WHAT HAPPENED?
December 18, 2022, marks the day Messi got his hands on the World Cup for the first time in his career, so it's a date he'll never forget. To celebrate the second anniversary of Argentina's success in Qatar, the 37-year-old posed with the trophy as he enjoyed a pot of mate tea.

WHAT MESSI SAID
"Love December and Christmas dates," Messi wrote on Instagram. "Two years ago could have been a bitter last month of the year, but it ended up being the sweetest of my sporting career. And now, every December I get this memory… Happy 2nd Anniversary to everyone!
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Messi was awarded the Golden Ball after inspiring the Albiceleste to their third World Cup win, and first since 1986. He scored seven goals in the tournament, including two in the final, before scoring his penalty in the shootout over France. The World Cup was the only trophy missing from Messi's stunning collection, and it's now safe to say that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has completed football.

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?
There is some optimism that Messi will try to help Argentina defend their trophy at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Lionel Scaloni's side have breezed through their qualification campaign and can secure a spot in the tournament in March.
Marsh’s all-round brilliance, Hazlewood’s thrifty spell in vain for visitors in St Lucia
Andrew McGlashan09-Jul-2021West Indies fought back to secure an extraordinary victory in the opening match against Australia having been behind the game for large periods. The visitors contrived to lose their last six wickets for 19 runs against Obed McCoy and Hayden Walsh Jr having needed less than five over in the second half of the chase.McCoy, who was impressive in the recent series against South Africa, confounded Australia’s lower order with his slower-ball variations while Walsh Jr marked his recalled with the key wicket of top-scorer Mitchell Marsh who looked to have put Australia on track with a maiden T20I fifty. In the end it was another maiden T20I half-century, from Andre Russell, which finished on the winning side as his 51 off 28 balls transformed the West Indies innings after they had laboured against an inspired opening burst from Josh Hazlewood who conceded just three runs in his first three overs.Australia surged out of the blocks in the chase with 70 on the board at the end of the powerplay and the loss of three wickets in the same period seemed a reasonable price to pay to be so far ahead of the required run rate. The decisive collapse began when Ben McDermott missed a booming drive against Walsh Jr’s googly and the rest of Australia’s innings did not make much sense. A small crowd of fully vaccinated supporters were left jumping for joy.Hazlewood’s powerplay perfection There was one spot up for grabs among Australia’s four specialist bowlers and it went to Hazlewood for just the 10th T20I in a career that started in 2013. He could not have put in a better display to advance his claims for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad. With his second ball he had Evin Lewis taken at mid-on and then he tied down Chris Gayle with a maiden in his second over. That pressure told when Gayle got a top edge to point in Hazlewood’s third over, by the end of which he had the astonishing figures of 3-1-3-2 – including 17 dot balls – as West Indies limped along in the fielding restrictions with Lendl Simmons 19 off 23 balls in the first six overs. Hazlewood would return for the final over of the innings where he adjusted his length to end the thunderous display of Russell and, if it hadn’t been for Dwayne Bravo sending the last ball for six, he could have finished with Australia’s most economical four-over display.
Australia had a win probability over 90% until the 13th over! Here's how they went downhill in the chase as per @ESPNcricinfo's Forecaster. #WIvAUS pic.twitter.com/mebOdQScxD
— ESPNcricinfo stats (@ESPNcric_stats) July 10, 2021
Take a wicket, lose a review After Simmons’s difficult stay was ended by an outside edge in Marsh’s first over, West Indies’ problems were compounded by the run out of stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran – leading for the first time with Kieron Pollard injured – although there was a curious element about the dismissal. Mitchell Starc appeal for lbw against Shimron Hetmyer, which was turned down, but Pooran couldn’t get back into his crease at the non-striker’s end as Josh Philippe proved very alert to the chance. However, before the run out had been completed Aaron Finch had called for a review for the initial lbw shout so, after Pooran had been shown to be clearly out, they had to check for the lbw which was missing leg stump so Australia lost their review.A Russell special West Indies needed something to turn their innings around and provide a target to bowl at. Russell was given a life on 5, dropped at midwicket by Moises Henriques, and delivered with his maiden T20I half-century, a display of awesome power off 26 balls, which included five sixes over various massiveness around the ground. Having reached 6 off 9 deliveries, he started to unleash with consecutive sixes off Ashton Agar, the first requiring a replacement ball as it exited the ground, then he added back-to-back sixes against Starc in the 17th over as the left-armer missed his mark attempting for wide yorkers. Another mighty blow in the penultimate over, again off the expensive Starc, brought up the fifty.Hectic powerplay Fabian Allen and McCoy both struck with their first deliveries in Australia’s chase – Finch driving Allen to cover and Philippe clubbing McCoy to mid-on – but boundaries flowed at the same time. Matthew Wade raced to 33 off 14 balls which included putting Fidel Edwards out of the ground and sending Russell for consecutive sixes but fell at the end of the over when he carelessly found deep point. Henriques began his innings by pulling his first two deliveries from McCoy and the job was half done for Australia by the end of the fielding restrictions. Then the wheels came off.How did that happen? Henriques continued the tone of Australia hitting the ball in the air to fielders when he drove to point, but Marsh worked his way to a composed half-century and with batting still to come, it should have been well in hand. Walsh Jr’s first over back in the side had cost ten but he returned in the 11th to remove McDermott which exposed the lower order. He then firmly opened the door for West Indies when Marsh drove a return catch and it left Australia needing Dan Christian to guide a chase home on his recall after a four-year gap. Agar did not stay for long, McCoy grabbing a brilliant low caught and bowled, then Christian lofted Walsh Jr to long-on which meant it was over to the bowlers to try and stop the panic. They couldn’t do it with McCoy claiming the last two wickets in the space of three deliveries which gives him 13 scalps in his last five matches.
Let's begin by admitting something: there was an element of anxiety around Arne Slot's introduction to life as Liverpool boss. Stepping into Jurgen Klopp's shoes was always going to be a daunting task and history suggests that some would struggle to build upon the strong foundations.
But Slot isn't any head coach and was picked by FSG's Michael Edwards to succeed the legendary German given the ticked boxes around his tactical nous and interpersonal skills, two facets that have been salient across the opening three months of his Liverpool reign.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Liverpool are discernibly more composed on the ball, more eager to retain possession, sapping opponents' energy and confidence through purposeful passing play and suffocating transitions.
The September international break trundles on but Reds supporters will be itching to see their high-flying team back in action, having won all three of their opening Premier League matches, yet to concede a goal and most recently putting Manchester United to the sword at Old Trafford.
Luis Diaz celebrates for Liverpool against Manchester United.
All this without really making any significant moves in the transfer market. Slot's first-team squad is brimming with talent, and the primary objective is to tie three key figures down to new deals.
Why Liverpool need to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk
As you've probably heard, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah are all out of contract at the end of the season, with their unresolved contractual situations striking more than a measure of trepidation into the hearts of supporters.
Liverpool might not have welcomed hordes of world-renowned superstars to the squad but plenty has gone on at Anfield. A host of squad players have been sold or loaned out to unclutter and streamline a talented team eyeing silverware, and now Edwards and Richard Hughes are going to work on the aforementioned issues.
Salah looks the most likely to pen new terms at this stage, with negotiations forthcoming and the Reds reportedly doing everything within their power to extend the Egyptian's £350k-per-week contract.
All is quiet on the Van Dijk front. The Netherlands and Liverpool captain has been one of the most influential players in Europe since signing for Liverpool from Southampton in a £75m move in January 2018, and though he's now 33, is still performing at an obscene level.
His aerial dominance, ball-playing skills and leadership quality are elements known by all, but the fact that the Dutchman still ranks among the top 7% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for carries (57.79) per 90, as per FBref, suggests that his athleticism and robustness remain at an impressive standard.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
Van Dijk has conquered all of Europe in Liverpool red, but is he going to stop? It's an anxious wait but the hope is that he extends and continues to add security and authority from the back, stretching his influence across every area of the park.
Tying him down to a contract extension, alongside Alexander-Arnold and Salah, is imperative, and fans will hope to see some positivity on that front after a low-key summer.
That said, Liverpool did sign Federico Chiesa, and that might turn out to be a masterful addition.
Why Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa
Before the summer market opened for business, most of a Liverpool persuasion would have expected to see the backline strengthened with a new centre-back and, perhaps, FSG enforce the signing of an upgrade on Wataru Endo, who was signed as a stopgap from Stuttgart last summer for £16m.
Landing Chiesa, an out-of-favour and injury-prone winger from Juventus, was probably not envisaged, but let's steer away from surface-level stuff and look at why the Reds opted to make this move.
Chiesa, injuries aside, is one of Europe's most talented wide forwards, with technical sharpness, multi-angled creativity and positional flexibility that led journalist Zach Lowy to hail him as "absolutely world-class" after his performances at Euro 2020 with Italy, crucial in his nation's golden triumph.
But he's suffered ACL blows that have knocked his growth since. Despite this, the 26-year-old enjoyed something of a resurgence with Juventus last season, starting 26 Serie A matches and scoring nine goals.
Moreover, he ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref, underscoring the kind of shuttling playmaker Liverpool have got their mitts on.
Federico Chiesa for Juventus
Did we mention the transfer fee? My, my, if Chiesa can keep the chatter around his name fixed to on-pitch stuff, there's no question that Edwards has done it again and that Liverpool might just have hit the jackpot.
Liverpool have already hit the jackpot on Federico Chiesa
On August 29, 2024, Liverpool announced the signing of Chiesa from Italian giants Juventus. The figure was reported to stand at just £10m, stretching to £12.5m upon the meeting of feasible clauses.
Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.
This is quite a shrewd sum, even if the Italy international had stepped into the final year of his contract in Turin. Earning £150k per week, he's among the higher-paid earners at the Merseyside outfit, but this is warranted, for he could prove to be an invaluable presence in Slot's squad if he (you guessed it) keeps the lengthy layoffs away.
And anyway, as per Transfermarkt, Chiesa is already considered to be worth £30m, over half of what Liverpool paid. Moreover, the site records that he was worth £59m in December 2021, before a ruinous period on the sidelines – perhaps he could resurrect something along those lines at Liverpool.
Market Movers
Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?
£30m, for example, means that he is already worth more than Van Dijk (recorded to have a market value of £26m), who might be approaching the end of his deal at Liverpool but is still one of the best players in the world – should a new deal fail to materialise, there will be no shortage of high-profile suitors in line.
Fans have little more time to wait until Chiesa gracing the Anfield pitch, in line to make his debut in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest this coming weekend, and if he hits the ground running and sustains an impressive purple patch, he might just restore his erstwhile position among Europe's most valuable forwards.
Liverpool dud who left in 2016 would now cost more than Nunez in 2024 money
This expensive dud really struggled when he was on the books at Liverpool.
Sri Lanka’s top order have lacked runs, while Bangladesh’s bowlers have hunted in a pack

Sri Lanka have gone down in both ODIs quite easily•AFP/Getty Images
Big Picture Although they are 2-0 up and have sealed the series, Bangladesh will not allow themselves to relax in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Dhaka. The home team has just got out of a ten-match winless streak and there remain many areas to still get right, with bigger challenges coming up later in the year. The same, if not more, applies for Sri Lanka. It has so far been a tough few days for the visitors who, after enduring a Covid-19 scare, went down in both ODIs quite easily.Sri Lanka’s biggest headache on this tour has been the lack of runs from their recognised batters. Wanindu Hasaranga is their highest run-getter with 80 runs, including a half-century in the first game. But those runs were made from No. 8, with Sri Lanka’s top seven yet to register a half-century across both matches. But as much as there has been criticism of their selection policy to drop some of their experienced players from the squad, the likes of Kusal Perera, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva have been around for long enough to carry a batting line-up. Pathum Nissanka, Ashen Bandara and Dasun Shanaka are relatively new, but they all possess the ability to play spin. What should have heartened the team must be their bowling and fielding in these two matches. Dushmantha Chameera and Lakshan Sandakan have been among the wickets, while Hasaranga has bowled some accurate legspin too. Sri Lanka have had Bangladesh on the ropes a few times, but the home side has fought back from situations like 99 for 4 in the first ODI, and 15 for 2, 74 for 4, and 184 for 7 in the second to eventually post match-winning totals. This is where the experienced Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah have made the difference between the two teams. Whenever they have faced trouble, one of the three has stood up with the bat. While Rahim has made 209 runs in the two matches, equally important have been his partnerships of 109 and 87 with Mahmudullah from difficult positions. The lack of runs from the likes of Liton Das and Afif Hossain could be a worry though. Mohammad Mithun and Mosaddek Hossain have got a match each, but on the whole, there has been an over-reliance on the senior batters, who may not always manage to score at a higher rate in every phase of the innings.Bangladesh’s bowling, though, has really come forth in difficult times. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman have been great support acts to Shakib Al Hasan, while youngster Shoriful Islam didn’t look out of place either on his ODI debut in the last game.Form guide Bangladesh WWLLL Sri Lanka LLLLLMehidy Hasan Miraz has picked up seven wickets in the two matches so far•AFP/Getty Images
In the spotlight Mehidy Hasan Miraz is now the second-best bowler in the ICC ODI bowlers’ rankings, having picked up seven wickets in the two matches. He has taken control of Sri Lanka’s middle overs while using a fine mix of flight, spin and accurate length.Dushmantha Chameera bowled a superb first over in the second ODI, removing both Tamim and Shakib in the space of four balls. And though Sri Lanka couldn’t take advantage of it, Chameera has come off as one of the highlights for the visitors on this tour.Team news Mohammad Naim’s inclusion in the squad suggests that the team management must be seriously considering Das’ spot. Soumya Sarkar and Mahedi Hasan are the others who remain unused in the squad so far. A decision on the availability of Mohammad Saifuddin will be taken on match day. The allrounder had suffered a blow to his head during the second ODI, but was cleared of anything serious.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Liton Das/Mohammad Naim, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mosaddek Hossain, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Mustafizur RahmanNiroshan Dickwella could replace Ashen Bandara to beef up Sri Lanka’s middle order. Although allrounder Ramesh Mendis and Akila Dananjaya are also in the squad as spin-bowling options, it is the team’s batting that needs more attention.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Kusal Perera (capt), 3 Pathum Nissanka, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 7 Dasun Shanaka, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Lakshan Sandakan, 11 Dushmantha ChameeraPitch and conditions Bangladesh chose to bat first in both matches as the pitches appeared two-paced, thus hardly encouraging big-hitting. The pitches also seemed to get slower as the game progressed, and it is unlikely to be too different in the third ODI. The weather forecast is mostly for clear conditions in Dhaka.Stats and trivia Shakib needs one wicket to become the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in ODIs. But he needs two more to overtake Mashrafe Mortaza as the one with the most wickets from his country in the format, as Mortaza took 269 for Bangladesh and one for Asia XI against Africa XI in 2007. When he reached 113 in the second ODI, Rahim became the fourth cricketer to cross 6000 ODI runs as a wicketkeeper. Kumar Sangakkara, MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist are those above him.Quotes “When I see the guys playing in the net they look really good. They’re playing with freedom. But when I see the guys out in the middle, it’s different – there’s pressure. A lot of the guys are freezing.”
A high-earning member of the Aston Villa squad has publicly teased a potential move to one named club, with the player holding a sit-down interview whilst away on international duty for his country.
Villa prepare for Everton after solid start to Premier League season
It's been a solid start to the season for Unai Emery and Villa, who are also looking forward to their first participation in the European Cup/Champions League since 1983.

Villa beat West Ham 2-1 on the opening Premier League weekend, courtesy of goals from summer signing Amadou Onana and a late winner from striker Jhon Duran, with Emery's side also defeating newly-promoted Leicester City 2-1 at the King Power.
Their only loss of the season so far was against title hopefuls Arsenal at Villa Park, and even that was a smash and grab, with Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey bagging late strikes past the hour mark to nick a late victory.

Emery and co are now preparing to host Everton right after the international break finishes, and three days later, they'll kick off their opening Champions League game of the season against Young Boys in Switzerland.
“I’m very happy," said Emery after Villa's 2-1 win away to Leicester.
"We were speaking before the match in the dressing room about how we are always feeling our supporters helping when we are playing away. We are feeling their support and it’s very important for us. We are playing thinking of them and trying to feel comfortable. Playing away, their supporters are pushing a lot, but we can feel our supporters here with us.
“It’s important for us to play with confidence and the commitment we have to make everybody happy.”
Villa are also fresh off the back of what was a very eventful transfer window for them. While Emery lost key players from last season, like Douglas Luiz, Villa quickly moved to seal a statement £50 million deal for Onana, and they also managed to keep hold of Belgium international Youri Tielemans.
Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans teases move to Anderlecht
The 27-year-old was linked with an exit from the Midlands this summer, with some reports even claiming Tielemans was keen to leave Villa during the window, but he instead opted to remain under Emery.
An update on the midfielder's future has now emerged right from the horse's mouth, as Tielemans publicly teases a potential return to Anderlecht in a sit-down interview, even if there are other priorities first.
Youri Tielemans in Astom Villa training
“Leander [Dendoncker] made that decision, he wants to play," said Tielemans to HLN. "He knows the structure at Anderlecht and has many playing opportunities, that is ideal. And he has stability for his family. For me, the door to Anderlecht is always open, but I also have to look at my career. First, other things.”
The £150,000-per-week ace has started all three of Villa's league games so far, bagging an assist and playing 270 minutes in total.
Arsenal’s academy has impressed in recent years, producing talents who are edging ever closer to breaking into the club’s first team under Mikel Arteta.
Ethan Nwaneri is arguably the most promising, making his debut for the club in September 2022 as a 15-year-old against Brentford at the GTEC Community Stadium – making him the youngest-ever appearance maker in the club’s history.
The now 17-year-old has only made one more competitive first-team appearance for the Gunners since, but he has started in the Premier League 2 for the U21 side, registering 13 goal contributions in his 13 appearances last season.
Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri
Midfielder Nwaneri has been a consistent goalscoring option for various youth sides in recent years, scoring a combined 26 goals from midfield for the U18 and U21 sides since his breakthrough a couple of years ago.

However, despite his consistent figures for the Hale End Academy, he’s yet to break into the starting team, with another European talent of a similar age already taking the world by storm at his club.
Lamine Yamal’s time at Barcelona
Like Nwaneri, Lamine Yamal is a player in the very early stages of his career, but the 17-year-old Spaniard has already announced himself as a key player for Barcelona after his breakthrough last season.
The forward made 50 appearances in all competitions for the LaLiga side, registering a total of 16 goal contributions – a stupendous figure for a player at such a tender age.
However, that would be just the tip of the iceberg for Yamal, with the youngster playing a huge part in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph this summer – featuring in every game, scoring a screamer against France whilst laying on four assists for his international teammates.
He subsequently was handed the Young Player of the Tournament award, a signal of his impact, with the talent continuing his impressive form into the new campaign.
Yamal already has five goal contributions in the opening four matches of the Hansi Flick era – aiming to claim another league title for Barça in the 2024/25 campaign.

However, the Gunners could unearth their own version of the superstar, with one academy gem catching the eye in recent months.
The star who could be Arsenal’s own Yamal
Max Dowman may be a name unknown to many Arsenal supporters, but the young talent is making waves in the academy and progressing at a rapid rate.
The 14-year-old, who features internationally for England’s U17 side, is a regular performer in the club’s U18 squad – making his first appearance at that level at just 13. It’s a ridiculous fact.
Dowman, who’s been dubbed as “remarkable” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, operates in an attacking midfield role – achieving a total of two goals and five assists – demonstrating his ability to create opportunities in the final third.
The youngster has already caught the eye of former player and current U18’s head coach Jack Wilshere, with the former Arsenal talent saying:
It’s unfair to load expectations on such a young talent to impress, but given his rapid development and the qualities displayed, Dowman has all the tools to be the next player of a long list to break into the club’s first-team after spending numerous years in the academy setup.
Barça forward Yamal is just one example of a player who can thrive against Europe’s elite, with Dowman needing to remain focused and determined to continue on his upward trajectory before replicating the impact of the Spaniard at the Emirates.
Sold for £35m: Arsenal's record sale is now worth just £14m
The talented star hasn’t kicked on as people thought he might.

A half-century from Samit Patel saw North Group leaders Nottinghamshire Outlaws home by six wickets with 13 balls to spare as the Foxes slumped to an eighth defeat of the Vitality Blast season.Patel hit six fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 63 and shared a 99-run fourth-wicket stand with Ben Slater, who made 48 from 31 balls in his first Twenty20 match for three years, as the Outlaws chased down a target of 155, the Foxes dropping three catches on a poor night in the field.Legspinner Calvin Harrison took 3 for 20 and Luke Fletcher 3 for 31 as Leicestershire were bowled out for 154 in precisely 20 overs, Harry Swindells top-scoring with 36, Arron Lilley and Ben Mike each hitting 27.The Outlaws were forced to make three changes with Tom Moores unwell and both Joe Clarke and Sol Budinger obliged to wait for Covid tests after being alerted by the NHS app.An eventful Powerplay saw the Foxes post 47 for 2. They lost Scott Steel for a duck in the first over as Ben Duckett – keeping wicket for the absent Moores – showed neat glovework. Lilley survived on one as Fletcher and Lyndon James collided under a top-edged reverse-sweep and made them pay with 27 off 20 balls before he was yorked. They lost momentum after wickets fell in consecutive balls to Harrison, Josh Inglis finding long-off before Colin Ackermann chipped back to the bowler.Calvin Harrison was in the wickets•PA Images/Getty
Lewis Hill lofted sixes off Steven Mullaney and offspinner Matt Carter but was caught at midwicket off Fletcher, Rishi Patel was lbw sweeping as Harrison picked up his third wicket and Swindells misjudged a slower ball to be caught at mid-off. Naveen was run out and Fletcher was rewarded with wickets in his last two overs and though Mike clubbed two sixes off Ball, the Foxes’ total looked below par.Duckett, who hit Callum Parkinson to deep backward square, and Alex Hales, caught at point off Naveen-ul-Haq’s first ball, having just survived a run-out chance that saw Lilley ticked off for dissent. Peter Trego perished to a beauty from Naveen but 58 for 3 saw them ahead in the Powerplay.Patel was dropped at backward point on 10 off Naveen and at short midwicket on 26 off Steel, albeit both difficult chances, but he and Slater brought the target down to 71 at halfway. Slater had an escape when he was spilled at extra cover off Mike on 37.Slater missed out on a half-century, trapped in front by Parkinson, before Patel drove Naveen through the covers to finish the job.

WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID
Ancelotti also gave his squad a big speech, following up Vinicius's kind words to the Real Madrid players.
Ancelotti said: "I want to share it with you because when a coach receives an individual award it is obviously thanks to his players, for the success the team has had, this is quite obvious. Thank you all for your effort, for the quality you have and above all for the attitude you have and the people you are. You can have success based on a professional relationship, but after so many years what brings more success is the personal relationship. Luckily you are all intelligent and we have a very good personal relationship and this is the secret of success. Thank you very much."
