Buttler rues the one that got away as England slump to rare home-series loss

Captain insists he will grow into new responsibilities after Pant reprieve proves crucial

Andrew Miller17-Jul-2022Jos Buttler conceded that his costly missed stumping off Rishabh Pant probably made the difference between victory and defeat in the series-deciding third ODI against India at Emirates Old Trafford. However, he denied that the lapse had anything to do with the extra mental load of taking on England’s white-ball captaincy.Pant’s unbeaten 125 from 113 balls – his first ODI hundred – came after a decisive stand of 133 with Hardik Pandya, one that allowed India to recover from a dicey 72 for 4 and chase down England’s sub-par total of 259 with five wickets and 47 balls to spare. However, Pant himself should have been the fourth Indian wicket to fall, for just 18, when Moeen Ali tempted him down the pitch in the 16th over, and beat him with sharp turn past the outside edge. Buttler, however, could not cling on, and when Hardik, on 6 at the time, steered a loose pull off Brydon Carse over the head of fine leg, who had wandered in from the rope, two big opportunities to access India’s lengthy tail had been gone.In the end, Pant never gave England another sniff in a magnificently composed performance, one which he sealed in style with a flurry of six fours from his final seven deliveries, after Hardik’s own Player-of-the-Series-sealing display had ended on 71 with a fine low catch from Ben Stokes at short midwicket.”Give good players a second chance, and there’s a good chance they’ll hurt you,” Buttler admitted, after England had suffered just their third ODI series loss at home since 2015, all of which have come down to a decider at Old Trafford. “Rishabh Pant is a fearless player, someone who is great to watch in all formats. It’s his mentality that sets him apart. He looks like he gets great backing.”If we took those chances, we would probably have had a good hold in the game with a long tail for India. But with the score we put up, we were going to need to take all our chances to have a chance of winning the game.Jos Buttler brought up his fifty off 65 balls•Getty Images”We just need to be better,” Buttler added, having also overseen a 2-1 series loss in the T20Is against India. However, with a brand-new ODI series against South Africa looming in Chester-le-Street as soon as Tuesday, he also conceded: “We have to reflect quickly as there isn’t much time.”Buttler himself has endured a mixed time with the bat in this leg of the summer. He made an important 60 from 80 balls at Old Trafford, to shore up England’s innings after their own top-order wobble, but his returns have dipped since his stellar run of form at the recent IPL – not to mention his exploits in the Netherlands last month, where his unbeaten 162 from 70 balls underpinned England’s world-record total of 498 for 4.He has assumed the full-time captaincy from Eoin Morgan since that innings, and has been obliged to forge a new working relationship with the incoming head coach, Matthew Mott. But Buttler was adamant that he would get to grips with the new responsibilities as he grows into his expanded role.”At times, I’ve found absolutely fine, to be honest,” he said. “I missed a chance today, but I don’t think that’s got anything to do with captaincy, so I’m not worrying too much about that. I feel good, I’ve been in some of the best form of my life, and I still feel in great touch. Form isn’t just the score.”I’m learning lots, I found the first week busy but I feel more comfortable now,” Buttler added. “There have been lots of games in a short space of time, which has been a challenge, so it’ll be nice to have a day to reflect. I feel I’m an experienced cricketer but a young captain, with an opportunity to grow and learn about the role. It will take a bit of time, I need to walk before I can run.”More broadly, Buttler recognises that England’s batting has been off-colour this series – partly because of the sustained quality of India’s attack, but also because of a relative lack of familiarity with the 50-over format. It was England’s priority from 2015 to 2019, but with the cycle currently between back-to-back T20 World Cups, the longer white-ball format has been a scarcity of late. Indeed, the five batters in England’s ODI top six who were integral to that World Cup triumph three years ago hadn’t played together since until last week’s Oval defeat.”We haven’t played much ODI cricket recently and it’s about working out the rhythm,” he said. “We’ve played on great batting wickets [in the past] and the balls haven’t done much. Over a period of time, you need to be able to adapt. That’s our ambition.”We just haven’t got in and had long partnerships,” Buttler said. “Every time we have, we have started to score. I’m not concerned, but throughout the whole summer so far, in the T20s and the ODIs, we just haven’t batted our best and we just have to play better for longer.”Related

One undoubted positive for England was the performance of Reece Topley, who backed up an eye-catching display in the T20I series with nine wickets at 9.00 in the ODIs – all of which came in the space of 16.5 overs at Lord’s and Old Trafford. When Topley backed up his career-best 6 for 24 with three more scalps in his first 4.1 overs of the decider, it seemed England were on course for victory. And yet, he bowled just seven overs all told at Old Trafford – a decision that Buttler said was partly a tactical decision but also involved a degree of player management given Topley’s well-known injury history.”He’s been brilliant,” Buttler said. “He got his opportunity and took Man-of-the-Match at Lord’s and the T20s at Trent Bridge as well. We were trying to search for ways to create wickets and it’s been a tough schedule as well, and Reece is just creaking a bit, so we will just have to look after him a little bit, as we will all our players.”England’s intense schedule – partially caused by the need to shoehorn in the postponed fifth Test from India’s 2021 series – means there is just a 48-hour turnaround until they take on South Africa at Chester-le-Street. But with the need to look after England’s quick bowlers in particular, the chances are that Matthew Potts, one of England’s stars of the recent Test successes, may be given a chance for an ODI debut in front of his home fans.”We have to look after the players, the schedules are incredibly tough,” Buttler said. “The thought of a three-and-a-half hour bus to play on Tuesday… there’s risk with the bowlers. We’ll have to manage guys, and maybe rest a few.”Matthew Potts comes into the squad, there’s a guy who is exciting to see in ODI cricket if he gets his chance. Reece has been through a lot and has a great understanding with what he needs, and all the bowlers need. We don’t want to push guys too far.”

Celtic close to sealing agreement to sign "sensational" £110,000-p/w star

Celtic are now close to completing the signing of a “sensational” player, who is determined to seal a move to Parkhead, according to a report.

Celtic eyeing multiple new signings

Although the Hoops are some way clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with Rangers struggling of late, Brendan Rodgers remains keen on strengthening his squad in a number of key areas.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s future in Glasgow remains in doubt, amid interest from MLS side Atlanta United, and contact has now been made with the camp of Brondby’s Mathias Kvistgaarden, who has enjoyed a fantastic season in Denmark.

Kvistgaarden is being viewed as a potential replacement for Kyogo, but the Dane is not the only attacker Rodgers has in mind, as talks have now started over a deal for Sarpsborg winger Sondre Ojrasaeter.

Not only are Celtic looking to bolster their options in attacking areas, but they are also keen on bringing in a new left-back, with Kieran Tierney being identified as a key target, as Arsenal are willing to let him leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

There has now been a new update on the Hoops’ pursuit of Tierney, and it is promising news, with TEAMtalk revealing the former Celtic man is now close to signing a pre-contract agreement.

There are other offers on the table for the 27-year-old, but he has turned them all down in favour of a return to Parkhead, indicating that he is determined to reunite with Rodgers.

The Hoops are focused on getting a pre-contract agreement over the line, but there is also hope that a loan deal may be possible this month. However, the Gunners would be looking for a loan fee of £2.5m, with Mikel Arteta hesitant to let the £110k-per-week defender leave mid-season.

Great news for Celtic

The Isle of Man-born defender played a key role in helping Celtic reach nine Scottish Premiership titles on the bounce, making 170 appearances for the club, during which time he displayed his attacking talents by registering eight goals and 37 assists.

While the Scotland international has fallen out of favour in north London, he has previously been an important player for Arsenal, and a move back to Glasgow could be exactly what he needs to get his career back on track.

The left-back has been lauded as “sensational” during his time with the Gunners, but he is perhaps not quite at the level to be a regular starter for a club with aspirations of winning the Premier League and Champions League.

That said, Tierney has already proven himself in Glasgow, and the fact he is happy to turn down other offers to seal a move back to Celtic shows how highly he still thinks of his former club.

The only issue of a loan move in January could be the proposed £2.5m loan fee. Given that the Hoops are already in an extremely strong position to win the league, it may not be financially prudent to spend so much money on a player they can get for free in the summer and may focus on a pre-contract agreement instead.

Their own Vini Jr: Newcastle chasing £34m ace who’d be unplayable with Isak

Newcastle United have one foot in the Carabao Cup final and have returned to Champions League contention with their emphatic form over the winter period.

Here is a team completely comfortable in its own skin, delighting in exerting itself with robustness and physicality against opponents who, unless they meet fire with fire, are being turned over and picked apart by a ferocious mischief of Magpies.

Victory at the Emirates on Tuesday evening marked a seventh successive win in all competitions, with a winter turnaround changing the mood on Tyneside and rekindling the belief that greatness can be achieved under Eddie Howe’s wing.

Newcastle United managerEddieHowe

However, Newcastle do need to ensure that their market dealings bear riper fruits than last year, with the 2024 summer window generally viewed disapprovingly.

Bolstering the frontline is high on the list of priorities, with United in the chase for an exciting target.

Newcastle to strengthen up front

The Telegraph believe that Harvey Barnes could be in line for a shock departure from St. James’ Park this month, with the prolific wideman’s prospective sale placating PSR and allowing for investment.

Thus: as per Spanish sources, Newcastle are looking to jostle with Manchester United for the signing of Paris Saint-Germain winger Lee Kang-in, who could be available for around €40m (£34m).

Lee, aged 23, is in his second campaign with the Ligue 1 champions but is not always a starter for the Parisiens and is keen on the idea of assuming an important role at a team like Newcastle.

Typically playing on the right, he would suit Newcastle’s plans perfectly and could find that United’s renewed Champions League hopes hold sway, with Manchester United toiling in the bottom half of the table.

Why Newcastle want Lee Kang-in

Lee is an athletic and fast-paced winger with a balanced approach to his attacking game, posting 11 goals and seven assists across 60 matches for PSG. In fact, his boss, Luis Enrique, has praised him as a “complete player.”

There might be a top partnership with someone like Alexander Isak in there, with the pace and technical assuredness certain to blend nicely with the Sweden striker’s qualities.

When looking at Isak’s influence on Newcastle’s improvements since December, you can see that Lee would be joining a frontline – including Anthony Gordon too – capable of wreaking havoc on defences across the country continent.

Isak is quite simply the finest centre-forward in the business right, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher recently saying that he’s “the best striker in the Premier League.”

More than just a goalscorer, he’s been the driving force behind his outfit’s success over the past few months, also averaging 1.7 key passes and 1.4 successful dribbles per Premier League match in 2024/25, as per Sofascore, which makes a telling comment on his roundedness, pushing forward, making intelligent movements and creating for his teammates.

That final part is of particular importance as far as Lee is concerned, for the South Korean sensation could hone his own ball-striking game on English shores, benefitting from the multi-functionality of a player who, at his core, is a deadly marksman. It would create fluidity and angles, something that has worked a treat for Gordon on the left flank.

While Lee has struggled to cement a moveless starting berth in Paris, this is hardly to the detriment of his exciting skill set. After all, his numbers in the French top flight this term make for compelling reading if you are of a Newcastle persuasion.

As per Sofascore, the South Korea international has scored six goals and added two assists across just nine starting outings in Ligue 1 this term, creating nine big chances, completing 91% of his passes and averaging 2.2 key passes and 2.6 successful duels per game.

Lee Kang-in for Paris Saint-Germain

He’s also impressing in the Champions League this season, a competition that the Magpies are looking to build a nest in permanently.

Not only does this demonstrate his confidence and big-game ability, but Lee is also proving that he can play well across a variety of environments, having previously cut his teeth at Valencia in La Liga.

South Korea international Kang-in Lee.

As per FBref, Lee ranks among the top 1% of positional peers in Europe’s distinguished competition this season for pass completion (86%), shot-creating actions and progressive passes, as well as the top 10% for progressive carries and the top 4% for tackles (all metrics per 90 minutes).

His high-level technical quality has even seen him recorded against Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior – with FBref noting the pair as similar players – whose own Champions League campaign this season has seen five goals and an assist chalked from just five matches, including an emphatic hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund.

If Newcastle were to get their hands on a star of Lee’s ilk, operating in the same vein as one of the game’s biggest superstars in Vini Jr., there’s every chance that Howe’s project would enter a new level, one even more exciting than the current iteration that has brought so much joy to Tyneside.

PSG have been reported to have an interest in Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and could even look to complete a deal this month. This would only bloat their wide ranks further and, maybe, see the green light sparked for a stunning Newcastle swoop for Lee.

"Astonishing" 29 y/o West Brom ace has "little chance" of facing Preston

An “astonishing” West Brom player has “little chance” of being fit to face Preston North End on New Year’s Day, according to journalist Lewis Cox.

Latest West Brom news

The Baggies picked up their first positive result without Carlos Corberan in charge on Sunday, as they battled their way to a 1-1 draw away to rivals Sheffield United in the Championship. Having fallen behind, Karlan Grant responded just before half-time.

The search is now on to find Corberan’s successor, with West Brom desperately hoping his exit doesn’t rock their promotion charge, and a number of potential candidates have already been mentioned as possible replacements.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Liverpool first-team coach John Heitinga is seen as a front-runner to come in at the Hawthorns, despite no doubt enjoying life alongside Arne Slot this season, helping the Reds top the Premier League table. The Dutchman managed Ajax for a stint last year and may be keen to lead a team again.

Heitinga isn’t the only individual who has been linked with the vacant West Brom job, however, with Mark Robins backed to come in and lead the troops, having tasted victory against the Baggies twice in the past. He recently suffered a shock sacking at Coventry City and is likely to be keen to return to management. Away from the manager situation at the Hawthorns, the Championship club have now suffered an injury blow ahead of their return to action.

Injury blow for "astonishing" West Brom ace

According to Cox on X, West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt has “little chance” of facing Preston, having picked up an injury against Derby County on Boxing Day.

Not having Mowatt available for the home clash with Preston to start 2025 would be an undoubted blow for West Brom, even though they did well without him against the Blades. The 29-year-old is an influential performer with so much quality in the middle of the park, bagging four goals and two assists in the Championship this season and being lauded by Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse in the past.

If Mowatt does miss out on New Year’s Day, as is expected, the hope is that his absence is still only a short-term one and that he is back for the trip to Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

West Brom want 3-4-1-2 manager who's beat them twice to replace Corberan

He has won twice against the Baggies in the past.

The Englishman is too important a player for West Brom to be without for a sustained period, and it would have an adverse effect on their hopes of sealing promotion to the Premier League.

Carlo Ancelotti should answer Brazil's call: Time is right for Real Madrid boss to walk away from Los Blancos

The great Italian coach has been linked with the Selecao job again and if another offer arrives from the CBF, he should accept it

You know how it goes. Real Madrid throw their team of Galacticos onto a pitch. Los Blancos start half-asleep and the first 15 minutes make for pretty grim watching. Maybe Madrid give up a couple of chances. They might even concede first or be generally pretty wasteful with the ball. No intensity, no passion. The murmurs start in the Santiago Bernabeu. On bad nights, they become jeers and boos. And then, it happens. Carlo Ancelotti whispers a few words to his son, Davide, and points around a bit. The singular eyebrow is raised. Suddenly, Madrid are awake. A lowly La Liga side is battered 4-1. Mini-crisis over.

It has been trendy in recent years to suggest that Carlo Ancelotti doesn't really do much as a manager. His signature "eyebrow raise" has become a meme (one easily co-opted for this very piece.) His starting XI, at the beginning of the season, featured four legitimate Ballon d'Or contenders and a bunch of so-called role players that would be stars anywhere else. How hard can managing all of this be? Tricky enough, as it turns out…

But some would argue that Ancelotti's approach is ideally suited to the international arena, which isn't really a space for overly complex tactics because of the time restrictions. It's more a place for harnessing vibes and creating the right atmosphere for an elite group of players to succeed. It makes sense, then, that Brazil are reportedly interested in securing his services once again after sacking Dorival Jr.

Ancelotti rebuffed them last summer by pledging to see out his current Madrid deal and stay at the club until at least 2026. But with the vacancy having reopened, and pieces elsewhere ready to fall into place, the time could be right for the Italian to take on the next forum of management.

Getty Images SportDisastrous Dorival

It's quite easy to see what Brazil need. Their three best footballers – Neymar, Vinicius and Rodrygo – are all true mavericks of the game, unbelievably talented individuals that, when used correctly, are as good as anyone on the planet.

However, managers, especially in recent years, have struggled to figure them out and Dorival was particularly poor in that respect. He was in a constant state of uncertainty as to how to piece it all together.

The midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and – when available – Lucas Paqueta, picked itself. Vinicius was a lock on the left. Rodrygo made sense either off the right or through the middle. Raphinha, in recent months, also worked his way into the side. But there wasn't much fluidity to it all.

The team was stagnant, predictable, and slow. Vinicius was kicked every time he touched the ball – and went on a legendary goal drought. Rodrygo never snuck into the right spaces. Raphinha failed to replicate his electric club form.

It was no surprise when Dorival was sacked. He was a poor manager out of his depth, stuck in the vacuum of Brazilian football for a team that is almost entirely global. What they need, instead, is someone who understands that – and can reach such a group.

AdvertisementAFPThe Ancelotti approach

Ancelotti isn't a tactical genius in the traditional sense. He is not reinventing, repackaging or remodeling football every year. There is no signature 'Ancelotti style'.

Instead, you have a manager who can master the art of the "vibe," bring a lot of very talented individuals together and create the environment – and system – for them to become a connected bunch of virtuosos. At its best, it can be magical, and is exactly what Brazil need.

The Selecao's stars need to be given the space to be their best, and motivated in the right way. Part of it is clear in the press.

Ancelotti routinely praises his players publicly. He called Jude Bellingham "the best player in the world" in December (never mind that he gave Vinicius the same moniker nine months before). He claimed that in Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez and Federico Valverde, he had the top three right-backs in football. Sometimes, positive reinforcement is what's needed.

But Ancelotti can also be ruthless. He is not one for sentiment, and has shown, repeatedly, that he cares little for the feel-good stuff to break into his dressing room.

He warned Toni Kroos and Luka Modric that they should prepare to move on in early 2023 when both were facing expiring contracts (both stayed). He has hooked Rodrygo, been brutal with the inconsistent Aurelien Tchouameni, and handed big-money teenager Endrick only sparing minutes.

This is a meritocracy that runs both ways. And it works – very, very, very well.

Madrid may be three points behind Barcelona in La Liga – and been on the wrong end of two Clasicos already – but they are still the team to beat in both Spain and Europe. That they have overcome ACL injuries to Carvajal and Eder Militao, and still remained at the top, is a testament to Ancelotti's world-class coaching.

And with two months of the season to go, Los Blancos are well placed to make a run at every remaining trophy.

GettyThe treble target

After beating Real Sociedad in dramatic circumstances midweek, Madrid will play Barcelona for a chance to regain the Copa del Rey.

They are also sure-fire favorites to beat Arsenal in the last eight of the Champions League next week and If Barca do indeed slip up in the title race, it's looking like Madrid will pounce. The upcoming Clasico, on May 11, should be one of the highest-stakes derbies in recent years.

Of course, success will primarily depend on the players. Kylian Mbappe has to keep scoring goals. Vinicius has to keep setting them up. Bellingham has to keep doing a little bit of everything, while the supporting cast behind them hold it down.

But it's also on Ancelotti to put the pieces into place. And there is something to be said for quitting when you're ahead.

Ancelotti has now won 15 trophies across two stints at Madrid. If he wins a fourth Champions League and third league title, he will bring his Blancos tenure to 17. Surprisingly, though, he has never won a treble. Should he complete that feat, there will be nothing more to win. And that, perhaps, is the most compelling reason to walk away.

James Pattinson drives Nottinghamshire as Middlesex are made to follow on

Gritty rearguard led by Simpson, Holden but work to be done in battle for draw

Middlesex face a battle to save a draw after Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire continued to hold the upper hand in their top-of-the-table clash in the LV= Insurance County Championship.Despite an impressive fightback from 106 for five, Middlesex were forced to follow on 175 runs behind after Nottinghamshire had dismissed them for 376.Openers Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson survived 20 overs to take Middlesex to 63 without loss at the close. They could be in for a tough final day with Nottinghamshire still 112 in front, although a benign pitch may make their task easier.James Pattinson finished with four for 65 and Dane Paterson three for 97 after John Simpson (92), Max Holden (86) and Luke Hollman (52) had mounted a gritty effort to keep their side in the game in response to Nottinghamshire’s 551 for eight declared.Middlesex had begun the day needing to regroup after losing Stoneman shortly before Monday’s close, a dismissal that felt like a critical breakthrough by left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White, and Nottinghamshire had their tails up when Pattinson removed nightwatchman Tom Helm with his first ball of the morning, leaving them five down and 445 runs in arrears. But on a hard, dry surface that was still playing true for the batters, their second attempt at regrouping succeeded, with Simpson and Holden able to make steady progress. Patterson-White set himself for a long day, unable to contain a yelp of exasperation from time to time when the ball spun past the bat without material gain, while none of the seamers was able to create any real drama, even when Pattinson started bowling short at Holden to a 6-3 leg side field in the half-hour before lunch. Both parties in the partnership went past fifty, in Holden’s case for the fifth time this season, and had added 111 out of 217 for five at lunch, which left them still 334 behind but in better shape than they might have feared. The afternoon brought more of the same, yet it ended with Nottinghamshire in the ascendancy after both fell without reaching three figures.Holden went just before the second new ball became available, caught at slip off Ben Slater, who has kept his offspin mothballed for most of his career but has employed it twice to good effect this season in similar circumstances and now has two first-class wickets to his name.Alex Thomson of Derbyshire was his first victim. Whether Holden was genuinely was a moot point, certainly in the opinion of Holden himself, who appeared to have avoided any contact with a ball that spat up and over his head, dropping to his haunches in apparent disbelief as umpire Paul Baldwin raised the finger.Whatever the merits of the decision, it ended a partnership of 142 for the sixth wicket. Simpson, though, certainly did get a touch as he perished eight short of what would have been his second hundred of the season, driving at a ball from Pattinson but succeeding only in edging into the hands of Joe Clarke at slip.He and Hollman had added 73 for the seventh wicket, the 21-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder completing his half-century soon after tea with his 11th boundary.Martin Andersson’s positive approach helped Middlesex to a fourth batting bonus point and raised the possibility that the follow-on might be avoided. But those hopes receded as Hollman hooked Paterson into the hands of deep square leg, the South African picking up a third victim when Toby Roland-Jones was lbw trying to work the ball to leg. Pattinson wrapped things up when Andersson miscued to midwicket.

Amazing Yang replacement: Celtic eye club-record move for "flamboyant" ace

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is in the market to add reinforcements to his playing squad before the January transfer window officially slams shut at the start of next month.

The Northern Irish head coach has led his team to be 15 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and his side have already won the League Cup, beating Rangers on penalties at Hampden Park last month.

However, the former Liverpool and Leicester City boss still wants to continue to improve the team and is making moves to add more quality to the group.

Rodgers looks set to have to wait until the end of the season to welcome one of his targets to the club, though, as Celtic are reportedly close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with Kieran Tierney, which would see the Scotland international return for a second spell at Parkhead.

The left-back’s contract with Premier League giants Arsenal is due to expire in the summer and the Hoops are poised to snap him up on a free transfer ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

As well as strengthening the defence, Rodgers is also in the market to add to his attacking options and that could be of concern to Hyun-jun Yang, who has struggled at times this season.

Hyun-jun Yang's form for Celtic this season

The 22-year-old forward enjoyed one of his brightest performances of the 2024/25 campaign on Saturday in the 4-1 win over Ross County away from home, starting on the left flank.

He won nine of his 14 duels, created three chances for his teammates, and won the penalty that Arne Engels eventually scored from, across 90 minutes on the pitch.

There were plenty of promising signs from the South Korean winger but it was yet another match that passed him by without a goal or an assist to show for his efforts, albeit some may argue that winning a penalty should constitute an assist.

The Hoops attacker has now failed to find the back of the net or register any assists in any of his 12 appearances in the Premiership this season for the club, despite starting six of those matches.

Rodgers, as shown by Yang being a starter on six occasions in the division, has provided the 2023 summer signing with plenty of opportunities to shine at the top end of the pitch, but has not got much back in the way of quality in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the South Korean youth international also struggled to produce consistent quality for Celtic in the Premiership last season, with four goal contributions in 24 matches.

This means that Yang has only scored one goal in 36 league games for the Scottish giants to date, which illustrates his lack of impact since his move to the club ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Rodgers and Celtic could, now, finally move on from the underperforming flop by swooping to sign one of their reported transfer targets in his position this month.

Celtic's interest in wing wizard

It was recently reported by Italian outlet Il Messaggero, as relayed by Sport Witness, that Celtic are interested in a deal to sign Lazio winger Gustaf Isaksen ahead of the second half of the season.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that Rodgers and Celtic are looking to swoop in to secure a deal for the Danish maestro in the January transfer window, after they failed to land him in the summer.

It revealed that Serie A side Bologna are also eyeing up a move for the 23-year-old star and this means that the Premiership champions may have to move swiftly to win the race for his services.

Isaksen is said to be valued at around £12.5m by Lazio, who are prepared to listen to offers for the forward, albeit they would prefer a summer transfer, and that would make him a club-record buy for Celtic.

The Hoops initially smashed their transfer record in the summer with an £11m deal to bring Arne Engels to Parkhead from German side Augsburg, which means that a £12.5m swoop for the Lazio ace would make him the most expensive signing in club history.

What signing Isaksen could mean for Yang

If Rodgers and Celtic decide to go through with a deal for Isaksen then that could be bad news for Yang and his prospects of playing regular minutes for the team moving forward.

He has started six times in the league so far this term and the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda have both been ahead of him in the pecking order, as well as James Forrest before his current injury lay-off.

The arrival of another high-quality forward option in those areas would, therefore, send Yang further down the pecking order and potentially force him to consider his short-term future at Parkhead.

Isaksen has produced six goals and seven assists in 62 matches for Lazio to date, which is not an outstanding return, but his form for FC Midtjylland in his home country suggests that the potential is there for him to offer far more at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed right winger provided a regular goal threat in his last season in the Danish top-flight before his move to Italy in the summer of 2023.

Isaksen, who was once described as a “flamboyant” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is a player who could come in with the potential to carry a huge threat in front of goal for Celtic, if Rodgers can help him to rediscover his best form.

Yang, meanwhile, has been less-than-impressive as a goalscorer for the Hoops and signing Isaksen in a club-record swoop would allow the club to finally move on from the winger, who has yet to prove that he has what it takes to be a regular starter for the Bhoys moving forward.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes Kane, 31, will head back to the Premier League one day in a bid to topple record scorer Shearer. Sherwood has also suggested that Kane may retire from football at the age of 36.

    WHAT TIM SHERWOOD SAID

He told OLBG: "Harry Kane will have a go at Alan Shearer’s record. I think he’ll be back in the Premier League and he’ll have one eye on that record and why wouldn’t you. He might decide to come home at one stage and there'll be a lot of takers for him. Harry Kane will play until he's 35, 36 years of age, I'm convinced of that. So he's got a lot of time yet. I can only think of one person who doesn't want him coming back, and that's Alan Shearer."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane sits second in the all-time Premier League scoring books, with 213 goals compared to Newcastle United legend Shearer's 260. The England international could beat that feat but he would have to head back to English football soon, and for now he is happy at Bayern. However, Kane has not ruled out a Premier League return at some point.

    WHAT NEXT?

Transfer speculation aside, Kane could feature for Bayern on Friday away at Augsburg in the Bundesliga. Vincent Kompany's side are on course to wrestle the title back from Bayer Leverkusen, and also have a Champions League quarter-final to look forward to against Inter.
