After turning down Arsenal’s shock late bid to sign Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa are now reportedly facing a fresh fight to keep hold of another one of Unai Emery’s top talents.
Aston Villa transfer news
The Villans came out of the January transfer window on the winning side. Despite losing Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr in a big-money move, Emery was able to welcome as many as five fresh faces in the form of Donyell Malen, Andres Garcia, Marcus Rashford, Axel Disasi and Marco Asensio.
Rashford and Asensio are particularly exciting additions given their pedigree at the top of European football and represent just how far Aston Villa have come in recent years. From relegation troubles, those in the Midlands have just won the race to sign a serial Champions League winner in Asensio.
On the exit front, things could have been far worse for the Villans too following Arsenal’s reported bid to sign Watkins, which was turned down and left those at Villa Park furious late in the window.
That fury doesn’t seem to have scared the Gunners off, however. According to Graeme Bailey, Arsenal are now plotting a move to sign Jacob Ramsey this summer to hand Aston Villa a fresh battle to keep hold of a key man.
Aston Villa may now use contract doubts to land "strong" Duran replacement
He’s a man in demand…
ByTom Cunningham Feb 6, 2025
Whilst injuries have held the midfielder back at times, he remains a talented academy graduate and someone that Villa should look to keep, especially amid interest from a top four rival and a club they weren’t best pleased with not so long ago.
"Terrific" Ramsey still important at Aston Villa
Still just 23 years old, early injury concerns throughout his career should not stand in the way of Ramsey’s clear talent. After missing almost the entirety of December, the academy graduate has bounced back and even broke his goalscoring drought in a recent draw against West Ham United. Now, if he can remain fit, Ramsey could become a key man under Emery as the fixtures come thick and fast.
Of course, it wasn’t so long ago that Premier League legend Steven Gerrard was full of praise for Ramsey, with the former Villa manager telling reporters in 2022: “He’s not following in anyone’s footsteps. Jacob Ramsey is Jacob Ramsey. He will be a terrific player. It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”
It’s a level that the 23-year-old will want to get back to and should want to do so at his boyhood club rather than at Premier League rivals Arsenal. Whether those in the Midlands can win another battle against the Gunners on the transfer front remains to be seen, but it certainly looks likely to be an interesting summer window.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Dan Burn secured all three points for Newcastle against Ipswich on Saturday and ensured the Tractor Boys will be playing Championship football once again next season. A tough afternoon for Ipswich started badly when Ben Johnson was sent off in the first half, before a penalty on the stroke of half-time from Isak gave the visitors a mountain to climb. Further goals from Dan Burn and William Osula finished Ipswich off and ensured they claim the final relegation spot in the Premier League for the 2024-25 season.

There's no doubt it's been a tough season for Ipswich. Kieran McKenna's side have managed just four wins in the Premier League, while defeat to Newcastle was their 21st from 34 matches in the English top flight. A tough summer may be in the offing too, with top Premier League clubs believed to be interested in striker Liam Delap who could be set to depart the club for £30 million.

Bastante treino, graças a deus fui feliz.
In his autobiography, the former Australia Test captain details how he felt the board went back on their word by forcing him to resign
Andrew McGlashan24-Oct-2022Tim Paine has said he felt “abandoned” by Cricket Australia when the story of an explicit text-message exchange emerged last year and led to him resigning as Test captain shortly before the Ashes. For the first time, in his autobiography which is out on Tuesday, Paine addresses what effectively became the end of his international career following the emergence of the messages with a female employee of Cricket Tasmania in 2017. At the time, he was investigated and cleared by the CA integrity unit, which found that the messages were consensual and did not breach the code of conduct, but in , he admits to living with the uncertainty of when the story would emerge, although he says he did not think the fallout would be so dramatic.Related

Ponting reveals Langer might be interested in coaching Hurricanes
He documents how, after CA and his manager James Henderson had failed to stop the publication of the story last November, it became clear during a phone call with CA chief executive Nick Hockley and an unnamed “consultant” from outside the organisation, that the board would not back him to remain as captain.”The consultant then said that the best way to get ahead of the story was if I stood down as captain,” Paine writes. “I was stunned by that, so was James. Who was this guy? What did he know about the circumstances? That was the first time anyone had mentioned me resigning as captain. There was no way I was doing that. I knew what had happened. Cricket Australia knew what had happened and, in my mind, this guy didn’t know, or worse than that, it was like he believed that I had sexually harassed her.”Then Nick chimed in, saying how experienced this guy was and how he thought I should listen to his advice.”I said, ‘Do you want me to resign as Test captain, Nick?’ He couldn’t give me a straight answer, or wouldn’t. He kept talking in circles.”It was becoming obvious what Cricket Australia wanted me to do but they didn’t have the courage to say it themselves…”…I hadn’t seen it coming. It was obvious the board wanted me to resign and I had no option if they weren’t going to back me. I felt they were driven by the need to protect their image, they’d got in someone to look after them and he’d decided that I had to be sacrificed to save them, they were hanging me out to dry.”The morning after the phone call, Paine contacted Hockley and Richard Freudenstein, the interim CA chair, to say he would stand down.”I was disappointed and I was tired of this. I was prepared to cop the flak for what I did, but in my mind Cricket Australia had abandoned me and made it look like they thought I’d sexually harassed someone and so everyone else would think so too.”
“The reality was they were happy to defend me and accept I hadn’t breached their code of conduct as long as it was kept private. If the story hadn’t run, I would still be captain and if Cricket Australia had handled it like they said they would I would still be playing for Australia”
Shortly after Paine stood down, CA held a press conference where Freudenstein said that the CA board of 2021 would have handled the original investigation differently and not endorsed Paine as captain. After standing down, Paine initially remained available for selection for the Ashes but soon withdrew and took a break from the game.”The reality was they were happy to defend me and accept I hadn’t breached their code of conduct as long as it was kept private,” Paine writes. “If the story hadn’t run, I would still be captain and if Cricket Australia had handled it like they said they would I would still be playing for Australia.”Work on Paine’s book, which begins and ends with the text messages and the fallout, started before his resignation. It opens with Paine recounting when the messages were originally sent, on the eve of the 2017-18 Ashes after his surprise recall to the team, then when the complaint against him was made shortly after he was named captain following the Newlands ball-tampering saga.”Over the years I’ve wondered why I did what I did and I don’t want to make any excuses – it was dumb, it was wrong, it was a breach of trust in my wife – but how was I so thoughtless, so self-indulgent? Why would I take such a stupid risk? I think maybe it was just a way of escaping from all the pressure I was under, it wasn’t that I was on a high about getting a second chance at Test cricket, it was a way to escape the reality of that, the stress of it.Tim Paine’s last Test was against India at the Gabba•Matt Roberts/Getty Images”I’d have given up that second chance if I could have my time over again.”Paine has returned to first-class cricket for Tasmania this season with two appearances in the Sheffield Shield. There is also a chapter dedicated to the ball-tampering on the 2018-19 tour of South Africa although Paine does not implicate anyone else from within the Australia team. He writes that he was “stunned” when the pictures of Cameron Bancroft with a piece of sandpaper were shown on the big screen.”My heart sank, I was thinking, ‘What the f***?’ A sense of dread came over us all.”Describing the day in question, he writes: “The ball wasn’t reversing for us and batting was easy. What happened next will be the subject of speculation for the rest of time. There are so many people with so many theories, so much whispering and speculation. I suspect nobody will ever be satisfied they know the full story of how we got to this place. I’m not sure I even understand myself.”A lot of commentators have said since that everybody has to know what’s going on in a dressing room, but that’s rubbish.”However, he does call the lifetime leadership ban given to David Warner – which may shortly be overturned – “one of the dumbest things” to come out of controversy. “It is unfair and unwise,” he says.
Messi and Miami had no answer for Vancouver's speed and athleticism and paid for it with a 2-0 defeat
Vancouver Whitecaps fans reportedly paid close to three times face value to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi at BC Place in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals against Inter Miami on Thursday night. The 53,837 in attendance were not disappointed.
Not only did they get a 90-minute showing from the Argentine maestro, but they also saw their hometown side pull off a stunning 2-0 upset – sparked by a brilliant headed goal from Brian White. It was all Vancouver needed in the first leg, but the job isn’t done yet. Leg 2 is set for April 30 at Chase Field in Florida.
Still, this is a result that will live long in the memory of Whitecaps supporters, especially considering what happened when these two teams met last season. During Inter Miami’s previous visit to BC Place, then-manager Tata Martino rested stars Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets due to fixture congestion – a match Miami still won 2-1. The decision sparked backlash from the Vancouver crowd and prompted Martino to publicly defend his call.
This year, with a spot in the Champions Cup final on the line, both sides fielded full-strength lineups – and it was Vancouver who seized the moment. Following a playbook that has given issues before, the Whitecaps ceded possession and waited for their chance to strike. White gave an early warning, just missing a through ball in front of goal in the third minute. About 20 minutes later, he made no mistake.
Despite Miami holding 73 percent of the ball in the first 20 minutes, it was caught out on the counter. Sebastian Berhalter picked out White with a perfectly weighted aerial pass, and the striker nodded home in the 24th minute.
Inter Miami looked flat in attack, with Messi leading the team in shots (three) but struggling to find space. Vancouver effectively denied the 37-year-old access to the box, forcing him into long-range attempts and set-piece opportunities. Two of his shots were on target, but Yohei Takaoka was up to the task with a stellar showing in goal.
Berhalter wasn’t done, either. In the 85th minute, the midfielder capped another swift counter with a rocket, sealing the match. Unless Miami can fix its persistent issues against athletic, counter-attacking sides, its Champions Cup run may be over next week.

Goalkeeper & Defense
Oscar Ustari (6/10):
There was not much he could have done with either goal, and made three other saves that would've otherwise padded Vancouver's result. Overall, he's not at fault here.
Jordi Alba (6/10):
His veteran legs proved costly in Thursday's fixture as the Whitecaps repeatedly attacked Inter Miami on the flanks in their counters. Registered two tackles, but did make an impact on attack with two chances created.
Maximiliano Falcón (7/10):
Was Miami's top performer in defense, winning seven of eight duels along with three clearances and three interceptions.
Noah Allen (6/10):
Not as impactful as usual, but still managed to have a team-high five clearances in the match.
Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):
Statistically strong with a team-high nine of 10 duels won, along with five out of six tackles. However, he was a part of the problem in defending the Whitecaps when they went wide on breaks. He struggled to stay in front of his opponent several times.

Midfield
Sergio Busquets (7/10):
Led the way for the Herons in playmaking, making 93 passes with a 92.5 percent accuracy. He also put in a shift defensively, having three tackles and winning five of eight duels. Still, his lack of pace was a part of the problem and played a role in Vancouver's effectiveness in counterattacking.
Federico Redondo(5/10):
Accurate with his passing, but that was about it. He lost four of his seven duels and was mistake-prone, and got a yellow card. Subbed off at the 70th-minute.
Tadeo Allende (6/10):
Defended more than he usually does and struggled in that area. He tried to make an impact on attack, but was ineffective. Was still sadly one of Inter Miami's best attacking threats on the night.
Telasco Segovia (5/10):
Created a chance and helped with keeping possession, but similar to his midfield counterparts, he had no answer for the pace and speed of Vancouver in the center of the park. Subbed off in the 74th minute.

Attack
Luis Suarez (5/10):
These are the types of matches where the Uruguayan heavily struggles. If teams stack the box, the 38-year-old simply can't beat defenders like he did at Liverpool and Barcelona a decade ago. He was largely invisible on the night, taking two shots inside the box and not hitting the target.
Lionel Messi (7/10):
Miami's only attacking threat, and his frustration was evident, especially midway through the first half after missing a long-range opportunity. Following the missed shot, he spent about two minutes barking back and forth with Andrés Cubas. His best opportunity came late on a free-kick that was blocked by Takaoka.

Subs & Manager
Yannick Bright (5/10):
Subbed with 20 minutes remaining, not his usual destroyer self, but could be forgiven considering the time he had to make an impact.
Benjamin Cremaschi (5/10):
Came on with 15 minutes left and struggled to make an impact, losing all three duels he was involved with and wasn't his best with passing either.
Javier Mascherano (6/10):
The Argentine has been a breath of fresh air for Inter Miami this season, but this wasn't his night as he was outcoached by his counterpart in Jesper Sørensen. This was a game that screamed for an inclusion of pace and he made just two substitutions on the night. Bringing on Cremaschi earlier, along with trying Fafa Picault – a former Whitecap who didn't see action – could have made the difference.
Manchester City are certainly not hanging about in the January transfer window. Pep Guardiola has already made three signings, with Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis making the move to The Etihad this money to bolster the squad.
Considering the poor run of form that the club have been on since November last year, winning just five times in all competitions during that time, some fresh additions were needed.
With just over a week left of the winter window, it doesn’t look like Guardiola is finished there, as he could be set to sign another player or two ahead of a crucial few months.
One move might be closer than the rest…
Man City ready bid for Juventus star
According to the Gazzetta, City will make a bid for Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso sooner rather than later in an attempt to lure him from the Serie A side.
The report goes on to state that a bid of around €65m (£54m) could be made, although the Italian side value the 24-year-old at €80m (£67.5m), which could make a deal slightly more difficult to seal.
It remains to be seen, though, whether or not the Cityzens are prepared to go as high as £67.5m to strike an agreement to bring the Juventus ace to England this month.
It is clear that Guardiola is now building a team for the future. After their poor displays, the current era of City dominance could come to an end unless they move quickly to rebuild their side, which is what they appear to be doing.
Cambiaso would be an excellent addition, especially as he is similar to another City transfer target…
Andrea Cambiaso could be City’s own Joshua Kimmich
Guardiola is showing plenty of interest in reuniting with Kimmich. His contract expires at the end of the season, although Bayern Munich are keen on extending his deal.
The 29-year-old has amassed over 400 competitive appearances for the Bavarian side, which speaks to his experience at the top level.
While signing him would be a statement of intent, Cambiaso has displayed qualities recently that could make him a better signing, especially in the long run.
According to FBref, Kimmich is the sixth-most comparable player to Cambiaso over the previous 365 days based on their respective statistical profiles.
Indeed, the pair have even registered similar statistics across a range of metrics this season, including pass success rate (89.4% vs 89.8%), shot-creating actions per 90 (3.88 vs 4.89), tackles won (21 vs 19) and percentage of dribblers tackled (60.6% vs 66.7%) for their respective teams.
Hailed as “versatile” by commentator Leonardo Bertozzi, Cambiaso can play across the entire back four, which is a big bonus for Guardiola.

He has missed only three matches for Juventus this season, primarily playing on the left side of the defence, but he has been deployed on the right flank at times too, even playing once as a right-winger.
At 24, Cambiaso has yet to reach his peak years and if City can secure a deal to sign him before the window closes, it will be another excellent signing made by the club this month, no doubt about that.

However, at the time of writing, Postecoglou still remains without star striker Dominic Solanke, alongside centre-back trio Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero due to injury.
“It does make a massive difference,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s returning players from injury. “Getting guys like Vic and Madders contributing straight away, you can see the quality they have and the presence they have.
“As you said I can put guys on and for guys like Brennan and Wilson, Vic, Madders to a certain extent, it might take them one or two games to get up to speed, but the fact we have them available, yeah, it’s an enormous boost for us.
James Maddison celebrates for Tottenham
“It was an important game for us and an important week. We needed to put in a performance today to get us the result and I think we did that. That coupled with the fact that we’ve got some significant players back, and they got through the game.
“They got through unscathed and really contributed, it was important for us. It signals a little bit of an opportunity for us to push on from here.”
In the background, Levy, Lange and the Lilywhites recruitment team will be mindful of making sure they’re less likely to be plunged into a player-selection crisis next season.
Tottenham make offer to Lille midfielder Angel Gomes
According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Lille midfielder Angel Gomes is a summer target for the club.
The England international is out of contract at the end of 2024/2025 and available as a free agent, piquing interest from north London. It is believed that Tottenham have already made a transfer offer to Gomes after holding talks, following failed negotiations with his teammate at Lille, Jonathan David.
Spurs are seriously pushing for the midfield technician, with a return to the Premier League described as possible, while David appears most likely to head to Barcelona despite some discussions with Postecoglou’s side.
However, that being said, Man United are still in the picture, and Gomes’ former club could well tempt him with a return to Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old has impressed over the last two seasons for Lille, earning a call-up to the Three Lions squad in that time, with former interim boss Lee Carsley describing Gomes as a “very skilful” player.
