He’d revive Price: West Brom could hire “insanely talented” Mason upgrade

Ryan Mason now has only two wins from his last ten games in charge of West Bromwich Albion, as the pressure on his shoulders at the Hawthorns only gets heavier by the match.

Indeed, after falling to a 3-2 defeat to Tonda Eckert’s red-hot Southampton in the Championship in mid-week, the Baggies – who had promotion aspirations coming into the long second-tier season – now sit in an unsatisfactory 16th spot in the competitive division, six points shy of the coveted playoff positions.

Will Mason ultimately have to pay the price with his employment? Only time will tell.

An obvious source of frustration for the under-fire boss will be the continued no-show performances from Isaac Price, who was once one of the former Tottenham Hotspur coach’s first names on the teamsheet, only to now find himself slipping out of his manager’s first team plans on occasion.

Price's drop off at West Brom

Price started the brand new Championship season like a runaway train, with three goals and one assist coming his way from just his opening three clashes.

Of course, there would have to be a slight decline, as it’s unreasonable to expect the Northern Ireland international to be consistently hitting these ridiculous heights over a full campaign.

But, he has been extremely poor, all the same, in recent weeks as West Brom’s form has fallen off a cliff, leading to Mason only handing the ex-Everton youngster 26 minutes of action against Queens Park Rangers at the start of the month.

From the start against the Saints, he wasn’t any better, either, with just one of his six efforts at St. Mary’s being hit on target, alongside the lacklustre 22-year-old only winning two of his seven duels, as his previous tag of being an energetic livewire was nowhere to be found.

With his last goal for the club coming all the way back in October, amid a barren patch of form that can be seen looking at the table above, it could well fall to a new manager to get the very best out of Price.

Indeed, if Mason is brutally given the axe, there is one rumoured manager target who could be the fresh head coach the Northern Ireland international needs to reignite his failing season.

The Mason upgrade who can revive Price

As is the cruel nature of the beast, whenever a manager is going through a torrid run of form, rumours will circulate in the air that he is soon going to be on the chopping block.

That has begun for Mason, with suggestions that former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick could soon fill the vacancy if it opens up.

After all, Carrick did manage to guide Boro to one playoff finish during his three seasons at the Riverside helm, which is where West Brom are aspiring to be, leading to 56 league wins being notched up in total by the ex-Manchester United legend on Teesside.

He did eventually get the sack, but he still holds a prestigious reputation in the beautiful game among his peers, having been noted as a figure that “oozes class” by Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley, whom he played alongside at Old Trafford.

Most importantly for West Brom’s specific predicament, too, he managed to have a positive impact on a litany of attacking midfielders at the Riverside, with Finn Azaz – who operates from the number ten spot much like Price, but can also fill in down the left – amassing a ridiculous 16 goals and 16 assists from 66 games under Carrick.

Carrick even worked alongside Morgan Rogers at Boro before his Aston Villa explosion, with seven goals and nine assists coming his way under the out-of-work boss, before maturing into a Premier League-calibre star.

If Carrick were to be handed the reins after Mason, Price would be praying that he could be transformed into another revelation, having shown glimpses here and there of what he can do.

Price and co would surely relish the opportunity to work with a figure like Carrick, and not just because of his playing career, having been hailed as an “insanely talented coach” by former Boro player Lukas Engel.

Before anyone gets too carried away, however, Mason does a bumper set of Christmas fixtures ahead to save his skin. Still, the final nail in the coffin would surely come if more and more losses were tallied up.

"Elite" England star now Ruben Amorim's number one target at Man Utd

An “elite” midfielder has now risen to the top of Ruben Amorim’s shortlist, with Manchester United very keen to strengthen in the engine room.

Man Utd eyeing new midfielder amid Mainoo's lack of minutes

Kobbie Mainoo has played just 171 minutes across nine Premier League matches this season, most recently being brought on in stoppage time to help Man United close out a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace.

Falling down the pecking order is far from ideal for the Englishman, who will have ambitions of going to the World Cup next summer, having played a vital role in the Three Lions reaching the final of Euro 2024.

The Devils’ Advocate co-host Joe McGrath has now claimed United should sanction a loan move this winter, saying: “We had a player worth – and is still worth – £80m or £90m. A young England international. He’s so good. We can’t let his standards drop and we need to let him go on loan.

Should that happen, the Red Devils will need to bring in a replacement, and Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson has now emerged as Amorim’s top target, with a report from TEAMtalk revealing the 23-year-old is their ‘clear favourite’.

There are a number of other options on the shortlist namely Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Conor Gallagher and Morten Hjulmand, with United clearly determined to bring in a midfielder.

Signing Anderson is now Amorim’s priority, however, even though it could take a huge bid to get a deal over the line, with the Tricky Trees planning to hold out for around £100m.

"Elite" Anderson would be statement signing for Man Utd

A number of top Premier League clubs are now queuing up to sign the England international, including Manchester City and Liverpool, so Man United would be making a real statement if they were able to win the race for his signature.

Man Utd copying Chelsea model as INEOS line up double new signing

ByBen Goodwin Dec 2, 2025

It is no surprise so many teams are eager to sign the Forest star, given the impression he’s made for both club and country, with Thomas Tuchel recently lauding the central midfielder as “elite”.

The former Newcastle United man has also been in top form in the Premier League, completing a total of 736 short passes, the fifth-highest number of any player.

It is the correct decision to pinpoint Anderson as the top target, but United’s ability to compete for his signature will likely depend on whether they qualify for Europe, amid rival interest from some top clubs.

Bat Specialist Thinks Torpedo Bats Are Just Start of Bat Science Changes

Torpedo bats are just the beginning when it comes to the changes we'll see coming to bats in Major League Baseball.

Keenan Long of LongBall Labs joined on Thursday to discuss the new bats and what is next in the search for technology impacting offense in MLB. He first addressed one big fallacy related to bats, then went on to explain a number of issues related to torpedo bats and what the future looks like.

Ron Darling asked if there was a future where hitters change bats depending on the pitcher, and Long quickly affirmed that.

"Yes, absolutely, Jed Lowrie was one of our first clients and was doing that during his playing days," Long said. "He had a lineup of bats he was going to use for the pitchers he was going to face… So that's happening. It's happening right now."

The torpedo shape may not be the last adjustment we see to bat technology. Things are changing rapidly.

Better than O'Neil: Wolves looking to hire "insanely talented" English boss

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently looking for their next head coach after Vitor Pereira was removed from his post after no wins from the first ten matches of the Premier League season.

John Percy reports that Gary O’Neil, sacked by the club in the 2024/25 campaign, is now in advanced talks to take the job for a second time.

The English tactician was sacked by Wolves after losing 11 of the opening 16 games of last season, but may now be brought in to save the Old Gold from their current position.

Instead of going back to O’Neil, who had the team in relegation form before he left last term, the club should look to another manager on their shortlist.

Wolves identify former Championship manager as target

The former Bournemouth boss is not the only head coach who has been linked with a move to Molineux since Pereira was moved on from his position.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

According to The Athletic, O’Neil is one of three managers in the frame to land the permanent job, alongside Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards and Michael Carrick.

The report claims that all three of them are under consideration, as part of the club’s shortlist, but it did add that they would have to pay compensation to land Edwards.

Carrick is, therefore, the most interesting option on the list as an alternative to O’Neil, because he could be a dream option for Wolves for several reasons.

Why Wolves should appoint Carrick

The English boss, who was hailed as an “insanely talented coach” by former Boro player Lukas Engel, has stepped in to turn a poor start to a season around before.

He arrived at Boro in October 2022 after they won two of their first 11 Championship matches and led them to a fourth-place finish with 18 wins in 30 games, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he can inspire a group to turn their form around.

That suggests that he has a chance of being the source of inspiration that Wolves need to have any chance of avoiding relegation, with the team currently rock bottom of the division.

On top of that, Carrick, who was coy when asked about the Wolves vacancy on Match of the Day, is a proven Championship manager who can coach his side to play exciting football.

As much as supporters will not want to hear it at this stage of the season, it is worth thinking about how the next managerial appointment will fare if they take the team down, given the situation that they are going to inherit.

As you can see in the table above, Carrick’s coaching essentially delivered successive play-off level performances in the Championship, on top of actually finishing in the play-offs in his first season, but it was not rewarded by the output from his players.

The xGD numbers show that his Boro team consistently created more high-quality chances than the opposition, which tends to be a sign of a well-coached side.

Whereas, as shown in the post above from when he was linked to Norwich, O’Neil’s Bournemouth and Wolves teams, albeit at Premier League level, consistently conceded more chances than they created.

Therefore, Carrick, who is currently a free agent, would be a dream alternative to O’Neil because of the short and long-term impact that he could have.

Salahuddin: 'I have no ego; if someone better comes along, it's for the team'

Bangladesh have had plenty of troubles on and off the field in 2025. They have suffered series defeats against UAE, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. They have also lost the Test and ODI series in Sri Lanka with one match left on the tour. Ahead of the third T20I on Wednesday, frustration within the Bangladesh dressing room spilt out.Assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin reacted strongly at the pre-match press conference when it was suggested that the BCB is looking for a new batting coach. Salahuddin was appointed last November primarily as the team’s batting coach, but the batting unit has not completely clicked over the last nine months, with some holding Salahuddin responsible.Related

“My role as a coach in the Bangladesh team isn’t set in stone,” Salahuddin said. “I have never had any ego about it. If someone better comes (in the role of a batting coach), it will be for the team. The Bangladesh team is not the property of my father and grandfather. I will get criticised when I don’t do well, I will get praised when I do well. It is the reality. Whether I give 100% for my team, whether I am honest or not, is the main concern.”Salahuddin’s main gripe was with recent media reports that he has heavily influenced team decisions including selection and player roles. Given his stellar record in domestic cricket for the last two decades, he has also developed long-standing working relations with many cricketers, including those in the current Bangladesh squad.”After coaching for 27-28 years, I am hearing that there are lots of complaints in the team against me. I really would like to know about those complaints. Best if it was given to me in writing. You have to provide hard evidence. It will help me correct myself.”If I feel that the team needs a change for the good of the team, I will most likely do that. Our team has been losing regularly, so how will I benefit from favouritism?”It is not the first time during this Sri Lanka tour that discord within the Bangladesh team has come out in public. Last month, Najmul Hossain Shanto resigned from the Test captaincy, stating that the dressing room had too many captains. Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz are the T20I and ODI captains, respectively.

Vivell's a fan: Man Utd devise plan to sign "elite" £40m midfielder with Wharton

Manchester United have now devised a masterplan to sign an “elite” midfielder, with director of recruitment Christopher Vivell “definitely” a fan, it has been revealed.

Man Utd looking to bolster options in the engine room

After missing out on a new central midfielder in the summer, it is becoming increasingly evident that Man United will look to strengthen their options in the middle of the park this January, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton recently being named among the targets.

However, Palace owner Steve Parish has recently revealed he has no intention of selling Wharton to the Red Devils, and with the 21-year-old contracted until the summer of 2029, the Eagles remain in a strong negotiating position.

It has previously been suggested the South Londoners could look to hold out for £100m for the England international, meaning Ruben Amorim’s side may need to fork out a club-record fee to get a deal over the line.

As such, given Man United’s well-documented financial issues, it could make sense to switch their focus to more affordable targets, and they have now devised a masterplan to sign Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states United are now considering a move for Bouaddi, who has started to make a name for himself in France, and transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that Vivell is personally keen.

Jones said: “I think he is a very interesting player to keep an eye on. He played a full 90 minutes in midfield recently against PSG and plenty of scouts were at the game watching him.

“Man Utd and Christopher Vivell [in charge of identifying new, upcoming talent] definitely like him.”

It has previously been suggested that Lille are looking to receive £40m for the 18-year-old, which would be affordable, albeit a huge fee to pay for such a young player.

Massive Potter upgrade: "Outstanding" coach in final three for West Ham job

It would be an understatement to say that West Ham United have not had the start to the season they’d have been hoping for.

For example, the East Londoners aren’t taking part in the League Cup this week after losing to the equally terrible Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.

It’s somehow been even worse in the Premier League, with the Irons losing to Sunderland, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in their first five games.

In short, things need to change, and it now looks like the club are going after a manager who’d be a massive upgrade on Graham Potter.

West Ham target Potter upgrade

The last few weeks have seen West Ham be linked with a host of potential Potter replacements, with one of the more prominent ones being Slaven Bilic.

Manager Focus

The former Hammers boss left the club in 2017, and has since managed Al-Ittihad, West Bromwich Albion, Beijing Guoan, Watford and Al-Fateh.

In other words, he’s not done much to suggest he’d bring in a new era at the club.

Likewise, while he’s doing a reasonable enough job with Coventry City, the links to Frank Lampard aren’t going to excite fans.

Fortunately, there is another coach on the club’s radar, someone who’d be a massive upgrade on Potter.

At least that’s according to a recent report from Claret and Hugh, which claims West Ham are very interested in Nuno Espírito Santo.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Portuguese manager is now one of three names on a shortlist for the role.

It remains unclear whether West Ham will be able to secure their man, but they should certainly keep trying, as he’d be a colossal upgrade on Potter.

How Nuno compares to Potter

The good news is that there are several reasons why we think Nuno would be a significant upgrade on Potter.

The most important of all, and the one that encompasses many of the others, is his track record.

More specifically, his track record in English football and the Premier League.

For example, although he had a fairly dire stint in charge of Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese coach has more than proven himself capable of managing at the top level with both Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

He took over the former when they were still in the Championship, led them to promotion in his first campaign and then, within a few years, had them playing Europa League football.

Likewise, when he took over at Forest, it was viewed as something of an impossible job, but he led them from relegation candidates to European football in a season and a half.

On the other hand, while Potter did a pretty good job with Brighton & Hove Albion, he proceeded to fail with Chelsea, and it would be hard to find someone who’d claim he isn’t failing at the London Stadium today.

Finally, you only need to compare their records in the top-flight to see who is the better manager.

The “outstanding” Portuguese coach, as dubbed by commentator Adam Summerton, has taken charge of 184 games in the Premier League, of which his teams have won 72, lost 67, drawn 45 and averaged 1.42 points per game.

In contrast, the Englishman has taken charge of 164 games in the competition, of which 47 have been wins, 55 draws, and 62 losses, which comes out to a points per game average of just 1.20.

Ultimately, West Ham need a new manager, and Nuno looks like the best man for the job.

West Ham were "close" to signing Paqueta upgrade, now he's worth more than Isak

The biggest story of the transfer window was undoubtedly Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, but West Ham United had their own saga going on.

For a moment in time, it looked like Lucas Paqueta might have been leaving the club, with Aston Villa reportedly keen to sign him.

However, to the delight of the fans, the Brazilian maestro made it abundantly clear in his celebration against Nottingham Forest that he had no intention of leaving.

The former Lyon ace has been a brilliant player for the Hammers, although they did once come close to signing an upgrade who is now worth more than Isak.

Paqueta's West Ham career

It would be fair to say that since joining the club for around £51m in the summer of 2022, Paqueta hasn’t always had the easiest time of it at West Ham.

However, when you discount the off-pitch issues, it’s impossible to deny that he’s been more than worth the investment the Hammers initially made in him.

For example, despite playing under several different managers and in various systems, the 28-year-old has amassed an impressive tally of 21 goals and 14 assists in 124 games.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 3.54 games, and, crucially, he produced five goal involvements in the club’s historic Conference League winning campaign.

In all, Paqueta remains one of the most talented players in West Ham’s squad, and someone who could make all the difference for them in what could still be a tough season.

Lucas Paqueta in action for West Ham.

Yet, things could have been very different, as just a couple of years ago, the club came close to signing someone who would have been a significant upgrade, someone now worth more than Isak.

The Paqueta upgrade West Ham almost signed

All clubs have their own list of star players they’ve missed out on over the years, and West Ham is obviously no different.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast’s One That Got Away series.

However, there are some players who are worse to miss out on than others, and that is certainly the case for Cole Palmer.

Yes, according to David Moyes, the Hammers were very “close” to getting the former Manchester City gem before his move to Chelsea, but the deal broke down, in part because Paqueta’s potential move to City fell apart.

It would have been an utterly sensational signing for the East Londoners, for good as the Brazilian is, the Englishman would be an upgrade.

For example, since moving to Stamford Bridge, the “world-class” superstar, as dubbed by Pat Nevin, has scored 43 goals and provided 29 assists in 98 appearances, totalling 7950 minutes.

That means he’s averaged a goal involvement every 1.36 games, or every 110.41 minutes, with the West Londoners, which is an outrageous rate of return.

Unsurprisingly, his out-of-this-world ability has seen his valuation skyrocket over the last couple of years, and according to the CIES Football Observatory, he is now worth up to 164m, which is about £142m, or £18m more than Liverpool paid for Isak.

Ultimately, there is no point crying over spilt milk, but we can’t help but think West Ham would be in a better position today had they secured a deal for Palmer two years ago.

Ratcliffe ready to back Amorim: £35m star now high on Man Utd's shortlist

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to back Ruben Amorim in the January transfer window, with an “amazing” player now high on Manchester United’s shortlist.

Man Utd have big decision to make with Amorim at "breaking point"

Man United signed off with an unconvincing 3-2 victory against Burnley before the international break, which didn’t exactly silence the critics, and club legend Wayne Rooney believes the manager will be feeling the pressure.

Speaking after the EFL Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town, Rooney said: “Manchester United is so different to where he’s been before. You come in and there’s the media team, the commercial team, the fans and the media.

“There’s a pressure with United, which he will never have felt before. When you’re not winning games, that can start to get [to you] and it looked like he was at a breaking point.”

£1m+ Arsenal target has heart set on Man Utd move due to Sir Alex Ferguson

The Red Devils would be well-positioned to win the race for a forward.

ByDominic Lund Sep 10, 2025

As such, INEOS have a big decision to make on Amorim’s future, given that the Portuguese manager’s record since arriving last November has been far from impressive, averaging just 1.37 points per match across 46 games.

However, a new report from TEAMtalk states that Ratcliffe and co are ready to back their manager in the January transfer window, suggesting the Man United ownership still believe in Amorim’s project.

The 40-year-old is set to be provided with the funds to strengthen his squad this winter, and a new central midfielder is believed to be of particular interest, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson featuring high up the shortlist.

After joining Forest from Newcastle United for £35m last summer, Anderson has enjoyed an impressive rise, recently receiving his first call-up for England, and it would be fair to say the midfielder grasped the opportunity with both hands, impressing journalist Craig Hope.

"Amazing" Anderson impressing for club and country

Not only has the England international caught the eye for the Three Lions, but he has also received plaudits for his performances at club level, being described as “amazing” by former manager Nuno last season.

The 22-year-old is an incredibly well-rounded midfielder, as showcased by the fact he provides an attacking threat, picking up eight Premier League goal contributions last season, while his tackling ability is also impressive.

It is little wonder that Anderson is high on Man United’s shortlist, and he should remain a key target, regardless of whether Amorim lasts until the January transfer window.
