Arsenal hunting "exciting" £25m signing who's the "clone" of a Gunners star

Arsenal are now keen on signing an “exciting” player, who is a “clone” of one of their current first-team stars, with a potential deal likely to amount to over £25m, according to a report.

Arsenal's summer transfer plans

The Gunners are looking at strengthening their squad in a number of areas this summer, with a new striker likely to be high on the list of priorities, and there has now been a positive update on their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

There is now a belief that Sesko has opted to make the move to north London in the summer transfer window, despite widespread interest in the Slovenian’s signature, with Chelsea and Manchester United also keen.

Striker is not the only area in which Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta are looking for reinforcements, however, with talks over a deal for AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen recently being opened, having identified the centre-back as a key target.

David Raya has been a reliable option between the sticks for Arteta, but the north Londoners are now showing an interest in signing a new goalkeeper, given that Neto is set to return to parent club Bournemouth in the summer.

That is according to a report from The Sun, which states Arsenal are now keen on signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who could join alongside teammate Omar El Hilali.

The goalkeeper is expected to cost upwards of £25m, given his importance to Espanyol, but there is a possibility the Spanish side will not be willing to sell two of their key players during the same transfer window.

"Exciting" Garcia impressing in La Liga

Garcia has been lauded as “exciting” by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who also claims the Espanyol star is a “clone of David Raya” due to his ability both on the ball and when it comes to dealing with crosses.

The 6-foot-3 colossus put in a Man of the Match performance against Real Madrid in La Liga this season, and Mattinson believes he has a lot of potential.

As such, should the Spaniard be willing to play second fiddle, Arsenal should definitely make a move this summer, and Arteta will be hoping bringing in a strong second-choice keeper causes Raya to up his game.

However, the situation which led to Aaron Ramsdale’s departure will serve as a warning of the problems that can arise when two top goalkeepers are competing for the same position.

Fabrizio Romano: £163k-per-week Arsenal player "not staying" and will leave

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Arsenal and their transfer plans for the summer, with a decision seemingly already made on one squad member’s future.

Arsenal draw 0-0 with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League

Mikel Arteta’s side were arguably out of the Premier League title race before their goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, but Arteta was very frustrated by the disappointing result on Wednesday evening, which leaves them even more adrift of Liverpool.

The Gunners have scheduled a meeting.

“Very disappointing not to win it,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Forest.

“Today, the standards were very different to the previous game; the energy, the willingness to make things happened. We certainly tried many different ways, we dominated the game apart from one spell in the second half after one or two direct free-kicks where they had something in the box and one or two giveaways that allowed them to run, apart from that nothing. With the amount of situations we generated, with the moments we opened them up, we lacked the final pass, the quality on that delivery and certainly more shots on target to actually win it and be more efficient.

“We tried and adapting the quality that we have, how we can help the team to create different things, to have threats from different qualities, probably they are not about arriving in the box and creating some magic moments, they are other kinds of players. Try to adapt to that and do the best that we can.”

The Gunners are still in with a shot of clinching this year’s Champions League crown, but it will be a tall order considering their lack of an out-and-out striker, so minds are already on how they can best prepare for next campaign.

Arsenal are targeting a new striker this summer, amid claims that Gabriel Jesus could be out injured until 2026, while the lack of a quality alternative to the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli has seriously hamstrung Arsenal going forward.

Arsenal set to let Raheem Sterling return to Chelsea

There have been concerns surrounding summer arrival Raheem Sterling as an option, with the £163,000-per-week Englishman proving ineffective overall following his loan move from Chelsea last year.

According to Romano, speaking to GiveMeSport, Arteta and co have already made a firm decision in regard to Sterling’s future.

It is believed that the Gunners are set to let him return to Chelsea and won’t be negotiating a permanent deal for the 30-year-old, so he won’t be an Arsenal player this time next season.

“Expecting the player to deliver more for the final months of the season,” said Romano. “Then the expectation is for Sterling to return to Chelsea and not staying at Arsenal next season. That’s the clear feeling internally.”

The winger has bagged just one goal and two assists in 21 appearances across all competitions throughout 24/25, so it is clear why Arsenal aren’t inclined to negotiate his stay beyond this season.

Denis Bouanga delivers in extra time as LAFC beat Club América in richest North America soccer match to book 2025 Club World Cup ticket

Los Angeles FC are heading to the Club World Cup – and they’re $10 million richer – after a stunning 2-1 extra-time upset over Club América.

América entered the match as the favorite, but LAFC represented MLS well. The hosts tested America's goalkeeper Luis Malagón early with a close-range shot on target and threatened repeatedly on the counter. Still, began to impose their will after the break, building momentum and pushing possession above 60 percent. Then, disaster struck for the in the 63rd minute.

Erick Sánchez broke into the box and fired a shot just as Mark Delgado came flying in to block. The LAFC midfielder clipped Sánchez’s leg after the attempt, and the referee pointed to the spot. Former LAFC star Brian Rodríguez coolly converted the penalty to give Club América the lead.

But the late introduction of Olivier Giroud would shift the tide. The Frenchman, still finding his footing in MLS, used his size and instincts to spark the attack. He forced two point-blank saves from Malagón, nearly set up Denis Bouanga for an equalizer, and earned a corner that would prove decisive.

Club América’s grip weakened following a mass substitution, including the exit of U.S. international Alejandro Zendejas. LAFC pounced. Igor Jesus capitalized on some sloppy defending to score his first goal for the club and level the match at the 89th minute. The hosts followed with a flurry of corners, two of which fell to rising young attacker David Martínez – both efforts sailing high into the stands.

In extra time, LAFC were largely on the back foot. But in the 115th minute, one final counter delivered the knockout blow. Bouanga, still flying after 90-plus minutes of action, sprinted past his defender and slotted a precise finish past Malagón in a one-on-one. América couldn’t muster a response with five minutes left – sealing the victory for LAFC.

LAFC celebrated not only the win but the record $10 million purse in what was dubbed the most expensive club match in North American history. Their next reward? A date with recent Europa Conference League winners Chelsea FC, which Giroud starred for from 2018-21, in the Club World Cup on June 16.

THE MVP: DENIS BOUANGA

LAFC had no shortage of heroes on the night. Jesus leveled the match late. Timothy Tillman was a ball-winning machine, making crucial tackle after crucial tackle. Giroud changed the game with his presence and athleticism.

But make no mistake, LAFC doesn't win this match without Bouanga.

The 30-year-old was electric from the first whistle and covered every blade of grass across all 120 minutes. Even as Club América keyed in on him defensively, Bouanga never let up. His 115th-minute winner was a deserved payoff for a performance that easily could’ve included another goal or assist.

After helping LAFC win the 2022 MLS Cup and now delivering in the CWC playoff, Bouanga should be considered an icon in . That’s how monumental this performance – and his impact over the past three years – has been.

AFPTHE BIG LOSER: ANDRE JARDINE

Delgado would have walked away with this had LAFC lost, but in a game of tight margins, America boss Andre Jardine will have questions asked of him.

In particular, his decision to make several substitutions right before a corner for LAFC in the 88th minute cost as they conceded immediately after. While he can point to some of the injuries on America – especially lead striker Henry Martin – as reasons why the team lost, America still had the edge due to their depth and higher payroll.

Also, America struggled to score throughout the Liga MX playoffs – why weren't there better adjustments made?

£20m Leeds transfer target pushing for Elland Road move in boost for Farke

A Leeds United target is now reportedly pushing for a move to Elland Road in what will be a huge boost for head coach Daniel Farke as he eyes a return to the Premier League.

Leeds in three-horse race for automatic promotion

Leeds are vying for promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League at the second time of asking this season.

Farke’s squad narrowly missed out on promotion in the 2023/24 season, falling 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final after securing third place in the Championship.

This season, the Whites are instead on course for automatic promotion, currently sitting top the table on goal difference with just eight games to play ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

Off the pitch, the club appears to be already preparing for next season – whether that’s in the Premier League or the Championship – with a number of transfer targets reportedly already on their radar.

Among those are Southampton striker Cameron Archer, who was a target for Farke in January, while, according to reports from Africa Foot, the Yorkshire club are also keen on signing Almeria forward Ibrahima Kone in the summer.

Likened to Romelu Lukaku for his physical prowess, Kone is currently on loan at Al Okhdood in Saudi Arabia. However, it’s unlikely he will remain with the club beyond the current season, with Almeria reportedly ready to offload him elsewhere for around €10 million (£8.4 million) in the summer.

Phillips pushing for Leeds return

Another man supposedly on Leeds wishlist is former midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

A recent report from TEAMtalk revealed that Leeds already have a verbal agreement with Phillips, who is currently on loan at Ipswich Town from Manchester City, to return to Elland Road if Farke’s side secures promotion.

City are aware of Leeds’ interest and are unlikely to block the move, provided the 49ers table an offer of around £20 million.

It was previously unclear whether Phillips would be open to returning to Leeds, but now, there’s been some good news for Farke and the club’s fans, courtesy of Football Insider: He is.

According to the publication, it is believed that Phillips is eager to return to Leeds and is pushing for a move, where he hopes the support of the fans and backing of the club will help him revive his stalling career.

Phillips also hopes that the move could help him work his way back into the England fold, having now not featured for the Three Lions since 2023.

Phillips has previously been described as “exceptional” by City boss Pep Guardiola. Just months after he moved to the Etihad Stadium, the Spanish head coach said of the English midfielder, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano: “Kalvin, exceptional in many things. Why he doesn’t play? Rodri, key for us.”

“Never, ever makes one action against mates that play, or a bad face, training bad. I’d love to give him as much minutes as possible.”

Stuart Broad fires Ashes warning as new outswinger outsmarts Middlesex

“It’s designed for Marnus and Smith,” says veteran seamer of latest action tweak

Vithushan Ehantharajah22-Apr-2023Stuart Broad, bopping around Lord’s in Nottinghamshire stash. Stuart Broad posting candid shots of a ground he’s playing at for the 29th time in his career to his Instagram story. Stuart Broad, commuting in from Wimbledon, on the underground for the first two days of this fixture with Middlesex, and probably again on Sunday after driving in on Saturday, given it’s the London Marathon. He’ll take a view in the morning. For those that lament county cricket’s loss of quaintness, Broad has spent the last three days embodying the modern oddities it still harbours. And he made a clear distinction that, whatever tweeness remains in this thing we all care for, imperfections and all, it does not need to be dismissed as irreverent whimsy. Everything that happened counted, everything that happened mattered. With 4 for 68, the veteran England seamer led Nottinghamshire to a 90-run first-innings lead which swelled to 248 by stumps. Through 22 overs, the 36-year-old stepped up his tapering for an international schedule of six Tests across seven weeks – two of them back here at Lord’s – with an Ashes series in full view for one of its recurring main characters.Having picked up Pieter Malan with the final ball on Friday, Broad’s gutting of a spluttering Middlesex engine room contained nuggets of things to come. Most notably an outswinger brought about by technical changes workshopped with Notts bowling coach Kevin Shine – primarily through holding his bowling hand higher to allow smoother flow into release.Last week’s uprooting of Cameron Bancroft’s off stump was exactly this, leaving Broad encouraged at its development. It is a developing weapon in his armoury with other, higher-profile Australians in its sights.”It’s designed, to be honest, for Marnus [Labuschagne] and [Steve] Smith,” Broad said. “It’s the reason I wanted to change something, to try and bring their outside edge in more.”My stock delivery will always be wobble seam trying to nip back on off stump, because I think that’s the most dangerous ball. But to those guys, I think dragging them across with away swing is important. So this action tweak is pretty much designed at those two, and it was good to see it really swinging away today.”Bar a yorker to Luke Hollman that swung into the left-hander to trap him lbw, the delivery was mostly a prop, dragging the odd right-hander outside off stump with a 2023 Dukes ball far better than 2022’s. “It couldn’t be any worse, to be honest,” Broad said.At present, he is down for two more Championship matches before the Ireland Test at the start of June. Notts have the next round off, before hosting Lancashire and Essex at Trent Bridge. James Anderson, currently toiling on a flat one against Somerset, messaged Broad on Saturday with an early request for a green seamer. Alas, for all Broad’s pull, that decision rests in someone else’s hands. But the aims of doing right for Notts and himself – and England – run parallel over the next month.”Four feels like a good number,” Broad said, “to try and make a good impact for Notts but also to get workloads where I want them to be. I wanted to backload quite a few overs in this period because of the Ashes.”No bowler’s going to play six games in seven weeks. I want to be able to have that workload to fall back on that if I miss two weeks Test cricket, say, or three weeks, when I get my chance I’m good to go.”The aim for the next 24 hours is to beat the rain before beating Middlesex. What looked an apocalyptic Sunday forecast seems to have dropped down a few grades in the last few hours, enough for Broad to focus on helping Notts to a second win in as many games. If, as expected, there is no play before 1pm, one imagines the visitors’ second innings won’t go beyond the 50.5 overs managed in the final half of day three. That they needed 82 overs to dismiss Middlesex in the first innings won’t bother them too much, particularly given that effort, at this juncture, is an anomaly. This was was the first time Middlesex have managed a batting point in five attempts, brought up by a full-blooded pull shot from their skipper. The bad news was Toby Roland-Jones’ boundary was more about desperation than fulfilling side quests as the hosts were nine down.A strong start of 111 for 2 was wasted when the final eight fell for just 163. The worst of it was a middle-order collapse of four for 51, as much instigated by Broad as batters wandering into traps loaded with obvious bait.Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden, Broad’s second and third, were the most culpable, partly because of telegraphed tweaks in the field. Matt Mongomery asked skipper Steven Mullaney (stood at mid-off) if he had the right angle around the corner like a van driver being guided into a parking spot by a pedestrian. Haseeb Hameed almost brought out the spirit level when adopting a carpenter’s level of accuracy to ensure he was equidistant between the catchers at square leg and midwicket,Broad’s observation from years of bowling from the Pavilion End was how often the ball travels in the air through leg slip, which now seems to be a problem area for Eskinazi. The dismissal of Holden, as it happens, was the work of Ben Duckett, who recalled Holden’s penchant for an aerial flick in that region from their days together at Northamptonshire.Yet again, Ryan Higgins was responsible for instilling some credibility, though at least this time he could build upon Mark Stoneman’s 76, the end of which – lbw to Hutton – brought the allrounder to the crease. Higgins was unperturbed by the short stuff and clinical with anything full, and crunched a pull shot well in front of square on the legside for a sixth boundary to take him to a third half-century in five innings. An attempted late cut off the very next ball from Lyndon James saw him take out his own off stump. That “favour” was returned with interest when Higgins took out James’ leg stump at about 6.30pm, bowling the right-hander around his legs and drawing more enthusiasm from those remaining in the stands. It was a very necessary inroad, ending the most productive partnership of Nottinghamshire’s second innings on 45.By then, at 133 for 6, Nottinghamshire’s lead of 223 was spilling over into daunting for the hosts, particularly with Joe Clarke settling into a groove. The early loss of Duckett for 170 less than he managed in the first innings was a mini-victory and no less than Ethan Bamber deserved for a quality set of 14 overs for his 2 for 26.Likewise, Hollman’s legspinner through Ben Slater and the lbw of Clarke after he had registered his first half-century of the season, were moments of worthwhile retaliation from Middlesex.More will be required on Sunday, however much play the weather allows. To lose this match for three defeats from three would already be catastrophic for Middlesex’s Division One survival hopes. Rain would be their saviour.

Sheffield Utd now want to sign star who will be "sold for a lot of money"

Sheffield United are expected to seek reinforcements in the summer window, especially if they are a Premier League club by the time the market opens for business.

Blades continue their hunt for automatic promotion

With this weekend’s round of EFL Championship fixtures set to produce more drama, Sheffield United’s automatic promotion hopes remain on a knife edge heading into their clash with Preston North End. Reacting from a bitterly disappointing defeat to Leeds United last Monday, the Blades saw off Queens Park Rangers to maintain their two-point advantage over Burnley.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Chris Wilder’s experience of battles to reach the top-flight could prove invaluable over the last 11 matches of the season. However, Rhys Norrington-Davies will join Harry Clarke, Tom Davies and Alfie Gilchrist on the sidelines after being forced off during an Under-21 fixture against Birmingham City.

Confirming the extent of his absence, the 57-year-old stated: “Rhys Norrington-Davies got injured in the U21 game, so that isn’t looking too good at the moment. He’s had a scan, we have taken him down to a specialist, and he won’t be available definitely for the next three games.”

Although the thought of Premier League promotion is a tantilising prospect, nobody at Bramall Lane will be going overboard. The Blades still have to travel to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday later this month alongside a potential campaign-defining clash against Burnley in their penultimate away league encounter.

Regardless, Sheffield United have taken Partick Thistle youngster Jack Braid on trial, indicating they are already building for the future irrespective of what division they end up in come 2025/26.

Exploiting avenues to acquire prodigious talent may save the club millions down the line, and Wilder’s outfit appear to be vying for a slot at the front of the queue for another Scot who is reported to be on their wishlist.

Sheffield United want to bring Lennon Miller to Bramall Lane

According to Graeme Bailey speaking to EFL Analysis, Sheffield United have joined the hunt to sign Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller. Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Sunderland among the other Championship sides believed to be vying for his signature.

In the top-flight, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring his situation, while Celtic could also strike to keep him north of the border.

Viewed by the journalist as someone who ‘is going to be sold for a lot of money’ this summer, he is valued at a minimum of £5 million by his current employers. Other outlets claim Miller could be worth up to just short of £10 million following his exploits at Fir Park, where he has yielded six goals and four assists in 30 outings this term.

Presumably, Sheffield United’s main obstacle will be edging Leeds out in the race for his signature, given their status as the Blades’ direct competitor at this point in time. Should both enter the Premier League picture over the next few months, it would be intriguing to see who out of the duo possesses more gravitational pull for a young star.

Despite operating in a crowded marketplace, it may be worth Wilder’s while to test the water this summer for Miller to ascertain if a deal to bring the Scotland Under-21 international to Bramall Lane is workable.
