Top picks from Nike, adidas, Umbro and more

If your new year's resolution has been to pick up a ball and get playing, or if you’re just looking to update your worn-out footwear, there’s no time like the present to purchase a new pair of football boots.

However, with the mid-season months come surfaces that can change quickly, and it pays to be able to conquer all terrain with a pair of multi-ground boots that can help you weather the elements.

We’ve rounded up the best multi-ground boots you can get on the market today, depending on what you want out of your game – alongside answering the most commonly asked questions by players looking to get the most out of their purchase.

What are multi-ground (MG) boots?

Multi-ground boots, commonly referred to by the shortened phrase MG, are footwear specifically designed to provide the strongest experience for players over both firm and soft turf surfaces.

Surprisingly rare compared to other boots found on the market, they tend to be constructed with a combination of factors found in both firm ground and soft ground footwear, trading off the qualities of each other to deliver a shoe that brokers no compromise.

In spite of their ability to adapt to multiple surfaces, multi-ground boots are not as commonly favoured as hard ground boots across the rest of the professional game, though they do have their place in the top leagues across the world.

What surfaces can MG boots be used on?

Specifically, multi-ground boots can be used on almost any conventional surface, designed to offer traction and control on the more sturdy firm ground surfaces as well as offering stability and comfort on soft ground surfaces.

They will offer strong options for both, but their ability to tackle various pitches does not make them wholly encompassing – they will not function on indoor courts, for example, thanks to their studded configuration.

What is the difference between multi-ground boots and others?

There are several differences – some large, some subtle – between multi-ground boots and boots designed for individual surfaces. Firm ground boots, for example, tend to bring blade-like configurations on their soles to pierce harder grass, while astro turf boots tend to have more rubber to aid in bouncy performances.

With that in mind, here are the best MG football boots that you can get right now:

Worcs seek some magic after Fell ton

ScorecardMoeen Ali may yet get his chance to make an impact with the ball (file photo)•Getty Images

It is no great surprise that the Middlesex players are not fond of playing at Uxbridge. They have not won a Championship match here since 1991. And, with a day left to play, it looks like a winless run that will continue for another year. The outfield is scorched and undulating, while the pitch asks much of the pacemen and even more of the spinners. That being said, Uxbridge is one of the better outgrounds on offer. Some say Middlesex will struggle to win the Championship if they continue to play here. There may be some truth in that, but it is fair to say they will struggle to win it playing at Lord’s, too. Championship-winning teams do not tend to get turfed out of their home ground for students.A penny for Sam Robson’s thoughts as he walked off, two balls into his second innings, with a pair to his name. He has faced three balls in the match, all from Charlie Morris, all pearlers. Another, too, for Moeen Ali’s: brought on first-change in an innings that started with Worcestershire boasting a 76-run first-digs lead. After three overs for not many and no wickets, he only made a return to bowl the last two overs of the day.

Worcestershire’s Tom Fell

On his fourth first-class hundred
“It was definitely one of the tougher ones. They came pretty hard at me and bowled a lot of short-stuff, which is never easy. Given the circumstances, it’s one of the better ones.”
On dealing with the short stuff
“I know I looked a bit uncomfortable playing it but it’s a shot I do like to play. When I realised they were going to keep going for it I knew it would be a great way to score. Obviously it got me in the end and they were pretty happy about it.”
On the position in the game
We’re not too far ahead. We would have liked one or two more tonight but we’re in a solid position. There’s a hint of turn, a little bit. The pitch is wearing and there’s a bit of up and down movement. Hopefully if it does start turning, Ajmal and Ali will win the game for us.”

By that time, Saeed Ajmal had bowled 13 overs; though, to be fair to Ajmal, he also produced one of the balls of the game. Just as Nick Gubbins was looking assured on 23, the Pakistan offspinner, operating around the wicket to the left-hander, pitched one on middle and off, dragging Gubbins forward, before it turned past the outside edge and took the top of off. It was not long before he left the changing room to make his way to the radio tent where the team analyst showed him video footage of his dismissal. It was a peach. When the day drew to a close, things were not as precarious as they could have been. Nick Compton had looked in good touch, hitting his first ball for six (Okay, it was a two into the leg side which led to four over-throws) before hitting some more deliberate and stylish fours; he drove Leach with ease and showed just how good a shot-maker he is with a drive off a decent length ball from Morris, which he jumped back to thread through cover. But when he went to Jack Shantry, Middlesex were still three behind and, now, three down. But Joe Burns and Paul Stirling remained calm, pushed on and defended well. There was slight cause for concern when Burns edged Leach but no chance came from it, as it died in front of Alex Gidman at first slip. Stirling gave a taster of what might come with a couple of superbly timed drives and then, in the final over, a hard pull that nearly put a hole in one of the advertising boards. His unbeaten 39 was the beginnings of a first-class innings of the sort of worth that Middlesex fans have craved from him for a long time.Having judged the first five balls of the day well, Alex Gidman allowed the last of Tim Murtagh’s over to crash flush into his off stump. That would be the first of four wickets for Murtagh, on a morning and afternoon of frustration for Middlesex. As the track dulled, Tom Fell continued to a second Championship hundred of the season by hitting his 16th four off his 174thball. On his way to 143, the highest first-class score of his career to date, he freed his arms, aware that Worcestershire’s tail is not really one that needs shepherding. Even Ajmal, batting at No. 10, hit four boundaries in an innings of 20.Fell was involved in a thrilling stand-off with Toby Roland-Jones – though he admitted at stumps he didn’t enjoy it that much – that would eventually see him caught in the deep off what looked and sounded like a well-struck hook.On 132, he swiped at a short-ball from Roland-Jones that stung the tips of John Simpson’s fingers behind the stumps. Roland-Jones let out a scream and returned to his mark. When the pair met the next over, another was dug in short and Fell crashed it for six – the first of the innings – right over square leg. Roland-Jones said a bit, Fell remained still. Soon Fell was walking off and Roland-Jones said a bit more.At that point, Worcestershire were 332 for 8 in the 108th over. That they ended up on 385 owes much to Shantry, who hit back-to-back sixes off Roland-Jones before displaying a touch of ingenuity to dab Ollie Rayner fine on the leg-side and take his side past 350 for a third bowling point. He was left unbeaten on 41 when Murtagh floored four stumps in dismissing Ajmal and Morris in the space of three balls. That gave Murtagh his best figures of the season so far.As for Moeen, the last time Worcestershire won an away game in Division One (against Lancashire in 2012), he took 6 for 29. Anything remotely similar would give his side a chance to win another.

Whirlwind Willey puts Northants in sight

David Willey transformed an otherwise well-matched contest to leave Northamptonshire in sight of their first first-class victory since 2013

First with the ball, and now with the bat. For the second day in a row at Wantage Road, a staggering burst of acceleration from David Willey transformed an otherwise well-matched contest to leave Northamptonshire in sight of their first first-class victory since their in 2013.Willey’s three wickets in four balls to dock Gloucestershire’s tail on Monday afternoon were matched for dramatic effect by a brutal 79-ball century. At the age of 25, it was the first first-class hundred of a career that has been plagued by injury for the past 18 months, and it laid waste to a diligent day’s work from a Gloucestershire attack that, while never quite dominating, had held their opponents in check for the first session and a half.As well as seven fours, Willey cracked six sixes in his onslaught, four of which came in the space of eight balls after tea, as he turned up the heat against a demoralised Gloucestershire, whose fielders wilted in the bright spring sunshine.A rash of fielding errors were compounded in the late-innings frenzy when Rory Kleinveldt, who made 48 from 52 balls, was dropped twice in as many overs by Will Tavare in the deep. Willey needed no such lives, however, and had hurtled to 104 not out from 83 balls when the declaration came from Alex Wakely. It might be an affront to suggest to Willey that the gulf between first- and second-division cricket is widening by the year, but then again, as the son of one of the county’s most hard-bitten campaigners, he’s nobody’s fool either. The team that failed to win a match all last season and lost by an innings on eight occasions, has played with a combination of flair and resolve that they were unable to produce in the top flight last summer. Today’s outing is surely a harbinger of better times ahead. With that in mind, the day’s unsung heroes were the sixth-wicket pair of Josh Cobb and Rob Keogh, who added 101 to shore up an innings that was in distinct jeopardy in the day’s early exchanges. After resuming on 68 for 2 overnight, Northants lost Rob Newton to a loose cut to point for 19 before Wakely attempted to work Liam Norwell off his pads and lobbed a simple return catch to the bowler.Adam Rossington then flashed at Norwood before he was set and top-edged a miscued pull to point for 4. At 110 for 5, a major renovation was required by the home team. Cobb, his allegiances newly transferred from Leicestershire, dug in while Keogh made the early running, but having waited 64 balls for his first boundary, he celebrated in style with four more in a row off the toiling James Fuller, whose 19 overs were dispatched for 114 runs.Cobb was the first to reach his fifty, from exactly 100 balls, before attempting to up the ante against Kieran Noema-Barnett and holing out to mid-on for 58. And Keogh was denied what would have been a hugely deserved hundred when, on 81, he was trapped lbw by the left-arm spin of Dent.By that stage, however, Willey was firmly in the zone and all Gloucestershire’s players could do was sit tight and wait for the inevitable. The declaration duly came with a tricky 15-over spell to negotiate, which Dent and Tavare managed with few alarms. By the close they had reached 35 for 0, still trailing by a hefty 419.

McCullum named NZ sportsman of the year

Brendon McCullum has been named the New Zealand sportsman of the year, becoming the first cricketer to win the title since Martin Crowe in 1991

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2015Brendon McCullum has been named the New Zealand sportsman of the year, the first cricketer to win the title since Martin Crowe in 1991.New Zealand enjoyed unprecedented success under McCullum in 2014, winning five Tests from nine matches, a national record. It included series victories against India and West Indies, as well as a drawn series against Pakistan in UAE. In ODIs, the team crushed India 4-0 in January 2014, and secured a hard-fought 3-2 win against Pakistan under spin-heavy conditions in UAE in December.Individually, McCullum scored 1164 Test runs – the most by a New Zealand batsman in a calendar year – at 72.75 and finished as the fourth-highest run scorer in 2014, despite playing the fewest innings among the top 10 batsmen in the list.McCullum’s stellar year began at Eden Park, where his 224 set New Zealand up for a 40-run win against India. In the second Test at the Basin Reserve, New Zealand were struggling at 94 for 5 in the second innings, still trailing by 152 runs, when McCullum scripted a stunning turnaround. He put up a 352-run partnership with BJ Watling, and eventually became the first New Zealand player to score a triple-hundred, helping his team to a draw and a series win.McCullum had a quiet tour of West Indies, scoring just 87 runs from three Tests, but New Zealand clinched the series 2-1, their first series win away from home against a top-eight nation in 12 years. In UAE, New Zealand surrendered the first Test against Pakistan by 248 runs, but in the third Test in Sharjah, McCullum blasted a 188-ball 202, ensuring the visitors leveled the series with an innings and 80-run win. He capped off a fine year by scoring 195 against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, where he also knocked off the record for the fastest hundred by a New Zealand player in Tests, off 74 balls. The innings also ensured that McCullum become the first ever New Zealand batsman to amass 1000 Test runs in a calendar year.

Pakistan tumble towards big defeat

Rangana Herath drove away any thoughts of a Sharjah-like chase by breaking the back of Pakistan batting – Azhar Ali, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan – within his first six overs

The Report by Devashish Fuloria17-Aug-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRuns, catches and a looming Test win.. Mahela Jayawardene was set for a perfect farewell•AFPIt is hard to imagine what Pakistan would have felt in the morning when Saeed Ajmal got one to kick up from length on Kumar Sangakkara and had him caught at short leg. There would have been the elation of seeing the back of one of the world’s most prized wickets, out for just five runs on the day, after a threatening 107-stand. There would have been a resurgence in belief that Pakistan could, somehow, sneak up on Sri Lanka, cause an upset to square the series and disrupt Mahela Jayawardene’s farewell party plans. Somewhere, there would have been a worry too. About Rangana Herath, who had run through their batting order to pick up nine wickets in the first innings on a flat pitch. The approach of the Pakistan openers as they set out to chase 271 suggested they wanted to take whatever they could get off the seamers, before the inevitable arrived. Ahmed Shehzad and Khurram Manzoor possibly underestimated the quicks and did not hold their strokes back, sometimes playing and missing. Both were dismissed by Dhammika Prasad before Herath came in to bowl. And his first ball turned and bounced almost chest high for the wicketkeeper, leaving no doubt that the batsmen had little chance. As expected, Herath drove away any thoughts of a Sharjah-like chase by breaking the back of Pakistan batting – Azhar Ali, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan – within his first six overs.A lot depended on the three batsmen if Pakistan were to put up a fight. Azhar was the hero of the chase in Sharjah while Younis and Misbah have excellent records in fourth innings, both boasting of averages in excess of 50. But Azhar did not have a chance against one that turned away and took the outside to Jayawardene, neither did Misbah, who, too, was snapped up at first slip again, taking Jayawardene’s catch-tally to 205. Younis had seen the dismissals from the other end and the turn would have played on his mind, but he was done in by the arm-ball, trapped lbw as he missed a sweep.Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed have had success against spin during this tour and were nimble-footed during a 55-run sixth-wicket stand that prevented total capitulation. But Shafiq missed one as he stepped out to give Herath his 22nd wicket in the series. With effectively two wickets remaining – Junaid Khan was ruled out – Pakistan were left facing a big defeat.Run-scoring had been difficult all day and there were more animated reactions from the bowlers than scoring shots. Under grey skies, the three-man Pakistan attack worked tirelessly and found generous help from the SSC surface. Ajmal, who bowled unchanged through the day, dismissed Sangakkara in his second over of the day. He followed it up with Mahela Jayawardene’s wicket – the 10th time he dismissed the batsman in Tests – in his next over before beating Lahiru Thirimanne with a doosra to collect three wickets in a 46-over slog. Wahab Riaz also picked up three wickets with the old ball. There was no way past Angelo Mathews’ bat though. His unbeaten 43 included plenty of nudges and expansive shots hardly made an appearance – he hit just two boundaries. But his runs – and his partnerships with Niroshan Dickwella and Prasad – were critical in the context of the match as Sri Lanka lost last eight wickets for 96 runs to post 282.Thus, the role of the Jayawardene-Sangakkara stand had been extremely important. It was the 19th time the two had added more than 100 in Tests, making them the second-most prolific pair behind Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. The Sunday crowd that had settled in early for Jayawardene’s last Test innings rose to its feet in the second over of the day as the batsman swept Ajmal to the fine-leg boundary and reached his 50th Test half-century. It turned out to be the penultimate scoring stroke in Jayawardene’s 11814-run wide Test canvas as the batsman soon miscued a lofted shot to mid-on off Ajmal. He walked back acknowledging the applause from all, leaving the future of Sri Lanka’s batting, and of the current Test, with the new generation. That Sangakkara also waved his bat to the stands on his walk back to the pavilion raised speculation of it being his last Test appearance in Sri Lanka. As the two left in quick succession, batting suddenly turned into a difficult job.

'This is a shameful loss' – Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, has called his side’s 32-run loss to Afghanistan a “shameful defeat”. He has questioned the dedication of his players and said those not motivated enough will have to be replaced.”This is a shameful loss. For a split second I thought we wouldn’t lose this game, being honest with you. I thought that someone or the other would stand up and bail us out. But in the end we were not good enough.”We have to replace those players who, after being motivated, do not understand. It is not my or someone else’s team. It is a matter of the nation. I think it is time to replace those who cannot perform. If they don’t feel bad after losing to Afghanistan or Sri Lanka, they should not play cricket. After seeing some of their cricket, I think some of us can’t feel what is going on. The team management and selectors will probably think about changes.”There are several areas of concern but the fielding has been particularly poor since the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Even on Saturday, Imrul Kayes dropped two catches and there were far too many singles given away between the bowler and the extra-cover fielder. At times, Bangladesh’s body language didn’t suggest the urgency that was needed.Mushfiqur said that he is seeking answers from his team-mates. “If I knew what was wrong, I would have fixed it after a game. I don’t have any answers about fielding. Our fielding hasn’t been this consistently bad for so long.”I have to answer this question time and again. If the players don’t understand, it becomes tough. I cannot spoon-feed all eleven players. If they don’t show responsibility at this stage, it becomes very tough.”Mushfiqur’s tactics as the captain were also called into question during the post-match press conference. With the opposition 90 for 5 in the 27th over, there was a need to up the ante and attack a little more. But just like he didn’t attack after reducing Sri Lanka to 67 for 8 two weeks ago, he allowed Asghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari to craft a recovery. He said that Sohag Gazi’s finger injury early in the game handicapped him, forcing the use of part-timers like Nasir Hossain and Mominul Haque. “We were one bowler short so I had to make do with some part-timers. I think they batted really well at that stage. We dropped a couple of catches. But I still feel we should have chased down this target.”There was further bad news for Bangladesh as Gazi’s injury ruled him out of the rest of the Asia Cup. “The cut was caused by the seam and it had to be stitched up. He will need seven to ten days to recover,” said Bangladesh team physio Vibhav Singh said. Mahmudullah has been called up as his replacement.

Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan have the responsibility of firing the innings, Kumar Sangakkara and Jayawardene will steady the middle order, and the captain Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews will provide the end assault. Lasith Malinga will lead the bowling, with Thisira Perera, Nuwan Kulasekera and Sachitra Senanayake completing the attack.Mashrafe Mortaza has been given charge of Bangladesh’s T20 team in the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim and he will have to manage an environment made delicate by Tamim’s stepping down.Bangladesh’s counter will be led by openers Tamim Iqbal and Shamsur Rahman. If Tamim’s neck problem rules him out, Anamul Haque will have to fill that role. Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain will be in charge of the middle order, helping the likely debutant Sabbir Rahman, Bangladesh’s best domestic Twenty20 batsman. Shakib will also have to lead the bowling.Form guide (Completed matches, most recent first)Bangladesh LWLLL

Perera scored a first-class hundred two weeks ago, and made 84 in Sri Lanka’s last Twenty20.Shamsur Rahman is Bangladesh’s form batsman. He is an aggressive opener, always on the front foot and quick on the drive. Sri Lanka will be aware of the impact he can have.Team newsTamim has a slight neck strain while Shamsur was down with fever two days before the match. Both are expected to play though. Mithun Ali is expected to keep wicket in Mushfiqur Rahim’s replacement, though Anamul Haque is also an option. This is the same area where he injured himself while trying to grab a low chance in the slips in the first innings of the Dubai Test against Pakistan last month. Also, Lahiru Thirimanne’s injury means the No. 7 slot could go to Seekkuge Prasanna, or Angelo Perera.Sri Lanka (likely) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara, 5 Dinesh Chandimal (capt & wk), 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Seekuge Prasanna/Angelo Perera, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Sachitra Senanayake, 11 Lasith MalingaPitch and conditionsThe Chittagong surface will be flat once again. There will be little lateral movement, and the fast outfield could make for a high-scoring game.Stats and trivia The Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong will be hosting its first Twenty20 international. Bangladesh will not climb the T20 rankings even if they win 2-0. Sri Lanka will cede the No. 1 spot to India if they lose 2-0. Jayawardene will become the second Sri Lankan after Dilshan to play 50 Twenty20 internationals. Mortaza will be Bangladesh’s fifth Twenty20 captain. He has already led in seven ODIs and a Test match.Quotes”Every single game now is important for us before the World Cup. We have to get prepared with the conditions and weather.”
