweep, was a crucial response.Derbyshire were the last of the 18 counties to reach Finals Day and for all but the most committed follower of county cricket they could hardly have been more of an unknown quantity. Names did not as much trip off the tongue as go clean out of the mind. Obscurity, for a few hours at least, was in vogue. A side that reached the final stages by toppling Lancashire at Old Trafford were clearly capable of being better than the sum of their parts, and they will be deflated by their display.Essex took command with an opening stand of 78 in 8.1 overs, Cameron Delport the dominant factor. His 55 from 31 balls gave him 408 runs for the tournament and the highest strike rate, at 172.15, of any of the 13 batsmen who had passed that 400-run mark. He might have fallen early, a leg-side swing against Logan van Beek falling safely when he was only 6, but his strokeplay became increasingly daunting until he deposited Hughes to long-off.Once Delport had been silenced, Derbyshire shook themselves down and gradually got back into the match on a grippy surface that suited their medium-paced mix. Lawrence, who has grown into the T20 format this season by adopting a more aggressive approach, made little impact as he carved Hughes’ knuckle ball to third man; Ryan ten Doeschate, lbw to Luis Reece’s offcutter, also missed out.Tom Westley, Delport’s opening partner, played the other innings of substance, 39 from 34 balls, although he, too, had fortune on his side, on 13, when van Beek failed to throw him out from mid-on. Westley’s departure to Reece at deep backward square leg preceded a problematic finish for Essex as they failed to find the boundary for 37 deliveries, from Ravi Bopara’s third-man dab off Reece to Adam Wheater’s square drive four balls from the end when Ravi Rampaul narrowly missed his yorker.Bopara has crabbed all season about batting as a finisher at No. 6, and who found himself up at five for Finals Day. His scoring rate in the closing overs has been spectacular, justifying his place in the order, but it was a more restrained Bopara (28 from 23 balls when a ramp shot went awry) who guided then to 160 for 5. It was easily enough.
Aston Villa have been named as one of several sides ready to make a bid for a Premier League outcast this summer, but will face Serie A competition for his signature.
Villa eyeing Champions League football
Aston Villa are on course for Champions League football for the first time since 1982/83 thanks to an excellent season under Unai Emery. With 11 games left of the season, they sit firmly in fourth place in the Premier League, five points ahead of Tottenham (though they have a game in hand) and a massive 11 points clear of Manchester United in sixth place.
They also remain in the Europa Conference League and begin their road to the final with a two-legged affair against Ajax, where they will be hoping that Emery's uncanny ability to win games of knockout football will come to the fore.
Despite having plenty left to play for this season, attention has already turned to the summer transfer window and there is plenty of speculation surrounding several Villa Park stars amid financial fair play concerns.
However, there are also suggestions that incomings are also under consideration.

As per a report from TeamTalk, Villa are one of the clubs keen on a move for Arsenal outcast Kieran Tierney this summer, with Celtic and a host of Italian clubs also reportedly ready to bid for the 26-year-old.
They claim that Tierney will be allowed to leave north London permanently this summer and that Arsenal will be holding out for a fee of around £26m to let him depart. This would allow them to make a profit on the £25m they paid Celtic for his services in 2019, and also fund the reportedly hefty summer transfer business of their own, which is thought to involve additions at striker and in central midfield.
Given his situation in the north London pecking order, however it seems unlikely that the Gunners will be receiving any offers in that region.
Tierney has two years left to run on his £110,000 per week contract in north London, but does not appear to have a future at the Emirates Stadium. He has spent this season on loan with Spanish outfit Real Sociedad and has done little to suggest that he will be able to add anything to Mikel Arteta's title-challenging squad, with Jakub Kiwior having looked more at-ease with the left-back role in recent weeks and Oleksandr Zinchenko still expected to be an important figure from that position.
That does not make Tierney a bad left back though. Former Chelsea star Ashley Cole showered him with praise during his first season at the Emirates, explaining: "When he’s in the team, they are a different team, he’s willing to defend, he’s that kind of leader and warrior they need in this team."
His defensive numbers speak for themselves, with the Scot among the finest in Europe when it comes to 1vs1 defending.

Signed by Emery initially at Arsenal, the Spaniard clearly had something in mind on how to get the best out of the ex-Celtic man and could well make another play for him this summer with the future of Lucas Digne looking less than secure at Villa Park.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have developed a successful transfer strategy over the years.
Their recruitment is almost always spot on, while they have also developed a habit of selling players for more than they’re worth.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at a former player that Wolves played a blinder with by letting him go.
Helder Costa’s time at Wolves
In 2017, Helder Costa joined the Wanderers for £13m, becoming the club's record signing at the time, just six months after joining the club on loan.
Prior to the permanent deal in January, Costa starred in the Championship for Wolves, netting nine times and picking up seven assists across all competitions. The winger ended the campaign with ten goals and eight assists in 30 league starts.
The attacker would go on to play fewer games during Wolves’ promotion campaign, and in his first season in the Premier League, he scored once and created two goals in 25 matches, with Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez, and Diogo Jota mainly taking up the attacking roles.
Helder Costa’s career after Wolves
In the 2019/20 season, Costa joined Leeds United on loan from Wolves for the season, where he helped the team earn promotion to the Premier League.
The Angolan winger played an important role, featuring in 43 games over the season. During that time, he scored four goals and registered four assists, but he performed well enough for the Peacocks to splash out £16m for his signature when the loan expired.
But once again, he featured much less in the top flight, starting just 13 games, with the signature of Raphinha decreasing his minutes.

Fast forward another year, and he was once again sent on loan, this time joining Valencia in Spain, where he played 22 times in La Liga but failed to score. At the end of his spell in Spain, his estimated market value had decreased to just over £4m.
Last season, the 5 foot 10 attacker joined Al-Ittihad on loan from Leeds, in what would be his most recent and potentially final adventure in his footballing career. Over 18 games in the Saudi Pro League, Costa scored three goals.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
Fast forward to today, and Costa is without a club after Leeds and the player agreed to part ways in the summer. Although he could have been playing this month for his nation in the Africa Cup of Nations, despite playing heavily in the qualifiers, he turned down the offer.
Selling Costa for £16m to Leeds was an absolute masterclass by Wolves, who would have definitely lost plenty of funds on the attacker if he had stayed at the club any longer, just like Leeds have.
The former Benfica wonderkid is now worth £2.4m, and although he’s only 30 years old, his career could unfortunately be cut short if another club doesn’t come knocking.

Derbyshire captain lacks support in fine innings as Lancashire keep up promotion push

A century from Derbyshire skipper Billy Godleman ensured his side posted something approaching a competitive score against promotion-chasing Lancashire on day one of this Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash.Godleman’s 20th first class ton was the runaway highlight of a scrappy innings from the visitors who were bowled out for a below par 244, thanks chiefly to Richard Gleeson’s excellent figures of 5 for 64.Despite Godleman’s efforts, Lancashire, who can confirm promotion back to Division One this week if they get one more point than Glamorgan, will feel confident they can push on throughout day two having lost just the wicket of Alex Davies to reach 20 for 1 by the close of play.Having elected to bat, openers Godleman and former Lancashire starlet Luis Reece, attacked from the start, with Godleman in particular determined to throw his bat at anything bowled off line by Tom Bailey and Saqib Mahmood. The partnership had passed the half-century mark before Derbyshire experienced anything like a scare with Reece given a lifeline by Keaton Jennings, who was dropped badly at slip off Glenn Maxwell’s third ball of the match.Reece failed to take advantage however, and in Maxwell’s next over, he edged through to keeper Dane Vilas, who claimed a juggling catch to dismiss the opener for 16 and break an opening stand of 66.Godleman brought up his half-century just before lunch with a square drive through point off Gleeson, but the visitors suffered a blow when Wayne Madsen was trapped in front by Gleeson for 27 just before lunch.Gleeson was soon proving to be Derbyshire’s chief tormentor as he completed a stunning spell of 4 for 15 in six overs either side of the break to decimate the away side’s middle order.South African Leus du Plooy was the first to depart for just two, with Gleeson comprehensively rearranging his stumps, before Alex Hughes edged behind to Dane Vilas for a four ball duck. When Gleeson then trapped Harvet Hosein in front for 0, Derbyshire were 123 for 5 and staring down the barrel with only Godleman’s desire to counter attack keeping Lancashire from further success.Matt Critchley joined Godleman and the pair put on 58 for the sixth wicket, until a fired up Bailey claimed his first victim when the Lancashire-born Critchley was adjudged lbw for 22.Godleman, who took full advantage of a short boundary on the Stretford side of the ground following the recent Ashes Test match, bludgeoned 16 fours and one six to reach 111, but his long vigil finally ended in the ninth over after tea when he was trapped in front by the returning Mahmood, who quickly added the wicket of Anuj Dal who was bowled first ball with a vicious in-swinger.Gleeson claimed his fourth fifth wicket haul of the season with the dismissal of Fynn Hudson-Prentice for 18, before some effective swishing from Ravi Rampaul and Hamidullah Qadri took the total to 244 when Rampaul spooned one to Matt Parkinson to give Mahmood figures of 3 for 45.Lancashire negotiated a tricky 15 overs in the gathering gloom with Davies the man to depart for 4 when he top edged a pull of Rampaul which was caught well running back from slip by Marsden.
