For a free signing, Arsenal could do a lot worse than Max Meyer

Arsenal and Liverpool are set to battle over free agent Max Meyer according to Transfermarketweb.

What’s the story?

The 22-year-old midfielder is a product of the Schalke youth system but he refused to extend his contract with the German club and now is a free agent.

The German international made 24 appearances in the Bundesliga last season and is valued at £16.2million on Transfermarkt.

According to the report, Jurgen Klopp was interested in signing the young talent last summer, and now Liverpool and Arsenal are both considering making an offer for the free agent.

Where should he go?

Both Liverpool and Arsenal have strengthened in central midfield this summer and it’s hard to see Meyer breaking into Klopp’s team.

However, with Arsenal having a wealth of talent in attacking midfield but lacking more complete midfielders, Meyer could oust Granit Xhaka and partner new signing Lucas Torreira in the middle.

As a free signing, there would be little risk, but Unai Emery might want to clear out some dead wood first to make way for another midfielder in the squad.

Clearing the deadwood: It’s time for Arsenal to sell Chuba Akpom

Unai Emery has worked well with Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi to bring in five quality player to the squad this summer and it’s left Arsenal fans feelingly quietly optimistic about the season ahead.

Arsenal have seemingly found a midfielder that the club have been crying out for, a goalkeeper for Cech to contend with and two new defenders. The club may still be in the market to bring in some players up front but as has been widely reported, the club will need to sell some of their players first if they want to bring anyone in.

According to the Independent, Arsenal are close to agreeing a £2 million which would see Chuba Akpom leave to join Belgian side Sint-Truiden.

The Arsenal youth academy product looks set to leave the club and return to the side where he spent the second half of last season on loan with. Although he scored six goals in 16 for the Belgian side, the striker didn’t do enough to convince the Arsenal hierarchy that he has a future at the club.

With all young players, it’s about having luck and also seizing your opportunity, and in fairness, Akpom has never really been able to do either. The striker was incredibly close to breaking into the first team three years ago but was unfortunately sent out on loan and from there on in, his Arsenal future has been pretty much finished.

Moreover, with only one year left on his current deal, it might be the ideal time to get rid of the young striker.

Arsenal fans – thoughts?

Manchester United should sell this £16.2m-rated defender if Harry Maguire signs

As Manchester United continue to be linked with a big money move for England defender Harry Maguire, some fans will be wondering just who is going to end up making way for the big Leicester City man.

Old Trafford is arguably already full to the brim with talented central defenders, but the opportunity to sign Maguire is something it appears the club are not going to pass up on, as they look to cement their central defensive pairing for the immediate future and beyond.

Jose Mourinho will want his man though, and it will not bother the former Chelsea boss if he does need to wield the axe and get rid of some of his current squad, and we here at the Transfer Tavern think that Argentinian defender Marcos Rojo could be at serious risk of being moved on.

The £16.2m-rated defender was a key member of the squad last season at Old Trafford, but he has never quite lived up to what many thought he would bring to the team during his time with United, and a move away from the club would not be the biggest shock in football.

Rojo has the ability to play both central defence and left back, which might well be his saving grace, but with Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, and Chris Smalling all still at Old Trafford, something will have to give, and Rojo might well be the one to bite the bullet.

Crucially, there would be plenty of interest in Rojo due to his reputation on the continent and in South America, making the defender a saleable asset to United and someone they can recoup some of the potential Maguire outlay on.

United fans, what do you think? Is Rojo the one who should leave? Let us know in the comments!

West Ham fans love links to Nakamba

Loads of West Ham fans have been reacting to the latest transfer news, as the Hammers are interested in Club Brugge midfielder Marvelous Nakamba.

Apart from having just about the best name in football, Nakamba is extremely highly rated throughout Europe, and it looks like West Ham could take the plunge to win the race for his signature.

According to West Ham World, the Hammers are “interested” in the 24 year-old as a possible replacement for Pedro Obiang.

Obiang has been linked with a switch back to Sampdoria, and although that move is starting to look less likely, more recent reports have claimed Premier League newcomers Fulham could swoop for the Spaniard.

Nakamba seems the perfect fit to replace him, likened to Liverpool’s Naby Keita due to his elusive dribbling style and ability to both defend and drive his team forward.

The young midfielder, valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, captains Zimbabwe, for whom he has nine caps.

He is a strong tackler and good passer, and while he may not immediately start in the Hammers’ midfield, he certainly has the traits to be a star in the future.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are loving both the links and his marvellous name…

Dele Alli can be the difference Mauricio Pochettino is looking for this season

After the most uneventful of transfer windows, Tottenham Hotspur brushed aside any question marks over their squad with a 2-1 win against Newcastle in their opening game of the season.

Goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli either side of a Joselu header secured the win for Mauricio Pochettino at St James’ Park.

Tottenham hadn’t been the happiest camp over the summer with Daniel Levy failing to make a single signing for the club – the first time this has happened to a Premier League club since the transfer window was introduced in 2003.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278420″ player=”12034″ title=”Pochettino Has Been Betrayed By Daniel Levy”]

One player who looked like a new signing for Spurs was goalscorer Dele Alli, who returned fresh after a World Cup in which he struggled to make a big impact for England.

Alli was the subject of criticism last year after failing to live up to the heights he had set in his first season at the club, registering nine goals and ten assists as opposed to the 18 and seven he notched up in the previous campaign.

However, the young talent looked to have put those demons to bed with a commanding performance in which he, not Harry Kane, looked Tottenham’s biggest threat.

Aside from his delicate finish which gave Spurs the three points, Alli was heavily involved in the game, both in attack and defence.

He had one more shot on target while two more were blocked and the 61 touches he made before he was substituted in the 79th minute was more than Harry Kane managed during the whole 90 minutes.

He won one aerial battle and three tackles, and managed to draw two fouls from Rafa Benitez’s side.

It’s a promising sign that Alli looks back to his best after a limited pre-season following the World Cup and Spurs fans will be hoping he can live up to the massive promise he has shown so far in his short career.

If he can continue to dominate like he did against Newcastle, the lack of new faces at Tottenham will soon be forgotten.

Pedro Obiang set to stay at West Ham United, fans react

This summer has been a very busy one for West Ham United and new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean coach, who replaced David Moyes at the end of last season, has brought in eight new faces ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The defence, midfield and attacking areas have been strengthened, but it appeared for a while that the club were going to lose a first-team player.

Last month, Sky Sports reported that Pedro Obiang was in talks to return to Sampdoria, where he spent seven years before joining the Hammers in 2015.

Amid the speculation, fans wondered who the club would sign as a replacement, but it seems that they can stop deliberating.

According to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, the 26-year-old is going nowhere and will be part of the team for Pellegrini’s debut campaign.

The East London outfit have spent close to £100m on new arrivals, but it seems that this update has got some fans just as excited.

Campbell not included in Arsenal’s Premier League squad, fans discuss attacker’s future

Joel Campbell has become the forgotten man at Arsenal, despite being at the club for seven years.

The Costa Rica international has struggled to grab a regular spot in the first team ever since his switch to the Emirates from Saprissa in 2011.

Campbell has been farmed out on loan six times during his time at Arsenal, the most recent of which was a stint at Real Betis.

With Arsene Wenger’s tenure over, the arrival of new manager Unai Emery gave the attack-minded star an opportunity to prove his ability.

Unfortunately it seems that Campbell has failed to impress the Spaniard as he has not been included in the 25-man squad list submitted to the Premier League.

This means that the 26-year-old, who has scored just three goals in England’s top flight, could either leave permanently to an overseas club or join a Championship outfit on loan.

Via Reddit, some Arsenal fans have been discussing Campbell’s fate.

Gomez makes a case to stay as Van Dijk’s centre-back partner at Liverpool

When the transfer window closed, Liverpool fans would have been delighted with the club’s business.

However, some may have felt slightly nervous about the fact that the team’s centre-back partnership was not completely solid.

Towards the end of last season, Dejan Lovren played alongside Virgil van Dijk, but the Croatian international struggles with consistency.

Due to Joel Matip’s injury and the departure of Ragnar Klavan, Joe Gomez was installed in the centre of defence despite the fact that he played at right-back last season.

The young defender held his own in the 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season, but he particularly shone on Monday night when he was tested against Crystal Palace.

Van Dijk was a pillar of strength throughout the 90 minutes, but Gomez was outstanding and equally as comfortable dealing with Palace’s attacks.

He made four clearances in total, and only his centre-back partner forced away the danger more times than the England international.

Gomez also showed strength and power in well-timed tackles and interceptions.

The 21-year-old played out from the back with ease and gave Klopp plenty to think about with regards to his defensive options.

It is only early days in the season, but Gomez showed against Palace that he is worthy of playing more centrally as opposed to in a full-back position.

Liverpool fans react to Mignolet’s transfer comments

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has criticised the club’s transfer policy by branding the decision to allow Loris Karius to leave on loan, whilst he remains at Anfield, as being “bizarre”, as reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.

The Liverpool Echo have provided a translation of the Belgian shot-stopper’s comments.

Having played a back up role to Karius for much of last season, Mignolet claims that he finds the decision to allow the preferred German to leave, whilst he himself also had offers to depart but was made to stay, as being “bizarre” and “strange”.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280645″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Dodgy De Gea & Arsenal’s MiniRevolution”]

With Danny Ward and Karius both having left the club, it now appears that Mignolet must remain as the second-choice ‘keeper behind new arrival Alisson Becker.

It is understandable why the 30-year-old also wanted to move on this summer. At this stage in his career, Mignolet must be desperate to secure regular football this season. Barring injury to Alisson, Mignolet stands basically no chance of becoming Jurgen Klopp’s No. 1 in this campaign.

Since joining the club in 2013, Mignolet spent several seasons as the Reds’ first choice, but consistent mistakes eventually forced the club to upgrade between the sticks, rendering Mignolet as something of a flop signing.

Now, his comments are sure to rile certain figures at the club and do raise questions over his professionalism.

Many Liverpool fans have since taken to Twitter to give their take on Mignolet’s comments…

Leeds United fans react to Pablo Hernandez recognition

Leeds United winger Pablo Hernandez has been awarded the PFA Fans’ Player of the Moth Award for August.

The 33-year-old former Spanish international was up against the likes of Bristol City forward Andreas Weimann, Middlesbrough shot-stopper Darren Randolph and Leeds United teammate Kemar Roofe.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”289180″ player=”12034″ title=”A Futsal Player Walks Into A Denmark Squad…”]

Having found the net three times and contributing two assists in a star-studded Lilywhites side, it is no surprise that Hernandez was voted Player of the Month.

Marcelo Bielsa, who took charge of Leeds in June this year, has turned Leeds United into a free-flowing, high-scoring, entertaining football team, and has guided his new-look side to the top of the Championship table.

Picking up 14 points from their opening six league fixtures, and with Pablo Hernandez leading by example thus far, it comes as no surprise to see the Leeds United faithful have taken to Twitter to express their gratitude towards the decision, with many tipping him to pick up further awards throughout the campaign.
