Twelve years after he last featured in India’s premier domestic first-class tournament, Virat Kohli is set to return to the Ranji Trophy. Kohli confirmed his availability to play in Delhi’s last round of group-phase matches, against Railways, from January 30 to February 2. The development was confirmed to ESPNcricinfo by Delhi head coach Sarandeep Singh.Kohli was a conspicuous absence in the squads for the penultimate round of group-phase matches, starting from January 23, when Delhi play Saurashtra in Rajkot. Both Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja confirmed they would play this match, but Kohli was ruled out after he informed the BCCI medical staff that he was still recovering from neck pain, for which he had taken an injection on January 8, three days after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in Sydney. Several other India players will also feature in the January 23 round of games, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.Related

While reviewing India’s recent run of defeats in Test cricket, against New Zealand followed by Australia, the BCCI in coordination with the team leadership group comprising head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Rohit, and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar laid down various rules including making it mandatory for centrally contracted players to feature in domestic cricket. If not on duty elsewhere, a player can opt out only with prior permission of the selection panel head, the BCCI said.It could not be confirmed if Kohli has told the Indian team management and Agarkar yet about him playing the January 30 round of Ranji games. If that match goes the distance, finishing on February 2, it would be a mere three days between that and the start of the ODI series against England on February 6. Kohli is part of the India squads for the England series followed by the Champions Trophy, where India play their first match on February 20.
Eden Gardens will host the IPL opener as well as the final, on May 25
Nagraj Gollapudi12-Jan-2025IPL 2025 is set to start on March 21 with Eden Gardens hosting both the season opener and the final on May 25. It is also understood that WPL 2025 will be held between February 7 and March 2.Ahead of the mega auction in November, the IPL had shared with the franchises the windows for the next three seasons (2025-27). For 2025, the window was between March 15 and May 25. However, with the 2025 Champions Trophy final scheduled for March 9, the IPL decided to keep close to a two-week gap between the tournaments. The full IPL schedule is expected to be out later this month. As has generally been the case, the home venue of the defending champions will host the opener and final. This season it’s Eden Gardens, home base of Kolkata Knight Riders who won IPL 2024. While Eden Gardens will also host Qualifier 2, the first two playoff matches – Qualifier 1 and Eliminator – will be played in Hyderabad. The 2025 season will comprise 74 matches, the same as the last three seasons – ten fewer than the 84 games a season listed by the IPL in 2022, when media rights for the 2023-27 cycle were sold. In the tender document for the new rights cycle, the IPL had listed a varying number of matches per season: from 74 games in 2023 and 2024, 84 in 2025 and 2026, and a maximum of 94 games for the final year of the deal in 2027. Four venues shortlisted for WPL The BCCI has also added two new venues for the WPL. Along with Mumbai and Bengaluru, Baroda and Lucknow will also host WPL games this year. The exact number of matches at each venue is not yet known as the WPL schedule is not yet out for the season scheduled to begin on February 7.

Chelsea are now preparing a £43m offer for a “world-class” Real Madrid target, who could be brought in as a replacement for Levi Colwill, according to a report.
Blues readying bid for centre-back after Colwill blow
There were always concerns that competing in the Club World Cup may have a negative knock-on effect going into the new season, and the Blues have already suffered a major injury blow, with Colwill set to miss most of the campaign due to an ACL injury.
Since then, Enzo Maresca has hinted that another centre-back could be brought in to account for the loss of the 22-year-old, with the manager saying: “It depends – we will wait and see.
“You know in our way, how important Levi has been. I spoke with him yesterday and I told him that if we achieve what we achieved last year, it is also because of him – and he was a main player for us.”
It has since been revealed that the west Londoners are expected to make a bid for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo imminently, but a Premier League centre-back has also now entered the frame as a potential option…
That is according to reports in Spain, which state Chelsea are now preparing a €50m (£43m) offer for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who is also being targeted by Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid.
Madrid are confident about securing Konate’s signature on a free transfer next summer, upon the expiration of his contract, but the Blues have now entered the race, and they are willing to pay the exact amount Liverpool are looking for.

At present, however, a move to Real Madrid is still the most likely outcome, given that the Reds are reluctant to strengthen one of their direct Premier League rivals, and the player himself is leaning towards a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
"World-class" Konate would be major coup for Chelsea
In truth, it seems unlikely that the Blues will be able to get a deal done, considering the French defender has no reason to leave the reigning Premier League champions, and Liverpool are hesitant to let him move to Stamford Bridge.
However, the Reds are at risk of losing the 26-year-old on a free transfer if they don’t cash-in this summer, which means it could be tempting to sanction a sale, and he could be a fantastic acquisition for the Blues.
The France international played a major role in Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title triumph, making 31 appearances, and journalist David Lynch believes he is now “world-class”.
Konate is clearly entering the prime of his career, and it would be a major coup if Chelsea were able to get a deal done, but it seems extremely unlikely that Arne Slot’s side will agree to a sale, given that they are already light on centre-back options.

Tasmania lost Jake Weatherald early when the left hander didn’t play a shot to a Nathan McAndrew delivery which cut back to clip off stump.Radhakrishnan and Tim Ward took the score to 70 but the latter fell just after tea. Like Weatherald, the left-handed Ward failed to offer a shot to McAndrew bowling around the wicket but was unlucky to be adjudged lbw, given the ball hit his thigh pad and appeared to be tracking over the stumps.Radhakrishnan, who has represented Australia in Under-16 and Under-19 ranks, then featured in a 66-run partnership dominated by stalwart Jordan Silk. Silk made 43 from 66 balls but was bowled by legspinner Lloyd Pope – he chopped on attempting a drive through the off-side an hour before stumps.Earlier, SA were all out for 388 in their second innings. After resuming at 272 for 6, McAndrew and Ben Manenti quickly prospered as they struck five boundaries each and featured in a 78-run partnership.Allrounder Liam Scott returned to the crease after retiring hurt on 43 because of a migraine late on day two, pushing his score to 69 not out. Tasmania quick Riley Meredith was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 81.

Mikel Arteta has hit back at Arsenal's critics after being send a "handbrake off" message by pundits following their draw against Manchester City last Sunday. Arteta's side dominated possession against City and stole a point after a last-gasp equaliser from Gabriel Martinelli at Emirates Stadium, but the Spaniard's tactics have been called into question.
Carragher & Neville criticise Arteta
Arteta opted for a three-man midfield to start against City, which comprised of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, while more attack-minded duo Eberechi Eze and Ethan Nwaneri were named on the bench. Eze was introduced in the second half and the former Crystal Palace star eventually provided the assist for Martinelli's equaliser. Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville both criticised Arteta's approach to the game. While Carragher labelled Arteta's first-half tactics as "a waste of 45 minutes", Neville said, "they’ve got to take the handbrake off".
AdvertisementGetty Images SportArteta bites back at critics
Now, responding to the former Premier League stars' criticism, Arteta told reporters: "I don’t read it (what is said), but he (Arsenal’s press officer) does tell me what the narrative is around it. If you tell me that this is the main one, and if I am surprised, I would be extremely surprised with my knowledge and my know-how and how I analyse a football game. Because it was impossible for somebody to predict such a dominance from Arsenal throughout 96 minutes, because it never happened in 17 years of Pep [Guardiola] as a manager.
"So if the narrative goes somewhere else, and we’re talking about dominance, not about something else, how can you be dominant against such a team if you have, what was the word? Handbrake. Dominance and handbrake, they are two different words. But I accept everything. I will learn more to have a different vision."
Eze workload being managed
The Arsenal boss added: "I was just surprised, because when I saw everything and watching it back and all the stats, I was surprised. But I respect everybody’s opinion. And if I can see and learn something that I haven’t seen, I’m more than happy to do so. So that’s never an issue. And, as well, I don’t think that one player makes that. When you see the behaviour of our team, if you want to define that with one player playing one position, I understand a collective sport in a completely different way.
"And then we play Ebz (Eberechi Eze) on the right-hand side. Could he play 90 minutes? That’s a question I put for myself because none of you know the load that he can do. So it’s easy to say he could have played with the start, maybe not, because he already played two games from the start. And he’s never played as a right attacking midfielder, so that’s another one. A new element for him, but all good."

Arteta's City counterpart Guardiola also faced criticism for his tactics in the Premier League clash, with many experts claiming that he copied Jose Mourinho's pragmatic blueprint to grind out a win instead of sticking to his usual fluid philosophy. Akhter, an offspinner who last turned out for Bangladesh in 2022, is the first international women’s cricketer to be banned on charges of corruption

Bangladesh offspinner Shohely Akhter has become the first female cricketer to be banned for corruption. Akhter, who has played two ODIs and 13 T20Is, was found guilty of attempting to fix, offering a bribe and failing to disclose full details of an approach to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code (ACU), as well as obstructing the investigation. She has been banned for five years from all cricket after she admitted breaching five provisions of the anti-corruption code. The charges against her centre around an approach she made to a Bangladesh cricketer during the 2023 Women’s T20 World held in South Africa. Akhter, 36, was not part of the Bangladesh playing squad for that World Cup, having last played in October 2022.The ACU’s investigation focused on Shohely’s conversation on Facebook Messenger with the cricketer on February 14, 2023. It was the day of the T20 World Cup match between Bangladesh and Australia. She made an offer of 2 million Bangladeshi Taka (USD 16,400 approx.) to the player to get out hit wicket during the match. The player who was approached by Akhter reported the matter to the ACU immediately, providing all the voice notes from Shohely, who had deleted those files on her devices. When interviewed by the ACU, Shohely confirmed that she did send the voice messages to the player but initially claimed that “she only did so in order to show her friend that members of the Bangladesh team were not involved in fixing, not because she was genuinely making a corrupt approach”.In her first interview with the ACU, Akhter showed the ACU screenshots which she claimed were a conversation between her and a friend about the “challenge”. She said that these messages had been exchanged prior to February 14, when she contacted the Bangladesh player. The ACU however confirmed that those files were created after February 14 by “reviewing underlying metadata for the messages”.In deciding on the length of her ban, the ICC said it had considered the circumstances of the case, “including giving Ms Akther credit for agreeing an outcome that avoids the need for a hearing and so saves considerable time and money for use elsewhere in the fight against corruption, and has considered relevant precedents.”The ICC therefore considers that a period of ineligibility of five (5) years is reasonable and proportionate. Ms Akhter has agreed to this sanction. As such, a period of ineligibility of five (5) years is imposed.”As such, neither Akhter nor the ICC has any right of appeal against this decision. The ACU which oversees all senior international cricket, does not make public information on investigations that do not lead to charges, but it is believed that a small number of investigations around women’s events have taken place in the past. This, however, is believed to be the first time an investigation of an attempt to corrupt at a women’s event has reached a conclusion with charges.
Former Real Madrid footballer Alvaro Benito provided his thoughts on the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony, which saw Ousmane Dembele being crowned as the best player in the world, ahead of rival Lamine Yamal. While Benito admitted that the PSG forward deserved the award, he was unhappy about where Pedri finished in the rankings and was brutally critical of the journalists who vote.
Dembele pips Yamal to 2025 Ballon d'Or
Dembele was crowned the world's best male player at the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris on Monday evening, beating Barcelona sensation and rival Yamal, who finished runner-up. Dembele's PSG team-mate Vitinha completed the podium by finishing third, while Mohamed Salah and Raphinha rounded out the top five.

Which 2025 Ballon d'Or rankings were shocking?
While the majority of football fans agreed that Dembele and Yamal deserved to finish in the top two, Raphinha's exclusion from the top three, as well as Pedri's exclusion from the top 10, drew the ire of the footballing fraternity. Additionally, disgruntled fans expressed their shock over Bayern Munich and England talisman Harry Kane finishing 13th after he scored 41 goals for Die Roten.
Benito reflects on the Ballon d'Or outcome
Former Madrid player Benito gave his approval to Dembele taking home the prestigious individual accolade, but didn't back away from criticising where some of the other players finished in the top 30 rankings.
"The criteria for this award do influence collective achievements, and I believe that should always be the case. But then, since it's a purely subjective assessment by the people who vote, and you see when the votes are broken down from each country, each one favors their own country or neighboring countries," he said on "That's why I don't quite believe this award. Nor can there be very objective criteria.
"Of course Dembele deserves it. He's had the best season of his career with a team that was the best in Europe from January until the end of the season, playing extraordinary football and with very good numbers.
"[But I want to make it clear] that Pedri plays football like an angel, there's no doubt about it. That Lamine Yamal is a more attractive player, well, surely. That [Kylian] Mbappe seems to me to be a better player than Dembele, well, he is. In terms of potential, the two best attackers in the world are Mbappe and Lamine Yamal. But we can't say much more about individual titles."

Yamal wins Kopa Trophy
Yamal won the Kopa Trophy for the second year in a row, with reports suggesting that the gulf between the number of votes won by the Barca wonderkid and Dembele was big. The 18-year-old's father, however, vowed that the Ballon d'Or will be Yamal's to lose next year.
It would be fair to say that Chelsea have had a good summer so far when it comes to transfers.
While they didn’t look great in the first Premier League game of the season, the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens are all incredibly talented.
Moreover, even though he’s young, Jorrel Hato has been talked about as one of the game’s next great defenders for years now, and at this point, the club look increasingly likely to sign Alejandro Garnacho.
Yet, while the Argentine is a promising player who has shown flashes of brilliance here and there, Chelsea are also being linked with another international, someone who would be a big upgrade.
Chelsea chase Garnacho upgrade
Chelsea’s interest in Garnacho is nothing new, as the club were reliably linked with him back in the January window.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
However, the West Londoners have really stepped up their pursuit of the 21-year-old this summer, and as things stand, they appear to be in direct talks with Manchester United over a transfer.
However, while it’s been made clear Garnacho wants the move, the West Londoners have been linked with another international attacker, someone who would be a significant upgrade.
At least that is according to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, who has claimed that Chelsea are in the picture for Ademola Lookman.
The journalist has revealed that following the collapse of his move to Inter Milan, the Nigerian international’s representatives have been in talks with several clubs, including the Blues.
According to other reports from earlier this summer, an offer of around £43m could be enough to tempt Atalanta into selling this summer.
While that is a sizable sum of money, it may prove to be a bargain for someone of Lookman’s quality, especially as he would be an upgrade on Lookman.
How Lookman compares to Garnacho
So, while Garnacho is a talented player and someone who could go on to do great things in the game, Lookman would undoubtedly be the better signing for Chelsea this summer, and the first reason comes down to his versatility.
Atalanta's Davide Zappacosta celebrates scoring their fifth goal with AdemolaLookman
For example, while the United ace can play in a few positions, he is primarily a left-winger, with 110 appearances coming there, 33 off the right and 27 in attacking midfield.
In contrast, the Atalanta star is far more versatile and can play practically anywhere in the attack, with 100 appearances off the left, 83 as a second striker, 62 off the right, 38 up top and 16 in attacking midfield.
In other words, the Nigerian game-changer could be played wherever he is needed, which in turn gives the manager far more tactical options ahead of and during matches.
The second reason Lookman would be a massive upgrade on the Argentine is his output.
Since moving to the Serie A side in August 2022, the “world-class” attacker, as dubbed by the BBC’s John Bennett, has scored a brilliant 52 goals and provided 25 assists in 118 appearances, totalling 7538 minutes.
That means the former Everton flop has averaged a goal involvement every 1.53 games or every 97.89 minutes since the start of the 22/23 campaign, which is frankly outstanding.

In contrast, the Madrid-born gem star has scored 26 goals and provided 22 assists in 142 appearances, totalling 8347 minutes, across the same period, which comes out to a great, but still less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.95 games, or every 173.89 minutes.
Finally, the Wandsworth-born dynamo proved that he can do it on the biggest stages when he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 Europa League final, so there he should be able to come right into Maresca’s side and be a difference-maker from the word go.
Ultimately, Garnacho is a talented player, but from practically every way you look at it, it’s clear Lookman would be a massive upgrade.
