McTominay has proven to be a smash hit at the Serie A side after moving to the club in the summer transfer window from Manchester United. The Scot has already been handed a new McFratm (McBro) nickname and a shrine has now been spotted in the historic heart of the city, dedicated to the Scotland international.

McTominay has bagged 11 goals in Serie A this season and helped fire Napoli to the top of the table. Antonio Conte's side have a three-point lead with just three games left to play and will be hoping to win the Scudetto in McTominay's first season at the club. The Scot's performances have ensured he's also become something of a cult hero already at the club, with one fan having shown off a new tattoo in honour of the midfielder. Meanwhile, the new artwork evokes memories of the late great Diego Maradona who features in murals across the city.

McTominay's shrine can be found in the narrow Vico San Nicola a Nilo street in Naples. The artwork contains the words 'McFratm' and the initials 'N4' and also features rosaries, flowers and candles.

Chelsea hold fresh talks to sign £85m striker after request from Maresca

Chelsea chiefs have held “fresh” negotiations over signing a marquee centre-forward this week, following a personal request from manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea targeting new forward and midfielder before deadline day

The Premier League top four chasers have suffered a slight dip in form lately, winning just one of their last five top flight matches, and their latest defeat at the hands of Man City was swiftly followed by a behind-closed-doors meeting.

That is according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, via his Substack, who also claimed that Maresca reiterated his desire to bring in a new striker during these internal talks with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

The tactician also apparently shared how he’s still minus a particular profile of midfielder, which has led to Chelsea’s reliably reported interest in Man United starlet Kobbie Mainoo throughout January, but Maresca is also believed to be keen on players with more experience.

Chelsea’s decision to activate their recall clause and bring back Trevoh Chalobah solves their centre-back issue, and the Englishman may even act as a possible replacement for Axel Disasi, who is being seriously targeted by Aston Villa amid reports of agreed personal terms.

However, Maresca is still allegedly in the market for both a striker and engine room technician. Interestingly, as per Phillips, Villa’s serious interest in both Disasi and summer signing João Félix could re-open the door for Chelsea to swoop for Jhon Duran.

Chelsea hold fresh talks over signing Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

It is believed that Chelsea sense an opportunity to reignite a move for the Colombian, and Disasi would be used as a sweetener in any deal, as the Blues attempt to make Villa relax their reported £85 million price tag.

After being given encouragement in the form of Unai Emery targeting Maresca’s outcasts, Phillips writes that Chelsea have held “fresh talks” over signing Duran this week, and they’ve also approached the player’s agents to gauge whether he’d be keen on swapping the Midlands for London.

“Chelsea are sensing a deal for Jhon Duran potentially being back on the cards,” wrote Phillips.

“They have asked about him in recent conversations with Villa for Axel Disasi and Felix. Disasi would be sent on loan as a ‘sweetener’ to any Duran deal, although he could still end up going there anyway because the player has expressed his desire to go out and play this window.

“Villa told Chelsea a high price tag for Duran when they enquired again last week, but fresh talks have happened again this week. Chelsea feel that if Villa were open to offers that came in for Duran last week (from West Ham), then they would be up for a discussion, especially if they want Felix and Disasi. On the player side, I have no idea if he would accept a move to Chelsea, but we have been speaking to his agents again this week to see if it is possible.”

The 21-year-old has bagged 12 goals in 29 appearances throughout 2024/2025, mainly as a very impactful substitute behind Ollie Watkins, and he could be an excellent alternative to Nicolas Jackson.

Rangers must now ditch "anonymous" 2/10 ace alongside James Tavernier

Glasgow Rangers’ hopes of winning domestic silverware ended on Sunday afternoon as Queen’s Park delivered a stunning upset to knock the Ibrox side out of the Scottish Cup.

The result is arguably one of the worst in the club’s illustrious history, right up there with the defeat to Berwick in 1967 and Hamilton in 1987, both early exits in the Scottish Cup.

Given the disparity between squads and the fact Rangers were playing at home, everything pointed to a routine home win. Philippe Clement even gave a first start to Bailey Rice, the brightest prospect to emerge from the academy in quite some time.

Rangers managerPhilippeClementbefore the match

Surprisingly, the tie was evenly poised heading into the final 20 minutes as the Light Blues were labouring. Queen’s Park secured a corner from which Seb Drozd scored a sublime goal to open the scoring for the Glasgow side.

With just minutes left on the clock, the Gers were awarded a penalty after Cyriel Dessers was pushed in the box. The pressure rested on James Tavernier to slot the ball home and send the tie to extra time.

Goalkeeper Calum Ferrie produced a fine stop to deny the captain and the Ibrox side couldn’t score from the resulting corner, slipping to a 1-0 defeat.

This defeat surely settles Clement’s future, as a manager with no credit in the bank won’t be able to survive a loss like this.

It shouldn’t just be the manager who is on their last legs, however, especially as Tavernier delivered a soulless performance which proves exactly why he should be moved on at the first available opportunity.

Why James Tavernier must leave Rangers

Tavernier’s 268 goal contributions – 129 goals and 139 assists – across 496 matches for the Gers is a wonderful record, no doubt about that.

With regards to trophies won, however, his record is fairly dismal. Since joining the club in the summer of 2015, Tavernier has won just three major honours; the 2020/21 Premiership crown, the 2022 Scottish Cup and the 2023 League Cup.

Celtic have been utterly dominant during this period and Tavernier has hid under the pressure, especially when the Gers are on the cusp of something special. Take last season for example. The Light Blues had clawed ground back on Celtic in the title race, they blew it by losing against Motherwell and Ross County, allowing the Parkhead side to surge ahead once again.

The less said about the current campaign the better. With the loss to Queen’s Park, Rangers’ domestic season is over, and it is only the start of February.

While his penalty miss will be the main topic of discussion, his performance against the second-tier outfit was terrible, lacking any sort of desire or dynamism. More importantly, it lacked heart.

Glasgow World journalist Ben Banks gave Tavernier a match rating of 2/10 for his display against the Spiders, explaining that the defender ‘couldn’t clear the ball on the line and failed to offer much of an attacking threat. Couldn’t lead his team out of a crisis then missed a penalty’.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers' other biggest underperformer against Queen's Park

It wasn’t just the Englishman who failed to deliver during the game. Nedim Bajrami has come under some criticism of late due to a host of underwhelming displays.

Clement unleashed the Albanian against Queen’s Park and many expected him to bounce back with a solid performance. Unfortunately, he was one of the worst players on the pitch.

The 25-year-old looked like an inspired signing when Clement paid £3.4m to secure his signature from Italian side Sassuolo.

Since then, Bajrami has played 33 games for the Light Blues, registering eight assists – four goals and four assists – during that time.

He has demonstrated a glimpse of his talents over the previous few months. A goal against Malmö on his European debut appeared to show that Bajrami would be a great addition to the squad.

The attacking midfielder also scored the winner against Motherwell in the League Cup semi-final back in November, but since then, he has largely been ineffective.

Stevie Clifford, who runs Four Lads Had a Dream, criticised the Albanian last month regarding his recent poor displays, saying:

Deployed on the left wing against the Championship side, Bajrami failed to link up well with Ianis Hagi, who operated in a more advanced role, or Hamza Igamane, during the match.

He was so poor that Clement subbed him at half-time, bringing on Dessers in his place.

Banks also gave him a match rating of 2/10 for his insipid performance at Ibrox stating that he was ‘found seriously wanting and not for the first time. Subbed at half-time after no impact’.

The next few months will be crucial if he wishes to extend his spell at Rangers beyond the summer. It is highly unlikely that Clement will still be in charge by that point, so much will depend on whether the new manager sees Bajrami as part of his plans.

A summer clear-out is required, no doubt about that. Tavernier and Bajrami could well be the top two players on the list that supporters will be keen to see leave Glasgow.

What next for Rangers? In the aftermath of arguably the worst result in the club’s recent history, Patrick Stewart and the board have some big questions that need to be answered.

The supporters won’t be happy until Clement leaves. He can take Tavernier and Bajrami with him, too.

As bad as Tavernier: 2/10 flop just ended Rangers' chance of a trophy

Suryakumar leads India's charge to top of Group 2

Suryakumar Yadav’s astonishing death-overs hitting launched India to a commanding 186 for 5 – Suryakumar’s share being 61 not out off 25. India’s quicks then shut the game down quickly, reducing Zimbabwe to 28 for 3 by the end of the powerplay, then 36 for 5 soon after. There were patches of Zimbabwe resistance. In India’s innings, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza combined to take a wicket in each of the 12th, 13th and 14th overs. Then Raza and Ryan Burl put on 60 off 35 for the sixth wicket, though Zimbabwe’s run rate never really caught up to the requirement. But otherwise, India crushed it. KL Rahul hit his second successive fifty, making 51 off 35. Virat Kohli reclaimed his spot atop the tournament run-getters list with his 26 off 25.Then Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar used swing beautifully to take a wicket in each of their first overs, before Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya also got among the wickets. R Ashwin finished things off, taking 3 for 22 from his four overs. The result was a 71-run victory.Suryakumar’s spectacular fine-leg hits
Where do you bowl to Suryakumar? England will now have to try to figure this out before their semi-final on Thursday. There was a gorgeous six over extra cover off Tendai Chatara to close out the 18th over, but the more impressive shots came over fine leg. Zimbabwe stacked the off side and tried to go full and wide to Suryakumar. The batter, though, kept throwing his front leg away to the offside, sometimes as far as the wide markers on the crease. Then he swept two of those balls with such immense power as to almost defy physics, all the way over the fine-leg boundary.Last ball of the innings was another wide full toss, but because fine leg was back for this, Suryakumar went with more of a scoop, shovelling it over his left shoulder, the ball carrying just over the rope once again.Rahul gets India humming
It had been Rahul who did most to give Suryakumar the platform, though. Having batted out a maiden against Richard Ngarava first up, he hit a six way over deep square leg midway through Ngarava’s next over, and seemed in good touch from then on.There were two more sixes, both down the ground, the second of which brought up his half-century. But in between, plenty of smart running, particularly in the company of Virat Kohli.Ryan Burl and Sikandar Raza added 60 off 35 balls for the sixth wicket but never really threatened•Getty Images

Zimbabwe’s brief squeeze
Despite Rahul’s fifty, Zimbabwe did launch a fightback, between the 12th and 15th overs. Williams first got Kohli out, having him caught at long-off. Next over, Raza dismissed Rahul, slowing the ball up, and having him give a high catch to long-off again, when Rahul had tried to repeat the six that had taken him past fifty, previous ball. The third wicket was down to an outstanding running catch from Burl, who was at long-on to left-hander Rishabh Pant. Pant nailed one flat and hard off the bowling of Williams, but Burl sprinted full tilt along the boundary to get both hands to it, completing the catch with a dive.India’s quicks blast out Zimbabwe’s top order
After India had hit 83 runs off the last six overs of their innings, India’s seamers made a Zimbabwe win all but impossible inside the powerplay. A late-swinging Bhuvneshwar delivery was almost middled by Wessly Madhevere, but not far away from Kohli at short cover, who took a sharp catch diving low to his right.Next over, Arshdeep swung one through the defences of Regis Chakabva. Then late in the powerplay, Williams slashed one to deep third. When Hardik Pandya had Craig Ervine caught and bowled in the seventh over, and Shami nailed Tony Munyonga in front the over after that, the road was too steep.Even Burl and Raza’s excellent stand never really threatened.

On Sunday, Bayern Munich women completed a strong Frauen-Bundesliga season with a 3-0 win against SGS Essen, lifting their third straight league title. Key midfield player Georgia Stanway celebrated as the squad completed an unbeaten second half of the season, which included winning all 11 games, and gave departing head coach Alexander Straus a fitting send-off. Bayern ended the season eight points ahead of VfL Wolfsburg, winning the trophy with a 19-2-1 record. It was the perfect end to a remarkable season that also saw Bayern women claim the domestic double, while their men's team, with Englishmen Harry Kane and Eric Dier in the team, were confirmed as champions of the men's version of the Bundesliga on May 11.

Georgia Stanway moved to Bayern from Manchester City in 2022 and has now won her second consecutive league title with the German giants. The win on the final day, that Stanway missed due to injury, was not just about securing the trophy; it also marked a celebration for five departing players and the farewell of head coach Straus, who delivered three straight league titles. As soon as the final whistle blew, the celebrations began. Club officials Herbert Hainer and Jan-Christian Dreesen were present to witness the significant occasion, with the game marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for Bayern’s women’s team.

6 strikers Arsenal could have bought in January, including £160m longshot

Prior to the start of the 2024/25 season, Arsenal fans will have been calling out for the club to sign a new striker.

Having narrowly missed out on Premier League glory in two consecutive seasons and not bought an established centre-forward since Gabriel Jesus’ arrival in 2022, a world-class striker could have been the missing piece to finally push them over the line and secure the title.

However, Mikel Arteta once again began the campaign with the same attacking options he had in the previous season – Jesus and Kai Havertz – leaving many questioning whether this would be enough to compete again.

Come January, when Jesus was ruled out for the remainder of the year with injury, it would seem this would prompt the Gunners into action in the transfer market.

But yet again, no move materialised, despite a few half-hearted efforts. And soon after Havertz was ruled out for the rest of the season in February, the club’s title challenge has unravelled before their eyes.

6 players Arteta nearly signed for Arsenal

The Gunners have missed out on some top players who could’ve made all the difference in their title run-ins…

ByDominic Lund Feb 11, 2025

Though it may now be too late, we have listed six strikers Arsenal could have signed in January to bolster their squad.

1 Ollie Watkins Aston Villa

Starting with the striker Arsenal came closest to landing in January, the Gunners made a last-ditch attempt to sign Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. However, their advances were swiftly rebuffed by both the club and the player himself.

According to BBC Sport, Villa rejected Arsenal’s interest, as they had – and still have – no intention of parting ways with the 29-year-old striker.

Additionally, Watkins reportedly told Villa manager Unai Emery to turn down Arsenal’s offer, as he was determined to stay at Villa Park and continue his development with the Midlands club.

Since joining Aston Villa from Brentford for an initial £28m in 2020, Watkins has been a standout performer, registering 81 goals in 201 appearances for the club. His pace, work ethic, and clinical finishing make him a formidable striker, and he would have been a strong addition to Arsenal’s squad for the second half of the season and beyond.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, despite their interest, their approach was deemed insufficient to convince both Villa and Watkins to make a move. As a result, the Gunners missed out on one of the Premier League’s most reliable strikers, who remains a key figure for Villa moving forward.

2 Alexander Isak Newcastle United

It was highly unlikely that Arsenal could have secured Alexander Isak in January, as Newcastle United made it clear that they had no intention of selling the Swedish forward. Isak has been in sensational form this season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions, including the only goal in a 1-0 win over Arsenal back in November.

Despite the low chances of a move, if Arsenal had made the right offer, it wouldn’t have been entirely impossible to land the striker.

Isak doesn’t have a release clause in his contract, but according to The Sun, Newcastle reportedly may have been willing to let him go for a staggering £160m.

Of course, Arsenal were never going to pay that figure, nor is it likely that any club ever will, but if they did, they would have acquired one of the hottest and most talented strikers in world football.

At just 25 years old, Isak would not only have been a key addition to Arsenal’s attack for many years to come, but could have been the difference-maker in firing the Gunners to their first Premier League title in over two decades.

6 players Arsenal should sign this summer

Can Arsenal finally find the striker to fire them to a Premier League title?

ByBarney Lane Feb 6, 2025 3 Matheus Cunha Wolverhampton Wanderers

Another player heavily linked with a move to the Emirates in January, Matheus Cunha has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, despite playing for a struggling Wolves side.

The Brazil international has scored 13 Premier League goals this campaign, many of which have been sensational, and his overall play has been a delight to watch. Cunha has impressed with his elegant dribbling, clever movement off the ball and ability to link up seamlessly with teammates.

He was also linked with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham, but with no bid incoming, Cunha stayed put at Molineux, signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract with the club. In an interview after the deal was completed, Cunha made it clear that he had no intentions of leaving Wolves anytime soon.

“I never think about leaving, honestly,” he said. “I am so happy to be here. I hope to continue doing good things.”

However, Cunha’s new contract does include a release clause of around £60m, which can be activated in the summer. If Wolves face relegation, it’s likely that the clause will be triggered, and Arsenal won’t be the only club vying for his signature once more.

ByBen Browning Feb 14, 2025 4 Marcus Rashford Manchester United/Aston Villa

Aston Villa's MarcusRashfordreacts after the match

Marcus Rashford’s long-standing association with Manchester United came to an end in January as the English forward joined Aston Villa on loan, with the Villans holding the option to sign him permanently for £40m in the summer.

Since the move, Rashford appears to have rediscovered the kind of form that once saw him hailed as one of the best young talents in world football. Most recently, he recorded two assists in Villa’s 2-1 win over Chelsea, further highlighting his resurgence under Unai Emery.

However, it could have been Arsenal reaping the rewards of Rashford’s revival rather than Villa.

According to Sky Italia journalist Massimo Marianella, the Gunners did indeed hold discussions with Manchester United about signing Rashford before he joined Villa. Despite these talks, Mikel Arteta ultimately decided against pursuing a deal for the 27-year-old.

In hindsight, that decision now looks questionable, particularly given Rashford’s impressive start to life at Villa Park. As the forward regains his form and confidence, Arsenal fans must be wondering if they missed a golden opportunity to bring a player of his calibre to the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta's 10 worst Arsenal transfer flops – ranked

Mikel Arteta doesn’t always get it right in the transfer market, but who are his biggest mistakes?

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 17, 2025 5 Jonathan David Lille

Jonathan David has long been a target for Arsenal, thanks to his impressive performances in Ligue 1 and Europe for Lille.

Since joining the French side in 2020, the Canadian striker has made an undeniable impact, scoring 104 goals and providing 27 assists in 219 appearances and winning Ligue 1 in 2020/21.

This season alone, he has notched up 20 goals and 9 assists in just 36 games, proving to be one of the most lethal forwards in Europe.

According to the Mail, Arsenal explored the possibility of signing David in January, but despite reports suggesting that the 25-year-old could be available for a cut-price fee, no deal materialised. Lille were reportedly open to selling him for less than his market value in order to avoid losing him for free when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Fortunately for Arsenal, David has expressed his desire to make a move to the Premier League in the near future.

“My future? Focused on getting this great club back to Europe where it belongs. The rest will come,” he said, as per Sky Sports in March 2023. “Premier League? One of the best leagues in the world, why not?”

12 players who could become free agents in summer 2025

These players are entering the final months of their contracts, meaning they could be on the move very soon…

ByRoss Kilvington May 27, 2025 6 Victor Osimhen Napoli/Galatasaray

Victor Osimhen’s name is often linked with major transfers, and during the January window, reports suggested Arsenal made a push for the Nigerian striker.

Osimhen helped Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990, but after being frozen out by manager Antonio Conte and failing to secure a permanent move away last summer, he joined Turkish side Galatasaray on loan.

Since then, he has impressed in Istanbul, scoring 20 goals in 25 games across all competitions, including six in seven games in the Europa League.

According to Football Insider, Arsenal made contact with Napoli for a potential late January move, but the transfer ultimately didn’t materialise and he remained at Galatasaray.

A player of Osimhen’s calibre would have been a major boost to Arsenal’s attack, and with Napoli reportedly keen to offload him, he could have been available for a relatively cut-price fee of around £55m – a bargain for someone of his quality.

However, Osimhen is not expected to stay in Turkey beyond this season, nor will he likely return to Napoli, which means his excellent form for Galatasaray will surely attract suitors, Arsenal included, again in the summer.
