    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Leeds are on the lookout for a new number nine as Patrick Bamford is not part of manager Daniel Farke's plans, and Matteo Joseph is set for a loan exit. They have been targeting Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz but with the Cottagers reluctant to sell for now, reports suggest they both want Taremi – who scored three goals in 43 games for Inter last season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Taremi, who could reportedly leave for €10 million this summer, swapped FC Porto for Inter in 2024 but he has failed to fire at the Italian giants. This is in stark contrast to the Iranian's time at Porto, where he bagged 91 goals and added 56 assists in 182 games.

Fraser-McGurk and Smith left out of Australia's T20 World Cup squad, Marsh to captain

Australia’s brightest young T20 batting talent Jake Fraser-McGurk and one of their finest three-format batters of the generation Steven Smith have both been left out of Australia’s provisional 15-member T20 World Cup squad with selectors opting to take a second specialist spinner in Ashton Agar and a spare allrounder in Cameron Green to give them more flexibility throughout the tournament. As expected, Mitchell Marsh will captain the side after Cricket Australia ratified his position as permanent T20 captain on Wednesday morning. Marsh had already led Australia in three T20I series as interim skipper over the past 12 months.Nathan Ellis has also been included as the fourth fast bowling option behind Australia’s big three Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, while Josh Inglis was also selected as the reserve wicketkeeper and utility batter behind first-choice keeper Matthew Wade.Related

  • 'Where do you fit him in?' – Hazlewood says Fraser-McGurk's time will come

  • Marsh's hamstring on track for T20 World Cup but admits he can't afford a setback

The omission of Fraser-McGurk is set to cause a stir in Australia after his stunning performances in the IPL where he has smashed three half-centuries in six innings at a ridiculous strike-rate of 233.33 despite the fact he has yet to play a T20I and has only made two ODI appearances.Smith’s omission is less of a shock despite being left out of a World Cup squad for the first time in a decade in any format. But Smith had long been on the outer in Australia’s first-choice T20I side having run the drinks through most of the 2022 World Cup. He was given a chance to open in two T20Is against India last November and two more against New Zealand in February but failed to make a case to displace Australia’s incumbent top three. The selectors opted to trust their experienced trio of Travis Head, David Warner and Marsh who were dominant at last year’s ODI World Cup. They also had long settled the middle order with Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Wade likely to be in the first-choice XI.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Green and Inglis were preferred to Fraser-McGurk and Smith in the final 15 because they can play multiple roles. Green provides cover for the injury-prone Marsh and Stoinis, while Inglis is the backup wicketkeeper but has batted in nearly every spot in the order with some success.Matthew Short was also unlucky to miss out after two outstanding BBL seasons and some excellent showings in his brief T20I appearances over the last 12 months.Chair of selectors George Bailey outlined the reasons why Agar and Green were chosen in the 15 ahead of the other candidates.”We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options,” Bailey said.”The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent.””Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly,”Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we’d like to cover. We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we wish to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming weeks in accordance with ICC regulations.”Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign.”Marsh said he was thrilled to lead the side to a World Cup.”It’s been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup,” Marsh said.”I am extremely grateful to have such a good group of people in our players and staff. We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament. We take a very experienced group to the West Indies, I very much look forward to the challenge and working alongside Andrew [McDonald], the coaches, players and staff.”

T20 World Cup squad: CSA criticised for failing to meet transformation targets

The provisional squad for the World Cup includes six players of colour, of which just one – Kagiso Rabada – is black African

Firdose Moonda14-May-2024South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad has “failed to meet the [transformation] targets set by CSA”, resulting in the board’s admission that “various initiatives that have been pursued over the years have not yielded the desired results, especially in terms of producing Black African cricketers at the highest levels”.But this will not, according to a board spokesperson, extend to interference in selection. The 15-player provisional squad includes six players of colour, of which just one – Kagiso Rabada – is black African. CSA’s current target requires the national squad to field – on average over the course of a season – six players of colour in an XI, of which at least two must be black African. They will have the opportunity to improve on the average over the 2024-25 summer but even if Reeza Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rabada and Ottniel Baartman play every game, South Africa will still miss the target of two black African players at the T20 World Cup, which has caused concern in some quarters.Related

CSA to address transformation issues holistically

For South Africa, and those who know what they know

Nortje returns in Markram-led South Africa T20 World Cup squad

Speaking on the national broadcaster, SABC, former CSA and ICC president Ray Mali criticised cricket for going “backwards” and “betraying the people who asked us to negotiate unity”, while former sports minister Fikile Mbalula, the secretary general of the ruling African National Congress, called it a “reversal of the gains of transformation”.Mali was particularly severe in his assessment of how the squad is selected and said the “system of giving a team for one person to select is not going to work in a country like ours”, while advocating for the return of a selection panel.South Africa no longer have a committee of selectors, with the decision-making power in the hands of the head coaches: Shukri Conrad (in Tests) and Rob Walter (white-ball cricket). Both coaches make the final decision in consultation with the director of cricket, Enoch Nkwe. Despite that, South Africa has missed their targets recently, particularly as not enough top black African players have been available.Walter was questioned over the squad composition when it was announced last month and at the time said his “number one imperative is to create a winning team”.He blamed the domestic system for not providing enough depth to pick a more diverse squad. “The system needs to really up the ante so that in six months, 12 months, or two years’ time, and in particular when we reach the 2027 [ODI] World Cup at home, that the demographics and the representation in our team starts to look a bit different.”

The CSA board has not insisted on Lungi Ngidi’s selection in the final 15-player squad (he is a travelling reserve), and will not influence Rob Walter’s choice on final XI, unlike what it has done in the past

CSA has, in essence, agreed with Walter by admitting that there is a lack of black African talent at the highest level and has committed to an acceleration programme for unearthing and developing players. Nkwe “presented to the Board plans for the acceleration of Black African batting talent and a plan to ensure a more representative group of players ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup on home soil,” a board representative said. “The Board endorsed these plans.”South Africa have no black African batters in the T20 World Cup squad and realistically only had one other black African player who could have been included: Lungi Ngidi. He will travel as a reserve player, with Anrich Nortje preferred because, according to Walter, he offers “raw pace”. Nortje returned from a nine-month absence at the IPL after sustaining a lower back stress fracture, and has taken seven wickets in six games while conceding 13.36 runs per over. Ngidi missed the IPL because of a hamstring injury but played for Titans in the CSA T20 Challenge, where he took eight wickets in eight matches and gave away 8.30 runs an over. The CSA board has not insisted on Ngidi’s selection in the final 15-player squad, and will not influence Walter’s choice on final XI, unlike what it has done in the past. Most notably, at the 2015 World Cup, then CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat reminded then coach Russell Domingo to choose the semi-final XI with transformation targets in mind. At the time, CSA did not have a black African quota in place but required XIs to field at least four players of colour. South Africa had started the tournament with five players of colour in the XI but that dipped to three as the tournament went on. For the semi-final, Vernon Philander was selected for the match against New Zealand ahead of Kyle Abbott.

'Great servant' – Phil Parkinson to axe two Wrexham promotion heroes ahead of Championship opener

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed that two promotion heroes do not have a future at the club ahead of their Championship opener.

Parkinson has confirmed that striker Ollie Palmer and wing-back Jacob Mendy have been told to find new teams to join for the upcoming season. The Wrexham boss, who described Palmer as a "great servant" to the Welsh outfit, also suggested there could be more exits before the transfer window shuts, without naming names.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT PARKINSON SAID

He said, via BBC Sport: "Kieffer Moore comes in, I've had a good chat with Ollie Palmer this week. He needs to go and play this season, he knows that. He's been a great servant to the club, a real key player in the climb up the divisions but he's ready to go and play, so there's an example. We spoke about Jacob Mendy a couple of weeks ago and there's other players in that category. But equally there's also a group who want to prove themselves and they're going to get the opportunity to do that. There's a lot of players who have enjoyed being a part of this club and rightly so. But they know for their own careers they need to play. If we feel that the time is right for that to happen, then we'll help it happen and get them a club where we feel it's going to be beneficial for them."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer and Mendy have enjoyed three promotions with Wrexham since signing for the club in 2022, albeit last season they had a diminished role. Both have played a huge part in helping the Red Dragons rise up from the National League but football is a cutthroat sport, and it seems their time with Wrexham is about to end.

Joey Evison holds the fort as George Balderson triggers Kent collapse

Kent 203 for 7 (Evison 50* Crawley 41, Balderson 3-62) vs LancashireKent’s Joey Evison made his third fifty of the season but could not prevent Lancashire having the best of the first day of their Vitality County Championship match against Kent at Emirates Old Trafford.Evison was helped by Grant Stewart, with whom he put on 69 for the seventh wicket, a stand in which both batsmen took the attack to Lancashire’s Test spinners, Nathan Lyon and Tom Hartley, on a cloudy afternoon in Manchester. The pair came together with their side poorly placed on 129 for six after George Balderson had taken three prime wickets in 28 balls, but their calculated aggression had enabled the visitors to reach 203 for seven, with Evison unbeaten on 50, when rain arrived five overs into the evening session and prevented any chance of a resumption. But Evison and Lyon’s aggression was in sharp contrast to the watchful opening 75 minutes of the day, in which 45 runs were scored in 17 overs. However, Kent then lost three wickets in four overs. Ben Compton was the first to go when he pushed forward to a delivery from Balderson and was caught by wicketkeeper Matty Hurst for 13.Zak Crawley then stroked a trio of fine fours off successive balls from Balderson but was dismissed for 41 in the next over when his flat-footed cover drive to Will Williams merely nicked another catch to Hurst. And Lancashire’s best period of the morning was completed a few minutes later when Balderson nipped one away from Daniel Bell-Drummond and the Kent skipper was caught by George Bell at third slip for three. But the session also ended well for the home side when Jack Leaning was bowled for four when a ball from Balderson snaked inside his loose off drive and knocked back the leg stump. That meant Kent had lost four wickets for 27 runs and it left the home side poorly placed on 76 for four at lunch.Matters got no better for Kent on the resumption when Harry Finch was pinned on the crease by Williams for three to leave the visitors on 83 for five. However, Evison showed no sign of being overawed and put on 46 with Joe Denly, who then tried to take on Jennings, the long-on fielder, and was caught by the Lancashire skipper off Lyon for 18.By mid-afternoon Lyon was bowling in tandem with Hartley, a tactic to which Evison and Stewart responded with selective attack rather than dull quiescence. Stewart showed a particular keenness to swat Lyon through the off side whenever the Australian pitched short and brought up the pair’s fifty partnership when he thumped Hartley over long-on for six.Only six balls could be bowled after tea before a brief interruption for rain and shortly after the players returned, Evison reached his fifty off 117 balls with a single off Lyon. But joy in the away dressing-room was short-lived as Stewart was caught by Luke Wells off the very next delivery when he pushed forward with uncharacteristic caution and nicked a simple catch to slip.Balderson ended the day with three for 62 and Lyon took two for 42, while Williams, who took two for 28 from 15 overs, needs just one more to bring up his 200 in first-class cricket.
