Americans Abroad: AC Milan's Christian Pulisic and PSV's Malik Tillman look to build on Champions League performances, as Haji Wright gets a new manager at Coventry

GOAL US takes a look at some of the biggest storylines among Americans Abroad, with Pulisic, Wright looking to impress

Christian Pulisic is among the best players in world soccer at the moment. This is something we already knew. The USMNT winger is doing it all for Milan, and delivering on the kind of quality that was always there. He is, in truth, must-watch every week – whether you're a U.S. loyalist or not.

But he's not the only American in Europe worth keeping an eye on over the next few days. With U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino likely set to announce his squad for the upcoming Nations League quarterfinal clash against Jamaica this weekend, there will be a number of big names looking to find their best ahead of the camp. Malik Tillman, in and out of form for PSV, will hope to tap into what he showed against Girona midweek. Haji Wright, meanwhile, faces immense scrutiny with Coventry City bringing in a new manager. And, as ever, the Weston McKennie-Tim Weah duo find themselves in an uncertain situation at Juventus.

It should make for an interesting weekend of action. With serious questions to be asked as to who Pochettino could select in his starting XI, there is room here for a late push. GOAL US breaks it all down with a look ahead at some of the biggest storylines with Americans Abroad this weekend.

Getty Images SportPulisic looks to build on Madrid masterclass

AC Milan really weren't supposed to win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League last week—no one is, for that matter. But Pulisic was instrumental in making it all happen. The American was here, there and everywhere again, popping up in all sorts of spaces, finding the cute angles, and keeping the play ticking. And then there was assist as he set up the opening goal from a corner. But it was the bits in between that truly impressed. This weekend's opposition is weaker, and he will have another chance to strut his stuff.

Milan play Cagliari away on Saturday. They certainly aren't Madrid, but will present an interesting problem for Milan manager Paulo Fonseca. The former Lille boss has rather tinkered with his side this season, and hasn't seemed to have figured out how to best configure everyone in attack. Not that all of that seems to matter to Pulisic, though, who has seven goals and four assists so far. There was scattered talk that Fonseca could be out of the door a few weeks ago. That pressure could mount again, but so far, Pulisic continues to be the guy who is stopping it from happening.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWright looks to impress a new manager

There was a mixed reaction to Coventry sacking manager Mark Robins. The head coach had been at the helm for eight years, gotten the promoted twice, and overseen a memorable FA Cup semifinal run last year. This isn't usually a guy you let go of. But results are results, and Coventry are 17th – a stark contrast from their promotion hopes that crumbled at the final hurdle last season as they finished ninth.

For USMNT forward Wright, the implications could be pretty significant. Robins gave Wright a chance at Coventry, and made him a mainstay in attack. It is his faith that catapulted Wright into the U.S. picture. Barring a hefty surprise, he will be in the USMNT setup for the Nations League quarterfinal tie against Jamaica.

He was given a chance by the old gaffer. It's now time to impress the new one, when the manager is hired, an effort that will begin with a trip to high flying Sunderland tomorrow.

AFPTillman back to his best?

Tillman was out of form for all of three weeks. There was miniature panic among USMNT circles that the former Bayern Munich man was being misused as PSV manager Peter Bosz moved him into a deeper midfield role. Suddenly, the goalscoring attacking midfielder/winger hybrid wasn't in the areas that made him so good. Panic buttons were collectively smashed.

So much for that. PSV battered struggling Girona, 4-0, in the Champions League midweek. And although Tillman nominally started the game as a No. 8, he had no trouble getting into advanced areas. He scored once, assisted twice, and created six chances – running the game in the final third. That position might just suit him, with the right approach. And it's something he will have the opportunity to show again as PSV take on NAC Breda this weekend. The mid-table side have lost two straight and would seem to be an admittedly comfortable opponent for Tillman's side. It will be interesting to see how he fares in a deeper role again. Another good performance there might give Pochettino something to think about when he pieces together his USMNT XI.

GettyJuventus looks to stop slide

Thiago Motta's first season as Juventus manager hasn't quite gone to plan. At times, Juve have looked a fine attacking force, capable of giving anyone a game. At others, they have been rather tepid. Their seven goals conceded is the best in Serie A, and they are yet to lose in the league, but their goalscoring numbers have been middling at best. Weah and McKennie really can't be blamed for that. The duo have provided some of the more expansive moments of the season for the , chipping in with goals and assists when given the chance.

But there lies the problem: the duo haven't ever really enjoyed consistent runs in the side. Both were benched in a 1-1 draw with Lille midweek, and Weah hasn't played a full 90 this campaign. The Turin derby, against Torino this weekend, will perhaps be indicative of where the duo stand. Juve will be narrow favorites, especially at home. But Motta might need his American boys to pull out a win – and move back into the top four in the Serie A table.

SPCl1 Week11 – Parlane the star for B.A.T.

BAT Sports are firmly on course to regain the ECB Southern Electric Premier League championship crown from Havant. With seven matches remaining – three of them `time’ games and four 50-over affairs – they are effectively 37 points clear at the top.The championship race swung dramatically in BAT’s favour as Havant, the defending champions, crashed to a six-wicket defeat against a Matt King inspired Bashley (Rydal).BAT thrashed struggling Portsmouth by nine wickets – their sixth win in eight Division 1 matches – with New Zealander Neal Parlane leading the way.Portsmouth, the club who predicted a championship challenge before a ball was bowled, sank from 58-1 to 74-5 against Chris Thomason (3-40) and Dan Goldstraw (3-47).Pete Hayward (30) and Paul Ancell pulled things around but a total of 123 was never likely to test BAT – and so it proved.Parlane, predictably, led from the front blasting a boundary-strewn 81 not out as BAT raced to a nine-wicket win in just 18.1 overs.Gareth Tate and Toby Radford produced sparkling performances as Andover heightened Liphook & Ripsley’s survival fears with a three-wicket victory at London Road.Tate, the South African born off-spinner, came into his own after Alistair Gray (43) and Duncan Berry (51) had eased Liphook to 106-3.Mark Miller (3-21), who has got his bowling action back together under the critical eye of coach Nigel Noyce, grabbed the first three Liphook wickets. But it was Tate who broke the partnership by having Gray caught and, after Berry had fallen to Richard Taylor, who threaded his way through a dogged lower order to finish with figures of 5-64.Andover, chasing 191, quickly slipped to 12-2 but Radford, finding reliable partners in Roger Miller (26) and Taylor (28), fought off the threat of Alan Crawford (3-42) to hit an accomplished 90 and win the game for the North Hampshire side.

Amorim appeared to be ending his tenure as Sporting manager on a negative note as his side trailed 2-0 against Braga at half-time. However, a wild last 35 minutes saw Amorim's team score four goals to give the Manchester United-bound coach the perfect send-off. The Portuguese coach paid an emotional tribute to his players after the game as he bid farewell to the side with whom he won two Primera Liga titles.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

" I would have preferred not to suffer in this game but the way it ended… it was much more than I could have expected," he told reporters. "From a week that could have been so difficult, and it was, but I'm so much more rested now, because these players. They're unbelievable. The truth is that we didn't start well in the first half, we were slow, doing what other teams do to us, which is to waste time. In two transitions, we scored two goals that we could have avoided. But the second half was unbelievable and this feeling made everything more special. Today this adventure comes to an end and I couldn't have asked for a better moment."

Amorim added: "In 90 minutes they told a story that we all lived through. Of a lot of suffering, of fighting until the end. We deserved the victory, we were the team that always wanted more. In the final 20 minutes, we noticed the greatest freshness in our team and this has to do with the fact that Braga played on Thursday and we knew how to take advantage of that."

Arun Karthik, Mohammed lead Tamil Nadu to second straight final

Tamil Nadu remain unbeaten and will take on the winner of Baroda vs Punjab in the final

Varun Shetty29-Jan-2021Tamil Nadu beat Rajasthan in the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the second season in a row and continued to remain unbeaten this year. In a game of six dropped catches, the runners-up of last year’s edition differentiated themselves with their assured and clinical batting as their experience shone through in a chase of 155. Arun Karthik led the way with an expertly-crafted and unbeaten 89, and sealed the seven-wicket win in the company of captain Dinesh Karthik.Rajasthan start off strong
Rajasthan’s decision to bat against a TN side that has won each of their last six games chasing seemed like a decent one when the game began. Despite losing a wicket in the first over to R Sai Kishore’s left-arm spin, Rajasthan kept the scoring rate high in the powerplay as captain Ashok Menaria and opener Aditya Garhwal picked the right bowlers to target. Those happened to be seamer Aswin Crist, who replaced Sandeep Warrier after the fast bowler was called up to the national team’s nets, and offspinner B Aparajith who came on during the powerplay. But on a slow-ish pitch, Aparajith had the last laugh against Garhwal, who couldn’t get enough power on a slog sweep and holed out to long-on. At the other end, however, Menaria kept the attack going against Crist, whose jitteriness would translate to three fours and a six in four consecutive balls at the hands of Menaria to end the powerplay.No. 4 Arjit Gupta also kept the pressure on Aparajith as TN began to wither under pressure. Shahrukh Khan had dropped a catch in the second over, and there would be two more dropped at long-on by Crist. Rajasthan were 120 for 2 at the end of the 13th over, with Menaria past 50.The comeback
Sai Kishore didn’t come back on till the 12th over, having bowled the first one, and his return was the catalyst for a big comeback in the second half for TN. Having first dried up the boundary options from his end, Sai Kishore managed to get one to rise on Menaria’s pull. Arun Karthik ended a streak of dropped catches by plucking one low after running in from deep midwicket, and it was the signal for a squeeze.Medium-pacer M Mohammed had Mahipal Lomror pick out long-off in the next over, and the scoring rate collapsed from there as Sai Kishore got through his spell. Gupta had held one end up for his 45, but when he fell to M Ashwin in the 18th over, Rajasthan’s innings was already on a rapid decline. No one after No. 4 managed to score at more than run a ball and the innings sputtered and stopped at 154 for 9: a collapse of 7 for 34 in the last seven overs. Mohammed dug into the lower order and finished with 4 for 24.Tamil Nadu’s experts combine
Starting off wasn’t easy for TN as Rajasthan’s trio of left-arm seamers kept it tight. Tanveer Ul-Haq made the first breakthrough, getting C Hari Nishanth lbw with one slanted into him in the third over. Next over, Aniket Choudhary pushed one across after swinging a few in, and Aparajith was taken sharply at first slip by Rajesh Bishnoi with a lunge to his left. At the end of the powerplay, even the then chart-topping batsman N Jagadeesan seemed to be stuck, with the score 35 for 2.But Arun looked in control at the other end, as he looked to deflect and nudge on a sluggish and gripping track with the odd chip, and one stylish pull for six. That kept the score going until Jagadeesan swept Ravi Bishnoi to deep midwicket. At 70 for 3 at the halfway stage, TN still seemed in control with their two most experienced batsmen in the middle. Dinesh was his industrious self and the two started to chip away at the required run rate with expert manoeuvring and calculated boundaries.Arun banked on going inside-out, showed an ability to play the field with reverse-ramps and lap-sweeps, and added another sumptuous front-foot pull for six to his score. As their equation eased, so did Rajasthan’s concentration. By the time the target was breached, they would drop three catches – all off Khaleel Ahmed’s bowling – and miss a run-out chance as well as the two Karthiks saw TN home with an unbroken 89-run stand.

Report: Everton could complete £20m signing of "special" player this week

Everton could reportedly complete the signing of a "special" £20m player as soon as this week, although his current club are still holding firm.

Everton transfer news

Kalvin Phillips has emerged as a possible addition at Goodison Park this summer, with a replacement for Amadou Onana likely to be found as the Belgian closes in on a move to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.

In fact, Phillips has even been endorsed by teammate and former Blues hero John Stones, who has waxed lyrical over the Englishman's ability on the ball being an underrated asset, saying: "Easily his range of passing and how he’s always in the right place on the pitch, his positioning and some of the passes he plays [are] outrageous."

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Meanwhile, Colombia midfielder Richard Rios has also been linked with a move to Everton in the current transfer window, although Leicester City are reportedly ahead of them in the race, acting as a nuisance to Sean Dyche. He could join Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom as another addition, in what could be turning into a positive summer.

In fact, the latter has emerged as someone to come in alongside Leeds United youngster Wilfried Gnonto, who the Blues have seemingly shown interest in all summer long.

Everton could sign "special" player this week

According to a fresh update from TEAMtalk, Everton could now complete the signing of Gnonto from Leeds as early as this week, with three new additions potentially even on the cards.

The Italian remains keen on joining the Blues having failed to earn promotion from the Championship last season, and they are willing to pay £20m for his services. That being said, Leeds are holding out for £25m, so it may not be easy to get a deal over the line.

However, it is thought that talks are progressing well, while it has been stated that a deal where an extra £5m is payable through add-ons could be what Leeds require to shake hands with Everton.

Gnonto may have been outshone in many ways by Crysencio Summerville last season, with the Dutchman being named the Championship's best player, but the former is an excellent young talent in his own right – one who already has 13 caps to his name for Italy, which is no mean feat at the age of 20.

Meanwhile, former Leeds coach Michael Skubala made it clear what he thinks of the young winger in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

Should the Whites hold out for £25m, Everton could still get a good deal given Gnonto's age and the fact that he could be worth far more than that over time, giving Dyche a hugely exciting young player in his ranks in the process.

Ex-Everton CEO says Dyche could now sign £150k-p/w player to replace Onana

He could be a shrewd successor to the Belgian.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 22, 2024

He is still a raw footballer, so Blues supporters would have to accept that his end product could remain erratic to begin with, but he has already shown that he can handle the Premier League, registering six goal contributions in 24 appearances.

Mumbai coach Amit Pagnis tenders resignation after team crashes out of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Was appointed to the role in December; remains to be seen if MCA will accept his resignation

Vishal Dikshit21-Jan-2021

On paper Mumbai had a strong squad led by Suryakumar Yadav•PTI

Mumbai coach Amit Pagnis, who had been appointed in the role just over a month ago for the 2020-21 season, has sent in his resignation after the side’s dismal performance in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.Mumbai were in Group E along with Haryana, Delhi, Kerala, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, and finished at the bottom of the group table with only one win from five games. They crashed out of the knockouts race after losing their first four games in a row.ESPNcricinfo understands Pagnis sent his resignation to the MCA on Wednesday, a day after their last league game, and wrote that his decision to step down was due to the team’s poor performance. He also highlighted in the email that “lack of preparation amidst the pandemic has been a major setback. The team barely got any time to prepare and practise together as a team.”Pagnis’ contract is until March 31, 2021, and it remains to be seen if his resignation will be accepted by the MCA or if he will be asked to remain coach as the BCCI tries to organise at least one more domestic tournament – the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy or a curtailed Ranji Trophy – before the domestic season comes to an end.Mumbai had a number of collapses in their T20 campaign, stuttering to 52 for 5 in their 76-run loss to Delhi, 56 for 6 in the eight-wicket thrashing by Haryana, and 42 for 6 before being bowled out for 94 against Puducherry. Against Kerala they racked up 196 for 7 but they were unable to defend the total as Kerala opener Mohammed Azharuddeen smashed an unbeaten 137 off 54 balls to help chase down the total in the 16th over.On paper Mumbai had a strong squad led by Suryakumar Yadav and Aditya Tare the vice-captain, while the bowling attack was spearheaded by Dhawal Kulkarni. Yadav managed only 75 runs from five innings, and the experienced duo of Tare and Siddhesh Lad scored only 56 and 27 runs respectively from four innings each. The younger lot – Shivam Dube (161), Sarfaraz Khan (115) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (103) – were the main run-getters, helping Mumbai to a strong total against Kerala and the five-wicket win in the last league game, chasing down 155 with more than an over to spare against Andhra Pradesh. In the bowling department, Kulkarni went wicketless in his four games, Tushar Deshpande conceded 13.57 runs per over in two games and left-arm spinner Shams Mulani took four wickets but leaked 11.27 runs per over in the three matches he played. The most impressive performances in the bowling attack too were from youngsters Dube (three wickets with 7.50 economy rate) and left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar (three wickets with an economy rate of 5) who made his Mumbai debut this season.Pagnis was appointed mid-December and the squad was asked to assemble on December 29 at the Wankhede Stadium, which gave them 13 days before their first game on January 11 against Delhi. The other teams in the group arrived in Mumbai later and were allowed to train only after three rounds of Covid-19 tests on January 2, 4 and 6. Mumbai were the only team in the group to play all their matches on home grounds – the Wankhede Stadium and Bandra Kurla Complex.

Celtic could land dream signing for McGregor in swoop for £6m star

The summer transfer window still has over a month left to run and this means that Celtic have plenty of time left to get their incoming business done.

Brendan Rodgers has already brought in two goalkeepers to bolster his squad following the departure of Joe Hart, with Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo signing on permanent deals.

The Hoops have also reportedly agreed a £3.4m deal with Benfica to sign midfielder Paulo Bernardo, who spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Parkhead.

Rodgers and Celtic could now land a dream signing for Callum McGregor in Glasgow by swooping to sign another one of the club's reported transfer targets.

Celtic's interest in American dynamo

It was recently reported by the Daily Record that the Hoops are interested in a deal to sign central midfielder Tanner Tessmann from Venezia.

The outlet claimed that the USA international has emerged as a target for the Scottish giants, who have been alerted to the chance of bringing him after his move to Italian giants Inter fell through.

It added that the midfield dynamo, who is valued at £6m, is also wanted by Premier League side Brentford and a number of other teams, which means that Celtic could need to move quickly if they want to get a deal over the line.

Tanner Tessmann for Venezia.

The Scottish Premiership champions must now attempt to snap the Serie B starlet up before the end of the transfer window as he could be their dream partner for McGregor in the middle of the park.

Why Tessmann could be perfect for McGregor

Tessmann and the Scotland international could be a terrific pairing at the base of Rodgers' midfield to control the tempo of games and restrict what the opposition can do on the ball.

Both players are athletic midfielders who can get across the pitch to win possession back whilst also being creative players who like to make things happen at the top end of the pitch.

Tessmann averaged 6.7 ball recoveries per game across 37 appearances in the Serie B last term, whilst McGregor managed 6.6 per match in the Premiership, which suggests that both players can consistently recover the ball back for their side.

As you can see in the table above, they both offer similar qualities in the middle of the park for their respective sides in and out of possession.

Tessmann appears to be the greater threat in front of goal but there is not much between them when it comes to creating chances, making tackles and interceptions, and winning their duels on the deck and in the air.

Described as an "immense conductor" of play by Youth Scouting creator Max on X, the Venezia star could be a dream alongside McGregor as their respective qualities in and out of possession could allow them to dominate opposition teams.

Celtic could forget about Balikwisha with "magic" pre-season star

The Hoops could hand a larger role to the impressive winger next season instead of dipping into the market.

They can suffocate sides with their constant desire to win the ball back and then pile the pressure on defences with his creativity and quality in possession, which is why Rodgers must now swoop to sign Tessmann to partner McGregor.

Agreement reached: 20 y/o now set to leave Leeds alongside Cresswell

With Charlie Cresswell already seemingly set to swap Elland Road for Toulouse, Leeds United are now reportedly set to lose another young player in this summer’s transfer window.

Leeds transfer news

Of course, it looked like Leeds were about to bid farewell to Archie Gray in their biggest blow yet this summer before they reportedly rejected Brentford’s proposal. The young star even had a medical lined up at Brentford but could now join Tottenham.

The same can’t be said for Cresswell, however, who is reportedly set to undergo a medical at Toulouse next week ahead of completing a £3.8m move this summer. The central defender struggled for minutes last season and is heading for the exit door potentially alongside another young gem.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Plymouth Argyle have reached an agreement to sign Darko Gyabi on loan from Leeds next season. The young central midfielder spent part of last season on loan at the Pilgrims and is now set to make his return to the Championship club, where he will work under new manager Wayne Rooney.

Leeds could lose "superb" star for cut price as European club open talks

This would be a frustrating blow for the Whites.

2 ByTom Cunningham Jun 28, 2024

Daniel Farke may hope to welcome back a player ready to step into his first team, as Gyabi gains crucial minutes in the Championship next season. With his contract set to expire in 2026 too, it’s set to be an important year for the 20-year-old in what could end in a career crossroad.

"Excellent" Gyabi needs Plymouth return

With minutes far from guaranteed at Elland Road, a return to Plymouth on loan makes perfect sense for Gyabi. The young midfielder will get the opportunity to play week in, week out whilst learning from one of England’s greatest-ever players in the form of Rooney. If his destiny is to eventually leave Leeds on a permanent basis in 2026 too, then impressing other Championship clubs will certainly do the 20-year-old no harm.

Leeds' Darko Gyabi

Gyabi earned plenty of praise during last season’s loan spell, with former Plymouth manager Ian Foster saying via The Yorkshire Evening Post whilst also praising Ashley Phillips: “They were excellent, both of them. They fit in the group incredibly well and that’s credit to the other boys.

“We’ve welcomed them. I don’t look at birth certificates when I pick teams. They’re both teenagers coming into what is a very, very difficult game and I thought they both handled it really, really well. Ashley was solid throughout the game. I thought his in-possession game was good, and we’ve seen with Darko what he’s capable of. He’s full of energy. He wants to get on the ball, play forward and break lines.”

Now seemingly set to become the next player to leave Elland Road this summer, Gyabi may hope to instantly find the form he first showed at Plymouth last season.
