Marco Silva now personally wants Fulham to sign "strong" £42m midfielder

As Fulham look to turn a strong start into an excellent season, Marco Silva now reportedly wants the Cottagers to sign an in-demand Serie A midfielder before the end of the month.

Fulham transfer news

The West London club have already had some moments to remember in the current campaign, with a late win over Brentford up there with a shock comeback victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bride. Sat as high as 9th thanks to their efforts, Fulham could now look to put the January transfer window to good use and eye surprise European qualification.

Fulham eyeing move to sign Premier League "leader" who may replace Pereira

He could arrive at a bargain price…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 2, 2025

As the transfer window rolls on, a number of names have already been mentioned too. Recent reports have linked the likes of Igor Jesus and James McAtee to Craven Cottage in two moves that would only improve Silva’s frontline even further. Crucially, Jesus would also provide the former Everton manager with a long-term replacement for the ageing Raul Jimenez.

McAtee, meanwhile, would instantly replace Andreas Pereira amid concerns that the Brazilian could be heading for the exit door and to Fluminense in his home country this month. Even after the Manchester City man, however, Fulham could still welcome further additions in the middle of the park.

According to reports in Spain, Silva now personally wants Fulham to sign Douglas Luiz this month in what is likely to be a short-term loan deal away from Juventus. The midfielder has struggled since swapping Aston Villa for the Italian giants in a reported £42m move in the summer and already needs a fresh start.

There’s plenty of interest in his signature alongside Fulham too. The likes of Manchester United and even former club Aston Villa are also reportedly eyeing January moves to open quite the race for his services.

Winning such a race would certainly lay down a marker for Fulham and perhaps create a statement only a side gunning for European football are in position to make.

"Strong" Luiz would complete Fulham midfield

If Fulham are looking to shock the rest of the Premier League by finishing inside a European place – be that the Europa League or Europa Conference League – then welcoming Luiz would certainly be wise. The Brazilian played a vital part in Aston Villa’s unexpected Champions League qualification last season to earn Juventus’ interest.

What could hand the Cottagers a welcomed boost in pursuit of Luiz’s signature is the fact that he’s under the same agency as Pereira – an agency that Fulham should know well amid recent attempts to keep hold of their midfielder.

Despite a slow start in Italy, Villa sporting director Monchi has still been full of praise for his former midfielder from afar, telling reporters as relayed by Tribal Football earlier this month: “He’s playing less than we all expected, but we’re talking about a strong player.

“There are guys who arrive and impose themselves, others who need time. Patience is needed, but Douglas’ qualities are beyond discussion. He will become important for Juve. He’s a playmaker and every ball that comes out of his feet has a meaning: last year he played 90% of the games with us. He was decisive.”

Rangers now eyeing move to sign "highly-rated" new midfielder in January

Rangers are among the teams interested in signing a “highly-rated” midfielder from the English Championship in this transfer window, according to a recent report.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers made it back-to-back wins on Wednesday night, as they brushed aside Aberdeen 3-0 to ease a bit of the pressure on manager Philippe Clement. Despite the victory, Rangers remain 13 points behind leaders Celtic, and for that reason, the Scottish side could be busy in what remains of this January transfer window.

Instead of talking about who could arrive at Ibrox however, this month has so far been more about who could leave the club. It was reported earlier this week that Rangers could look to sell striker Cyriel Dessers. The forward, who got on the scoresheet against Aberdeen, has been in and out of the side in recent weeks, and given there is interest from Italy, Rangers could “sacrifice” the player this month.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The Gers also look set to lose winger Rabbi Matondo, as the club have agreed to loan him out to an unnamed European club, who will have a £2 million option at the end of it. The 24-year-old is another player who has fallen down the pecking order at Ibrox and now looks set to move on.

Meanwhile, it has also been claimed that West Ham are leading the race to sign Vaclav Cerny at the end of his loan with the Gers, making it harder for the Scottish giants to secure his services beyond this campaign.

Rangers eyeing move to sign "highly-rated" player this month

As there could be a few exits on the cards at Ibrox, the Gers now have their eyes on a potential incoming, as Football Insider reports that Rangers are eying a move to sign Allan Campbell from Luton Town this month.

Campbell is currently on loan at League One side Charlton Athletic but is said to be keen on a move back to Scotland this month, and that has alerted the interest of Rangers as well as Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibernian, who could look to make a permanent move for the midfielder.

The 26-year-old is already known in the Scottish Premiership, as he came through the academy at Motherwell. Campbell played 160 times for the Scottish side, scoring 16 goals in the process, and one of those came against the Gers during the 2017/18 campaign, when he netted in a 2-2 draw.

Campbell, who was labelled as “highly-rated” by Graham Alexander while at Motherwell, was an excellent performer for Motherwell, and that earned him his move to Luton in 2021. However, after two seasons as a regular, he has now lost his place at Kenilworth Road, and his future appears away from the club.

Campbell’s ability to play across multiple positions in midfield would make him a very useful addition for Clement at the moment.

Mandhana, Kemp and spinners sink van Niekerk-less Invincibles

Mandhana’s 46 helped Brave to 153 for 8, and Invincibles never got going in the chase

Matt Roller14-Aug-2022Oval Invincibles are defending champions in the Hundred and eased to a nine-wicket win on the opening night of the women’s competition on Wednesday. But three days later, their season is in turmoil after they made a shock call to omit captain Dane van Niekerk from their side, then slipped to a 12-run defeat against Southern Brave in a rematch of last year’s final in the south London sunshine.Marizanne Kapp was fit to return after missing the opening game through illness and her return demanded a tough call, with four top-class overseas players in the squad and only three permitted in the playing XI. Jonathan Batty, Invincibles’ head coach, was expected to leave out Suzie Bates, but her innings of 46 off 34 against Northern Superchargers saw her keep her place.Instead, van Niekerk made way, and Invincibles never got going in her absence. Smriti Mandhana hit the first two balls of the innings for four after Bates, deputising as captain, chose to bowl, and her innings of 46 led Brave to 153 for 8, the highest women’s Hundred total at The Oval. In the chase, Kapp, Bates and Lauren Winfield-Hill made bright starts, but failed to turn their cameos into innings of substance as Brave’s spinners closed out a comfortable win in front of a 14,525 crowd.Mandhana magic
Mandhana missed the final week of the Hundred last year, returning home to see her family before flying to Australia for India’s tour, and their batting wasn’t the same without her: in the final, they folded to 73 all out – which represented something of a recovery from 14 for 6. While there is no guarantee she would have kept out Kapp’s high-class opening spell on that day, this was a reminder of what Brave had missed. She was up and running immediately, creaming her first ball – from Kapp, no less – through the covers for four and hit six fours in her first 13 deliveries, punishing Kapp and Shabnim Ismail when they missed their lengths. When she slog-swept Mady Villiers for four at the start of the ninth, she was a hit away from a half-century after just 24 balls, but was beaten in the flight by her 25th and stumped by Winfield-Hill.”I was timing the ball well,” Mandhana told Sky Sports at the interval. “When you get a first-ball boundary, that gives you a lot of confidence. I was really disappointed to get out – I think it’s a crime to get out in the 40s after batting so well – and really disappointed that I couldn’t play at least until the 90th ball.”Sophia Smale had the wickets of Danni Wyatt and Tahlia McGrath to show•ECB/Getty ImagesBrave keep coming
Invincibles took regular wickets through the middle phase, with 17-year-old left-arm spinner Sophia Smale keeping a lid on the scoring, but Charlotte Edwards has made a point of building a side with a long batting line-up and they continued to attack throughout the innings: Mandhana aside, no batter reached even 25 but their intent dragged them up to a defendable total.Freya Kemp and Georgia Adams’ partnership of 45 off 24 balls for the sixth wicket was particularly crucial, and highlighted the extent to which Brave’s lower-order firepower has emboldened their batters to attack: rather than a major setback, each dismissal resembles one batter handing the baton over to the next.Oval’s overseas dilemma
Batty’s decision to leave out his captain, and the MVP across the tournament’s first season, was a gamble that backfired. “She led them to the trophy last year,” Lydia Greenway said on Sky. “From a coach’s point of view, if you feel like you need to make a big call like that, you have to go for it. The challenge they will have is if they lose today, how will they manage that?”In her absence, Invincibles needed their overseas trio to step up and prove their worth; perhaps inevitably, they struggled to make any impact. Kapp and Ismail were uncharacteristically loose with the new ball and at the death, returning combined figures of 0 for 67 from 40 balls. With the bat, Bates hit 15 off 8 balls and Kapp crunched 19 off 9, but both fell without making a lasting impact. With Alice Capsey sidelined due to the ankle injury she picked up fielding in Invincibles’ opening game, their domestic players were left with too much to do. Ryana Macdonald-Gay’s late hitting put a dent in Amanda-Jade Wellington’s figures but by then, tight spells from part-time offspinners Adams (2 for 16 from 20) and Danni Wyatt (2 for 16 from 10) had seen the asking rate spiral out of control.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Ruben Amorim's side will now aim to beat Lyon in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final fixture at home on Thursday and book their berth in the last-four stage.

Romano: Euro club now make approach for Southampton star alongside Dibling

A European club have made an approach for a “brilliant” Southampton player, according to a fresh update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Latest Southampton news

The Saints were beaten 3-1 at home to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, with the hosts producing a spirited showing, but ultimately once again leaking too many goals to get a positive result.

Southampton’s defeat means they are now 10 points adrift of safety in the Premier League, sitting rooted to the bottom of the table and staring a swift return to the Championship in the face.

Southampton managerIvanJuricbefore the match

If Ivan Juric’s side are to have any chance of beating the drop, some transfer business is needed between now and the end of the current window, and Cardiff City winger Ollie Tanner has been linked with a move to St Mary’s before deadline day ends. He has two goals and assists apiece in the Championship this season.

There is a risk that Southampton could lose players this month, though, and in the summer for that matter, and Tyler Dibling is one of the most prized assets at the club. He is reportedly wanted by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, as they look to snap up a huge young talent.

Galatasaray want "brilliant" Southampton player

Writing on X on Sunday, Romano said that Galatasaray have made an approach to Southampton for the services of Kyle Walker-Peters, as Saints weigh up his future:

Losing Walker-Peters would be a bitter blow for Southampton, but in truth, it is something that they may have to prepare for, assuming they are relegated from the Premier League this season.

That said, the Saints must do all they can to retain the right-back services until at least the end of the current campaign, having been lauded as “brilliant” by former manager Russell Martin.

To lose Walker-Peters midway through the campaign would only be another setback in Southampton’s quest to avoid the drop, so the club should only consider a sale if a huge bid comes their way.

If that happens, Saint may have to look at the bigger picture, seeing the funds received for the defender as beneficial in the summer, allowing Juric to rebuild his squad.

For now, though, Walker-Peters hopefully won’t be off to Galatasaray, or any other club for that matter, continuing to stand out as a hugely important player between now and May.

He wants Ibrox move: Rangers facing Itten repeat with 6 ft 4 "warrior"

Glasgow Rangers have had varying degrees of success with regard to signing players from Europe over the previous few years.

The Ibrox side don’t have the financial power to challenge those in the Premier League for players, which means the likes of La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and the top flight down south of the border tend to be avoided, especially those at the upper echelons.

As such, the Light Blues tend to target other leagues, where talented players can be picked up rather cheaply, before potentially being sold for a profit.

Recently, Mohamed Diomande (FC Nordsjaelland) and Hamza Igamane (AS FAR) joined from clubs typically outside the norm. Still, there is no doubt the pair are extraordinarily talented and will eventually play in one of Europe’s big leagues.

Hamza Igamane

Sometimes, these types of moves don’t exactly work out as planned. Take Eros Grezda, Carlos Pena, and Eduardo Herrera as prime examples. Signed from leagues in Mexico and Croatia, the trio failed to settle in Glasgow, underperforming massively and costing the club a fortune in transfer fees and wages.

One of the worst signings of recent memory – taking into account value for money – was that of Cedric Itten. The Swiss striker was expected to fire the Gers into a new era. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go to plan…

Cedric Itten’s statistics for Rangers

In the summer of 2020, with the pandemic causing havoc, Steven Gerrard was working hard to build a squad capable of ending Celtic’s domestic hegemony.

In came Joe Aribo, Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe and Calvin Bassey, while Itten was another arrival as the manager aimed to bolster his attacking options.

The centre-forward had registered 27 goal contributions for FC St. Gallen during the 2019/20 campaign, which certainly impressed Gerrard enough to pay £3m for the player, hoping he would be able to find the same sort of success in Scotland.

Cedric Itten

Itten did manage to make 37 appearances in all competitions, although just nine of them came in the starting XI. Overall, he scored six goals and grabbed three assists as the Light Blues won their first Premiership title in a decade.

The Swiss was sent out on loan to the Bundesliga, scoring twice for Greuther Fürth, before Giovanni van Bronckhorst recalled him in January 2022.

He failed to take this unexpected second chance, however, netting only two goals during the second half of the season, and it was evident his days at Ibrox were numbered.

The Dutch manager accepted an offer of £1.5m for Itten, who moved back to Switzerland to join BSC Young Boys. During his spell in Scotland, Itten failed to showcase his true talents.

Since returning to his homeland, Itten has scored 44 goals across the previous two and a half seasons, helping his team secure two league titles on the spin.

Could the Light Blues be facing a repeat of this during the current transfer window, however? There’s a defender who currently plays in Itten’s homeland for FC Zurich and has been linked with a return to Glasgow.

Former Rangers star wants Ibrox return

A couple of weeks ago, the Daily Record reported that former Ibrox centre-back Nikola Katic was keen on making a return to Rangers amid the defensive crisis that was engulfing the club.

More recent news concerning the defender states that he is considering his future in Zurich as (via the Daily Record) are ramping up a move back to Ibrox this month.

Nikola Katic

He is now training away from the first team amid a possible exit, but making a move for Katic should be the last thing on Philippe Clement’s mind, that’s for sure.

Why Nikola Katic should be avoided

With John Souttar, Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasinwirjo all injured, Clement hasn’t had much choice but to slot youngster Clinton Nsiala into the starting XI for his first taste of senior football in recent weeks.

The former AC Milan defender has handled the pressure rather well and looks like a wonderful talent. Add in the fact that Leon King is also at the club, and bringing back Katic must be avoided.

The Croatian centre-back joined the Gers during the summer of 2018, going on to make 30 appearances across all competitions in his maiden season.

The 2019/20 campaign saw the 6 foot 4 titan register his finest moment at the club, scoring the winner against Celtic at Parkhead in December 2019 – the club’s first victory at the ground in nine years – and this endeared him to the supporters.

During his time at the club, Gerrard even hailed him as a “warrior”, with his physical nature more than a match for opposition strikers. He had plenty to work on, but with more experience in the starting XI, Katic looked like he would grow into a formidable centre-back.

Disaster struck in 2020, however, as he suffered a serious knee injury which ruled him out for the entire title-winning season. To secure more game time, Katic joined Hajduk Split on a season-long loan deal in 2021, before moving permanently to FC Zurich in 2022.

In the Swiss Super League this term, Katic has succeeded with 80% of his passes, while being dribbled past 0.9 times, winning just 49% of his ground duels contested and losing possession 12.1 times per match on average.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

These statistics are hardly impressive, indicating that Clement must look elsewhere if he wants to add some more defensive cover to his team.

Making a move for Katic would surely be a repeat of the Itten transfer from Switzerland a few years ago. The club can’t afford to get it wrong, especially with finances tight at the moment.

There is only a week left of the January transfer window, and only one player has joined the Gers so far. The Belgian will be under serious pressure to move some deadwood and announce a new arrival or two during that time.

Everton close in on "excellent" £17m winger as Moyes’ first January signing

Everton have reached a £17m agreement to sign an “excellent” attacking player in the January transfer window, according to a fresh update from RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins.

Latest Everton news

The Blues made a disappointing start to life under David Moyes on Wednesday evening, losing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League. It leaves them sitting 16th in the table ahead of Sunday’s visit of a struggling Tottenham side, which is a huge game for both teams.

Everton supporters would no doubt love to see new signings arrive this month and Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah is believed to be an option. The Merseysiders have been linked with the young speedster as they look to improve their attacking options.

Olympique Lyonnais'ErnestNuamahduring the match

The Blues are also believed to have been offered the chance to sign former Chelsea and Arsenal winger Willian in January, with the Brazilian currently a free agent. At 36, he may not be the force he once was, but that’s not to say that he couldn’t be a good signing for Moyes, who will know the importance of adding more firepower to his squad.

Everton have reportedly made contact over a move for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson, too, with a loan move until the end of the season mooted for the Irishman. He has struggled for minutes at the Amex since August, so a temporary switch to Goodison Park could benefit all parties – if they can get Armando Broja off the books first.

Everton reach agreement to sign "excellent" winger

According to Hawkins on X, Everton have reached an agreement with Lyon for the signing of Nuamah. A deal of around £17m has been sealed, with “negotiations” currently ongoing with the player to finalise personal terms, which are not expected to be a problem.

This is a hugely encouraging update from a Blues perspective, with a move for Nuamah seemingly edging closer all the time. The 21-year-old has been hailed by compatriot Asamaoh Gyan, who has called him “excellent”, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as “outrageous”.

At 21 years of age, the Ghanaian is an extremely young player who is still maturing as a footballer, so it would be unfair to expect consistent brilliance every week, but he can still come in and be a great option from the off.
